  • wonder about some #define tricks

    - by kingkai
    Whlie reading codes of my group project, I come across many DEFINEs, and some of them seems strange. To generalize it, please look at the following 2 examples. Example 1: #define SNPRINTF(dst, fmt, arg...) snprintf(dst, sizeof(dst), fmt, ##arg) what does "##" means in this circumstance? I've tried to delete both of them, and write codes like "char buf[1024]; SNPRINTF(buf,"%s,%s","abcd","efg");" which produced the same result. So "##" seems no use and no harm to me. Example 2: #define CLOSE(fd) do { \ if (-1 != (fd)) { \ close(fd); \ (fd) = -1; \ } \ } while (0) Necessary to stuff the inner code to the do{}while(0) statement? what's the use? Thanks!

  • Structs inside #define in C++

    - by Adam Smith
    Being pretty new to C++, I don't quite understand some instructions I encounter such as: #ifndef BOT_H_ #define BOT_H_ #include "State.h" /* This struct represents your bot in the game of Ants */ struct Bot { State state; Bot(); void playGame(); //plays a single game of Ants void makeMoves(); //makes moves for a single turn void endTurn(); //indicates to the engine that it has made its moves }; #endif //BOT_H_ What I don't understand is the "#ifndef BOT_H_" and the "#define -- #endif" From what I gather, it defines a constant BOT_H_ if it's not already defined when the precompiler looks at it. I don't actually get how the struct inside it is a constant and how it is going to let me access the functions inside it. I also don't see why we're doing it this way? I used C++ a while back and I wasn't using .h files, so it might be something easy I'm missing.

  • c++: use a #define in printf?

    - by John
    I was wanting to use a constant of some kind for the application ID (so I can use it in printf). I had this: #define _APPID_ "Hello World!" And then the simple printf, calling it into %s (string). It put this out: simple.cpp:32: error: cannot convert ‘_IO_FILE*’ to ‘const char*’ for argument ‘1’ to ‘int printf(const char*, ...)’ What would I use to define the application ID to use in printf? I tried: static const char _APPID_[] = "Hello World"` but it didn't work, same error I think.

  • Why does Java's invokevirtual need to resolve the called method's compile-time class?

    - by Chris
    Consider this simple Java class: class MyClass { public void bar(MyClass c) { c.foo(); } } I want to discuss what happens on the line c.foo(). At the bytecode level, the meat of c.foo() will be the invokevirtual opcode, and, according to the documentation for invokevirtual, more or less the following will happen: Look up the foo method defined in compile-time class MyClass. (This involves first resolving MyClass.) Do some checks, including: Verify that c is not an initialization method, and verify that calling MyClass.foo wouldn't violate any protected modifiers. Figure out which method to actually call. In particular, look up c's runtime type. If that type has foo(), call that method and return. If not, look up c's runtime type's superclass; if that type has foo, call that method and return. If not, look up c's runtime type's superclass's superclass; if that type has foo, call that method and return. Etc.. If no suitable method can be found, then error. Step #3 alone seems adequate for figuring out which method to call and verifying that said method has the correct argument/return types. So my question is why step #1 gets performed in the first place. Possible answers seem to be: You don't have enough information to perform step #3 until step #1 is complete. (This seems implausible at first glance, so please explain.) The linking or access modifier checks done in #1 and #2 are essential to prevent certain bad things from happening, and those checks must be performed based on the compile-time type, rather than the run-time type hierarchy. (Please explain.)

  • Naming Suggestions For A Function Providing Method Chaining In A Different Way

    - by sid3k
    I've coded an experimental function which makes passed objects chainable by using high order functions. It's name is "chain" for now, and here is a usage example; chain("Hello World") (print) // evaluates print function by passing "Hello World" object. (console.log,"Optional","Parameters") (returnfrom) // returns "Hello World" It looks lispy but behaves very different since it's coded in a C based language, I don't know if there is a name for this idiom and I couldn't any name more suitable than "chain". Any ideas, suggestions?

  • Static method , Abstract method , Interface method comparision ?

    - by programmerist
    When i choose these methods? i can not decide which one i must prefer or when will i use one of them?which one give best performance? First Type Usage public abstract class _AccessorForSQL { public virtual bool Save(string sp, ListDictionary ld, CommandType cmdType); public virtual bool Update(); public virtual bool Delete(); public virtual DataSet Select(); } class GenAccessor : _AccessorForSQL { DataSet ds; DataTable dt; public override bool Save(string sp, ListDictionary ld, CommandType cmdType) { } public override bool Update() { return true; } public override bool Delete() { return true; } public override DataSet Select() { DataSet dst = new DataSet(); return dst; } Second Type Usage Also i can write it below codes: public class GenAccessor { public Static bool Save() { } public Static bool Update() { } public Static bool Delete() { } } Third Type Usage Also i can write it below codes: public interface IAccessorForSQL { bool Delete(); bool Save(string sp, ListDictionary ld, CommandType cmdType); DataSet Select(); bool Update(); } public class _AccessorForSQL : IAccessorForSQL { private DataSet ds; private DataTable dt; public virtual bool Save(string sp, ListDictionary ld, CommandType cmdType) { } } } I can use first one below usage: GenAccessor gen = New GenAccessor(); gen.Save(); I can use second one below usage: GenAccessor.Save(); Which one do you prefer? When will i use them? which time i need override method ? which time i need static method?

  • #Define's scope throughout library?

    - by Mohit Deshpande
    Say I have a constant: #define PI 3.14 Say I have a static library with multiple header and source files. If I declare this in the header file, will its scope apply to all of the source files? Or do the source files need to include the header with the declaration of PI?

  • The Template Method Design Pattern using C# .Net

    - by nijhawan.saurabh
    First of all I'll just put this pattern in context and describe its intent as in the GOF book:   Template Method: Define the skeleton of an algorithm in an operation, deferring some steps to Subclasses. Template Method lets subclasses redefine certain steps of an algorithm without changing the Algorithm's Structure.    Usage: When you are certain about the High Level steps involved in an Algorithm/Work flow you can use the Template Pattern which allows the Base Class to define the Sequence of the Steps but permits the Sub classes to alter the implementation of any/all steps.   Example in the .Net framework: The most common example is the Asp.Net Page Life Cycle. The Page Life Cycle has a few methods which are called in a sequence but we have the liberty to modify the functionality of any of the methods by overriding them.   Sample implementation of Template Method Pattern:   Let's see the class diagram first:            Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; • Ajax method within a added method in jQuery validator

    - by nikospkrk
    Hi, I'm kind of stuck with this pretty simple (I'm sure) jQuery/Javascript issue. Here's the code : jQuery.validator.addMethod("emailExists", function(value, element, param) { var email = value || ''; var valid = 0; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: param, data: "email=" + email, success: function(msg) { if (msg != '' && msg) { valid = 0; } else { valid = 1; } } }); return valid; }, "* Email address already registered, please login."); This function is called where a user type his email address in a registration form, and everything seems to work perfectly, except that my valid variable returned isn't updated, whereas when I use an alert box it is properly done! It looks like it return the value before the AJAX is done, any idea? Cheers, Nicolas.

  • C# String.format extension method

    - by Paul Roe
    With the addtion of Extension methods to C# we've seen a lot of them crop up in our group. One debate revolves around extension methods like this one: public static class StringExt { /// <summary> /// Shortcut for string.Format. /// </summary> /// <param name="str"></param> /// <param name="args"></param> /// <returns></returns> public static string Format(this string str, params object[] args) { if (str == null) return null; return string.Format(str, args); } } Does this extension method break any programming best practices that you can name? Would you use it anyway, if not why? If I renamed the function to "F" but left the xml comments would that be epic fail or just a wonderful savings of keystrokes?

  • Why setter method when getter method enough in PHP OOP

    - by phphunger
    I am practicing OOP with PHP, and I am struck at setter and getter methods. I can directly access the class properties and methods with getter method then what's the use of setter method? See my example. <?php class MyClass{ public $classVar = "Its a class variable"; public function Getter(){ return $this -> classVar; } } $obj = new MyClass; echo $obj -> Getter(); ?>

  • static, define, and const in C

    - by yCalleecharan
    Hi, I've read that static variables are used inside function when one doesn't want the variable value to change/initialize each time the function is called. But what about defining a variable static in the main program before "main" e.g. #include <stdio.h> static double m = 30000; int main(void) { value = m * 2 + 3; } Here the variable m has a constant value that won't get modified later in the main program. In the same line of thought what difference does it make to have these instead of using the static definition: const double m = 30000; or #define m 30000 //m or M and then making sure here to use double operations in the main code so as to convert m to the right data type. Thanks a lot...

  • C - add elements to struct by define

    - by CodeStepper
    I have a problem. I'm trying to add struct elements by previously defined constant. This is sample code (OpenGL+WinAPI) #define ENGINE_STRUCT \ HGLRC RenderingContext;\ HDC DeviceContext; And then: typedef struct SWINDOW { ENGINE_STRUCT HWND Handle; HINSTANCE Instance; CHAR* ClassName; BOOL Fullscreen; BOOL Active; MSG Message; } WINDOW; Is this possible? Thanks in advance.

  • Better solution then simple factory method when concrete implementations have different attributes

    - by danip
    abstract class Animal { function eat() {..} function sleep() {..} function isSmart() } class Dog extends Animal { public $blnCanBark; function isSmart() { return $this->blnCanBark; } } class Cat extends Animal { public $blnCanJumpHigh; function isSmart() { return $this->blnCanJumpHigh; } } .. and so on up to 10-20 animals. Now I created a factory using simple factory method and try to create instances like this: class AnimalFactory { public static function create($strName) { switch($strName) { case 'Dog': return new Dog(); case 'Cat': return new Cat(); default: break; } } } The problem is I can't set the specific attributes like blnCanBark, blnCanJumpHigh in an efficient way. I can send all of them as extra params to create but this will not scale to more then a few classes. Also I can't break the inheritance because a lot of the basic functionality is the same. Is there a better pattern to solve this?

  • When should method overloads be refactored?

    - by Ben Heley
    When should code that looks like: DoThing(string foo, string bar); DoThing(string foo, string bar, int baz, bool qux); ... DoThing(string foo, string bar, int baz, bool qux, string more, string andMore); Be refactored into something that can be called like so: var doThing = new DoThing(foo, bar); doThing.more = value; doThing.andMore = otherValue; doThing.Go(); Or should it be refactored into something else entirely? In the particular case that inspired this question, it's a public interface for an XSLT templating DLL where we've had to add various flags (of various types) that can't be embedded into the string XML input.

  • Sort method versus OrderBy LINQ extension method

    I have a class Product with an Id and a Name as properties. There are multiple ways of getting a list of products to display in sorted/ordered fashion, say, by the Name of the product. The two I’m concerned about here are the Sort and the OrderBy extension method through LINQ and the difference between them. 1: public class Product 2: { 3: public int Id { get; set; } 4: public string Name { get; set; } 5: } Below is the list of products that I’ll be using and is defined somewhere in the Program.cs...(read more)

    Quite often, there comes a question in OTN, with different subjects, all meaning "How to call a method when my ADF page loads?". More often, people tend to take the approach of ADF Phase Listener by overriding before/afterPhase methods.In this blog, we will go through different options in achieving it.1. Method Call Activity as default activity in Taskflow :If the application is built with taskflows, then this is the best suited approach to take. 1.a. Calling a Data Control Method :To call a Data Control method (ex: A method in AMImpl exposed as client interface), simply Drag and Drop the method as Default Method Call Activity, then draw a control flow case from the method to your page. Once after this, drop the taskflow as region in main page. When we run the main page, the Method Call Activity would be called first, and then the page will be rendered.1.b. Calling a Method in Backing Bean: To call a method in the backing bean before pageload, we can follow the similar approach as above. Instead of binding the Method Call Activity to an action/method binding in pagedef, we bind to the method. Insert a Method Call Activity (and make it as default) from the Component Palette. Double click on to select a method to bind. This approach can also be used, to perform some action in backing bean along with calling a method Data Control (just need to add bindings code in backing bean to execute DC method). 2. Using invokeAction Executable :If the application is built with pages and no taskflows are involved, then this option can be taken into consideration.In the page definition of the page, add an invokeAction Executable and bind it to the method needed to be executed. 3. Using combination of Server and Client Listeners : If the page does not have any page definition, then to call a method in backing bean, this approach can be taken. In this, a serverListener would be added at the document level, which would be calling the method in backing bean. Along with this, a clientListener would be added with "load" type (i.e will be triggered when the page loads), which would queue a serverEvent to trigger the method. 4. Using Page Phase Listener :This should be the last resort. Care should be taken when using this approach since the Phase Listener would be called for each request sent by the client.Zeeshan Baig's blog covers this scenario.

  • Documentation concerning platform-specific macros in Linux/POSIX

    - by Nubok
    When compiling a C/C++ program under Windows using Visual Studio (or a compiler that tries to be compatible) there is a predefined macro _WIN32 (Source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/b0084kay.aspx) that you can use for platform-specific #ifdef-s. What I am looking for is an analogon under Linux: a macro which tells me that I am compiling for Linux/an OS that claims to be (more or less) POSIX-compatible. So I looked into gcc documentation and found this: http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/cpp/System_002dspecific-Predefined-Macros.html Applied to my program, the following macros (gcc 4.4.5 - Ubuntu 10.10) looked promising (I hope that I didn't drop an important macro): #define __USE_BSD 1 #define __unix__ 1 #define __linux 1 #define __unix 1 #define __linux__ 1 #define _POSIX_SOURCE 1 #define __STDC_HOSTED__ 1 #define __STDC_IEC_559__ 1 #define __gnu_linux__ 1 #define __USE_SVID 1 #define __USE_XOPEN2K 1 #define __USE_POSIX199506 1 #define _G_USING_THUNKS 1 #define __USE_XOPEN2K8 1 #define _BSD_SOURCE 1 #define unix 1 #define linux 1 #define __USE_POSIX 1 #define __USE_POSIX199309 1 #define __SSP__ 1 #define _SVID_SOURCE 1 #define _G_HAVE_SYS_CDEFS 1 #define __USE_POSIX_IMPLICITLY 1 Where do I find a detailed documentation of them - as to the mentioned Windows-specific macros above? Additionally I'd be interested in macros normally defined for other POSIX-compliant operating systems as *BSD etc.

  • Need to modify gnome 3 theme for browser

    - by Mario De Schaepmeester
    I have recently begun using the DarkGreen theme for Gnome 3, however there are some problems on some webpages in FireFox regarding text input fields. This happens in the search field on Google, some fields on Facebook, etc... This theme uses a dark background and light color text for input fields by defaut. I have managed to modify the foreground color of input text succesfully for those fields that were never affected (from near white to gray), but it doesn't help for the "broken" fields. I also want to change the background color for all input fields to white, but I get no luck with that either. In the theme folder there is a gtk folder with a css file. Here are the relevant contents: @define-color theme_base_color #202020; @define-color theme_text_color #25DC00; /* #ffffff */ @define-color theme_bg_color #121212; @define-color theme_fg_color @theme_text_color; @define-color selected_bg_color #3E8753; @define-color selected_fg_color #ffffff; @define-color theme_selected_bg_color @selected_bg_color; @define-color menu_bg_color #555555; @define-color menu_fg_color @theme_text_color; @define-color menu_combobox_border @theme_selected_bg_color; @define-color menu_separator mix (@theme_bg_color, @menu_bg_color, 0.90); @define-color insensitive_bg_color alpha(#0b0b0d, 0.0); @define-color insensitive_fg_color alpha(#717171, 0.50); @define-color insensitive_border_color alpha(#717171, 0.50); @define-color entry_text_color /* #fafafa */ #707070; @define-color entry_background_a #ffffff; @define-color entry_background_b #ffffff; @define-color entry_background_c #ffffff; @define-color entry_background_d #ffffff; /* 121212 */ @define-color frame_color #707070; Is this CSS file the only thing I would need to change?

  • Macro not declared in this scope

    - by NmdMystery
    I'm using a preprocessor #define macro to count the number of functions in a header file: #define __INDEX -1 //First group of functions void func1(void); #define __FUNC1_INDEX __INDEX + 1 void func2(void); #define __FUNC2_INDEX __FUNC1_INDEX + 1 #undef __INDEX #define __INDEX __FUNC2_INDEX //Second group of functions void func3(void); #define __FUNC3_INDEX __INDEX + 1 void func4(void); #define __FUNC4_INDEX __FUNC3_INDEX + 1 #undef __INDEX #define __INDEX __FUNC4_INDEX //Third group of functions void func5(void); #define __FUNC5_INDEX __INDEX + 1 void func6(void); #define __FUNC6_INDEX __FUNC5_INDEX + 1 #undef __INDEX #define __INDEX __FUNC6_INDEX #define __NUM_FUNCTIONS __INDEX + 1 The preprocessor gets through the first two sets of functions just fine, but when it reaches the line: #define __FUNC5_INDEX __INDEX + 1 I get a "not defined in this scope" error for __INDEX. What makes this really confusing is the fact that the same exact thing is done [successfully] in the second group of functions; __FUNC3_INDEX takes on the value of __INDEX + 1. There's no typos anywhere, as far as I can tell... what's the problem? I'm using g++ 4.8.
