• Ubuntu Deluge checking downloads at start-up slow

  I am downloading a very large torrent (~60GB) and when deluge clients starts up it takes a lot of time to check the parts downloaded during witch it uses a lot the hardisk that leads to a very slow computer. Is there a way to skip this checking ? or make it be less aggressive on the hardrive ?

• How to change harddrive spindown time?

  if I run my notebook on battery mode, ubuntu spindown my hardrive every few seconds. How can I fix that? I have tried it with sudo hdparm -S 127 /dev/sda* but I am not able to disable the spindown and can´t find the reason for this "bug". Running Ubuntu 12.04 - Bug is since 12.04 Recent updates are installed, the problem is still recent. I can change the settings via. sudo hdparm -B 127 but if I change hdparm.conf, Ubuntu does not recognize it. /dev/sda { apm_battery=127 }

  I have dell inspiron, previously I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Windows 7 and made it dual boot. But since I want to upgrade my Ubuntu version and change the partition spacing, I deleted 11.10 partition directly and extended my hardrive space (Windows + Ubuntu) at that moment everything was fine. Then I prepared a 12.04 32bit USB and installed it . It was installed but isn't showing dual boot option like 11.10 and my machine directly boot into Windows 7. So instantly i again deleted my 12.04 partition . Now I login into Windows 7 but whenever I put USB ( with 12.04 ) to boot from it, I am facing error of "no such partition grub rescue" even though I try to put lower version(11.04) it showing another error "Error: No default or UI configuration directive found boot " I have reinstall Windows 7 and reformat all partition, still I am facing same error :(

• I/O errors are reported when I try to install Ubuntu, but the SMART data is good. Is my hard disk dying?

  When I try to install linux, it tells me there is an input output error on dev sda. I have tried both Ubuntu and Mint on two different computers. So that narrows it down to the hdd. After hours of googling and trying different things I tried making the hardrive ext4 with gparted but that comes up with an error. This makes me think that the hdd is bad. There are a few reasons I think the hdd isn't bad. I can use the hdd in windows fully. Windows and gparted disk health checks both say it is fine. Its SMART data is all good. So... help?

• Meaning of the free space indication in Deluge

  Recently I installed Ubuntu 12.0.4 using Wubi with my current Windows Vista. I have already installed all the 265 updates from the Ubuntu software center and downloaded Deluge from there. My hardrive is 80GB according to the disc usage analyzer. It also says 31.2 GB used and 47.8GB free. The confusion comes when I run Deluge. At the bottom it says 2.0GB free space. Is that 2.0GB just a size set from the torrent client and can be changed or am I limited to just that 2.0GB?

  I'm new here and would very much appreciate your help I was making a bootable USB to rescue a crashed Ubuntu notebook. I was doing this on my Sony VIo laptop, now I can't access my Sony files, when I boot the Sony up it boots in Ubuntu I think I have overwritten the windows boot sector with Ubuntu I need to either undo the process or if this is not possible then at least recover my kids childhood memory photos Any help to resolve this issue would be very much appreciated P.s I have since removed the hardrive from the Sony and tried to read it on a windows machine as an external drive, windows can see the drive but with no data!

• Issues with HP Mini 110-1125NR

  Just finished installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin on my HP Mini 110-1125NR and im having small, but rather irritating issues. I installed it over the Windows 7 (starter) which came with the netbook. Firstly, it will only boot from the USB flashdisk. If i try to boot from the hardrive, it goes to a black screen. Second, built-in wireless wont activate. system says its enabled and on, but the light indicator is still orange (as if its off), and i cant get a signal from my home wi-fi I havent found any solved threads for inspiration, and mos of them are pretty old (1 year +) so i thought of giving a try to see if any of you guys System is: HP Mini 110-1100 1gb memory Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz x 2 Os - Precise Pangolin - Ubuntu 12.04 160gb Hard disk If any of you are aware of the solutions of my issues it'd be awesome Thanks in advance for any help!

• In setting up dual Boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu, which OS do I install first?

  I'd like to install both Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows XP on a Dell laptop, and I was thinking about using a dual boot structure, and using the bulk of my hard drive as empty hard drive space to share files between the two operating systems (so choice of file system type is very important in this set-up). The kind of partitioning structure I would like to use is Partition 1 - Ubuntu 12.04 (root) (20GB) Partition 2 - Ubuntu /home (20GB) Partition 3 : Free Space (560GB) Partition 4 : Windows XP (35GB) Partition 5 : SWAP (3GB) (Total Hardrive Capacity is ~640GB) My question is; what is the best way to go about setting up this kind this system? Should I install Windows XP first and setup the partitions, and then install Ubuntu which I believe will install the GRUB bootloader for OS booting choice or Do I install Ubuntu first, setting up the available partitions and then perform a WIndows install? Please let me know if there is anything in this setup that I have left out and should know about, including things related to setting particular partitions as logical or primary, and whether the boot partition and the filesystem partition should actually be two separate partitions.

  I'd like a read only file system that runs almost entirely in RAM but the compact flash or hardrive can be mounted and made writeable to make persistent changes. How do I do this on Linux? I've looked at several tutorials but none really explain how to create such a system with the option of being able to mount the storage device and make persistent changes. • Word 2003 Normal.dot template always becoming corrupt.

  I have a user who always seems to have an issue with his normal.dot file becoming corrupt. In the past I've deleted or renamed the normal.dot file, and reopened to create a new one. This seem to fix the problem. Yet, for some strange reason the file doesn't take with this user. I've deleted temp folders, defragged hardrive, and ran a virus scan just to make sure. As a last ditch effort i also reinstalled the app, which did nothing to help. I also checked to make sure he wasn't using the same word file with the same watermark added.

• How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

  Having configured a virtual machine for Ubuntu on VirtualBox on my mac air I need to install Ubuntu OS itself. I have selected the hardrive as the primary boot device and the network as the secondary boot device, so I am not prompted to install an Ubuntu disk at boot time. It attempts to netboot but is unable to locate Ubuntu and cannot find anywhere in the configuration where I can explicitly specify where to find and Ubuntu image, so assume it reverts to some default location and fails. Has anybody out there ever successfully installed ubuntu on virtual box on their Mac Air? What steos did you take to get it right?

  so I wake up this morning and my mother drops the Dell laptop. She starts it up and no desktop icons appear. • What is fastest way to backup a disk image over LAN?

  Sometimes I boot sysrescd or a similar live linux on a PC to backup the hardrive over local network to my server. I noticed many times, that the transfer speed is not optimal (slower than HDD and network speed). Any rules of thumb what to do and what to avoid? What I typically do is something like: dd bs=16M if=/dev/sda | nc ... # on client nc ... | dd bs=16M of=/destination/disk/backup1 # on server I also "throw" in lzop (other are way too slow) and sometimes on the fly md5sum calculation (both of uncompressed and compress source). I try to add (m)buffer (or other alternatives) to improve throughput (and get a progress indicator). I noticed that even with enough free CPU, adding commands to the pipeline slows things down. Typically the destination is on a NTFS volume (accessed via ntfs-3g, with the _big_writes_ option).

  I've found a few posts on this site, however my situation is different. I have a new Dell server with no OS installed. I would like to install Windows 2008 Web Edition. I have a few USB ports and Ethernet. No CD or DVD drives. Is this article the best & only way to proceed? Installing Windows 2008 via USB thumbdrive or should I just get a external hardrive and hook it up to a usb. Once the OS is installed I'll never need a DVD drive again - so that's idea is a waste of money.

  I am trying to install ububtu on an external drive. I am a programmer who wants to start using Linux. I downloaded the usb installer from the ubuntu website and followed all the steps. But when I get to the part where I have to setup the partitioning, it says an error when moving forward "No root file system is defined". I've been doing some research and I think that I have to partition the external drive but do not know how to do so. The problem is that I only want 20gb used from that external drive and let the rest be used for storage. I am also a musician and use Pro tools so I would like to keep all my files there, but I dont want ubuntu on my main hardrive since the external one is portable. I'd appreciate it also if you could provide me the steps.

I have tried several major sites so I know its not the site but some configuration or something I need to do on my end. When I go to the cmd prompt and renew the ip it refers to my wireless nothing about this broadband connection. What do I type/select to get this to go out to the Internet. The broadband is working for my other laptop so I know the connection is not the issue. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

• How do I create an encrypted file system inside a file?

  Recently i've found this interesting tutorial: http://flossstuff.wordpress.com/2011/08/07/using-a-file-as-a-storage-device/ It explains how to create an empty file, format it as ext4, and mount it as a device. I'd like to know if it can be created as an encrypted ext4 file system. I've tried using palimpsest (the disk utility found in System menu) to format the already created file system but it doesn't works as it detects the file system being used. If I try to unmount the file system, it won't work neither because it doesn't detect the device (since it's not a real device like a hardrive or a usb drive). So my question is, is there an option to create the file system encrypted from the begining? I've used these commands: Create an empty file 200Mb size: dd if=/dev/zero of=/path/to/file bs=1M count=200 Make it ext4: mkfs -t ext4 file Mount it in a folder inside my home: sudo mount -o loop file /path/to/mount_point Is there any way the mkfs command creates the ext4 encrypted asking for a decryption password? I'm planing to use this as a way to encrypt files inside Dropbox. Thanks for your time.

  Ok Ive figured out how to do a screen capture of my desktop using Windows Media Encoder 9 + SDK and saving it as a movie on my hardrive. But now I want to take my project further and stream a realtime screen capture of my desktop . The idea is that users accessing my asp.net website will be able to view whatever Im doing on my desktop in real time via the video streaming from my computer. • Need help to install Ubuntu on Win7 Alienware M17xR3, installing not working

  Please I need help to install linux on my computer to start analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (molecular genetics) for my work. I've tried to install from all different ways and forms and it gave me different errors. First I will describe my system: Alienware M17x R3 Raid Drive 596GB (2x 298 GB) Windows7 primary partition C: The hardrive is divided in 3 primary partitions (can't do 4 don't know why) 1st: Fat16 no name capacity 40mbs almost not used (has files like command.com, dellbio.bin, dellrmk.bin and oobedone.flg) I dont know what this is for but is blocked and non system (Status:none). 2nd: Recovery NTFS 9GB (Status:system) and it seems to have boot files. 3rd: CD: Windos OS (status:boot). And I have 2 Logical drivers F: data for backup and games :D (300gb) G: For trying to install the Linux (Already tried with Fat32, Ext2, ext3 and ext4) Installing with Wubi on F: and G: Instalation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode appears: try (HD0,0) non-ms:skip try (HD0,1) NTFS5: No Wibildr try (HD0,2) NTFS5: Error: "Prefix" is not set. Installing with Wubi on C: Installation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode apears: Mount denied becouse NTFS volume is already exclusive opened, the volume may be already mounted or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'FUSER' command Mount devdm-4 Could not find installation files /ubuntu/install custom-installation Run 'Chkdsk /r' on windows and restart...blablablalba... that should correct. done this didn't work. I've read that the boot loader has to be installed on the primary partition, but I'm not sure what I can delete from those 2 partitions that would let me get 1 extra... and it seems that the one that windows use is protected to write down so the software is not touching it... I've got a course tomorrow of how to use the software to analyze the data and I wanted to take my computer with me, so I've passed the last 3 days trying to search different ways to solve. • Recovering from backup without original install media

  A machine from my old job had a complete hard drive failure. I have backups but I'm running into severe problems restoring from them. The only install media was a secondary restore partition on the system's hard drive. I hate whoever came up with that idea more than i can possibly express with words. I spent several days trying to recover the disk - it is pretty well shot and none of my best tricks could even get it to show up in the bios/ The machine that broke is an hp with xp media center edition on it (I don't know why either). The backups were created using the default windows backup tool - I have .bfk file on an external hardrive that i am trying to restore from. I've replaced the hard drive. My home machine is running windows 7 64bit and i'm trying to use it as a platform to restore to the other disk. I downloaded the window 7 nt-restore utility, however no matter what i do it restores to my C drive rather than the specified drive. Fortunately win7 security settings prevented it from being a complete disaster - but still not a happy thing. I tried firing up the xp virtual machine. I can browse to the backups but it says they are invalid and refuse to let me view/ continue with the restore. I tried installing XP to an extra harddrive on my machine - however it bluescreens on me during the install process and I cry. I tried installing xp pro to the new drive and attempted to restore over it, it of course blackscreened on me as that was a stupid idea. I made two partitions on the new hard drive (Apparently the bios on this accursed piece of junk doesn't allow hd partitions larger than 200G anyways and thus fails 40 minutes into the install with an ever-descriptive "Disk Read Error". Guess how i spent last weekend? My last idea was to install xp pro to the second partition and then use it to restore from backup to the first. After the first restart it gives me the error "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware". My brain made one of those bad hard drive clicky noises. I've tried several boot disks but they don't seem to work. If anyone has a link to a good one it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have any more ideas? - I really hate asking on what seems like such a simple issue but i am quite literally at my wit's end.
