• Deleting old tomcat version and setting a new one

  I had Apache Tomcat installed by apt-get, however I decided to get a newer one, performed apt-get remove tomcat7 and apt-get purge tomcat7. I installed a newer one means the bundled Tomcat Server in NetBeans install. However, Im still seeing the old fashioned page from former Tomcat install: It works ! If you're seeing this page via a web browser, it means you've setup Tomcat successfully. Congratulations! This is the default Tomcat home page. It can be found on the local filesystem at: /var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/ROOT/index.html I already set a different port in the server.xml file and whenever I go that site after executing the startup.sh file with sudo permissions I'm not getting any site like server (new one) isn't running. How can I still be getting the page from old Tomcat install!? When I execute the startup.sh log says all is set OK, so why isn't it working?

• I can not connect to the Internet with cable

• Sound & video problem with Toshiba Satellite L35-SP1011

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Satellite L35-SP1011 and there's no sound. Actually i have many video problems cause i had to disable effect because when it had effect activated, laptop got frozen many times. I saw this problem but in older ubuntu versions and tried some fixes without success. Any idea on how to solve my audio and video problems? • Which ecommerce framework is fast and easy to customize?

  I'm working on a project where I have to put online an ecommerce system which will require some good amount of custom features. I'm therefore looking for a framework which makes customization easy enough (from an experienced developer's perspective, I mean). Language shoul be PHP and time is a constraint, I don't have months to learn. Additionally, the ecommerce will have to handle around 200.000 products from day one, which will increase over time, hence performance is also important. So far I examined the following: Magento - Complicated and, as far as I could read, slow when database contains many products. It's also resource intensive, and we can't afford a dedicated VPS from the beginning. OpenCart - Rough at best, documentation is extremely poor. Also, it's "free" to start, but each feature is implemented via 3rd party commercial modules. OSCommerce - Buggy, inefficient, outdated. ZenCart - Derived from OSCommerce, doesn't seem much better. Prestashop - It looks like it has many incompatibilities. Also, most of its modules are commercial, which increases the cost. In short, I'm still quite undecided, as none of the above seems to satisfy the requirements. I'm open to evaluate closed source frameworks too, if they are any better, but my knowledge about them is limited, therefore I'll welcome any suggestion. Thanks for all replies.

• Victor Grazi, Java Champion!

  Congratulations to Victor Grazi, who has been made a Java Champion! He was nominated by his peers and selected as a Java Champion for his experience as a developer, and his work in the Java and Open Source communities. Grazi is a Java evangelist and serves on the Executive Committee of the Java Community Process, representing Credit Suisse - the first non-technology vendor on the JCP. He also arranges the NY Java SIG meetings at Credit Suisse's New York campus each month, and he says it has been a valuable networking opportunity. He also is the spec lead for JSR 354, the Java Money and Currency API. Grazi has been building real time financial systems in Java since JDK version 1.02! In 1996, the internet was just starting to happen, Grazi started a dot com called Supermarkets to Go, that provided an on-line shopping presence to supermarkets and grocers. Grazi wrote most of the code, which was a great opportunity for him to learn Java and UI development, as well as database management. Next, he went to work at Bank of NY building a trading system. He studied for Java certification, and he noted that getting his certification was a game changer because it helped him started to learn the nuances of the Java language. He has held other development positions, "You may have noticed that you don't get as much junk mail from Citibank as you used to - that is thanks to one of my projects!" he told us. Grazi joined Credit Suisse in 2005 and is currently Vice President on the central architecture team. Grazi is proud of his open source project, Java Concurrent Animated, a series of animations that visualize the functionality of the components in the java.util.concurrent library. "It has afforded me the opportunity to speak around the globe" and because of it, has discovered that he really enjoys doing public presentations. He is a fine addition to the Java Champions program. The Java Champions are an exclusive group of passionate Java technology and community leaders who are community-nominated and selected under a project sponsored by Oracle. Nominees are named and selected through a peer review process. Java Champions get the opportunity to provide feedback, ideas, and direction that will help Oracle grow the Java Platform. This interchange may be in the form of technical discussions and/or community-building activities with Oracle's Java Development and Developer Program teams.

• Problem on login: Freeze just before user selection

  Hi, I'm using ubuntu 10.10 and when I login it shows my login's wallpaper an appears the window where I select my user without showing it and then gets frozen. No mouse response, no keyboard responde (even if I try to num/caps lock). I tried with safe mode and same thing happens, but in that case it freeze when trying to load some USB stuff, I tought it was my USB headset or my mouse so I disconnected them but doesn't works. Any advice on how to fix this, how to login to try an update or how to post more information?

This was a full day event with various sessions on J2EE 6, Java Concurrency, NoSQL, MongoDB, Oracle 12c, Oracle ADF etc. It was an overwhelming response from students, auditorium was jam packed with 600+ LPU energetic students of B.Tech and MCA stream. Navein Juneja Sr. Director LPU gave the keynote and introduced the speakers of AIOUG and Delhi & NCR Java User Group (DaNJUG). Mr. Juneja explained about the LPU and its students. He explained how Oracle and Java is most used and accepted technologies in world. Rohit Dhand Additional Dean LPU came on stage and share about how his career started with Oracle databases. He encouraged students to learn these technologies and build their career. Satyendra Kumar vice-president AIOUG thanked LPU and their stuff for organizing such a good technical event and students for their overwhelming response.  He talked about the India Oracle group and its events at various geographical locations all over India. Jitendra Chittoda Co-Leader DaNJUG explained how to make a new Java User Groups (JUG), what are its benefits and how to promote it. He explained how the Indian JUGs are contributing to the different initiatives like Adopt-a-JSR and Adopt-OpenJDK. After the inaugural address event started with two different tracks one for Oracle Database and another for Java and its related technologies. Oracle Open World and Oracle Develop are better options for submitting product specific talks. Make your title catchy. Remember the attendees are more likely to read the abstract if they like the title. We try our best to recategorize the talk to a different track if it needs to but please ensure that you are filing in the right track to have all the right eyeballs looking at it. Also, it does not hurt marking an alternate track if your talk meets the criteria. Make sure to coordinate within your team before the submission - multiple sessions from the same team or company does not ensure that the best speaker is picked. In such case we rely upon your "google presence" and/or review committee's prior knowledge of the speaker. • Geek Bike Ride Sao Paulo

  What do you do on sunny Saturday in Sao Paulo when you have several Java enthusiasts, street lanes closed off for bicyclists, new cool Duke jerseys, and some wonderful bike angels to provide a tour through the city? A GEEK BIKE RIDE, of course! The weekend before JavaOne Latin America, the Sao Paulo geek bike ride was held today. We had 20+ riders and a wonderful route that took us from the Bicycle Park to and through downtown. It was a 30Km ride, but our hosts were kind enough to give riders the option to take the subway for part of the trip. Thanks to our wonderful bike angels, the usual rental bike problems like rubbing brakes, dropped chains, and even a flat tire were handled with ease.  The geek bike ride wasn't just for out-of-towners. Loiane Groner, who lives in Sao Paulo said, "I love the Geek Bike Ride! The last time I was in these parts of the city, I think I was five years-old!" A good time was had by all. (My only crash of the day was riding up an escalator with my bike. • Thunderbird opens twice always

  I have Thunderbird on Ubuntu 12.04 and every time I open it, it loads twice. Two windows are opened. To be clear, if I have Thunderbird closed (not minimized) and click on Mail, in the tray bar, it opens 2 main windows. I have had installed several add-ons, including FireTray and "Minimize to Tray Revived", but now I have removed all of them. Actually I can disable all the add-ons and it still happening. Any ideas?

• Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?

  What a difference a year makes, indeed. Steve Harris, Senior VP, App Server Dev, Oracle and Adam Messinger, VP, Fusion Middleware Group, Oracle presented an informative keynote at the TheServerSide Java Symposium today. With a title "Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?" you know things are going to be interesting (see Aeon Flux if you don't get the title reference).What a YearThey started with a little background, explaining that the reactions to Oracle's acquisition of Sun (and therefore Java) one year ago varied greatly, from "Freak Out!" to "Don't Panic." From the Oracle perspective, being the steward of and key contributor to Java requires a lot of sausage making.  They admitted to Oracle's fair share of Homer Simpson-esque "D'oh" moments in the past year, which was complicated by Oracle's communication style.   "Oracle has a tradition has a saying a few things and sticking by then, in contrast to Sun who was much more open," Adam explained. "We laid out the Java roadmap and are executing on it, and we hope that speaks to our commitment."Java SEAdam talked about having a long term perspective on the Java language (20+ years), letting ideas mature in more experimental languages, then bringing them into Java. Current priorities include: JVM convergence (getting the best features of JRockit into Hotspot); support of parallel/multi-core programming, and of course, all the improvements in JDK7. The JDK7 Developer Preview is underway (please download now and report bugs!). The Oracle development team is also working on Lambda and modularity (Jigsaw) for SE 8. Less certain, but also under discussion are improvements for Java SE 9. Adam is thinking of it as a "back to basics" release. He mentioned reworking JNI, improving data integration and improved device support.Java EE To provide context about Java EE, Steve said Java EE was great at getting businesses on the internet. The success of Java EE resulted in an incredible expansion of the middleware marketplace for developers and vendors.  But with success, came more. Java EE kept piling on capabilities, but that created excess baggage.  Doing simple things was no longer so simple. That's where Java community is so valuable: "When Java EE was too complex and heavyweight, many people were happy to tell us what we were doing wrong and popularize solutions," Steve explained. Because of that feedback, the Java EE teams focused on making things simple again: POJOs and annotations, and leveraging changes in Java SE.  Steve said that "innovation doesn't happen in expert groups, it happens on the ground where developers are solving problems," and platform stewards need to pay attention and take advantage of changes that are taking place.Enter the Cloud "Developers are restless, they want cloud functionality from their own IT dept" Steve explained. With the cloud, the scope of problem has expanded to include the data center itself, with multiple tenants. To move forward, existing APIs in Java EE need to be updated to be tenant-aware, service-enabled, and EE needs to support various styles of deployment. The goal is to get all that done in Java EE 8.Adam questioned Steve about timing and schedule. "Yes, the schedule is aggressive, but it'll work" Steve said. Then Adam asked about modularization. If Java SE 8 comes out at the end of 2012, when can Java EE deliver modularization? Steve suggested that key stakeholders can come with up some pre-SE 8 agreement on how to expose the metadata about modules. He then alluded to Mark Reinhold and John Duimovich's keynote at EclipseCON next week. • GParted doesn't see any partition

  What I am trying to do couldn't be more logical I think. I have a 40gb drive with two partitions, Xp and Ubuntu. I have dual boot, everything boots and works perfectly. I have about 9gb free in the Windows partition When I run Gparted I only see 40gb unallocated space, booting from Gparted Live CD. What the hell is going on ? I've read everywhere this is a common problem, however it has no sense something like this remains unsolved by gparted developers, considering what I am trying to do is the very basic step anybody wanting to migrate from Windows to Linux would od Something like this honestly doesn't give anything else than frustration Could anybody on this forum be so kind to explain whats' going on ? Thanks

• Ubuntu confuses my partitions

  I have 3 relevant partitions split between 2 disks, sda2: Windows 1 partition sda3: Ubuntu partition sdb1: Data partition I was using pysdm to add a label to my partitions and somehow I seem to have screwed up my installation. Now, every time I access the Data partition mounted in /media/Data I see the files in my Windows partition, and viceversa. I've tried unmounting and remounting correctly to no avail, it seems that wherever I mount sda2, if I access that folder I get the files in sdb1, and viceversa. Anyone know what may have happened and how to solve this? • How to detect UTF-8-based encoded strings [closed]

  A customer of asked us to build him a multi-language based support VB6 scraper, for which we had the need to detect UTF-8 based encoded strings to decode it later for proper displaying in application UI. It's necessary to point out that this need arises based on VB6 limitations to natively support UTF-8 in its controls, contrary to what it happens in .NET where you can tell a control that it should expect UTF-8 encoding. VB6 natively supports ISO 8859-1 and/or Windows-1252 encodings only, for which textboxes, dropdowns, listview controls, others can't be defined to natively support/expect UTF-8 as you can do in .NET considering what we just explained; so we would see weird symbols such as é, è among others, making it a whole mess at the time of displaying. So, next function contains whole UTF-8 encoded punctuation marks and symbols from languages like Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, French and others, based on an excellent UTF-8 based list we got from this link - Ref. http://home.telfort.nl/~t876506/utf8tbl.html Basically, the function compares if each and one of the listed UTF-8 encoded sentences, separated by | (pipe) are found in our passed string making a substring search first. Whether it's not found, it makes an alternative ASCII value based search to get a match. Say, a string like "Societé" (Society in english) would return FALSE through calling isUTF8("Societé") while it would return TRUE when calling isUTF8("SocietÈ") since È is the UTF-8 encoded representation of é. Once you got it TRUE or FALSE, you can decode the string through DecodeUTF8() function for properly displaying it, a function we found somewhere else time ago and also included in this post. When I was in graduate school, I developed a Java system that displayed worked out the logics of getting the maximum coverage using the fewest resources (for example, the minimum number of soldiers [and positions] needed for a battlefield. It may seems not difficult, but it's a hard problem to solve, mathematically. Here I was, a freshman, who came up with an app  "solving" it. Some Master's students use my software today. It was then I began to believe in what I could do.OTN: What most inspires you about programming?I'm really inspired by the challenges and tension that comes from solving a complicated problems. Lately, I've been doing a new system focused on education and digital inclusion and was very gratifying to see it working and the results. I felt useful for the community. OTN: What are some things you would like to accomplish using Java?Java is a very strong platform and that gives us power to develop applications for different devices and purposes, from home automation with little microcontrollers to systems in big servers. I would like to build more systems that integrate the people life or different business contexts, from PCs to cell phones and tablets, ubiquitously. I think IT has reached a level where the current challenge is to make systems that leverage existing technologies that are present in daily life. Java gives us a very interesting set of options to put it into practice, especially in systems that require more strength.OTN: What technical insights into Java technology have been most important to you?I have really enjoyed the way that Java has evolved with Oracle, with new features added, many of them which were suggested by the community. Java 7 came with substantial improvements in the language syntax and it seems that Java 8 takes it even further. I also made some applications in JavaFX and liked the new version. The Java GUI is on a higher level than is offered out there. I saw some JavaFX prototypes running in modern tablets and I got excited. OTN: What would you like to be doing 10 years from now?I want my work to make a difference for individuals or an institution. It would be interesting to be improving one of the systems that I am making today. Recently I've been mixing my hobbies and work, playing with Arduino and home automation. The JHome project, winner of the Duke's Choice Award in 2011, is very interesting to me.OTN: Do you listen to music when you write code? If so, what kind?Absolutely! I usually listen to electronic music (Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold), rock (Metallica, Strokes, The Black Keys) and a bit of local alternative music. I live in Goiânia, "The Brazilian Seattle" and I profit from it very well. OTN: What do you do when you're not programming?I like to play guitar and to fish. Last year I sold my economy car and bought a old jeep. Some people called me crazy, but since then I've been having a great time and having adventures on the backroads of Brazil. • Is it more difficult to upgrade your certification from SQL Server 2008 to 2012 than to get it from scratch?

  I was wondering about the new MCSA certification on SQL 2012 and how it seems to be more difficult to upgrade your certification from 2008 to 2012 than to get the 2012 from scratch. Reason I think that is true is because anyone with any MCTS SQL Server 2008 certification can upgrade it to a MCSA 2012 by passing 2 tests (457 and 458). If you try to get it from scratch, you need to pass 3 tests (461, 462 and 463 - which are pretty much the same as 432, 433 and 448 for SQL 2008). But the thing is, even though its one test less to upgrade, all the skills necessary to pass 461, 462 and 463 are squeezed on 457 and 458 so, it seems easier to get from scratch than upgrade. Any thoughts?

• Magento - How to manage multiple base currencies and multiple payment gateways?

  I have two requirements to satisfy, I hope someone with more experience can help me sorting them out. Multiple Base Currencies My client wants to allow visitors to place orders in whatever currency they prefer, choosing from the ones he’ll configure. Magento only supports one Base Currency, and this is, obviously, not what I need. I checked the solution involving multiple websites, but I need a customer to be registered once and stay on the same website, not to switch from one to the other and have to register/log in on each. Manage multiple Payment Gateways per currency and per payment method This is another crucial requirement, and it’s tied to the first one. My client wants to “route” payments in different currencies to different accounts. He’ll thus have one for Euro, one for USD and one for GBP. Whenever a customer pays with one of these currencies, the payment gateway has to be chosen accordingly. Additionally, the gateway should be different depending on other rules. For example, if customer pays with a Debit Card, my client will have a payment gateway configured especially for it. If customer pays with MasterCard, the gateway will be different, and so on. The complication, in this case, arises from the fact that my client uses Realex Payments and, although it would be possible for him to open multiple accounts, the Realex module expects one single gateway. In a normal scenario, we would need up to six instead: Payment with Debit Card in Euro Payment with Credit Card in Euro Payment with Debit Card in US Dollars Payment with Credit Card in US Dollars Payment with Debit Card in GB Pounds Payment with Credit Card in GB Pounds This, of course, if he doesn’t decide to accept other payment methods, such as bank transfer, which would add one more gateway per currency. Is there a way to achieve the above in Magento? I never had such complicated requirements before, and I’m a bit lost. Thanks in advance for the help.

• Duke's Choice Award Goes Regional

  We are pleased to announce the expansion of the Duke's Choice Award program to include regional awards in conjunction with each international JavaOne conference.  The expanded Duke's Choice Award program celebrates Java innovation happening within specific regions and provides an opportunity to recognize winners locally. Apache Software Foundation Hadoop Project The Apache Software Foundation’s Hadoop project, written in Java, provides a framework for distributed processing of big data sets across clusters of computers, ranging from a few servers to thousands of machines. This harnessing of large data pools allows organizations to better understand and improve their business. AgroSense Project Improving farming methods to feed a hungry world is the goal of AgroSense, an open source farm information management system built in Java and the NetBeans platform. • Phone crash when try to use vibration on Android

  Im developing an app that when you click a button the phone has to vibrate, the issue is that the phone just chashes. Saing that I need permitions to vibrate. I've already set this permition in the build.setting (android manifiest).
