  • Encrypt backups with GPG to multiple tapes

    - by Dan
Currently, I use tar to write my backups (ntbackup files) to a tape drive fed by an autoloader. Ex: tar -F /root/advancetape -cvf /dev/st0 *.bkf (/root/advancetape just has the logic to advance to the next tape if there is one available or notify to swap the tapes out) I was recently handed the requirement to encrypt our tape backups. I can easily encrypt the data with no problems using GPG. The problem I'm having is how do I write this to multiple tapes with the same logic that tar uses to advance the tapes once the current one is filled? I cannot write the encrypted file to disk first (2+TB). As far as I can tell, tar will not accept binary input from stdin (it's looking for file names). Any ideas? :(

  • Fossil gpg workflow for teams

    - by Alex_coder
I'm learning fossil and trying to reproduce a workflow for two people modifying the same source code tree. So, Alice and Bob both have local repositories of some source code. Both have autosync off. Alice hacks some more, does some commits signing check-ins with her gpg key. This part is fine, as Alice I've managed to generate gpg keys, fossil asked me the key password when commiting. I'm also aware of gpg-agent but don't use it yet, because I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible for now. Now, at some point Bob pulls changes from Alice's fossil repo. How would he verify Alice's signed check-ins?

  • How do I integrate GPG with alpine?

    - by Thomas
I have tried a couple of howtos, but they seem to either be too out of date or just plain don't work (don't work for me, at least). How do I sign and encrypt messages, as well as check integrity of received messages (and decrypt them if needed) in pine/alpine? I tried pipeing (with "|") but the terminal doesn't seem to cooperate so that I can provide my passphrase.

New to Ubuntu. In the other sofware sources i have "Debian 4.0 eth" officially supported "non-us.debian.org/"; etc ... "ppa.launcpad.net" and installing applications has stopped working. • gpg error - connection already closed?

    - by OopsForgotMyOtherUserName
omg... hope someone can help me because I am so lost as to what to try next.... I don't know what is causing the error to happen, and I don't see how to figure it out... Keep going between the pgloader.conf examples and what I have, and I don't understand why I keep getting the 'connection already closed' error? The first few lines of my fr.conf is at the very end... I'd really appreciate / love some guidance here... Been trying to get this thing going all morning, and am even getting stuck just on this part... Running this command at the command line: /usr/bin/pgloader -c /var/mybin/pgconfs/fr.conf Yields this in the pgloader.log (with the process just hanging) more /tmp/pgloader.log 27-03-2010 12:22:53 pgloader INFO Logger initialized 27-03-2010 12:22:53 pgloader INFO Reformat path is ['/usr/share/python-support/pgloader/reformat'] 27-03-2010 12:22:53 pgloader INFO Will consider following sections: 27-03-2010 12:22:53 pgloader INFO fixed 27-03-2010 12:22:54 fixed INFO fixed processing 27-03-2010 12:22:54 pgloader INFO All threads are started, wait for them to terminate 27-03-2010 12:22:57 fixed ERROR connection already closed 27-03-2010 12:22:57 fixed INFO closing current database connection [pgsql] host = localhost port = 5432 base = frdb user = username pass = password [fixed] table = fr format = fixed filename = /var/www/fr.txt ...

  • GPG - why am I encrypting with subkey instead of primary key?

    - by khedron
When encrypting a file to send to a collaborator, I see this message: gpg: using subkey XXXX instead of primary key YYYY Why would that be? I've noticed that when they send me an encrypted file, it also appears to be encrypted towards my subkey instead of my primary key. For me, this doesn't appear to be a problem; gpg (1.4.x, macosx) just handles it & moves on. But for them, with their automated tool setup, this seems to be an issue, and they've requested that I be sure to use their primary key. I've tried to do some reading, and I have the Michael Lucas's "GPG & PGP" book on order, but I'm not seeing why there's this distinction. I have read that the key used for signing and the key used for encryption would be different, but I assumed that was about public vs private keys at first. In case it was a trust/validation issue, I went through the process of comparing fingerprints and verifying, yes, I trust this key. While I was doing that, I noticed the primary & subkeys had different "usage" notes: primary: usage: SCA subkey: usage: E "E" seems likely to mean "Encryption". But, I haven't been able to find any documentation on this. Moreover, my collaborator has been using these tools & techniques for some years now, so why would this only be a problem for me?

  • Smartcards for storing gpg/ssh keys (Linux) - what do I need?

    - by Ninefingers
Hi All, I'm interested in storing my SSH keys and gpg keys on a smartcard for added security. However, I'm a bit uncertain on a few points, which are as follows: How many keys can I get on a card? I assume both SSH and GPG can store keys on the card. Is there a limit to key size? I see a lot of cards saying they support 2048-bit keys, what about larger sizes? Hardware: can anyone recommend a card/reader combination that works well? I've done a fair amount of research and it seems PC/SC readers can be a bit iffy - is this your experience? Have I missed anything I should be asking? Are there any other hurdles? I'm aware fsf europe give away cards with membership - I'm not sure I want to join, but... are these cards any good?

  • the size of apt-get update lists is too big

    - by dumb906
I ran a clean install to Ubuntu 12.04 and so far everything has been working well. I especially commend the Ubuntu team for this release. I only noticed that the size of repository update is now about ~13MB. Normally, it is about this size for the first time you run apt-get update after a clean install and then ~ 23kb - 1300kb for subsequent updates. The output from apt-get update is the same I get for previous versions of Ubuntu (its pretty normal). Its a bit too long but look at an example output I got from running apt-get update. • Ubuntu Extras keyring error

    - by Pawan Neupane
Recently I got lots of GPG errors and tried the following methods at various stages: sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 3E5C1192 sudo apt-get install -reinstall ubuntu-extras-keyring (For Ubuntu Extras only) gpg –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv 3E5C1192 gpg –export –armor 3E5C1192 | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update sudo aptitude -o Acquire::http::No-Cache=True -o Acquire::BrokenProxy=true update sudo -i apt-get clean cd /var/lib/apt mv lists lists.old mkdir -p lists/partial apt-get clean apt-get update I again got BADSIG error for extras.ubuntu.com today. So, I'm really at a loss what's causing this error to occur time and again. I really want to solve this problem once and for all.

  • Trouble signing Code of Conduct

    - by Lionthinker
So I've spent quite some time trying to sign this code of conduct and am on the verge of abandoning it. Got right to the sign the txt file stage https://launchpad.net/codeofconduct/1.1/+sign but now I get an error and am just tired of fighting with Ubuntu. It has to do with the clearsign thing in the terminal. See below $ gpg --clearsign UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.1.txt You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for user: "Leon Gert Marincowitz (for launchpad) <[email protected]>" 2048-bit RSA key, ID 715FBC94, created 2012-06-16 gpg: can't open `UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.1.txt': No such file or directory gpg: UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.1.txt: clearsign failed: file open error

  • Thunderbird adds ***UNCHECKED*** to subjects of GPG messages

    - by Roman Geber
Thunderbird seems to consider it a great idea to add the string UNCHECKED in front of the subject of GPG encrypted messages. Well, its not a good idea but rather annoying. At first I thought it would be a mailserver thing, so I checked. No trace of it, anywhere. Same goes for the raw message source. When I look at it the subject appears untouched, therefore I assume its a Thunderbird thing. Does anyone know an option to turn this ill behavior off? Thanks a lot in advance! cu Roman

  • RPM issues after signing JDK 1.6 64-bit

    - by organicveggie
I'm trying to sign the Java JDK 1.6u21 64-bit RPM on CentOS 5.5 for use with Spacewalk and I'm running into problems. It seems to sign okay, but then when I check the signature it seems to be missing the key I just used to sign it. I have tried this with two different keys and two different users on the same machine without any success. Any bright ideas?

  • Can I decrypt an encrypted file even if someone modified it?

    - by kiruthika
Warning: This question has been heavily edited. I tried my best to guess the original author's intentions. Please view the original version. I'm unsure on how to use the GPG command line tool, that we're using to encrypt files. File.txt is a simple text file: Testing hello world My security things. This is how I encrypt the file: gpg --symmetric File.txt This gives me a new, encrypted file: File.txt.gpg If someone else now modifies the encrypted file, I'm no longer able to decrypt it. $ gpg --decrypt File.txt.gpg gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. gpg: decrypt_message failed: eof How can I get the content of my file, even though someone has modified it?

  • How do I check user's unlocked achievement and leaderboard scores via GPG plugin

    - by noob
I need to load user's achievement and their scores from leaderboard in my game. But the Social.LoadScore() and Social.LoadAchievements() both returns a 0 size array in callback. When I checked the implementation in Google Play Gaming's PlayGamePlatform.cs, both the method has this summary - Not implemented yet. Calls the callback with an empty list. So my question is How do I get this data in Unity? Has anyone tried any other method to get the data?

  • Release upgrade crashes with "W:Failed to fetch http://host/debian/dists/oneiric/Release.gpg"

    - by Nolan Dillard
My update manager told me that it has not checked for updates in the past 18 days, so I clicked the "check" button. It works just fine until a certain point where it says "Downloading release". The loading bar moves across the screen for a while on that message, then it just stops and says to check my Internet connection. I am fairly certain that my Internet is fine, as I can do anything else that I have tried, including installing software over the Internet. I clicked on "Details" and this is what turned up: Log
