• Laptop screen not detected but ubuntu working on other monitor

  I have a laptop with with intel celeron inside 64 bit, the 64 bit amd ubuntu 11.10 is working on the laptop, just it wont detect the laptop screen but the same live usb worked on amd 64 pc, When i connected the desktop computer monitor to the laptop it worked perfectly with 1920x1080 screen, battery, WIFI. Im not sure if its cause i made the usb it with LiLo live usb creator on the desktop pc, should i remake the usb on the laptop?

• With no password expire notification at logon in Windows 7, how are you configuring password expire

  To my understanding, Windows 7 users do not receive password expiration notification during the logon process - it occurs strictly from the system tray. We currently have tray balloon notifications disabled to lessen user distraction, and I expect the password change process is a smoother one during the logon process rather than in an existing session. As a result, users will get prompted to change their passwords at expiration. The users also connect to Terminal Services boxes, but receive the advanced notification for password expiration there. So, Windows 7 is not notifying, but TS/RDS and XP boxes are. Any guidance on configuring this? Personally, I would turn off all expiration notices, but I understand most users would prefer to see the notification. Thoughts? Any GPO or other settings I might be overlooking? The interactive logon setting below is already enabled for our Win7 workstation GPO. My thought is balloon notifications will get turned back on for Windows 7, but I wanted to see if anyone was aware of alternatives. Thanks.   Hi, A friend has managed to set up their new Windows 7 Home Premium Dell Inspiron and forgot the password they have used. I have tried the following password reset software to no avail: UBCD OHPCrack Offline NT Password & Registry Editor *Trinity Kon Boot I have also tried to do a system restore but this asks for the password. The user does not have any data they need to save. Is there anyway I can get access to the restore partition using Linux to create a recovery disk or do I have to purchase a recovery disk from Dell? Any help is greatly appreciated.

One is safe, while the other not so much. I remember when Windows Server 2003 was first released and resetting a user’s password had a distinct warning about irreversible loss of information. I wondered why it wasn’t mentioned in previous operating systems, but I also wondered if it was true since I never personally noticed any impact. It wasn’t until about a year ago when I really dug in to understand this topic better. This week’s lesson covers the differences between a change password and a reset password. • Wireless card on HP laptop not working

  I just bought an HP Envy m6-1125dx online from Best Buy. When I got it home and started it up, the wireless card did not work well - at all. I could connect, but any real usage would cause the connection to start dropping every 30 seconds or so, and it would be really slow. Taking another look at the reviews on the Best Buy site, it seems only a few others had this problem, so I took it to my local Best Buy and exchanged it for another unit. Got it home again and the card had the same issues. Which leads to my dilemma. First: does this model have several different cards that it could come with? Mine is a Ralink RT5390R (on both units I received). If it does, then I can keep exchanging until I get a unit with a different card. I wouldn't ask this, except it seems weird that only a few people mentioned this issue, so I thought that might be one possibility. I looked in to replacing the card with a different one myself, but it seems that HP blocks certain wireless cards. However, some people reported success in replacing the card, and this site said it was only an issue on "older HP computer[s]". Can anyone confirm this? Finally, if that fails/will not work, does anyone know what I can get through Best Buy? I am concerned that they will not put any different card than the Ralink, and after two of those, I don't want that. Can I ask Best Buy support to use a different card? Can they even get another card from HP? I guess the base question is: should I attempt to replace the card myself (two days via Amazon to get a new card), should I try to get the laptop repaired through Best Buy (two - four weeks), should I go for a different model laptop from Best Buy, or should I try a different unit of the same model (three's the charm?).

• Unlock all private keys on Ubuntu, entering password only once at login

  I login to Ubuntu 12.04 using a password. Later on, when I use my browser(Chrome), I'm asked for a password to unlock the keychain so that the browser can access my saved credentials for various websites (it's the same password). Also, whenever I use SSH to connect to other computers using my private key, I am prompted for the same password to unlock my private key. How can I make it so that I am asked for my password exactly once per login (given that my login password is the same as the one I use for all my private keys)? Probably someone will try to label this question as a duplicate of this question, this question, or this question. While these questions are similar, none of them explicitly say that there still needs to be a password entered on login, as I am demanding here. As a result, the accepted solutions just say "set your passwords to blank"--I don't want that, it's dangerous! So I am aware of the similar questions, but none of them has received the correct answer yet, because they are slightly different.

  I receive this message when trying to change my password: "Bad: new and old password are too similar" The passwords' "similarity" is irrelevant for my needs, so I'd like to bypass this. I tried sudo passwd $my_username I thought this had worked because I got a message: passwd: password updated successfully However, the password change has no effect after leaving the terminal, and my old password is still the only one recognized. I can see that it works at console login it ask me for a password change, however, on graphic mode (LXDE) it just returns to login screen after entered my user and password and never asks me for a password chage.   My HP dv6000 laptop will not run on battery power. It will only run while plugged into the wall. I have already replaced the battery, but it still will not operate on battery power. The problem began slowly. The original battery's life got shorter and shorter, until eventually it would only last ~45 seconds before going into hibernation. Finally, the battery would not work at all, so I threw it out and just used it without a battery. I bought a replacement recently.... but the problem persists. When I connect the new battery to the system, the "charging" light turns on for about 30 seconds, then goes dark. I'm assuming there's something wrong with the internal charging circuitry? If this is the case, how would I go about fixing this, short of buying a new motherboard? If anyone could give me some assistance in confirming/rejecting my diagnosis I'd be very appreciative! :)

  Here's our problem, users who want to change their password trough OWA get this error "The password you entered doesn't meet the minimum security requirements.", even if users are respecting the minimum security requirements. With these settings, we have the error: Enforced password history 1 passwords remembered Maximum password age 185 days Minimum password age 1 day Minimum password length 7 characters Password must meet complexity requirements enabled With these test settings, we don't have an error: Enforced password history not defined Maximum password age not defined Minimum password age not defined Minimum password length not defined Password must meet complexity requirements not defined People can change their password but there is no more security! Just changing one parameter of the GPO for example "Enforced password history", brings back this error. Here's our server configuration : Windows Server 2008 R2 Exchange Server 2010 Version: 14.00.0722.000 If anybody has a clue it would very helpful !

• Password expiration notice for Active Directory

  Are there any tools/apps/scripts out there that will do password expiry notification for Windows 2008 Active Directory credentials? This is needed for our web apps that use Active Directory for LDAP authentication. The problem is those apps do not notify you that your password is going to expire when you login. We have many offsite users who do not have machines bound to the AD. So there is no way to let them know to reset their password. I'd like the user to be notified 30,7 and 1 day before it expires. I'd also like our help desk to get an email for the expiring passwords for the week and recently expired passwords. I've looked at oldcmp.exe from link text and that gets me my reports but it does not do the automation that I'm looking for on the individual users.

• Iverter, inverter cable, or a display cable?

  I was recently hired at a small repair shop. I work indoors while my boss does on site calls for small businesses. I have to troubleshoot and fix laptop screens a few times a week and this is why I'm posting this question. I'm having trouble figuring out how to stream line the troubleshooting process. For example, how do I determine whether the inverter is broken while also determining that the inverter cable is not. How can I quickly decide that the inverter cable is broken while knowing that the inverter is most likely not broke. Or how do I know that it's just the display cable? It seems like this is a good way to approach things: "It could be the inverter, backlight, or the LCD panel itself. Backlight failure is usually hinted at by a pink hue to everything. Inverter failure usually results in the dimming of images on the screen to the point where the backlight is not even on (the inverter provides power to the backlight)" Source. While remembering that things "like flickering, screen freeze in dark image and [a] corner starts to get brighter" point to a "failure in the LCD panel itself, though it could just as easily be a loose data cable connected to the back of the LCD." Source. In short, I'm soliciting advice that anyone might have on how to quickly make the best decision about what's causing problems with laptops display. Thank you.

• Laptop hangs on POST and does not finish except on rare occasions

  I have an old Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop that hangs on POST when I try to start it. On rare occasions it does finish the POST and boots Windows successfully, but most times it just finishes it partially and continues to hang. I can enter the BIOS though when it has frozen, but I have to open the DVD-drive first for some reason. The keyboard is not quite right either, and I can't navigate the BIOS properly because the arrow keys doesn't work. I tried an external keyboard, but the problem persisted. I have tried to remove the memory, hard drive, and battery to see if any of these were the problem, but it did not solve it. The one logical thing left to do would be to remove the CMOS battery, but the "brilliant" engineers at Toshiba have place it such that a complete disassembly of the machine is necessary. What this all boils down to is basically the question of whether I can "save" this machine and get it to boot properly, or if I should just send it off to recycling. I suspect it might need costly repairs, but I can't bring myself to throw it away before I have made sure it's completely dead.

• Turn off laptop display and have monitor

  My laptop display has stopped working and is unfixable! Anyway, I got a full HD monitor and plugged that into the HDMI port of the laptop. I have changed the power settings so that I can close the lid and still have the monitor on, and this all works. However because it is on "mirror displays", I cannot get the full 1080p resolution that the monitor supports, and when I turn off mirror displays and switch off the laptop screen, the monitor will also switch off! I'm really stuck, as I can only get the monitor to display its full resolution if I have it with the laptop screen turned on, and I dont want this because (as the laptop display does not work) things get lost on that side of the screen. HELP. (Dell Studio 1537 Monitor is Samsung SA300 Connected through HDMI Ubuntu 11.10)

• Reset Windows Password with Ubuntu Live CD

  A friend brought me his PC with Windows Vista to reset the user password because he didn't use it for a long while and forgot his password. So I found a tutorial on how to reset the password by using a Ubuntu Live CD and the software chntpw. After I installed this software I mounted the SYSTEM partition by opening it with the file explorer. It is now available at /media/SYSTEM/ The tutorial says I have to open the file /windows/system32/config/sam with chntpw and reset the password with chntpw -u USERNAME sam After I did this it didn't show me any errors. So I unmounted the partition and rebooted the PC with the installed Windows Vista. It is still locked with the old password. Did I do any mistakes or is there an other way to reset the password?
