  • prevent IE8 tabs from opening as a new "process in the taskbar"

    This may have been asked before too... But, anyways. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, and IE 8, and have the taskbar in icon view. I'm not sure how to explain this, but I'm amazed at how each tab in IE8 seems to act like a new "process" in the taskbar (as if each tab was a window). Like... each tab acts like a different window in the taskbar although they are actually running in the same window. Now when I use IE 8 it looks (in the taskbar) like there's 15 windows open when in fact the taskbar is simply showing the 15 tabs. More simply put, it's displaying a "stack" for all of the tabs when I'd rather have the icon act like, for example, firefox so that a stack is only shown for the multiple windows. I know that they are meant to be running as separate processes to prevent crashing and the such... but is there a way to disable this strange "taskbar" effect? I'd rather have the taskbar show the main window and not the tabs individually.

If i click on "tab "1 the selected index returned is correct. But when click on tabs in the second level ("tab 1-xx") the event is fired too. I want to resctriced the bind('tabsselect', function(event, ui) on the first level of tab (tab x). How can i do that ? Thanks

    I set up some jQuery tabs to start off with no tabs selected like this: $('#tabs').tabs( { selected: -1 } ); Then I also have a separate link that when pressed needs to deselect all the tabs. $("#deselectButton").click(function(){ $('#tabs').tabs( 'select' , -1 ) }); or $("#deselectButton").click(function(){ $('#tabs').tabs( 'selected' , -1 ) }); The deselectButton click does deselect the tabs content, however the tabs title remains active with the class 'ui-tabs-selected ui-state-active'. What is the correct way to deselect all the tabs?

  • Unknown CSS font-family oddity with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8

    I am seeing the following "oddity" with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8: When declaring font-family: serif; I am seeing an old bitmapped serif font that I can't identify (see screenshot below) instead of the expected font Times New Roman. I know it's an old bitmapped font because it displays aliased, without any font smoothing, with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8 (just like Courier on every version of Win). Screenshot: I would like to know (1) can anyone else confirm my research and (2) BONUS: which font is IE displaying? Notes: IE6 and IE7 on Win XP displays Times New Roman, as they should. It doesn't matter if font-family: serif; is declared in an external stylesheet or inline on the element. Quoting the CSS attribute makes no difference. Adding "Unkown Font" to the stack also makes no difference. New Screenshot: The answer from Jukka below is correct. Here is a new screenshot with Batang (not BatangChe) to illustrate.     I am using jquery UI tabs and I need to majorly change the styling on it. I need to rempve the background image, the borders, almost everything. I need it to look minimal, and not like it's self contained. What's the best way to do this? I need to use the default UI styling for the calendar widget however, which is on the same page. I've done a lot of research and everyone seems to point to the theme-roller. However, i do not just want to change the colors and border radii. I need to delete crap. theme-roller seems to be just change things like colors (not really useful for the real world) Is it even worth using jquery UI for my tabs?

This doesn't happen for users who are running Excel 2007, but for users with Excel 2003 it may or may not happen to them. The files in question are Excel XML files and Internet Explorer 6 and Excel 2003 are being use. At this time it would not be possible to upgrade Internet Explorer, but it would be able to upgrade to Excel to version 2007 if that would resolve the issue. Overdue Update: We recently upgraded to Firefox at the office which has rendered this error a non-issue; however, it is still unresolved from the standpoint that we haven't been able to come up with an explanation to the issue. Since IE6 is still installed on the systems, a fix to the problem (or explanation of why it's happening) would be appreciated.

    Now, I know that this may seem like a bad question in that I can just upgrade to Internet Explorer 8, but I am sticking with IE6 in that IE8 removes valuable features, like the ability to save favorites offline and the fact that a file path turns into a Windows Explorer window and typing a Web address into Windows Explorer changes it into an IE window. I know that Internet Explorer 6 does a really bad job at rendering some pages. I know of the Google Chrome Frame extension that brings Chrome-style rendering into IE, but that will soon be discontinued. So, I tried another thing: I know that C:\Windows\System32\mshtml.dll contains the Trident rendering engine that is used by IE, so I tried something: I first backed up the original file by renaming it on Windows XP to mshtml-old.dll, then I tried to copy in the DLL from a computer running Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 10. I noticed that, after copying, the system had replaced the new DLL with the old one, but left the one I backed up intact. Is there any way I can get the system to not replace the DLL like that so that I can transfer in IE11's mshtml.dll into Windows XP and make IE6 render like IE11? I'm looking for an answer that describes how to tweak my system to make IE6 render like IE11 (or IE10), not one that tells me to upgrade IE or install another browser. I don't care how tedious the method is, just as long as it works.

  • How to Customize the Internet Explorer 8 Title Bar

    If you’re looking for a way to personalize IE 8, one method is to customize the Title Bar. Here we look at a simple Registry hack that will get the job done. The Internet Explorer Title Bar is displayed on the top of the browser with the site name followed by Windows Internet Explorer by default. If you have a small office you might want to change it to the company name, or just change it something more personal at home.   Customize the IE 8 Title Bar Note: Before making any changes to the Registry, make sure to back it up. The first thing we need to do is open the Registry by typing regedit into the Search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter. With the Registry open, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main. Then create a new String Value and name it Window Title. Right-click on the Window Title String and enter in whatever you want to display on the Title Bar in the Value data field and click OK. When you’re done, you should see the new String called Windows Title with whatever you entered in as the value. Close out of the Registry. Restart or launch Internet Explorer and you’ll now see your new text in the Title Bar. If you want to change it to something else, just go in and modify the Value data. If you want to switch it back to the default, just go back in and delete the string we created. A lot of times you’ll see corporate branding already in the title bar from your ISP or some computer company. To get rid of it, check out The Geek’s article on how to remove it. This should work with other versions of Internet Explorer as well.     If you like to tweak and customize IE with Add-ons and changing settings, sometimes you may have problems with stability. To save time, you can reset all of the IE settings rather than trying to troubleshoot individual areas. Reset IE Settings To reset Internet Explorer Settings, click on Tools then Internet Options. When you reset the settings, you won’t lose personal settings like your homepage, search provider, passwords…etc. The Internet Options screen opens…click on the Advanced tab, then under Reset Internet Explorer settings click on the Reset button. You’ll need to verify that you want to reset all Internet Explorer Settings. If you choose to, you can delete all of your personal settings as well, but it shouldn’t be necessary to fix stability issues. The settings will start to reset, and when it’s finished close out of the message box. For the process to complete you’ll need to restart Internet Explorer. When it restarts you’ll be presented with the Welcome screen where you can go through the setup wizard again. After it’s complete, you should be back in business and can start using IE again. With the new enhancements and features available in Internet Explorer 8, sometimes too much tweaking can cause it to stop working. One area you could start with is troubleshooting IE 8 Add-ons.   • Chromium/Chrome tabs crashes on Ubuntu/Edubuntu 12.04.3

    For some reason the tabs of Chromium and Chrome have started to crash (He's dead Jim) when running on Ubuntu or Edubuntu 12.04.3. It seems to happen only when I log in. I tried the browsers on Ubuntu 13.10 and everything worked fine. Any suggestions? Ps. The browser doesn't crash, just the tabs, and I can open new ones (but they also crash after a while).     Firefox doesn't exit when I close the last tab, just by doing some customization in about:config. But now, my company has to work with some website that only works well on Internet Explorer. I currently use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP SP3. So, how do I prevent Internet Explorer 8 from exiting when closing the last tab? I've searched for such a feature for a while but found nothing helpful. FYI I gave up with my "customization habit", now I'm trying to live with IE world, ... phew...
