• How do I get an Epson al-c 1700 printer working?

  I have a brand new epson aculaser c1700 and i'd like to have it working fine on ubuntu 12.04. so i did my homework, kind of, no printer driver comes for this printer in cups ... so i asked epson support who drove me to avasys who no longer handle support since december 2011. This the question that is still in my mind : as this printer comes with an osx driver which uses cups as printer server, how come no driver can be found for cups? I tried to get ppd and filters from osx driver and use them to install the printer on ubuntu but no answer from printer and none printed sheet i have .... i'm so disappointed i could cry ... I'd like to work with someone to get this working fine, please help me!

• Which, among the humble indie bundle V games, work on 10.04?

  Inevitably, I've coughed up for the latest Humble Bundle, containing 5 games: Amnesia, Bastion, Limbo, Psychonauts and Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery. At the download page it says download for ubuntu but after that it transpired (after much head scratching) that the three games it lists "are not available for your version of ubuntu". The other two, Bastion and Psychonauts "will appear on the page soon", but until then does anybody think they might work? I don't want to to be disappointed after downloading a 4gb file, causing me to reminisce on childhood memories of loading 8-bit tape games for 45 minutes only to find out that you had to reload them once you died after 30 seconds in.

• A Closed Mind Killed the Retail Star

  Im on the plane flying back to New Zealand and Im astonished how quickly things have changed since I was last in the US. This trip I visited LA, Las Vegas and San Francisco and I was overwhelmed by the change that I witnessed in 12 short months. • .NET Libraries Cost More Than Windows?

  When looking into libraries to make my programming life a little bit easier I've (almost) always been disappointed by the prices offered. For instance, Actipro's WPF Studio is $650. I suppose that's worth it if you plan to make money from the use of those controls. But take a look at, say, Windows. Windows 7 Ultimate is just about $220. I consider Windows to be a far more complex and "worth-it" product/purchase than a library that runs on it. Why the significant difference in pricing? Do libraries really need to be so expensive, or do they need to charge more in order to make a decent some of money?

Email #1: The results of  detailed survey of UK ISVs which we had commissioned – what makes them tick etc. In that survey it stated “76% of ISVs do not use any ALM tools”. It also stated that of those that did, most only did the basics. I#m not surprised … but I am disappointed. An old system was to be ported to C# and he would like this measure as part of the project planning. From some (apparently creditable) source he had the answer of "10 SLOC/month" but he was not happy with that. The group agreed that this was nearly impossible to specify because it would depend on a long list of circumstances. But we could tell that the man would not leave (or be very disappointed in us) if we did not come up with an answer suiting him better. • Ubuntu DVR - what are the options?

  According to my research, the best solution to use ubuntu server as a DVR system would be ZoneMinder. is there any alternatives to zoneminder out there? I'm not really happy it only has a web interface to control/view my cameras. And it doesn't have an option to record video stream non-stop. Am I missing something in its configuration? And the thing I really disappointed, I cant find a way to control my PTZ camera with it. what do manufacturers sell along with their standalone linux powered dvr systems?

  After installing Ubuntu 11.04 I was disappointed by the fact there are still Scala 2.7 (when 2.8 is long ago current actual branch) and Mono 2.6 (when pretty a time has passed after 2.8 release). I am not sure I could build all the packages for Mono myself, but I'd like to try making my own custom version of Scala package (and I want my system to accept it not as a different package but a version of the original, so that if I put it into a configured repository, the system will automatically upgrade to it from currently installed original 2.7). Can you recommend a good tutorial on this subject (Ubuntu deb packages building and hacking for beginners)?

  I know there are site tools to check if your webpage is alive, has compression, etc but lets not get into that. What are useful sites to paste code in and to share links to it? The three i know are http://codepad.org/ shows source and runs code online http://www.pastie.org/ share source with syntax highlighting http://jsfiddle.net/ great for JS help or for the occasional test. What else do you know of? One answer per question. I'll let lints and validators slide since you do paste code into them. Mention a weakness if you do know one so others wont be surprised or disappointed.

  Is it possible to remove the "Search and launch" whateveritis from my "desktop"? I've actually tried both Desktop and Netbook modes, but it stays there in both of them. I'm not afraid of editing files in the ~/.kde dir, but I would be really disappointed if this is the only way to do it. [more details/rants] I was able to wipe out several things but I've ended up with a black window that's movable (Alt-click) but not removable. Beside being surprised by the performances, I find Kubuntu extremely unfriendly, and I can't find the logic behind the items of the interface. I've tried to search for documentation, but what I've found is not updated and doesn't include the Netbook interface.

I thought the rest of the world is a better place . So I complained about the word quality and all that while i quit . One year has taught me a lot of things and I feel XYZ is a much better place (in terms of freedom and decision making in work) . Is it ok to go back ? • How can I give my client "full access" to their PHP application's MySQL database?

  I am building a PHP application for a client and I'm seriously considering WordPress or a simple framework that will allow me to quickly build out features like forums, etc. However, the client is adamant about having "full access" to the database and the ability to "mine the data." Unfortunately, I'm almost certain they will be disappointed when they realize they won't be able to easily glean meaningful insight by looking at serialized fields in wp_usermeta, etc. One thought I had was to replicate a variation on the live database where I flatten out all of those ambiguous and/or serialized fields into something that is then parsable by a mere mortal using a tool as simple as phpMyAdmin. Unfortunately, the client is not going to settle for a simple backend dashboard where I create the custom reports for them even though I know that would be the easiest and most sane approach.

• Wow, no words enough for my disappointment

  Really cannot describe the disappointment felt at this moment.  A month ago there was rumor out there saying Surface tablet will be around $200.  Even though everybody agreed at the time that's not possible, or fair to Microsoft partners, the expectation was set.According to Paul Thurrott (http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/microsoft-surface-pricing-availability-144526), the tablet starts at $499, but without the keyboard cover (Seriously, this is like offering Lincoln with manual shift).  The more disappointed fact is that there is no version that comes with cellular capability.  I was debating whether to get one, but now that decision is very easy.I'll wait.

• Max Brightness in ubuntu lower when compared to windows

  I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my (new) ThinkPad Edge330. Everything worked quite well so far. I've noticed that the screen wasn't that bright and was a bit disappointed of the ThinkPad, but then I realized that the brightness was much better on a parallel windows 7 installation I did later on. I already used this tip: Max brightness on NetBook I did increase the brightness to an acceptable level (could be the actual max. brightness, or is there a way to increase it even further?) But now unfortunately I cannot change the screen brightness at all anymore. Not by using the FN keys or in the system settings.

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD.   So, it has been more than 3 years without a single blog post. I wished I could have a decent excuse for it, but in the end, I guess it boils down to laziness and procrastination. :-) Even though I learned a lot in that period (and added a feel tricks to my bag), I couldn’t find the will to sit down and write. I hope all my readers (yes mom and dad, I’m talking to you) have not been disappointed. I will try really hard not to let routine take over. • My laptop overheat on ubuntu 13.04

  Overheating maybe is exaggerating word, but it's temperature is more in comparison with windows. My Graphic Card has failed for 2 time and I've paid money for each time. The problem makes me disappointed of keeping on ubuntu. Whenever I want to install "nvidia-current" my resolution becomes too low in screen and sometimes it just shows a dark screen. Is there any other Linux distribution which be more compatible with Hardware, specially Graphic Card? My Laptop is Dell Vostro 1510. And once This problem happened in 12.04 and another time days ago :(

We each time need to seek to resolve the malfunctions. my problem is , I am getting a message as Getting information, please wait and it don't disappear. My firewall is completely deactivate and I already go to the UAC or the firewall to allow the "exe" of the Ubuntu One software in the settings. Nothing runs.Linux never run at the first time. • I've totally missed the point of distributed vcs [closed]

  I thought the major benefit of it was that each developers code gets stored within each others repository. My impression was that each developer has their working directory, their own repository, and then a copy of the other developers repository. Removing the need for central server, as you have as many backups as you have developers/repositories Turns out this is nto the case, and your code is only backed up (somewhere other than locally) when you push, the same as a commit in subversions. I am bit disappointed ... hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it handles merges better and there are less conflicts ?
