• SQL SERVER – Copy Database – SQL in Sixty Seconds #067

  There are multiple reasons why a user may want to make a copy of the database. Sometimes a user wants to copy the database to the same server and sometime wants to copy the database on a different server. The important point is that DBA and Developer may want copies of their database for various purposes. I copy my database for backup purpose. However, when we hear coping database – the very first thought which comes to our mind is – Backup and Restore or Attach and Detach. Both of these processes have their own advantage and disadvantages. The matter of the fact, those methods is much efficient and recommended methods. However, if you just want to copy your database as it is and do not want to go for advanced feature. You can just use the copy feature of the SQL Server. • Why does VNC eat certain characters?

  I often use VNC to connect to my desktop upstairs using a laptop downstairs over my home network. I tunnel the VNC connection via SSH. The problem I keep running into is that I'll attempt to type a ! or a : or even a captial A and it will come across the wire as a 1, ;, or a respectively. Is this something I can fix? It's really REALLY annoying while one is programming to have to pop open character map and find a colon and copy/paste it in each time. Running Ubuntu 10.04 upstairs, Linux Mint 10 downstairs.

• JavaME - LWUIT images eat up all the memory

  Hi, I'm writing a MIDlet using LWUIT and images seem to eat up incredible amounts of memory. All the images I use are PNGs and are packed inside the JAR file. I load them using the standard Image.createImage(URL) method. The application has a number of forms and each has a couple of labels an buttons, however I am fairly certain that only the active form is kept in memory (I know it isn't very trustworthy, but Runtime.freeMemory() seems to confirm this). The application has worked well in 240x320 resolution, but moving it to 480x640 and using appropriately larger images for UI started causing out of memory errors to show up. What the application does, among other things, is download remote images. The application seems to work fine until it gets to this point. After downloading a couple of PNGs and returning to the main menu, the out of memory error is encountered. Naturally, I looked into the amount of memory the main menu uses and it was pretty shocking. It's just two labels with images and four buttons. Each button has three images used for style.setIcon, setPressedIcon and setRolloverIcon. Images range in size from 15 to 25KB but removing two of the three images used for every button (so 8 images in total), Runtime.freeMemory() showed a stunning 1MB decrease in memory usage. The way I see it, I either have a whole lot of memory leaks (which I don't think I do, but memory leaks aren't exactly known to be easily tracked down), I am doing something terribly wrong with image handling or there's really no problem involved and I just need to scale down. If anyone has any insight to offer, I would greatly appreciate it.

• How do I find and replace 'whole words only', in Microsoft Word?

  I want to be able to find and replace eat with Eat in Microsoft Word 2007. However, I don’t want to replace every occurrence of eat such as those that can be found inside other words such as great and meat. I have tried doing this using the regular Find and Replace tool, but I get words with capital letters in the middle. Is there a way I can just replace eat with Eat if it only exists on its own?

• Apples, oranges, and pointers to the most derived c++ class

  Suppose I have a bunch of fruit: class Fruit { ... }; class Apple : public Fruit { ... }; class Orange: public Fruit { ... }; And some polymorphic functions that operate on said fruit: void Eat(Fruit* f, Pesticide* p) { } void Eat(Apple* f, Pesticide* p) { ingest(f,p); } void Eat(Orange* f, Pesticide* p) { peel(f,p); ingest(f,p); } OK, wait. Stop right there. Note at this point that any sane person would make Eat() a virtual member function of the Fruit classes. But that's not an option, because I am not a sane person. Also, I don't want that Pesticide* in the header file for my fruit class. Sadly, what I want to be able to do next is exactly what member functions and dynamic binding allow: typedef list<Fruit*> Fruits; Fruits fs; ... for(Fruits::iterator i=fs.begin(), e=fs.end(); i!=e; ++i) Eat(*i); And obviously, the problem here is that the pointer we pass to Eat() will be a Fruit*, not an Apple* or an Orange*, therefore nothing will get eaten and we will all be very hungry. So what I really want to be able to do instead of this: Eat(*i); is this: Eat(MAGIC_CAST_TO_MOST_DERIVED_CLASS(*i)); But to my limited knowledge, such magic does not exist, except possibly in the form of a big nasty if-statement full of calls to dynamic_cast. So is there some run-time magic of which I am not aware? Or should I implement and maintain a big nasty if-statement full of dynamic_casts? Or should I suck it up, quit thinking about how I would implement this in Ruby, and allow a little Pesticide to make its way into my fruit header?

• Why does the Java VM process eat up more RAM then specified in -Xmx parameter?

  I have multiple servers running CentOS 5.4 and only one application running on Java VM. I've configured the Java VM with the following arguments: java -Xmx4500M -server -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:NewSize=1024m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote=true The machines I'm running the VM on has 6 GB RAM and no other applications running. After a while, the java process starts to hit the swap space really hard, I get this info out of the top command: 7658 root 25 0 11.7g 3.9g 4796 S 39.4 67.3 543:54.17 java On the other hand, if I connect via JConsole, it reports the Java VM has 2.6 GB used, 4.6 GB commited and 4.6 Gb max. java -version returns: java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode) Why is the Java VM expanding so much past it's allocated heap size? And where does that memory go, if it's not reported in JConsole?

  offshore outsourced programmers charge fraction of what costs a North American developer. should I still pursue my major as computing science ? Why would companies spend more on North American/local developers where they can get the same quality if not better job done offshore ? I am just concerned for the development labor market, the free market wants the lowest cost provider. not just programming but many high skilled labor such as engineering, scientists, artists and etc. perhaps i should become a lawyer ?

  I can't figure out how to call a base class method from a derived class method but concurrently applying this method call at an object passed as argument. • Game Center alternatives for non-iOS development

  I have completed a game for iOS which integrates GameKit. I am happy with Game Center however my game also has an HTML5 web version and will soo have an Android version. My question is what alternatives do I have for non-iOS platforms but primarily for Android and to a lesser extent a Javascript/Web SDK. I looked at Openfeint a year ago and it seemed to be a good solution back then but am not sure if this is still the case? Note, I have no plans to replace what I already have in my iOS game and I understand the leader boards, users, and achievements won't be shared out of Game Center.

• How to enable tab completion from the terminal specific to the executable

  In bash, I believe it is possible to enable tab completion on the terminal for terms that are specific to the executable being invoked. For example, given an executable "eat" with valid arguments {cake, carrot, banana}, typing 'eat car' should complete to 'eat carrot'. I believe this is possible because I have seen it with 'ant' tab-completing its targets (though how this was set up I don't know). How can this behaviour be implemented?

How exatly does virtual inheritance solve the problem? What I understand: When I say A *a = new D();, the compiler wants to know if an object of type D can be assigned to a pointer of type A, but it has two paths that it can follow, but cannot decide by itself. So, how does virtual inheritance resolve the issue (help compiler take the decision)?

  I am working on generating report for showing customer using LINQ in C#. I want to show no. of customers of each type. There are 3 types of customer registered, guest and manager. I want to group by customers by registered date and then by type of customer. i.e If today 3 guest, 4 registered and 2 manager are inserted. and tomorrow 4,5 and 6 are registered resp. then report should show Number of customers registerd on the day . separate row for each type.   I'm trying to parse some text using PyParser. The problem is that I have names that can contain white spaces. So my input might look like this: Joe Bob Jimmy Foo Joe decides to eat. Bob decides to not eat. Jimmy Foo decides to eat. How can I create a parser for the decides to eat line? If I create my name parser naively, meaning with alphabetic characters plus space characters, then it will match the entire line.
