• Can't customize the application switcher

  I'm trying to change the shortcut for switching applications from Alt+Tab to Ctrl+Tab, but changes in the System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Navigation are being ignored. Even if I disable the Switch applications shortcut entirely, it still maps to Alt+Tab. At one point I had some keys remapped with xmodmap, but since then I have deleted that configuration and rebooted. My keyboard layout settings are all defaults. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04, with all software updated this afternoon. It would also be nice to have the variation of application switching that includes one icon per window, instead of one icon per application, since I am frequently switching between windows of an application and would rather not wait for the switcher to realize I want a different window of the current application. My other Ubuntu 12.04 install has the application switcher that I like, but I'm not sure how to choose between them on this install (which was set up by my university department). • Windows 7 side Taskbar: how to have multiple icon columns?

  NOTE: I know this can be done with the taskbar on the bottom. I seek the solution for a taskbar on the side. I attached a picture of what I mean. In the screenshots, you can see that my taskbar program icons are arranged in a single column. I want to be able to have multiple columns. This would mean arranging the icons into squares and have them be placed side by side, as well as above and below one another. This can be accomplished with taskbar being on the bottom of the screen, however, I require this arrangement when I have my taskbar on the side of my screen. Currently if I expand the taskbar horizontally, it only stretches out the icons horizontally rather than turn them into small squares to make room for side by side and placement of icons. Additional icons that I add to my current taskbar are only accessible by using the horizontal scroll bar that appears at the bottom of the taskbar when there is no more space to accommodate any more icons.

• Disable Opera Thumbnail Previews on Windows 7 Taskbar

  If you are one of the people who does not care for the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews in Windows 7 then we have a quick and easy way for you to turn them off in Opera Browser. Before Here is our Opera Browser with four tabs full of HTG Network goodness… Hovering the mouse over the Taskbar Icon gives a nice preview of each tabs content. Looking closer you can see the fanned edge on the Taskbar Icon indicating that there are multiple tabs open. This is all good but what if you just want something simpler? Disabling the Previews If you want to disable the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews in Opera you will need to type opera:config in the Address Bar and press Enter. Once you have done that, you will see a condensed listing for all of Opera’s preferences. There is one Preference Category that we need to look for…User Prefs. Note: While a Quick Find Search could be conducted for the entry that needs to be modified, we have chosen to show the full method here. After scrolling down and finding the User Prefs category you will need to expand the section. Notice the size of the scrollbar in comparison with the screenshot above…there is quite a lot that you can look at and finesse in Opera if desired. Scroll down until you find the Use Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails entry. Uncheck the box but do not close the opera:config Tab yet…or your changes will not take effect. Scroll down once more until you reach the end of the User Prefs category and click Save. With this particular modification you will need to restart Opera after clicking OK. After restarting Opera the Taskbar Icon and Taskbar Thumbnail Preview will revert to the minimal Windows 7 default as shown here. You can see Opera’s Tab Bar in the thumbnail and the Taskbar Icon no longer has a “fanned edge”. Conclusion If you want to disable Opera’s Taskbar Thumbnail Previews on your Windows 7 system, then this quick modification will help get it sorted out in just a few moments. • Disable IE 8 Thumbnail Previews on Windows 7 Taskbar

  The Aero thumbnail previews are a great new feature, but if you are not a fan of the flashy eye-candy, you can get rid of them with a simple tweak. Here is how to do it. Before Here we are…Internet Explorer 8 with a lot of How-To Geek Network goodness ready to go. The Taskbar Thumbnail Previews look very nice, but perhaps they take up too much room for those of you who like to keep things simple. The Taskbar Icon has the classic “fanned edge” look just like any other software with Taskbar Thumbnail Previews active. Disabling the Thumbnail Previews If you want to deactivate the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews for Internet Explorer, it is quite easy and will only take you a few moments to complete. Open IE and go to Tools \ Internet Options. When the Internet Options Window opens you will already be on the General Tab. Under the Tabs Section, click on the Settings button. The Tabbed Browsing Settings window opens. Uncheck Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar and click OK. When you are returned to the Internet Options Window, click OK once again to totally exit out. Note: A browser restart will be required for the changes to take effect. After you have restarted Internet Explorer, you will see the simple default Taskbar Thumbnail Preview and standard icon look. Conclusion If you have been looking to disable the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews for Internet Explorer, then you are only a few clicks away from satisfaction. If you want to change it back, it is as simple as re-enabling the Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar setting. • Taskbar disappears sometimes when using a second monitor

  Windows 7 laptop, docked with a second monitor. This problem started happening when I started using the second monitor. The taskbar will often stop displaying. The Windows logo remains, but the bar, system tray, clock, and any icons for minimized programs disappear. I can see part of my desktop wallpaper where the taskbar should be. The taskbar is not set to auto-hide. Killing the explorer.exe process and starting it again temporarily fixes this. Is there a permanent solution? Thanks!

  How do you get a file opened by a batch file pinned to the taskbar? In XP you could just drag your batch file onto the quicklaunch section of the taskbar, then any file you drop on that icon would be opened with that batch file. • Windows 7 - Move open programs more freely on the taskbar

  When I used Windows XP last year, I had a program called Taskix which let me move the tabs in the taskbar around for programs in any order I wanted. Now that I have Windows 7, a similar function comes built into the operating system - however, it isn't as flexible as Taskix was in XP. Theoretical situation: 1. Open a folder named #1 2. In folder #1, open an instance of a program 3. Open a folder named #2 4. In folder #2, open an instance of the same program that was opened in step 2. After doing this, I will have (in order, on the taskbar) 2 folders open and 2 instances of the programs open. My question really is: Is there any way to fight this automatic ordering of tabs on the taskbar? A registry hack or something would be best, but if there's a third party program out there, that would be nice to know about. Thanks!

  Previously, I had pinned Google Chrome Dev to the taskbar. Being that it was unstable and crashed frequently, I decided to uninstall it. Before uninstalling, however, I did not un-pin its icon from the taskbar. Afterward, I installed Google Chrome Stable and launched it from the old pinned icon. This resulted in a new icon appearing in the taskbar. I figured this happened because the icon was originally for the Dev build, so I unpinned the icon and re-pinned Google Chrome. I launch Google Chrome again, but I still get a new icon! Re-pinning the icon should have fixed it, no? Why aren't my Google Chrome windows grouping together?

  Any one in here who has experienced this problem. The taskbar hangs whenever I: - Open a folder from a browser - Open a usb flash drive - Open a drive on my computer It really sucks, but the solution to the taskbar hangs because of opening flash drive is to remove the flash drive. Which is not safe because the file system of my flash drive is ntfs. And I can't just safely remove it because the taskbar doesnt respond when I click it. Do you know any solutions to this? Other than disabling the automatically search for printer in the folder options.

  I have a normal MFC Application with an embedded icon. If I start the application, the icon is shown inside the windows-7 taskbar. But when I change the icon inside the resources, rebuild the application and start it, the taskbar doesn't show the current icon, but the icon from the first run. There is no special code inside the application that does something specific with the windows-7 taskbar. Is there a way, (in C++) to tell the windows-7 taskbar to show the current icon?

  I like to reorder my Taskbar a bit, other than the Windows 7 default is. I use two "rows", the lower is for quicklaunch and other toolbars: This works perfectly, as long as I don't log off from the computer. Every time I log in, Windows 7 has messed up/reset the toolbar positions like this: So I have to drag them into position again and again, every morning. Fixing the taskbar positions won't help, I tried to google for the problem but it does not seem to be very common. Does anyone recognize that problem and has a solution? Update: This is not the AutoLogon bug. AutoLogon is off. We have installed Novell at our company, and it does not matter wether I log directly onto the Novell network or only to the computer first and to Novell later. Update2: I get the same issue when I logon without Novell, i.e. when I log on only to the computer. When I boot in safe mode, the taskbar looks essentially the same: Update3: KB979155 says it's "not applicable to my system". Creating a neew user is not an option since I don't have the admin privileges to do that - I have almost any other local admin privileges, though.

  I'm looking for a window manager that is not based on the "standard" taskbar (which I find a poor idea and I'm completely tired of). I'm aware of tiling window managers and improvements in last versions of operating systems, but I can't find what I need. I suppose that any window takes the whole screen (or can be tiled), and I imagine switching between windows like that: on a hotkey or mouse hot zone the screen becomes a task switcher where tasks are organized in a somewhat convenient manner. Well, it's a bit like a taskbar with autohide, but I think there could be some more convenient ideas than simply stacking icons and descriptions... It is also supposed to be lightweight enough, for example to run on a netbook. Any suggestions?

• Windows 7 Taskbar disappears overnight

  Hello all, I've got this problem that started happening recently. Overnight, something is happening that makes my taskbar disappear on my laptop. The Start orb is still there, and if I click it, it pops up the start menu, but the whole rest of the taskbar, including the background behind the start orb, is just completely vanished: tray icons, running programs, clock, everything. I tried killing explorer.exe and restarting it, but it doesn't restart. And after killing it, Task Manager won't let me start ANY programs. It gives no errors, just ... doesn't run them. Anyone else see this or know what it might be? I'm running Windows 7 RC on an IBM ThinkPad R51 with 2GB ram.

• What's normal Taskbar behavior (windows)

  I'm a fairly new user to windows, and Vista is my first version. I'm a bit confused about the taskbar -- either its behaving oddly or I'm just confused, or I've broken something. When I've got a lot of windows on screen, I thought that clicking on a window's taskbar icon would bring that window to the front. I thought it had been doing that in the past, but I'm not entirely sure. When I click it, it just flashes, a second click minimized, and a third click reopens and brings it to the front. Is this normal?
