• Set Up Remote Desktop at Home

  I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm unable to find a clear set of instructions. I'm currently using LogMeIn Hamachi to enable Windows 8's Remote Desktop feature on my home computer (running Win8 Pro x64). Unfortunatley, I can't use this method to access my home computer from my Surface Tablet, as I can't install in the Hamachi client. So how can I set up Remote Desktop without using LogMeIn Hamachi? A link to a noob-friendly tutorial would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to find anything that I understand (and I am pretty technical, router stuff just stumps me for some reason). EDIT: And I don't want to use a third party service like TeamViewer, in my experience those tools are laggy and quite horrible. The Remote Desktop feature has been excellent.

• rc.local is not executed on bootup ubuntu

  Im on Ubuntu 10.04. I want to execute script on system boot. I added it to rc.local. If I execute rc.local manually it works fine. If I boot system in recovery mode(2nd string in boot menu) it also works fine. But if I boot normally it is not executed. However i added sleep 20 to my script and there is a pause at the end of boot process, but nothing more is executed. • Windows Server 2008 SOMETIMES blocks connection to an FTP Site

  Hello Everyone Recently, our company has been having issue connecting to a special FTP server that we use offsite to upload small files. We can connect to the test server perfectly fine, but when we use the production ftp, it only randomly connects. If I plug my laptop directly into the modem and pull one of our other static IP addresses, I can connect just fine, but if I use our internal network, it is hit or miss. Also, turning OFF the firewall does NOT change the status of our connection problems. It will still time out. The weird issue is that it sometimes works, and when it does, it instantly asks for credentials and logs us on for that session, but if we disconnect and try again, it may or may not work. This also coincidentally occurred after uninstalling hamachi, and it blew away our internet settings on our Windows Server 2008 box, but everything else is working fine, and it was working fine before hamachi was installed.

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. • Multiple Devices connecting to VPN on CentOS server

  I am looking for a solution as to what would be the VPN software for multiple OSes and Devices. I currently have 15 systems to connect to a VPN. I was using Hamachi from LogMeIn but their lack of Android support really upsets me, and their limited support for Linux OSes is also a let down. 90% of my systems are Ubuntu 11+ systems, only 2 are Windows XP. But I also have a few people, maybe 3 that need to connect to it from Android devices. This is where Hamachi has let me down and I want to move to my own VPN solution. The server would be a simple VPS running CentOS. So I need some VPN software that allows connection of those to a Linux based server. I wanted to go with OpenVPN, but I am under the opinion that in any OS you have to have their software to connect to the VPN. Ubuntu supports VPN's out of the gate, but OpenVPN requires extra software to be installed, I don't want this if I can help it. Same with Windows and same with Android. Plus android mostly requires rooted devices for OpenVPN, at least from what I've read. I was looking at maybe L2TP, but I'm not sure how easy it is to get Ubu systems connected with it as I haven't found much on the subject, let alone Window's XP machines. I know Android connects out of the gate to it. I don't know much about L2TP but I know it's a pain to get running in CentOS from what I have read. Now the last option is some sort of software for PPTP but I've never read anything on it and don't know if all systems are compatible with it. What would be your solution to these devices and multiple OSes? OpenVPN seems to be my heading I just don't like it that it always requires software to run and rooted Android Devices. Any solutions for this and install solutions? Maybe a different OS for the server like Ubuntu would make another type of VPN easier?

• MySQL prevents server from booting unless password is entered

  I am kind of new with Ubuntu but I have been working on setting up a LAMP server with hamachi as a vpn client for management. The issue is that when we turn the server on or restart it we are required to enter the MySQL password before it will continue. Where can we script a password or disable this? • Comunication from Server to Client + Client LAN

  I'm having some trouble with some network setup. I've tried OpenVPN, SocialVPN, Hamachi, still it is not working. This is my setup: Server A: NIC 1 with internet public address, NIC 2 to LAN Client B PC: NIC 1 (192.168.10.2) connects to router 192.168.10.1 Client B Device: 192.168.10.3 (Configured via software, can't do much here) Problem: Server A must connect to cliente device B. (I can install software needed at Client B PC). However... I can't change the router to some model with VPN like Draytek or Cisco :( OpenVPN fails at bridging, PC B can ping Server A, but Server A can't ping Device B, only PC B. What else can I do?!?!?

• Increase the compression performance of VPN

  I am currently switching from a system with HPN-SSH tunnels and enabled compression to something VPN based. I have tried tinc and n2n so far, hamachi requires a library I do not have. In my primitive benchmarks I am not satisfied with the achievable bandwidth compared to the SSH tunnels. In tinc the low LZO setting performed best, but compression is only available in UDP mode. Ideally I would like to have a TCP-based VPN with a multi-threaded compression. Can you suggest me some ideas how to increase the performance? Would it be possible to somehow put a compression filter in front of the tun interface? Or are there any VPN implementations that might be better suited for my needs (fast compression, TCP-based, switch mode, does not have to be super-secure)? I would consider tunnelling Ethernet over SSH, but according to some articles it is not advisable.

  I have a VPN connection that I use while away from home to remote into my home network. I would use a zero config solution like Hamachi, but need access from my mobile device. Therefore, I have my Windows Home Server acting as the VPN server and will accept incoming connections. Both the username and password are strong. However, I'm worried about brute force attacks against my network. Is there something else that I should do to protect my network from having unauthorized access attempts to my network? I'm familiar with Linux's FAIL2BAN, but wasn't sure if something similar existing for Windows.

• Real time audio streaming

  I have a remote computer running OS X. I would like to stream the audio from the microphone input over the network so I can listen to it. Primarily I want to do this because I'm out of the office but still need to communicate with people there. I would like to use VLC, but am not fully aware of the options available. I tried SoundFly (as recommended by another answer) but this didn't seem to want to connect. At this point I should note that I'm using a VPN network to connect to the remote computer (using Hamachi). I can open up ports / etc fine though, so I should be able to do this. Alright, I found Nicecase which does exactly what I want but I would prefer to not have to shell out $40 for it.

Our shared drive is a network folder on a Windows Server located at one of our locations. The current connection speed is terrible. The upload speed at the current location of the shared drive is very slow. We looking for a NAS device that we can host at another location with better upload speed that all of us can access. • AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. Also, the reddit thread has a few answers, for anyone curious. It's located here. It is entirely possible that it's just my school wifi blocking out my laptop, and my home wifi sucks.   Hello, I'm looking for possible solutions to the following need: I have a VPN configured (using openVPN over Linux, BTW), and I want to know at any moment which hosts are connected to it. I recognize that it probably is the same thing as trying to know which hosts are connected to a lan, so any of the solutions might do the job... The fact is that I once used a hamachi vpn on linux and with it I had the chance to know which hosts were connected to a particular network where I belonged, so I was wondering if something similar might be possible in openVPN (or even any VPN and/or any LAN). Preferably, I'm looking for opensource/free sw solutions, or maybe the hints to program it myself (in the most simple way if possible, not that I don't know how to program, but I'm trying to achieve this in a simple manner). • Migrate Domain from Server 2008 R2 to Small Business Server 2011

  I'm looking for some advice here, rather than the big how to do it I'm looking for what do to I have this home server, quad core and 4 GB of ram (I really can't afford more right now). With a Windows Serve 2008 R2 With ActiveDirectory and a Hyper-V-Virtual machine with SharePoint, TFS and a couple of more thigs. I have a least 10 remote users, all of them joined a Hamachi VPN (working great by the way). But I want to migrate that to a Small Business Server 2011 Standard. I tried to make a VM to join the domain and then promote that VM, back up it and then format the physical server, boot up the VM, Promote the Phisical and then erase the VM, but I can't do that because of SBS requiring a least 4 GB of ram to install (so I can't give all the 4 GB of physical ram to a VM). I was thinking in using a laptop (All the clients are laptop) as a temporal server, join the domain, promote it, then format the server and install SBS on the server and do all again. I really need some advice. Thanks in advance. BTW, I know that the software I'm using is kindda expensive, and I can't afford more hardware. I have access to MS downloads by a University partnership so I have all this software for free.

• VPN - Accessing computer outside of network. Only works one way

  I could use some help here. My ideal goal is to create a VPN for 2 macs that are in different locations so that they can share each others screens and share files. I basically want to do what Logmein's Hamachi does, but without the 5 user limitation. I have set up the VPN on my Synology NAS at my house using the PPTP protocol. I could also use OpenVPN. The good news is that I can use a laptop outside of my home network to access any computer on my network at my house. The bad news is that I can not do the reverse. I want to use a computer in my home network (same network as the VPN server) to access a computer outside of my network (which is connected via VPN successfully). My internal IP is 192.168.1.xxx PPTP VPN assigns my laptop that is outside of my network with 192.168.5.xxx, but when I try to access it remotely either with afp://192.168.5.xxx or vnc://192.168.5.xxx I can't connect using either. Is this something that I should be able to do or is VPN only one way? I've also tried openvpn with the same results. Thanks for any help! -Dan
