• 12.10 Booting Into Variations Of Blank Screen

  I've been running the Ubuntu 12.10 beta since about a month before the final release with almost no problems. However since the day of release (I'm assuming an update has caused this) I have had problems booting into the actual GUI interface. Trying to get it to work is just a case of hard shutting down until it works, but for most of the time I need to battle with various different kinds of black screens. These include a plain black screen, a flashing line and a flashing line that doesn't fit the resolution. Nine times out of ten the cursor will be displayed over these. It also sometimes manages to boot into Ubuntu, albeit text mode or sometimes it loads GRUB which it isn't setup to do. If anyone could help out with this it'd be great. I really, really don't want to have to go through yet another clean installation. Cheers.

• Samba: share home directories when home directories are symbolic links

  I have set up a new Ubuntu 9.10 system for five users. In the system is a large LVM volume where all the data is to be kept. The main system disk is not for this purpose, so I attempted to move the home directories using usermod -d /var/data/username -m And started creating my shares for these new home locations. But then I thought: hey, Samba has built-in home directory sharing! So I enabled that, and it didn't work. The shares were not published to the network. Only the share for user 'owen' was published; his folder hadn't been moved. So I thought: maybe Samba home sharing only works for default home locations, so how about I move the home directories back to where they were, and then make them symlinks. root@boxenmkiv:/home# ls -l total 4 lrwxrwxrwx 1 brett brett 25 2010-04-03 08:48 brett -> /var/data/brett/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 carly carly 23 2010-04-03 08:48 carly -> /var/data/carly/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 dave dave 21 2010-04-03 08:48 dave -> /var/data/dave/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 kate kate 23 2010-04-03 08:47 kate -> /var/data/kate/ drwxr-xr-x 4 owen owen 4096 2010-04-03 08:44 owen Like so. Should I just give up and manually create shares for the users? Thanks in advance.

• GNU screen - Unable to reattach to screen after lost connection

  I was using irssi in screen but lost connection. After I ssh'd back in to the server, I can no longer attach to that screen. screen -ls shows that the screen is already attached. I tried screen -D to force detach it, and it said detach but screen -ls still says it's attached. I tried screen -x and it just hangs there. [sub@server ~]$ screen -ls There are screens on: 4033.poe (Detached) 7728.irssi (Attached) 2 Sockets in /var/run/screen/S-sub. What can I do now?

• How do I install an HP home-use printer on Windows Home Server (Windows Server 2003)

  I have an HP DeskJet F4210 printer that I would like to share on my network via Windows Home Server. Unfortunately, the driver installation checks for supported OS's, detects Home Server as Windows Server 2003 and exits. The driver install supports WinXP, W2k, Vista, and Win98SE. In theory, drivers for XP or Windows 2000 should work fine with Home Server. When using the "Install Printer" tool in Home Server I am only able to select .inf files (there are serveral on the install media) but the driver folders for XP and 2000 have .sys and .dll files. How can I bypass HP's short-sighted install program and get this printer up and running on Home server? I'll be happy with basic print functionality and will save the task of enabling scanning for another time.

  If you’re a Windows Home Server user, there may be times when you need to access it from an Ubuntu machine on your network. Today we take a look at the process of accessing files on your home server from Ubuntu. Note: In this example we’re using Windows Home Server with PowerPack 3, and Ubuntu 10.04 running on a home network. Access WHS from Ubuntu To access files on your home server from Ubuntu, click on Places then select Network. You should now see your home server listed in the Network folder as well as other Windows machines…double-click the server to access it. If you don’t see your server listed, you might need to go into Windows Network \ Workgroup and find it there. You’ll be prompted to enter in the correct credentials for WHS just as you would when accessing it from a Windows machine. It’s your choice if you want to have the password remembered or not…make your selection and click Connect. Now you will see the available folders on your home server. In this example we signed in with Administrator credentials, so we have access to everything. Double-click on the folder share you want to access content from…here we see MS Office documents on the server. Or, here we take a look at a music folder with various MP3 files which you can make Ubuntu play. You can access the files directly from the server, provided there is a Linux app that can handle the file type. In this example we opened a Word document in OpenOffice. Here we’re playing an MKV movie file from the server in Totem Movie Player.   You can easily search for files on the server as well… If you want to store your Ubuntu files on WHS it’s just a matter of dragging them to the correct WHS folder you want them in. If you’re using an Ubuntu computer on your home network and need to access files from Windows Home Server, luckily it’s a straight-forward process. • gnu screen - mouse does not work in nested screen session

  I started a screen session inside another screen session, both on my local machine. This is using cygwin, but I don't think it matters. I have tried via ssh to a real unix machine but the behaviour is the same. Mouse works great in the first screen session, I'm able to open vim with :set mouse=a and I can click to move the cursor or switch tabs, and the mouse wheel scrolls. But in the nested session it does not work, mouse is only useful for selecting terminal text that gets put in the clipboard, but is not able to interact with vim. I want this to work because I usually work with a local screen session, then ssh to a remote server and have a remote screen session running too (hence the nesting) and I like to scroll swiftly in vim by using the mouse wheel. Can anyone tell me why the mouse works in the first layer of screen but not in the second, nested screen session, and how I can make it work? Thanks in advance, Matthew

• Move a screen session back to its original PID

  Installed McMyAdmin (minecraft manager) on Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit. Wrote my own service to start McMyAdmin (.net app running in Mono) in its own screen session, and be able to inject proper McMyAdmin commands into that session with the init.d script. Its been running great! Today, I decided to start installing a Source dedicated server (counterstrike pro mod) I determine its going to be a long download process so I quit the process and fire up a fresh screen session called "source". I paste the command in, but it has a space at the begining and bash complains of ignoring semaphores or some such. I detach and reattach the session. Its sliding like butter. I ctrl+a-d out of the session and start exploring the new folder structure and figure out where I need to place a symbolic link. I go to resume that screen and this is what I see: $screen -r source There are several suitable screens on 20091.source (12/02/12 22:59:53) (Detached) 19972.source (12/02/12 22:57:31) (Detached) 917.minecraft (11/30/12 15:30:37) (Attached) It appears I am connected to the minecraft screen?!?!?! So I attach to the other screens one at a time. minecraft is running in 19972.source and sourceds is running in 20091.source So how the hell did I move the minecraft process to another session called source and my main terminal is now "attached" to the minecraft screen? more: I just used exit to quit the putty session, then logged back in, its still the same. did that 3 more times and now the minecraft screen is gone and everything is acting as it should except, of course, for the session name and start time of the "new" minecraft screen. Should I just submit this as a bug for GNU screen?

Today we show you the steps to enable Remote Access to your home server from anywhere you have an Internet connection. Remote Access in Windows Home Server has a lot of great features like uploading and downloading files from shared folders, accessing files from machines on your network, and controling machines remotely (on supported OS versions). Here we take a look at the basics of setting it up, choosing a domain name, and verifying you can connect remotely. Setup Remote Access in Windows Home Server Open the Windows Home Server Console and click on Settings. Next select Remote Access, it is off by default, just click the button to turn it on. Wait while your router is configured for remote access, when it’s complete click Next. Notice that it will enable UPnP, if you don’t wish to have that enabled, you can manually forward the correct ports. If you have any problems with the router being automatically configured, we’ll be taking a look at a more detailed troubleshooting guide in the future. The router is successfully configured, and we can continue to the next process of configuring our domain name. The Domain Name Setup Wizard will start. Notice you will need a Windows Live ID to set it up –which is typically your hotmail address. If you don’t already have one, you can get one here. Type in your Live ID email address and password and click Next… Agree to the Home Server Privacy Statement and the Live Custom Domains Addendum. If you’re concerned about privacy and want to learn more about the domain addendum, make sure to read about it before agreeing. There is nothing abnormal to point out about either statement, but if this is your first time setting it up, it’s good to review the information.   Now choose a name for the domain. You should select something that is easy to remember and identifies your home server. The name can contain up to 63 characters, numbers, letters, and hyphens…and must begin and end with a letter or number. When you have the name figured out click the Confirm button. Note: You can only register one domain name per Live ID. If the name isn’t already taken, you’ll get a confirmation message indicating it’s god to go. The wizard is complete and you can now access the home server from the URL provided. A few other things to point out after you’ve set it up…under Domain Name click on the Details button… Which pulls up the domain detail information and you can refresh the data to verify everything is working correctly. Or you can click the Configure button and then change or release your current domain name. Under Web site settings, you can change you site page headline to whatever you want it to be. Accessing Home Server Remotely After you’ve gotten everything setup for your home server domain, you can begin to access it when you’re away from home. Simply type in the domain address you created in the previous steps. The start page is rather boring…and to start accessing your data, click the Log On button in the upper right hand corner. Then enter in your home server credentials to gain access to your files, folders, and network computers. You won’t be able to log in with your administrator user account however, to protect security of your network. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to access different parts of your home server shares and network computers. Conclusion Now that you have Remote Access setup, you should be able to access and manage your files easily. Being able to access data from your home server remotely is great when you need to get certain files while on the road. The web UI is pretty self explanatory, works best in IE as ActiveX is required, and is smooth and easy to work with. • Laptop screen is cracked, external monitor only mirroring the broken laptop screen

  I did something stupid. When my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop screen cracked and went all crazy and I couldn't see anything, I attached it to an external monitor and pressed Fn + F5 and it worked. But then I did something in the control panel that made the external screen look similar to the laptop screen. That made the external screen completely unusable too. In the control panel it was the last tab – something with "dual screens" I think. Is there anyway to reverse what did, turn off the laptop screen permanently and turn the external monitor into the primary? Remember that I can't see anything on the laptop screen. It is a complete goner – and because of what I did I can't see anything on the external monitor.

• Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

  I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop? • Restore Files from Backups on Windows Home Server

  If you use Windows Home Server to backup the machines on your network, your in luck if you accidentally delete important files or they become corrupted. Today we take a look at getting your data back from backups on your home server. Open Windows Home Server Console and click select the Computers and Backup tab. Right-click on the computer you need to restore files for and select View Backups. This will open a list of your recent backups. Highlight the one you want to open, then click the Open button in the Restore or View Files section. If this is the first time you’re restoring a file, you’ll be asked to verify installation of the device software. Check the box next to Always trust software from Microsoft Corporation and click Install. Now wait while the backup data is retrieved. After the backup data has been retrieved, an explorer windows opens up to drive (Z:) which is the backup data. It’s just like if you were opening a drive on your local machine. Now you can browse through the backup and find the files your missing. You can open the files directly, or drag them onto your machine to the location you want to restore them.   Restoring your data is actually a very easy process with Windows Home Server.   I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 12.10. • Mecer laptop gives me a white screen when I close the screen

  I'm having a very strange hardware issue with my Mecer m770u laptop with intel i7 quad core, etc... I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue with any other brand/model of laptop, and what I should fix/replace to solve it...? Basically when I close the screen of the laptop, the screen often goes completely white. If I open it slowly and smoothly again, the screen returns to normal. But if I close the screen when the computer is off, and then switch it on, it boots with a white screen, and opening it slowly/smoothly doesn't help. I have to then switch it on and off a few times before it returns to normal. Makes travelling with my laptop really difficult! Any suggestions?

• Using screen, commands like less and man don't clear the screen afterwards

  In contrast to this question I want the clearing of the screen re-enabled for less. It works fine in my xterm terminal under Cygwin/mintty or Gnome Terminal (both xterms). However, when inside a screen session, the clearing of the screen is somehow disabled. I tried several things, like screen -T xterm or putting the autonuke statement in my ~/.screenrc. Also, inside the screen session export TERM=xterm tset has no effect. So, now I'm out of ideas. Any help appreciated.

• GNU Screen: Combining split-regions and full-screen sessions

  Let's say I have three sessions: 0, 1 and 2 I'm on session 0 and I press CTRL-A S to split the screen. Then I select session 1 for the bottom split region, while 0 is in the upper. Can I switch to session 2 and have it display in full-screen while 0 and 1 remain split? If I CTRL-A n to other sessions in a split screen it only changes the split-region. I want some sessions to be full-screen though. Is that possible?

Is there a separate command line interface for Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture or do I have to use the command line interface for Expression Studio? • Addin Central Windows Home Server

  If you’re a Windows Home Server user, you’ve probably come across a lot of cool addins that you can use to enhance its functionality. Today we take a look at Addin Central… which gives you easy access to the many addin possibilities out there. Addin Central from HomeServerLand is a free well…addin…that brings you information and easy access to several other addins that are available for your Windows Home Server. It essentially creates an “app store” of sorts for your Windows Home Server that you can view in the console. Install Addin Central Browse to your shared folders on the server and open the Add-Ins folder and copy the AddinCentral.msi installer (link below). Next open WHS Console from one of the computers connected to your network, and click Settings then Add-ins. Under Available Add-ins click the Available tab and you’ll see the Addin Central installer file we just copied over. Click the Install button. Installation kicks off and when it’s complete, you’ll need to close out of the console and reconnect. Using Addin Central When you reconnect to WHS Console, you’ll see Addin Central in the menu with a list of the newest updated addins. The toolbox gives you different options for controlling Addin Central, and notice you can easily search for addins too. In the Addin Central Toolbox you can change settings such as the startup view, showing tooltips, and more.   Conclusion If you’re a Windows Home Server user, you’ll definitely want to give Addin Central a go. It lets you easily find and download various addins for essentially anything you might want to use to customize your home server.   One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it. • Unable to get screen signal after purge FGLRX

  I thought that my ATI driver was not running well so I wanted to re-instal it completely. I did: sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon and after a boot I wanted to intal the ATI driver BUT at the boot no more signal to my screen. Since, every time I turn on my PC it gets to purple screen and then screen shuts down ! Note that: Even if the screen is off, PC seems to be running almost well: I m still able to use my network to access data shared with NFS. Using live USB I have no screen problem. I tried to plug my screen on an alternative output but it did not work. I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 while being on purple screen but it does not do anything, screen shut down anyway. I m going to try the SHIFT thing and learn from blackscreen wiki...
