  • puppet master --compile logs errors to stdout

    - by danny
I see a bug about this that was accepted and then closed a year ago: http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/3670 but I'm using puppet 2.7.14 and am getting the same issue. I'm trying to use "puppet solo" (i.e. just running puppet apply on each server to be configured) as I only have 2 or 3 servers in this project and adding another server as a puppetmaster would be completely overkill. Unless I'm mistaken, the best way to apply a node manually to a server is to do: puppet master --compile=mynode > catalog.json puppet apply --catalog catalog.json But the puppet master command outputs a couple of warnings and notices to stdout, mixed in with the desired json content. And it uses colored output so I can't just pipe it through egrep -v '^warning:' EDIT: I guess it's not too big of a deal to use grep - since puppet 2.7 pretty-prints the actual content and the warnings don't ever start with spaces, piping the output through egrep '^( |{|})' works So my questions are basically: Is there a better way than this to apply a puppet node without using a puppetmaster? I can't really find any good references online to using puppet without a puppetmaster, even though that seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do for a small project. Is there a setting or flag that I'm missing that will get puppet master to stop being an asshole and send its errors to stderr instead of stdout? Or do I really have to turn off color logging, then grep to exclude warning: and notice: lines?

  • NFS headaches with FreeBSD 4.9

    - by Ernie
Once upon a time, this used to work, and I kept the configuration the same, but... now nothing. I'm just trying to get an NFS server set up on a FreeBSD 4.9 server. The process should be about as complicated as this: Add this entry to /etc/exports: /var/home /var/vpopmail/domains -maproot=root XXX.XX.XX.XXX Execute this: portmap nfsd -u -t -n 4 mountd -r Then this should work, regardless of network and firewall issues: showmount -e localhost But showmount -e localhost fails with the following error: RPC: Port mapper failure showmount: can't do exports rpc And even if I kill off the NFS daemon, and try a rpcinfo -p localhost, I get this error: rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: rpcinfo: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection reset by peer The portmapper is still running. Why the heck does nothing work as if it isn't? Edit to add: FYI: Sockstat gives me this: $ sockstat |egrep "(nfsd|portmap)" root nfsd 86310 3 udp4 *:2049 *:* root nfsd 86310 4 udp4 *:973 *:* root portmap 45920 0 tcp4 *:111 *:* Then, at a later time (say, 5 minutes) it's as if nfsd isn't acting as a server: $ sockstat |egrep "(nfsd|portmap)" root portmap 45920 0 tcp4 *:111 *:* But the nfs daemon is still running: $ ps ax |grep nfsd 86311 ?? I 0:00.00 nfsd: server (nfsd) 86312 ?? I 0:00.00 nfsd: server (nfsd) 86313 ?? I 0:00.00 nfsd: server (nfsd) 86314 ?? I 0:00.00 nfsd: server (nfsd)

  • Imagemagick convert with resample option

    - by coneybeare
I am creating thumbnails from much larger images and have been using this command successfully for some time: convert FILE -resize "64x" -crop "64x64+0+16" +repage -strip OUTFILE I also do some other processing that is not relevant to the question. I realized that this does not adjust the resolution at all, so if I use a 300dpi image, it ends up displaying really small on some devices. I want to resample it to 72x72 so I have been trying with this command: convert FILE -resize "64x" -crop "64x64+0+16" +repage -strip -resample 72x72 OUTFILE And expected the 64x64 image at 300dpi to be resampled to a 64x64 image at 72dpi, but instead, I am getting a very funny size and density. Here is "identify" output for the original and post-processed file WITHOUT the resample: coneybeare $ convert "aa.jpg" -crop "64x64+0+16" +repage -strip "aa.png" coneybeare $ for image in `find . -type f`; do identify $image; identify -verbose $image | egrep "^ Resolution"; done ./aa.jpg JPEG 1130x1695 1130x1695+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 1.492MiB 0.000u 0:00.000 Resolution: 300x300 ./aa.png PNG 64x64 64x64+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 7.46KiB 0.000u 0:00.000 Resolution: 118.11x118.11 And here is the "identify output for the command WITH the resample: coneybeare $ convert "aa.jpg" -crop "64x64+0+16" +repage -strip -resample 72x72 "aa.png" coneybeare $ for image in `find . -type f`; do identify $image; identify -verbose $image | egrep "^ Resolution"; done ./aa.jpg JPEG 1130x1695 1130x1695+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 1.492MiB 0.000u 0:00.000 Resolution: 300x300 ./aa.png PNG 15x15 15x15+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 901b 0.000u 0:00.000 Resolution: 28.34x28.34 So, the question is: What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it so the end result is a 64x64 cropped thumbnail image at 72dpi?

  • Bash completion doesn't work, or is ignoring what I've typed; but works for commands

    - by Neil Traft
Bash completion seems to be ignoring what I've typed (it tries to complete, but acts as if there's nothing under the cursor). I know I saw it work on this machine earlier today, but I'm not sure what has changed. Some examples: cd shows all directories under my current folder: $ cd co<tab><tab> cmake/ config/ doc/ examples/ include/ programs/ sandbox/ src/ .svn/ tests/ Commands like ls and less show all files and directories under my current folder: $ ls co<tab><tab> cmake/ config/ .cproject Doxyfile.in include/ programs/ README.txt src/ tests/ CMakeLists.txt COPYING.txt doc/ examples/ mainpage.dox .project sandbox/ .svn/ Even when I try to complete things from a different folder, it gives me only the results for my current folder (telling me that it is completely ignoring what I've typed): $ cd ~/D<tab><tab> cmake/ config/ doc/ examples/ include/ programs/ sandbox/ src/ .svn/ tests/ But it seems to be working fine for commands and variables: $ if<tab><tab> if ifconfig ifdown ifnames ifquery ifup $ echo $P<tab><tab> $PATH $PIPESTATUS $PPID $PS1 $PS2 $PS4 $PWD $PYTHONPATH I do have this bit in my .bashrc, and I have confirmed that my .bashrc is indeed getting sourced: if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ] && ! shopt -oq posix; then . /etc/bash_completion fi I've even tried manually executing that file, but it doesn't fix the problem: $ . /etc/bash_completion There was even one point in time where it was working for ls, but was not working for cd ... but I can't replicate that result now. Update: I also just discovered that I have terminals open from earlier that still work. I ran source .bashrc in one of them and afterwards completion was broken. • Terminal Colors Not Working

    - by Matt Fordham
I am accessing an Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS server via SSH from OSX. Recently the colors stopped working. I think it happened while I was installing/troubleshooting RVM, but I am not positive. In .bashrc I uncommeneted force_color_prompt=yes, and when I run env | grep TERM I get TERM=xterm-color. But still no colors. Any ideas? Thanks! Hello! I have an issue with terminal in Ubuntu 10.04. When I launch it, it hangs, like this: I cannot do anything until I press CTRL+C: I cannot remember when this started. What can be wrong? • Why doesn't this simple regex match what I think it should?

    - by Kevin Stargel
I have a data file that looks like the following example. I've added '%' in lieu of \t, the tab control character. 1234:56% Alice Worthington alicew% Jan 1, 2010 10:20:30 AM% Closed% Development Digg: Reddit: Update%% file-one.txt% 1.1% c:/foo/bar/quux Add%% file-two.txt% 2.5.2% c:/foo/bar/quux Remove%% file-three.txt% 3.4% c:/bar/quux Update%% file-four.txt% 4.6.5.3% c:/zzz ... many more records of the above form The records I'm interested in are the lines beginning with "Update", "Add", "Remove", and so on. I won't know what the lines begin with ahead of time, or how many lines precede them. I do know that they always begin with a string of letters followed by two tabs. So I wrote this regex: generate-report-for 1234:56 | egrep "^[[:alpha:]]+\t\t.+" But this matches zero lines. Where did I go wrong? Edit: I get the same results whether I use '...' or "..." for the egrep expression, so I'm not sure it's a shell thing.

  • Format a timestamp into text

I want to get the Modify date of a file and then format it into a human readable date. I am running a C program that gets information on when a particular file was last modified. My C Code contains a sytem cmd which contains a number of egreps, awks, seds separated by pipes. I am installed a SVN server (v1.6) on a VPS contracted with CentOS 5, Apache 2.2 with WHM panel. I installed and configured all necessary modules and am able to create and access repositories via my web browser normally. The problem: I can not commit or import anything, always return permission errors: First error: Can not open file '/var/www/svn/test/db/txn-current-lock': Permission denied After fix the previous error: Can't open '/var/www/svn/test/db/tempfile.tmp': Permission denied And other... I've defined the owner as apache or nobody and different permissions for folders and files. I'm using TortoiseSVN to connect to the server. Some information that may find useful: I'm trying to perform commit through an external HTTP connection, like: svn commit http://example.com/svn/test SELinux is disabled. sestatus returns SELinux status: disabled Running the command to see the active processes of Apache, some processes are left with user/group "nobody". I tried changing the settings of Apache to not run with that user/group, but all my websites stopped working, returning this error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. • USB mouse does not work on boot

    - by Uku Loskit
My problem is pretty much a duplicate of the one described in USB mouse late to load , but the solution there has not worked for me. I'm running the same OS and experiencing the exact same issue. It disappears after 10 seconds or so. Booting with the options specified in the other question did not fix it :/ Thanks in advance. sheepz@sheepz-desktop:~$ dmesg | egrep "hci|usb" [ 0.188000] usbcore: registered new interface driver • No sound from internal speaker but headphones OK

    - by Aris Boch
The problem: The system won't play sound on the internal speaker of the laptop, but only on the headphone. When I put the headphone jack half in and fiddle around with it, then it'll play even on the internal speakers (the system apparently believes, that the headphone are in). What should I do? The technical data: Laptop modell Medion Erazer X6815 matatabisama@matatabisama-X6815:~/Downloads$ sudo aplay -l | egrep ^card card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog] card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC269VB Digital [ALC269VB Digital] card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Ubuntu 12.04 64 matatabisama@matatabisama-X6815:~/Downloads$ uname -a Linux matatabisama-X6815 3.2.0-30-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 24 16:52:48 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  • Profiling NetBeans 7.0 Beta 2 and Reporting Problems

    - by christopher.jones
With NetBeans 7.0 recently going into Beta 2 phase, now is the time to test it out properly and report issues. The development team has been squashing bugs, including memory issues with the PHP bundle. There are some great new PHP related features in NetBeans 7.0, so you know you want to try it out.If you identify something wrong with NetBeans, please report it following the guidelines http://wiki.netbeans.org/IssueReportingGuidelinesDepending on the issues, data to attach to the report is mentioned on: http://wiki.netbeans.org/FaqLogMessagesFile and http://wiki.netbeans.org/FaqProfileMeNowIf you have a memory issue then a memory dump would also be useful. Run the jmap tool for this. There is some background information on http://wiki.netbeans.org/FaqMemoryDump. Here's how I used it.First I set my environment to match the JDK used by NetBeans. In my case I am using a nightly build so the JDK is in the configuration file under $HOME/netbeans-dev-201102210501:$ egrep netbeans_jdkhome $HOME/netbeans-dev-201102210501/etc/netbeans.conf netbeans_jdkhome="/home/cjones/src/jdk1.6.0_24" $ export JAVA_HOME=/home/cjones/src/jdk1.6.0_24 $ export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH Next, I found the correct process number to examine:$ ps -ef | egrep 'netbeans|jdk'cjones   23230     1  0 16:07 ?        00:00:00 /bin/bash /home/cjones/netbeans-cjones   23438 23230  2 16:07 ?        00:00:09 /home/cjones/src/jdk1.6.0_24/binFinally I used the parent JDK process as the jmap argument:$ jmap -histo:live 23438 num     #instances         #bytes  class name----------------------------------------------   1:         12075        9028656  [I   2:         49535        6581920  <constMethodKlass>   3:         49535        3964128  <methodKlass>   4:         80256        3840776  <symbolKlass>   5:         36093        3635336  [C   6:          5095        3341312  <constantPoolKlass>   7:          5095        2486016  <instanceKlassKlass>   8:          4325        1961432  <constantPoolCacheKlass>   9:         18729        1763976  [B  10:         59952        1438848  java.util.HashMap$Entry  . . .This histogram memory report will help identify the kind of memory issues you are seeing. It may not be as complete as an often tens of megabyte jmap -dump:live,file=/tmp/nbheap.log 23438 heap dump, but is much more easily attached to a bug report. If you want to keep up to date with NetBeans, nightly builds are at: http://bits.netbeans.org/download/trunk/nightly/latest/zip/

  • How Do I grep For non-ASCII Characters in UNIX

    - by Peter Conrey
I have several very large XML files and I'm trying to find the lines that contain non-ASCII characters. I've tried the following: grep -e "[\x{00FF}-\x{FFFF}]" file.xml But this returns every line in the file, regardless of whether the line contains a character in the range specified. Do I have the syntax wrong or am I doing something else wrong? I've also tried: egrep "[\x{00FF}-\x{FFFF}]" file.xml (with both single and double quotes surrounding the pattern).

  • How would I write this shell script as a Windows batch script?

    - by Jeremy Banks
I haven't had a chance to test this script, I'm just using it as a suitable pseudocode. It's just supposed to copy all files in the current directory into a timestamped subdirectory. ID="$(date +%Y%b%d%H%M%S)" COMMITABLE="$(ls | egrep --invert-match ^(STATES|PARENT)\$)" STATE_PATH="$(pwd)/STATES/$ID" mkdir --parents "$STATE_PATH" cp $COMMITABLE "$STATE_PATH" ln -s "$STATE_PATH" PARENT

  • nginx problem accessing virtual hosts

    - by Sc0rian
I am setting up nginx as a reverse proxy. The server runs on directadmin and lamp stack. I have nginx running on port 81. I can access all my sites (including virtual ips) on the port 81. However when I forward the traffic from port 80 to 81, the virtual ips have a message saying "Apache is running normally". Server IPs are fine, and I can still access virtual IP's on 81. • tar a directory and only include certain file types

    - by Susan
Following the instructions here: http://linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/lpt/20_08.html I'm aiming to tar up a directory but only want to include .php files from that directory. Given the aforementioned instructions, I've come up with this command. It creates a file called IncludeTheseFiles which lists all the .php files, then the tar is supposed to do it's job only using the files listed in IncludeTheseFiles find myProjectDirectory -type f -print | \ egrep '(\.[php]|[Mm]akefile)$' > IncludeTheseFiles tar cvf myProjectTarName -I IncludeTheseFiles However, when I run this it doesn't like the I include option? tar: invalid option -- I

  • find files where group permissions equal user permissions

    - by Jayen
Is it possible to do something like find -perm g=u? I say "like" because -perm mode requires mode to specify all the bits, not just g, and because I can't put u on the right side of the =, like I can with the chmod command: you can specify exactly one of the letters ugo: the permissions granted to the user who owns the file (u), the permissions granted to other users who are members of the file's group (g), and the permissions granted to users that are in neither of the two preceding categories (o). At the moment, I'm doing find | xargs -d \\n ls -lartd | egrep '^.(...)\1 which is just ugly. Thanks.
