  • Seperating entities from their actions or behaviours

    - by Jamie Dixon
Hi everyone, I'm having a go at creating a very simple text based game and am wondering what the standard design patterns are when it comes to entities (characters, sentient scenery) and the actions those entities can perform. As an example, I have entity that is a 'person' with various properties such as age, gender, height, etc. This 'person' can also perform some actions such as speaking, walking, jumping, flying, etc etc. How would you seperate out the entity from the actions it can perform and what are some common design patterns that solve this kind of problem?

  • Flixel Game Over Screen

    - by Jamie Read
    I am new to game development but familiar with programming languages. I have started using Flixel and have a working Breakout game with score and lives. I am just stuck on how I can create a new screen/game over screen if a player runs out of lives. I would like the process to be like following: Check IF lives are equal to 0 Pause the game and display a new screen (probably transparent) that says 'Game Over' When a user clicks or hits ENTER restart the level Here is the function I currently have to update the lives: private function loseLive(_ball:FlxObject, _bottomWall:FlxObject):void { // check for game over if (lives_count == 0) { } else { FlxG:lives_count -= 1; lives.text = 'Lives: ' + lives_count.toString() } } Here is my main game.as: package { import org.flixel.*; public class Game extends FlxGame { private const resolution:FlxPoint = new FlxPoint(640, 480); private const zoom:uint = 2; private const fps:uint = 60; public function Game() { super(resolution.x / zoom, resolution.y / zoom, PlayState, zoom); FlxG.flashFramerate = fps; } } }

  • Student wanting to go to a developer conference

    - by Jamie Keeling
I'm a 21 year old student in my last year of University, and I am looking for information about developer conferences. I live in Derby (United Kingdom) and there's not (As far as I know) many conferences local to where I live. I do have a car at my disposal so travelling shouldn't be a problem. I was hoping somebody could recommend the best way to go about finding and attending a conference, which one is probably the best to go to and what kind of things I'd need to know and take beforehand. I've done a couple of Google searches and searched SO itself but nothing specific to my needs was found. Note: I'm primarily a C# developer using WPF and WinForms but I'm open to pretty much anything.

  • Low hanging fruit where "a sufficiently smart compiler" is needed to get us back to Moore's Law?

    - by jamie
Paul Graham argues that: It would be great if a startup could give us something of the old Moore's Law back, by writing software that could make a large number of CPUs look to the developer like one very fast CPU. ... The most ambitious is to try to do it automatically: to write a compiler that will parallelize our code for us. There's a name for this compiler, the sufficiently smart compiler, and it is a byword for impossibility. But is it really impossible? Can someone provide a concrete example where a paralellizing compiler would solve a pain point? Web-apps don't appear to be a problem: just run a bunch of Node processes. Real-time raytracing isn't a problem: the programmers are writing multi-threaded, SIMD assembly language quite happily (indeed, some might complain if we make it easier!). The holy grail is to be able to accelerate any program, be it MySQL, Garage Band, or Quicken. I'm looking for a middle ground: is there a real-world problem that you have experienced where a "smart-enough" compiler would have provided a real benefit, i.e that someone would pay for?

  • mpd conflicting with other applications -- taking control of pulse?

    - by Jamie Schembri
Simple explanation If mpd is playing and sound attempts to play through another application, x, sound from x will not be output. If sound from another application, x, is playing and mpd then attempts to play, no sound will be output from mpd whilst sound from x continues to play. Details I first noticed this problem with Flash, and this continues to be the most common scenario. I posted a question about this before realising it was not strictly Flash-related, but instead is something to do with mpd. My biggest frustration comes from trying to get mpd working again, as I can't seem to pin down any method. Sometimes pulseaudio -k seems to help, other times sudo /etc/init.d/mpd restart, others killing Chromium (due to Flash) with SIGTERM. Most of the time it's a combination of the above. I think this might be because I run mpd as another user and use pulseaudio. It is not run as root or current user. Also, mpd is compiled with pulse support. I have tried numerous things, however I honestly couldn't recite what, as it has been some time since. I'd rather not go poking around without some direction, but I'd be really happy to fix this problem once and for all. mpd.conf Simplified by removing comments/blank lines. music_directory "/var/lib/mpd/music" playlist_directory "/var/lib/mpd/playlists" db_file "/var/lib/mpd/tag_cache" log_file "/var/log/mpd/mpd.log" pid_file "/var/run/mpd/pid" state_file "/var/lib/mpd/state" user "mpd" bind_to_address "wilson" input { plugin "curl" } audio_output { type "pulse" name "My Pulse Output" } filesystem_charset "UTF-8" id3v1_encoding "UTF-8" Question For the sake of keeping this a question: does anyone know what is causing this, or how to fix it?

  • Extending an ABCS

    - by jamie.phelps
All AIA Application Business Connector Services (ABCS) are extension enabled out of the box. The number and location of extension points in each ABCS is dependent upon whether the ABCS is a request-response or fire-and-forget service. Below is an example of a request-reply ABCS with 4 extension call-out points: Pre-transformationPost-transformation, Pre-invokePost-invoke, Pre-transformationPost-transformation, Pre-reply You can also see in the diagram that each XSL Transformation has it's own extension call-out. However for now we are only discussing the ABCS extension call-outs. To extend an ABCS, you'll first need to identify the specific extension points that are available in your ABCS and choose the one or more that you want to implement. You can an get an idea of the extension points available in your ABCS by looking into the AIAConfigurationProperties.xml file found under the AIA_HOME/config directory. Find the for your ABCS and look for properties similar to the following: false false false false Each extension point in the ABCS will have a corresponding configuration property to control whether or not the extension call-out is active at runtime. So these properties can give you some idea of what extension points are available in your ABCS. However, you'll probably also want to look into the ABCS BPEL code itself to confirm the exact location of the call-out.

  • Creating user UI using Flixel

    - by Jamie Read
I am new to game development but familiar with programming languages. I have started using Flixel and have a working Breakout game with score and lives. What I am trying to do is add a Start Screen before actually loading the game. I have a create function that adds all the game elements to the stage: override public function create():void // all game elements { How can I add this pre-load Start Screen? I'm not sure if I have to add in the code to this create function or somewhere else and what code to actually add. Eventually I would also like to add saving, loading, options and upgrades too. So any advice with that would be great. Here is my main game.as: package { import org.flixel.*; public class Game extends FlxGame { private const resolution:FlxPoint = new FlxPoint(640, 480); private const zoom:uint = 2; private const fps:uint = 60; public function Game() { super(resolution.x / zoom, resolution.y / zoom, PlayState, zoom); FlxG.flashFramerate = fps; } } } Thanks.

  • My Ubuntu drive is running out of space, how to fix, something is wrong

    - by Jamie Flores
I'm moving from windows and am having trouble figuring this out: I'm getting a message that pops up saying disk space is low. It says I have 800MB free. I click on the disk usage analyzer and it shows 24.6 total capacity and 22.5 used. When I look in GParted it shows a partition at 72.6GB where I have Ubuntu installed. It also shows that 70.65GB used and 1.94 free in that partition. How do I figure out what else is in that partition? It's the only ext4 format. What am I missing?

  • Are there any concrete examples of where a paralellizing compiler would provide a value-adding benefit?

I'm looking for a middle ground: is there a real-world problem that you have experienced where a "smart-enough" compiler would have provided a real benefit, i.e that someone would pay for? A good answer is one where there is a process where the computer runs at 100% CPU on a single core for a painful period of time. That time might be 10 seconds, if the task is meant to be quick. It might be 500ms if the task is meant to be interactive. It might be 10 hours. Please describe such a problem. Really, that's all I'm looking for: candidate areas for further investigation. (Hence, raytracing is off the list because all the low-hanging fruit have been feasted upon.) I am not interested in why it cannot be done. There are a million people willing to point to the sound reasons why it cannot be done. Such answers are not useful.

  • Legality of similar games

    - by Jamie Taylor
This is my first question on GD.SE, and I hope it's in the right place. A little background: I'm an amateur (read: not explicitly employed to develop games, but am employed as a software developer) game developer and took a ComSci with Games Development degree. My Question: What is the legal situation/standpoint of creating a copycat title? I know that there are only N number of ways of solving a problem, and N number of ways to design a piece of software. Say that an independent developer designed a copycat game (a Tetris clone in this example) for instance, and decided to use that game to generate income for themselves as well as interest for their other products. Say the developer adds a disclaimer into the software along the lines of "based on , originally released c. by ." Are there any legal problems/grey areas with the developer in this example releasing this game, commercially? Would they run into legal problems? Should the developer in this example expect cease and desist orders or law suit claims from original publishers? Have original publishers been known to, effectively, kill independent projects because they are a little too close to older titles? I know that there was, at least, one attempt by a group of independent developers to remake Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sega shut them down. I also know of Sega shutting down development of the independent Streets of Rage Remake. I know that "but it's an old game, your honour," isn't a great legal standpoint when it comes to defending yourself. But, could an independent developer have a law suit filed against them for re-implementing an older title in a new way? I know that there are a lot of copycat versions of the older titles like Tetris available on app stores (and similar services), and that it would be very difficult for a major publisher to shut them all down. Regardless of this, is making a Tetris (or other game) copycat/clone illegal? We were taught lots of different things at University, but we never covered copyright law. I'm presuming that their thought behind it was "IF these students get jobs in games development, they wont need to know anything about the legal side of it, because their employers will have legal departments... presumably" tl;dr Is it illegal to create a clone or copycat of an old title, and make money from it?

  • Implicit OAuth2 endpoint vs. cookies

    - by Jamie
I currently have an app which basically runs two halves of an API - a restful API for the web app, and a synchronisation API for the native clients (all over SSL). The web app is completely javascript based and is quite similar to the native clients anyway - except it currently does not work offline. What I'm hoping to do is merge the fragmented APIs into a single restful API. The web app currently authenticates by issuing a cookie to the client whereas the native clients work using a custom HMAC access token implementation. Obviously a public/private key scenario for a javascript app is a little pointless. I think the best solution would be to create an OAuth2 endpoint on the API (like Instagram, for example http://instagram.com/developer/authentication/) which is used by both the native apps and the web app. My question is, in terms of security how does an implicit OAuth2 flow compare (storing the access token in local storage) to "secure" cookies? Presumably although SSL solves man in the middle attacks, the user could theoretically grab the access token from local storage and copy it to another machine?

  • How to create a copy of an instance without having access to private variables

    - by Jamie
Im having a bit of a problem. Let me show you the code first: public class Direction { private CircularList xSpeed, zSpeed; private int[] dirSquare = {-1, 0, 1, 0}; public Direction(int xSpeed, int zSpeed){ this.xSpeed = new CircularList(dirSquare, xSpeed); this.zSpeed = new CircularList(dirSquare, zSpeed); } public Direction(Point dirs){ this(dirs.x, dirs.y); } public void shiftLeft(){ xSpeed.shiftLeft(); zSpeed.shiftRight(); } public void shiftRight(){ xSpeed.shiftRight(); zSpeed.shiftLeft(); } public int getXSpeed(){ return this.xSpeed.currentValue(); } public int getZSpeed(){ return this.zSpeed.currentValue(); } } Now lets say i have an instance of Direction: Direction dir = new Direction(0, 0); As you can see in the code of Direction, the arguments fed to the constructor, are passed directly to some other class. One cannot be sure if they stay the same because methods shiftRight() and shiftLeft could have been called, which changes thos numbers. My question is, how do i create a completely new instance of Direction, that is basically copy(not by reference) of dir? The only way i see it, is to create public methods in both CircularList(i can post the code of this class, but its not relevant) and Direction that return the variables needed to create a copy of the instance, but this solution seems really dirty since those numbers are not supposed to be touched after beeing fed to the constructor, and therefore they are private.

  • How to use driver for printer?

    - by jamie
I've been trying to get my Lexmark x1290 to work on Ubuntu 12.04. According to this post, the z600 driver should work to print, so I downloaded the z600 driver from here and installed it through the Ubuntu Software Center. I plugged in my printer and went to the "Printer" section under System Settings... and followed the wizard to install it. It showed up as "1200-series" but never gave me a choice to choose the driver and when I try to print to it, it pops up a message that it is printing and then that it is done printing, but it is definitely not printing anything. What am I doing wrong here?

  • Ubuntu not booting from USB on laptop (no optical drive)

    - by Jamie
I'm using a Kingston 16GB USB, with the Unetbootin program. (I've tried both downloading the installation iso manually and adding it, or using the program to download.) I've tried creating the bootable USB on an iMac, the laptop and also a desktop. I've booted into the setup of the laptop and changed the boot order to make sure it boots from that drive first. (There is no optical drive so that isn't a problem.) It's an Acer Aspire AS3810TZ. Upon booting it gives this message: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al I get this no matter how I create the USB, it just sits there. I left the laptop for an hour and it hadn't moved. I've also tried on a different 4GB USB (Generic) and that did the same.

  • What are they buying &ndash; work or value?

    - by Jamie Kurtz
When was the last time you ordered a pizza like this: “I want the high school kid in the back to do the following… make a big circle with some dough, curl up the edges, then put some sauce on it using a small ladle, then I want him to take a handful of shredded cheese from the metal container and spread it over the circle and sauce, then finally I want the kid to place 36 pieces of pepperoni over the top of the cheese” ?? Probably never. My typical pizza order usually goes more like this: “I want a large pepperoni pizza”. In the world of software development, we try so hard to be all things agile. We: Write lots of unit tests We refactor our code, then refactor it some more We avoid writing lengthy requirements documents We try to keep processes to a minimum, and give developers freedom And we are proud of our constantly shifting focus (i.e. we’re “responding to change”) Yet, after all this, we fail to really lean and capitalize on one of agile’s main differentiators (from the twelve principles behind the Agile Manifesto): “Working software is the primary measure of progress.” That is, we foolishly commit to delivering tasks instead of features and bug fixes. Like my pizza example above, we fall into the trap of signing contracts that bind us to doing tasks – rather than delivering working software. And the biggest problem here… by far the most troubling outcome… is that we don’t let working software be a major force in all the work we do. When teams manage to ruthlessly focus on the end product, it puts them on the path of true agile. It doesn’t let them accidentally write too much documentation, or spend lots of time and money on processes and fancy tools. It forces early testing that reveals problems in the feature or bug fix. And it forces lots and lots of customer interaction.  Without that focus on the end product as your deliverable… by committing to a list of tasks instead of a list features and bug fixes… you are doomed to NOT be agile. You will end up just doing stuff, spending time on the keyboard, burning time on timesheets. Doing tasks doesn’t force you to minimize documentation. It makes it much harder to respond to change. And it will eventually force you and the client into contract haggling. Because the customer isn’t really paying you to do stuff. He’s ultimately paying for features and bug fixes. And when the customer doesn’t get what they want, responding with “well, look at the contract - we did all the tasks we committed to” doesn’t typically generate referrals or callbacks. In short, if you’re trying to deliver real value to the customer by going agile, you will most certainly fail if all you commit to is a list of things you’re going to do. Give agile what it needs by committing to features and bug fixes – not a list of ToDo items. So the next time you are writing up a contract, remember that the customer should be buying this: Not this:

I plan to go to tafe sometime next year to get my diploma but want to start myself. instead of learning asp.net as a whole and all the languages involved such as c#, html css and javascript etc etc. I'm starting to think a solid understanding of at lest one of these might be beneficial I have "Beginning C# Object-Oriented Programming - Clark - Apress, is it worth learning about the languages before I go head first into a ide?.

  • What caused you to stop using UML tools on your team?

    - by jamie
There seems to be plenty of good, free UML tools. I hear about UML tools being used by large organizations, and they seem to have plenty of advocates. However, in my career I have never seen them used beyond "dabbling". Now, I have seen many UML diagrams drawn on whiteboards, and I use them myself all the time, on paper, to think about problems. I've also seen articles such as this one claiming why developers don't use UML, but the arguments just don't land with me. Frankly, this seems like an opportunity for a start-up if one can figure out why developers really don't use them, and solve those problems. So I'm asking anyone here who has attempted to use UML tools in a team, and stopped, this question: "why did you stop?" I'm especially interested in experience from agile teams. I am looking for concrete experience, not hypothetical opinion. Thanks.

  • How to implement a multi-part snake with smooth movement? [closed]

    - by Jamie
Sorry that i couldnt answer on my previous post but it got closed. I couldnt answer because i had to prepair for my finals. As there were problems with understanding of what im trying to achieve, im going to describe a little bit more in depth. Im creating a game in which you steer a snake. I assume everybody knows how that works. But in my case the snake isnt just propagating in an array element by element. Imagine a 2Dgrid on which the snake moves. Its 10x10 tiles. Lets say one tile is 4x4 meters. The snakes head spawns in the middle of the (3,2) tile (beginning with (0,0)), so its position is (4*3+2,4*2+2)(the 2's are so that the snake is in the middle of the 4x4 tile). And heres where the fun begins. when the snake moves, it doesnt jump to next tile. Instead it moves a fraction of the way there. So lets say the snake is heading to tile (4,2). After it moved once, its position is (4*3+2+0.1,4*2+2), where 0.1 is the fraction of the way it moved. This is done to achieve smooth movement. So now im adding the rest of the body. The rest is supposed to move along the exact same path as the head did. I implemented it so that each part of the body has its own position and direction. Then i apply this algorithm: 1.Move each part in its direction. 2.If a part is in the middle of the tile(which implies all of them are), change each parts direction to the direction of the part proceeding it. As i said before i could make this work, but i cant stop thinking that im overlooking a much easier and cleaner solution. So this is my question. Is there any easier/better/faster way to do this?

  • puppet rspec no such file to load -- rspec-puppet (LoadError)

    - by Vorsprung
I have no prior experience at all of ruby. I am not interested in ruby (and so have no knowledge of rails etc) as such but am using puppet to manage a group of servers. I have written some modules and the rspec-puppet system looks like it would be very useful. However, I cannot get rspec-puppet to work I am using Ubuntu LTS 10.04 I have installed puppet rspec using the directions on their web page What I actually did apt-get install rubygems # (installs 1.8) gem install rspec-expectations gem install rspec-puppet I also installed librspec-ruby1.8 Then I ran rspec-puppet-init in a puppet module directory I'd already made (it's a working puppet module) I made a file as defined in the tutorial $ more spec/defines/rule_spec.rb require 'spec_helper' describe 'vanusers::rule' do let(:title) { 't1' } it { should contain_class('vanusers::JamieA') } end but when I try and run it there is a mysterious dependancy issue $ spec spec/defines/rule_spec.rb /home/jamie/git/puppet/modules/vanusers/spec/spec_helper.rb:1:in `require': no such file to load -- rspec-puppet (LoadError) from /home/jamie/git/puppet/modules/vanusers/spec/spec_helper.rb:1 from ./spec/defines/rule_spec.rb:1:in `require' from ./spec/defines/rule_spec.rb:1 from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/spec/runner/example_group_runner.rb:15:in `load' from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/spec/runner/example_group_runner.rb:15:in `load_files' from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/spec/runner/example_group_runner.rb:14:in `each' from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/spec/runner/example_group_runner.rb:14:in `load_files' from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/spec/runner/options.rb:132:in `run_examples' from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/spec/runner/command_line.rb:9:in `run' from /usr/bin/spec:3 Here is the solution I came up with in the end:: apt-get install rubygems gem install rspec-expectations rspec-puppet puppet-lint puppetlabs_spec_helper so your path picks up the gem stuff export PATH=/var/lib/gems/1.8/bin:$PATH cd into module and rm spec/spec_helper.rb rspec-puppet-init replace Rakefile with require 'rake' require 'rspec/core/rake_task' require 'puppetlabs_spec_helper/rake_tasks' Then "rake spec" to run tests or "rake lint" to check files http://sysadvent.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/day-22-getting-started-testing-your.html was an excellent source of info

The webservice in question is based on the PHP SOAP extension and is descibed by the following WSDL: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <definitions name="MyServices" targetNamespace="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services" xmlns:tns="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services" xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsd1="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services" xmlns:soapenc="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" xmlns:wsdl="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/" xmlns="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/"> <types> <schema targetNamespace="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <complexType name="ServiceType"> <all> <element name="id" type="xsd:int" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" /> <element name="name" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" /> <element name="cost" type="xsd:float" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" /> </all> </complexType> <complexType name="ArrayOfServiceType"> <all> <element name="Services" type="ServiceType" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" /> </all> </complexType> </schema> </types> <message name="getServicesRequest"> <part name="postcode" type="xsd:string" /> </message> <message name="getServicesResponse"> <part name="Result" type="xsd1:ArrayOfServiceType"/> </message> <portType name="ServicesPortType"> <operation name="getServices"> <input message="tns:getServicesRequest"/> <output message="tns:getServicesResponse"/> </operation> </portType> <binding name="ServicesBinding" type="tns:ServicesPortType"> <soap:binding style="document" transport="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/http"/> <operation name="getServices"> <soap:operation soapAction="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services/getServices" /> <input> <soap:body use="encoded" namespace="urn:my:services" encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" /> </input> <output> <soap:body use="encoded" namespace="urn:my:services" encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" /> </output> </operation> </binding> <service name="MyServices"> <port name="ServicesPort" binding="tns:ServicesBinding"> <soap:address location="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services"/> </port> </service> </definitions> I can successfully generate a proxy class from this WSDL in Visual Studio, but upon trying to invoke the getServices method I am presented with an exception: System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHeaderException: Procedure 'string' not present After inspecting the raw post data at the SOAP server end, my PHP SOAP client is making requests like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:SOAP-ENC="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" SOAP-ENV:encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"> <SOAP-ENV:Body> <postcode xsi:type="xsd:string">ln4 4nq</postcode> </SOAP-ENV:Body> </SOAP-ENV:Envelope> Whereas the .Net proxy class is doing this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:soapenc="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" xmlns:tns="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services" xmlns:types="http://mydomain.com/api/soap/v11/services/encodedTypes" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <soap:Body soap:encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"> <xsd:string xsi:type="xsd:string">LN4 4NQ</xsd:string> </soap:Body> </soap:Envelope> I can only assume the difference in the way the postcode parameter is being sent is where the problem lies, but as primarily a PHP developer I'm at a loss as to what's occuring here. I have a feeling I'm simply missing something vital in my WSDL as I've seen countless examples of 'Consuming PHP SOAP WebServices with .Net' which appear to suggest that it 'just works'. Any suggestion as to where i've slipped up here would be greatly appreciated. I've currently spent almost an entire day on this now ;-) Thanks in advance, Jamie

  • undefined reference to function, despite giving reference in c

    - by Jamie Edwards
I'm following a tutorial, but when it comes to compiling and linking the code I get the following error: /tmp/cc8gRrVZ.o: In function `main': main.c:(.text+0xa): undefined reference to `monitor_clear' main.c:(.text+0x16): undefined reference to `monitor_write' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [obj/main.o] Error 1 What that is telling me is that I haven't defined both 'monitor_clear' and 'monitor_write'. But I have, in both the header and source files. They are as follows: monitor.c: // monitor.c -- Defines functions for writing to the monitor. // heavily based on Bran's kernel development tutorials, // but rewritten for JamesM's kernel tutorials. #include "monitor.h" // The VGA framebuffer starts at 0xB8000. u16int *video_memory = (u16int *)0xB8000; // Stores the cursor position. u8int cursor_x = 0; u8int cursor_y = 0; // Updates the hardware cursor. static void move_cursor() { // The screen is 80 characters wide... u16int cursorLocation = cursor_y * 80 + cursor_x; outb(0x3D4, 14); // Tell the VGA board we are setting the high cursor byte. outb(0x3D5, cursorLocation >> 8); // Send the high cursor byte. outb(0x3D4, 15); // Tell the VGA board we are setting the low cursor byte. outb(0x3D5, cursorLocation); // Send the low cursor byte. } // Scrolls the text on the screen up by one line. static void scroll() { // Get a space character with the default colour attributes. u8int attributeByte = (0 /*black*/ << 4) | (15 /*white*/ & 0x0F); u16int blank = 0x20 /* space */ | (attributeByte << 8); // Row 25 is the end, this means we need to scroll up if(cursor_y >= 25) { // Move the current text chunk that makes up the screen // back in the buffer by a line int i; for (i = 0*80; i < 24*80; i++) { video_memory[i] = video_memory[i+80]; } // The last line should now be blank. • Does anybody know of existing code to read a mork file (Thunderbird Address Book)?

    - by bruceatk
I have the need to read the Thunderbird address book on the fly. It is stored in a file format called Mork. Not a pleasant file format to read. I found a 1999 article explaining the file format. I would love to know if someone already has gone through this process and could make the code available. I found mork.pl by Jamie Zawinski (he worked on Netscape Navigator), but I was hoping for a .NET solution. I'm hoping StackOverflow will come to the rescue, because this just seems like a waste of my time to write something to read this file format when it should be so simple. I love the comments that Jamie put in his perl script. Here is my favorite part: # Let me make it clear that McCusker is a complete barking lunatic. # This is just about the stupidest file format I've ever seen.

  • What does the BIOS setting XHCI Pre-Boot Mode do?

    - by Jamie Kitson
I have a BIOS setting called XHCI Pre-Boot Mode. If I have this enabled USB devices which aren't plugged in at boot are never recognised, if I set it to Disabled then USB devices work normally. The brief BIOS description says "Enable this option if you need USB3.0 support in DOS." Which I don't, but it also says "Please note that XHCI controller will be disabled if you set this item as Disabled." So does that mean that USB3 is disabled with this option? Here's a picture of the screen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamiekitson/8017563004/

  • Dovecot install: what does this error mean?

    - by jamie
I have postfix and dovecot installed on CentOS 6 (linode) along with MySQL. The table and user is already set up, postfix installed fine, but dovecot gives me this error in the mail log: Warning: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=9415 uid=0 code=kill) The next few lines say this: Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: master: Dovecot v2.0.9 starting up (core dumps disabled) Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: NOTE: You can get a new clean config file with: doveconf -n > dovecot-new.conf Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:1: protocols=pop3s is no longer supported. to disable non-ssl pop3, use service pop3-login { inet_listener pop3 { p$ Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:5: ssl_cert_file has been replaced by ssl_cert = <file Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:6: ssl_key_file has been replaced by ssl_key = <file Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:8: namespace private {} has been replaced by namespace { type=private } Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:24: add auth_ prefix to all settings inside auth {} and remove the auth {} section completely Apr 7 16:13:35 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:25: auth_user has been replaced by service auth { user } I am following directions for the install on CentOS 5 with changes in the dovecot.conf file from different sources specific to CentOS 6. So the dovecot.conf file might not be correct, but there is no good source I have found yet for making dovecot install correctly. Can anyone tell me what the error above means? The terminal does not give any message as to start OK or FAIL. When I issue the service dovecot start command, it says: Starting Dovecot Imap: and nothing more.
