• convert multiple segments of DVD to FLV

  I have a DVD of footage that I need to convert to FLV. I would rather not convert the whole disk as I only need specific segments. Is there a program that I can input start and end times and to get multiple files of these segments? Can you also advise on the best settings to use for best quality at the smallest file sizes. • Capture traffic from SPAN and send it to a HyperV VM

  On a Server 2008 SP2 HyperV VM, I am trying to capture traffic from a SPAN. I know the SPAN is working, as I am able to capture the traffic on the Host OS, but when I try and capture traffic on the VM, with the SPAN being sent to a virtual adapter, I cannot seem to get it to work-- After doing some Googling, I have found that it might be because HyperV NICs cannot be put into promiscuous mode. (?) Any other thoughts? -Josh

• Displaying XML in Chrome Browser

  I love the Chrome browser but I use XML quite a lot in my development work and when I view it in Chrome I just get the rendered text. I know that the source view is slightly better but I'd really like to see the layout and functionality that IE adds to XML namely: Highlighting Open/close nodes Any ideas how I can get this on Chrome? • C4C - 2012

  C4C, in Kansas City, is always a fun event. At points it gets to be a pressure cooker as you zone in trying to crank out some fantastic code in just a few hours, but it is always fun. A great challenge of your skill as a software developer and for a good cause. This year my team helped The United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City organization to add online job applications and a database for tracking internal training. I keep finding that there is one key rule to pulling off a successful C4C weekend project, and that is “Keep It Simple”. Each time you want to add that one cool little feature you have to ask yourself.. Is it really necessary? and Do I have time for that? And if you are going to learn something new you should ask yourself if you’re really going to be able to learn that AND finish the project in the given time. Sometimes the less elegant code is the better code if it works. That said… You get a great amount of freedom to build the solution the way you want. Typically, the software we build for the charities will save them a lot of money and time and make their jobs easier. You are able to build the software you know you are capable of creating from your own ideas. I highly recommend any developers in the area to signup next year and show off your skills. I know I will!

• Any valid reason to Nest Master Pages in ASP.Net rather than Inherit?

  Currently in a debate at work and I cannot fathom why someone would intentionally avoid Inheritance with Master Pages. For reference here is the project setup: BaseProject MainMasterPage SomeEvent SiteProject SiteMasterPage nested MainMasterPage OtherSiteProject MainMasterPage (from BaseProject) The debate came up because some code in BaseProject needs to know about "SomeEvent". With the setup above, the code in BaseProject needs to call this.Master.Master. That same code in BaseProject also applies to OtherSiteProject which is just accessed as this.Master. SiteMasterPage has no code differences, only HTML differences. If SiteMasterPage Inherits MainMasterPage rather than Nests it, then all code is valid as this.Master. Can anyone think of a reason why to use a Nested Master Page here instead of an Inherited one?

• What naughty ways are there of driving traffic?

  OK, so this is purely for my intellectual curiosity and I'm not interested in illegal methods (no botnets please). But say, for instance, that some organisation incentivised link sharing in a bid to drive publicity. How could I drive traffic to my link? Obviously I could spam all my friends on social networking sites, which is what they want me to do, but that doesn't sound as fun as trying to game the system. (Not that I necessarily dispute the merit of this particular campaign.) The ideas I've come up with so far (in order of increasing deviousness) include: Link-dropping - This is too close to what they want me to do to be devious, but I've done it here (sorry) and I've done it on Twitter. I'm subverting it slightly by focusing on the game aspects rather than their desired message. AdWords - Not very devious at all, but effectively free with the vouchers I've accrued. That said, I must be pretty poor at choosing keywords, because I've seen very few hits (~5) so far. Browser testing websites - The target has a robots txt which prevents browsershots from processing it, but I got around this by including it in an iframe on a page that I hosted. But my creative juices have run dry I'm afraid. Does anyone have any cheeky/devious/cunning/all-of-the-above idea for driving traffic to my page?

• ATI Catalyst driver 12.8 is not using hardware acceleration on Precise

  I've been using Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst for years. On my clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 I've noticed that Catalyst 12.6 and then 12.8 are not actually using my HD5750 GPU for hardware acceleration - high CPU usage, zero GPU load. Everything installed correctly with no hassles, fglrxinfo and vainfo are correct as per this HowTo for Precise. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 with Catalyst 12.6 installation on the same hardware which does use the GPU - low CPU usage, high GPU load when transcodeing video files or playing video content. The VA-API drivers are not installed on the 10.04 build. They are not mentioned in this HowTo for Lucid. fgl_glxgears frame rates on Precise are a fifth of the rates on Lucid. LUCID jw@Kworld:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 16867 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3373.400 FPS 12523 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2504.600 FPS 13763 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2752.600 FPS PRECISE jw@NewWorld12:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 12905 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2581.000 FPS 3230 frames in 5.0 seconds = 646.000 FPS 517 frames in 5.0 seconds = 103.400 FPS 518 frames in 5.0 seconds = 103.600 FPS 6489 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1297.800 FPS This is glxgears running in fullscreen. • What exactly is "Web API" in ASP.Net MVC4?

  I know what a Web API is. I've written API's in multiple languages (including in MVC3). I'm also well practiced in ASP.Net. I just discovered that MVC4 has "Web API" and without going through the video examples I can't find a good explanation of what exactly it IS. From my past experience, Microsoft technologies (especially ASP.Net) have a tendency to take a simple concept and wrap it in a bunch of useless overhead that is meant to make everything "easier". Can someone please explain to me what Web API in MVC4 is exactly? Why do I need it? Why can't I just write my own API?

• Why use an OO approach instead of a giant "switch" statement?

  I am working in a .Net, C# shop and I have a coworker that keeps insisting that we should use giant Switch statements in our code with lots of "Cases" rather than more object oriented approaches. His argument consistently goes back to the fact that a Switch statement compiles to a "cpu jump table" and is therefore the fastest option (even though in other things our team is told that we don't care about speed). I honestly don't have an argument against this...because I don't know what the heck he's talking about. Is he right? Is he just talking out his ass? Just trying to learn here.

• Can anyone recommend a chorded keyboard for a programmer?

  Pre-emptive strike: It's subjective, but it's also Friday... ;) Inspired by this great question and related to this great question, I have decided to buy a chorded keyboard. (A chorded keyboard, by the way, is one with a reduced number of keys, that must be pressed together, in chords, to give all the possible characters etc. - see wikipedia) Being a programmer means that the keys I use regularly are likely different to a regular Joe (a lot more semi-colons for a start), so I was wondering if any of my fellow programmers had tested a chorded keyboard for use on the battlefield of code? Being a nerd, I'm also interested in the extent to which I'd be able to customise my chorded keyboard. (Macros? Shortcuts?) • Is there an app/script I can deploy to enable my users to change their own LDAP passwords?

  I've recently enabled LDAP based authentication on my domain. This has allowed us to use a single set of credentials to administer the blog, the forum and the wiki. Unfortunately, this has come at the cost of users being able to change their own passwords. Ideally, users would be able to visit a page (i.e. mydomain.com/account), authenticate and then change their password. Does anyone know of a script or app that will allow me to do this quickly and easily? I guess it wouldn't be hard to write in PHP, but I'd prefer not to have the hassle.

• Good architecture for user information on separate databases?

  I need to write an API to connect to an existing SQL database. The API will be written in ASP.Net MVC3. The slight problem is that with existing users of the system, they may have a username on multiple databases. Each company using the product gets a brand new instance of the database, but over the years (the system has been running for 10 years) there are quite a few users (hundreds) who have multiple usernames across multiple "companies" (things got fragmented obviously and sometimes a single Company has 5 "projects" that each have their own database). Long story short, I need to be able to have a single unified user login that will allow existing users to access their information across all their projects. The only thing I can think is storing a bunch of connection strings, but that feels like a really bad idea. I'll have a new Database that will hold the "unified user" information...can anyone suggest a solid system architecture that can handle a setup like this?

• Will the Mac app store accept an app that reads and parses iPhone backups?

  I wanted to submit an app to the Mac app store that reads the iPhone backup dir and provides some useful functionality on user's voicemails and sms messages. The app parses and reads the backup mbdb files, and extracts the voicemail and sms sqlite db files as well as the voicemails to a temp directory. Is this kind of app likely to be rejected since it reads an unpublished format? It's not using any private APIs. I realize none of you are reviewers but wondering if I should even try to submit it to the store.

  I hear Programmers often talk about how Information Wants To Be Free which I mostly agree with, but the thing that people don't often pay attention to is that Information and Data are not the same thing. Should Data also be free? Does that mean all of you should have full access to my Social Security Number and other personal "information"? Where is the limit? • Arguments for or against using Try/Catch as logical operators

  I just discovered some lovely code in our companies app that uses Try-Catch blocks as logical operators. Meaning, "do some code, if that throws this error, do this code, but if that throws this error do this 3rd thing instead". It uses "Finally" as the "else" statement it appears. I know that this is wrong inherently, but before I go picking a fight I was hoping for some well thought out arguments. And hey, if you have arguments FOR the use of Try-Catch in this manner, please do tell. EDIT For any who are wondering, the language is C# and the code in question is about 30+ lines and is looking for specific exceptions, it is not handling ALL exceptions.

• Adding multiple byte arrays in c# [migrated]

  I'm working on a legacy system that uses byte arrays for permission levels. Example: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 means they have "Full Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 means they have "Add Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 means they have "Delete Control" So, if a User has "00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07" that means they have all 3 (as far as it has been explained to me). Now, my question is that I need to know how to get to "0x07" when creating/checking records. I don't know the syntax for actually combining 0x01, 0x02 and 0x04 so that I come out with 0x07.

• Setting static IP on CentOS without system-config-network

  Background information: I have a problem installing system-config-network. It appears it cannot find an update to sqlite (checks every mirror and comes back empty handed.) I have tried the skipping broken option and package cleanups from yum-utils. Since I cannot get it installed, I decided to set an ip manually from console.   I am setting up a new Dell server with iDRAC 6 Express. My options for the NIC are: 1) Shared 2) Shared with failover to LOM2 3) Shared with failover to all LOMs The server has 2x dual-nic PCI-E cards (total of 4 nics) My questions are thusly: -What is best practice for setting this up? Is there any reason why I would not want option 3? -If the NIC is being used for both iDRAC and the OS, (there is no dedicated iDRAC nic), does this ever cause any kinds of issues for either iDRAC or the OS? • Useless Plesk Error?

  I am trying to determine why Plesk on my server won't start and I have no idea where to even start (since my hosting company appears to not want to help me out). • Where is the Plesk Error Log / Or how can I get Plesk running again?

  I currently have a VPS that is running Plesk and for some unknown reason it will not start. All the more information it gives me about it not starting is the following: Operation start with the VPS(s) VEID54635644 service "psa" is finished with errors: #703 Can not start/stop/restart service: service "psa" status is not "running" after command "start". This does really mean anything to me. Currently my server provider does not seem interested in helping me get Plesk running again so I am hoping I can get this going again on my own. I am assuming that there has to be an error log SOMEWHERE for Plesk, but the only thing I can find is located at /usr/local/psa/admin/logs/httpds_access_log and that just looks like an access log, not an error log (it is the only file in the directory). Is there another log somewhere in the system for this that I do not know about? Is there a way to find out why Plesk did not start? Thanks Josh Pennington

• Aironet 1200's Auto-Channel Feature: When should it be used?

  In our building we have around 25 1200 series Aironets, with a bit of overlap in some areas. Up until this point, we have had them deployed in alternating 1/6/11 channels, but we are wondering if we would get better performance if we used the auto-channel select feature. In looking around, I have seen comments that this feature should not be used as the WAP does a channel scan only on the radio startup, but I have not found this in any Cisco docs. • System Monitoring Redundancy

  I consult in a small business environment where I have two HyperV hosts (with <10 VMs) + a couple other servers. I recently had an issue where one of the HyperV hosts had a CPU issue and it came down, bringing most of my non-critical VMs with it, plus a free piece of software that I use for network & system monitoring and availability. Because of this, and the fact that iDRAC locked up to, I did not get any alerts about the crash. So I am wondering how I can (cheaply) get a redundant availability monitoring system in place--Is is as simple as running Nagios or Zenoss (or whatever) on two different HyperV hosts? It just seems like running more than one copy of Nagios/Zenoss/etc could be expensive and have high overhead. Thoughts? Thanks! -Josh

• Boot to VHD backup plan

  I have a machine that I just reinstalled Windows and all of my applications onto... what a chore that is. I want to totally and completely avoid this from now on by creating an image. My first thought was to see if it possible to copy a VHD file when you are booted into it since I am using Windows 7 Ultimate as boot-to-vhd (without a parent machine).
