    Afternoon, I can successful in my Geneious Pro software but when I am required to have FLEXnet installed for the licensing process. The prompt I am given is : To install FLEXnet on Linux, run the following command from your shell as root: /home/shep/Geneious/licensing_service/install_fnp.sh "/home/shep/Geneious/licensing_service/linux64/FNPLicensingService" When you have done this, you can activate your license in Geneious. As Root: root@Jon:/home/shep/Geneious/licensing_service# sh install_fnp.sh Unable to locate anchor service to install, please specify correctly on command line also root@Jon:/home/shep/Geneious/licensing_service/linux64# sh FNPLicensingService FNPLicensingService: 2: FNPLicensingService: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string Anyone have further ideas?   • Implementing a "state-machine" logic for methods required by an object in C++

    What I have: 1 hypothetical object/class + other classes and related methods that gives me functionality. What I want: linking this object to 0 to N methods in realtime on request when an event is triggered Each event is related to a single method or a class, so a single event does not necessarily mean "connect this 1 method only" but can also mean "connect all the methods from that class or a group of methods" Avoiding linked lists because I have to browse the entire list to know what methods are linked, because this does not ensure me that the linked methods are kept in a particular order (let's say an alphabetic order by their names or classes), and also because this involve a massive amount of pointers usage. Example: I have an object Employee Jon, Jon acquires knowledge and forgets things pretty easily, so his skills may vary during a period of time, I'm responsible for what Jon can add or remove from his CV, how can I implement this logic?

  • Nginx Fastcgi performance issues

    I am running several fastcgi servers behind Nginx. I run 3 Nginx workers and 6 fastcgi servers as upstream backends. When I run load tests of 1 req per sec, I can clearly see that on avarage a reply is 0.1sec, but from time to time there are 3.1 sec responses. It is a suspiciously deterministic number and it happens even at very small loads from time to time. Both CPU and Memory are of no issue at all. Any idea where this delay may be comming from? Any suggestions how to debug this? Many thanks, Barry.

    One really cool part of my job is selecting the articles for the Daily Community Spotlight, on the home page of the ASP.NET website. The spotlight highlights a new post about ASP.NET development every day from a member of the ASP.NET community. You can find it on the home page of the ASP.NET site, at http://asp.net These posts aren't automatically drawn from a pool of RSS feeds or anything - I pick a new post for each day of the year. How I pick the posts I have a few important selection criteria: Interesting to well rounded ASP.NET developers The ASP.NET website has a lot of material for all skill and experience levels, from download / get started to advanced. I try to select community spotlight posts to round that out with fresh and timely information that working ASP.NET developers can really use. Posts highlight solutions to common problems, clever projects and code that helps you leverage ASP.NET, and important announcements about things you can use today. As part of that, I try to mix between ASP.NET MVC, Web Forms, and Web Pages (a.k.a. WebMatrix). As a professional developer, I want to keep on top of all of my options for ASP.NET development, and the common platform base they all share generally means that good ASP.NET code is good ASP.NET code. Exposing new and non-Microsoft community members as much as possible The exercise of selecting good ASP.NET community posts every day of the year has made me think about what the community is. Given the choice, I'll always favor non-Microsoft employees, but since Microsoft often hires ASP.NET community members and MVP's (myself included), I really think that the ASP.NET community includes developers who are using and writing about ASP.NET, both inside and outside of Microsoft. I'm especially excited about the opportunity to highlight new and lesser known bloggers. Usually being featured on the ASP.NET Community Spotlight gives a pretty good traffic bump, and I love being able to both provide great content to the community and encourage lesser known community members by giving them some (much deserved) attention. Announcements only when they're useful to working developers - not marketing Some of the posts are announcements about new releases, such as Scott Hanselman's post on ASP.NET Universal Providers for Session, Memebership, and Roles. I include those when I think they're interesting and of immediate use to you on projects. I occasionally get asked to link to new content from a team at Microsoft; if it's useful and timely content I'll ask them to point me to a blog post by an actual person rather than a faceless team. How the posts are managed This feed used to be managed by an internal spreadsheet on a Sharepoint site, which was painful for a lot of reasons. I took a cue from Jon Udell, who uses of a public Delicious feed feed for his Elm City project, and we moved the management of these posts over to a Delicious feed as well. You can hear more about Jon's use of Delicious in Elm City in our Herding Code interview - still one of my favorite interviews. We ended up with a simpler scenario, but Note: I watched the Yahoo/Delicious news over the past year and was happy to see that Delicious was recently acquired by the founders of YouTube.   • Nginx multiple upstream servers on the same domain via diferent url

    Hello. I am trying to rout trafic to different upstream servers (that serve different applications and not for load balancing). The incoming trafic has the same domain name but different URL. Here is an example of my configuration: http { upstream backend1 { server 127.0.0.1:8080 fail_timeout=0; server 127.0.0.1:8081 fail_timeout=0; } upstream backend2 { server 127.0.0.1:8090 fail_timeout=0; server 127.0.0.1:8091 fail_timeout=0; } server { listen 80; server_name my_server.com; root /home/my_server; location /serve_me { fastcgi_pass backend1; include fastcgi_params; } location / { fastcgi_pass backend2; include fastcgi_params; } } } It seems that whatever trafic comes in (including "my_server.com/serve_me") goes to backend2.   • What extra packages are needed by Amarok to transcode to MP3?

    I'm using Amarok 2.6.0, on KDE version 4.9.3, on Kubuntu 12.04. I would like to be able to copy my music onto my MP3 player (in this case, my iPhone 3), but to transcode the tracks as I copy them over. However, when I right-click on the selected track, and choose "Copy to Collection" and select my iPhone, the option to transcode to MP3 is greyed out. What additional packages does Amarok need in order to enable the transcode to MP3 option? I am not entirely sure why I can't even boot off the live CD? Any ideas? Hi thanks for the quick response. All Distros were direct download from their respective websites, I have tried both CD boot with all distros and USB boot with Arch only. I have just updated my BIOS as well an am still receiving the same error. The fact that it happens on CD and USB tell's me it's not an optical drive issue. All information I can find on this seems to relate to hard drives failing on already installed linux boxes or faulty SATA cables. I am a bit confused why this issue would be preventing a CD/USB boot though. Is there any more info I can provide that might help uncover the source of the problem? Cheers, Jon

  • Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

    I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset.     I have a Windows Server 2008 X64 machine that I need to swap the boot drive on. I'd like to use a disk image/restore utility to make an image of the boot partition and restore that to the new drive. Does anyone know of a free or reasonably priced tool that can do this? I know that Acronis True Image will do it, but you need to have their server product to restore images of a server OS and it's prohibitively expensive ($850). Thanks, jon

    I've got two speaking gigs in the next few weeks, so I thought I'd preview both here. First I'll be at eTail West on February 24th to talk about mobile. I'll be previewing a new study of how shoppers are using mobile phones. Here's a sneak peek at one of the slides: It should be no surprise that as more consumers adopt smartphones, more are finding ways to use them to help with shopping. Sometimes that's to find a store, download a coupon, or do price comparisons. I'll also be discussing the NRF Mobile Blueprint, and will walk through an example of mobile impacting the in-store experience. Retailers need to look upon mobile as the method of bringing the digital assets of e-commerce into the aisles to enhance shopping. On March 9th I'll be at NRF Innovate co-presenting with Jon Kubo of Wet Seal on social strategies. Jon is a retail innovation rock-star and I always learn something new from every conversation with him. Below is a another slide preview: I cheated a little on the top 10 most popular retailer pages by not including Victoria's Secret Pink. VC is already represented, so I didn't include them a second time. The most interesting statistic I found was that the average user spends 55 minutes on Facebook a day. Wow! I also decided to use the old "Like" and "Fan" icons just because I like them better (pun intended).   • Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project?

    There is some code which is GPL or LGPL that I am considering using for an iPhone project. If I took that code (JavaScript) and rewrote it in a different language for use on the iPhone would that be a legal issue? In theory the process that has happened is that I have gone through each line of the project, learnt what it is doing, and then reimplemented the ideas in a new language. To me it seems this is like learning how to implement something, but then reimplementing it separately from the original licence. Therefore you have only copied the algorithm, which arguably you could have learnt from somewhere else other than the original project. Does the licence cover the specific implementation or the algorithm as well? EDIT------ Really glad to see this topic create a good conversation. To give a bit more backing to the project, the code involved does some kind of audio analysis. I believe it is non-trivial to learn or implement, although I was prepared to embark on this task (I'm at the level where I can implement an FFT algorithm, and this was going to go beyond that.) It is a fairly low LOC script, so I didn't think it would be too hard to do a straight port. I really like the idea of rereleasing my port as well as using it in the application. I don't see any problem with that, and it would be a great way to give something back to the community. I was going to add a line about not wanting to discuss the moral issues, but I'm quite glad I didn't as it seems to have fired the debate a bit. I still feel a bit odd about using open source code to learn from. Does this mean that anything one learns from an open source project is not allowed to be used in a closed source project?   • Unique Business Value vs. Unique IT

    When the age of computing started, technology was new, exciting, full of potential and had a long way to grow. Vendor architectures were proprietary, and limited in function at first, growing in capability and complexity over time. There were few if any "standards", let alone "open standards" and the concepts of "open systems", and "open architectures" were far in the future. Companies employed intelligent, talented and creative people to implement the best possible solutions for their company. At first, those solutions were "unique" to each company. As time progressed, standards emerged, companies shared knowledge, business capability supplied by technology grew, and companies continued to expand their use of technology. Taking advantage of change required companies to struggle through periodic "revolutionary" change cycles, struggling through costly changes that were fraught with risk, resulted in solutions with an increasingly shorter half-life, and frequently required altering existing business processes and retraining employees and partner businesses. The pace of technological invention and implementation grew at an ever increasing rate, making the "revolutionary" approach based upon "proprietary" or "closed" architectures or technologies no longer viable. Concurrent with the advancement of technology, the rate of change in business increased, leading us to the incredibly fast paced, highly charged, and competitive global economy that we have today, where the most successful companies are companies that are good at implementing, leveraging and exploiting change. Fast forward to today, a world where dramatic changes in business and technology happen continually, a world where "evolutionary" change is crucial. Companies can no longer afford to build "unique IT", nor can they afford regular intervals of "revolutionary" change, with the associated costs and risks. Human ingenuity was once again up to the task, turning technology into a platform supporting business through evolutionary change, by employing "open": open standards; open systems; open architectures; and open solutions. Employing "open", enables companies to implement systems based upon technology, capability and standards that will evolve over time, providing a solid platform upon which a company can drive business needs, requirements, functions, and processes down into the technology, rather than exposing technology to the business, allowing companies to focus on providing "unique business value" rather than "unique IT". The big question! Does moving from "older" technology that no longer meets the needs of today's business, to new "open" technology require yet another "revolutionary change"? A "revolutionary" change with a short half-life, camouflaging reality with great marketing? The answer is "perhaps". With the endless options available to choose from, it is entirely possible to implement a solution that may work well today, but in 5 years time will become yet another albatross for the company to bear. Some solutions may look good today, solving a budget challenge by reducing cost, or solving a specific tactical challenge, but result in highly complex environments, that may be difficult to manage and maintain and limit the future potential of your business. Put differently, some solutions might push today's challenge into the future, resulting in a more complex and expensive solution. There is no such thing as a "1 size fits all" IT solution for business. If all companies implemented business solutions based upon technology that required, or forced the same business processes across all businesses in an industry, it would be extremely difficult to show competitive advantage through "unique business value". It would be equally difficult to "evolve" to meet or exceed business needs and keep up with today's rapid pace of change.   • Numbered list with subclauses

    I'm trying to create a legal document with decimal numbered subclauses, then alpha and roman subsub and subsubsub clauses. (whew!) `1. MAIN HEADING 1.1 This is an example of a sub-clause and you can see that even though the words continue on to the right, it would be best if it wrapped around and formed a block to the right of the decimal number 1.2 In doing so the normal second clause should also wrap around but the second subsequent clause should hang in from the left and be in a block. See below for the remaining clauses (a) this list is completely for demonstration and should not be construed as legal language in any way, nor should make sense in that (b) should the indentation take more than: i) this many lines it would be overly big 11) legal numbering continues in the sub-sub clauses with the use of lower roman lettering and should flow below in a block iii) and continue the formatting on to the next line but be underneath the body of the the text and not begin directly below the number itself. In this example the text carries out to the right but I need it to wrap around underneath. Sorry its so wordy, need this to show the example. 2. Second Clause Heading 2.1 and so it continues thus I've found the examples for decimal numbering but they do not create a block out to the right of the number, and they carry on with multiple decimals rather than alpha and roman sub clauses.

  • How to do firmware updates/upgrades to a Blackberry

    I have several clients/friends that have Blackberry and wish to update their phone but without installing Windows. Any windows. Just doing it from Ubuntu. How can this be done. The update the mention is for the firmware and new programs for the phone. I do not know much about Blackberries since am more of an android guy. At the end they want support for upgrade/update the Blackberry from within Linux and sync it to the PC (Backups, upload/download stuff to and from it). I have seen 2 types of projects working on this: Linberry (From Venezuela ;) ) - http://linberry.webcindario.com/ Barry - http://www.netdirect.ca/software/packages/barry but so far neither offers updating the firmware or downloading updates. Are there any Ubuntu blackberry projects I am not aware of.

  • Is it OK to learn an algorithm from an open source project, and then implement it in a closed source project?

    Reference The post that started it all In order to clear up the original question I asked in a provocative manner, I have posed this question. If you learn an algorithm from an open source project, is it OK to use that algorithm in a separate closed sourced project? And if not, does that imply that you cannot use that knowledge ever again? If you can use it, what circumstance could that be? Just to clarify, I am not trying to evade a licence, otherwise I would not have asked the question in the first place. I believe this presents a difficult question and it is interesting to know where the debate can end up.

  • Why did an interviewer ask me a question about people eating curry?

    I had an interview question once which went... Interviewer: "Could you tell me how many people will eat curry for their dinner this evening" Me: "Er, sorry?" Interviewer: "Not the actual number just an estimate" I actually started to stumble my way through it, when I stopped and questioned what it had to do with anything about the job. The interviewer mumbled something and moved on. I guess the question is, what is the point in the ridiculous questions? I just don't understand why they started coming up with these things.
