  • In Birt Reports - Displaying the most common string value in group.

    - by Ben
    For this example data: Index, State, Food 1, CA, Hamburger 2, NY, Lettuce 3, CA, Cheese 4, NY, Lettuce 5, NY, Cheese 6, AR, Cheese I would like to group by State and show the most common food for each state. So the result for the example should be: State, Popular Food CA, Hamburger NY, Lettuce AR, Cheese The problem is I can't find an aggregation that would return the most common string. There is the 'mode' function but it only works on integers. Am I missing Something? Thanks!

  • Remove certain keys from a dictionary in python

    - by Margaret
    I'm trying to construct a dictionary that contains a series of sets: {Field1:{Value1, Value2, Value3}, Field2{Value4}} The trouble is, I then wish to delete any fields from the dictionary that only have one value in the set. I have been writing code like this: for field in FieldSet: if len(FieldSet[field]) == 1: del(FieldSet[field]) But receive the error "RuntimeError: dictionary changed size during execution". (Not surprising, since that's what I'm doing.) It's not the be-all and end-all if I have to knock together some sort of workaround, but is it possible to do this?

  • Infinite loop when adding a row to a list in a class in python3

    - by Margaret
    I have a script which contains two classes. (I'm obviously deleting a lot of stuff that I don't believe is relevant to the error I'm dealing with.) The eventual task is to create a decision tree, as I mentioned in this question. Unfortunately, I'm getting an infinite loop, and I'm having difficulty identifying why. I've identified the line of code that's going haywire, but I would have thought the iterator and the list I'm adding to would be different objects. Is there some side effect of list's .append functionality that I'm not aware of? Or am I making some other blindingly obvious mistake? class Dataset: individuals = [] #Becomes a list of dictionaries, in which each dictionary is a row from the CSV with the headers as keys def field_set(self): #Returns a list of the fields in individuals[] that can be used to split the data (i.e. have more than one value amongst the individuals def classified(self, predicted_value): #Returns True if all the individuals have the same value for predicted_value def fields_exhausted(self, predicted_value): #Returns True if all the individuals are identical except for predicted_value def lowest_entropy_value(self, predicted_value): #Returns the field that will reduce <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy_%28information_theory%29">entropy</a> the most def __init__(self, individuals=[]): and class Node: ds = Dataset() #The data that is associated with this Node links = [] #List of Nodes, the offspring Nodes of this node level = 0 #Tree depth of this Node split_value = '' #Field used to split out this Node from the parent node node_value = '' #Value used to split out this Node from the parent Node def split_dataset(self, split_value): fields = [] #List of options for split_value amongst the individuals datasets = {} #Dictionary of Datasets, each one with a value from fields[] as its key for field in self.ds.field_set()[split_value]: #Populates the keys of fields[] fields.append(field) datasets[field] = Dataset() for i in self.ds.individuals: #Adds individuals to the datasets.dataset that matches their result for split_value datasets[i[split_value]].individuals.append(i) #<---Causes an infinite loop on the second hit for field in fields: #Creates subnodes from each of the datasets.Dataset options self.add_subnode(datasets[field],split_value,field) def add_subnode(self, dataset, split_value='', node_value=''): def __init__(self, level, dataset=Dataset()): My initialisation code is currently: if __name__ == '__main__': filename = (sys.argv[1]) #Takes in a CSV file predicted_value = "# class" #Identifies the field from the CSV file that should be predicted base_dataset = parse_csv(filename) #Turns the CSV file into a list of lists parsed_dataset = individual_list(base_dataset) #Turns the list of lists into a list of dictionaries root = Node(0, Dataset(parsed_dataset)) #Creates a root node, passing it the full dataset root.split_dataset(root.ds.lowest_entropy_value(predicted_value)) #Performs the first split, creating multiple subnodes n = root.links[0] n.split_dataset(n.ds.lowest_entropy_value(predicted_value)) #Attempts to split the first subnode.

  • Find a date between start_date and end_date

    - by Margaret
    I have a table of events with a recorded start and end time. I want to find all events that occur on a specific date. Some events started a year ago and some will continue farther ahead. I would like to be able to pick for example May 20, 2010 and find all events occurring on that date.

  • Parse a CSV file using python (to make a decision tree later)

    - by Margaret
    First off, full disclosure: This is going towards a uni assignment, so I don't want to receive code. :). I'm more looking for approaches; I'm very new to python, having read a book but not yet written any code. The entire task is to import the contents of a CSV file, create a decision tree from the contents of the CSV file (using the ID3 algorithm), and then parse a second CSV file to run against the tree. There's a big (understandable) preference to have it capable of dealing with different CSV files (I asked if we were allowed to hard code the column names, mostly to eliminate it as a possibility, and the answer was no). The CSV files are in a fairly standard format; the header row is marked with a # then the column names are displayed, and every row after that is a simple series of values. Example: # Column1, Column2, Column3, Column4 Value01, Value02, Value03, Value04 Value11, Value12, Value13, Value14 At the moment, I'm trying to work out the first part: parsing the CSV. To make the decisions for the decision tree, a dictionary structure seems like it's going to be the most logical; so I was thinking of doing something along these lines: Read in each line, character by character If the character is not a comma or a space Append character to temporary string If the character is a comma Append the temporary string to a list Empty string Once a line has been read Create a dictionary using the header row as the key (somehow!) Append that dictionary to a list However, if I do things that way, I'm not sure how to make a mapping between the keys and the values. I'm also wondering whether there is some way to perform an action on every dictionary in a list, since I'll need to be doing things to the effect of "Everyone return their values for columns Column1 and Column4, so I can count up who has what!" - I assume that there is some mechanism, but I don't think I know how to do it. Is a dictionary the best way to do it? Would I be better off doing things using some other data structure? If so, what?

  • How do I exclude outliers from an aggregate query?

    - by Margaret
    I'm creating a report comparing total time and volume across units. Here a simplification of the query I'm using at the moment: SELECT m.Unit, COUNT(*) AS Count, SUM(m.TimeInMinutes) AS TotalTime FROM main_table m WHERE m.unit <> '' AND m.TimeInMinutes > 0 GROUP BY m.Unit HAVING COUNT(*) > 15 However, I have been told that I need to exclude cases where the row's time is in the highest or lowest 5% to try and get rid of a few wacky outliers. (As in, remove the rows before the aggregates are applied.) How do I do that?

  • Learning programming

    - by user65862
    I am a senior & am a retired R.N., always good at math (50+ yrs ago, but still am). I have been in a computer users group since the mid 90's, & have become moderately advanced in using computers, including trouble-shooting other people's computer problems. Most of my expertise was gained by reading, asking questions, & trying my own trouble-shooting with the help of books & the internet. Now,I would like to take the next step and learn programming. What would be the best way for me to learn programming? Attending classes isn't a practical option, and I'm not in a position to spend much money. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. • Great Indian Developer Summit Wrap-Up

    Last week I spoke at the Great Indian Developer Summit in Bangalore, India. This was my second year speaking at GIDS, so it was great to be back. Before the event Teleriks Team Fantastic Four set up the booth and then hit McDonalds for a Maharaja Mac. Remember India does not eat beef, so we HAD to go to McDonalds and check it out! • how to make Excel/Access data have more than one quantity in a table?

    - by Xrave
    Sorry for the confusing question, I'm not sure how to word it right: here's a mock sample of my data Name: Cheeseburger Date: 1/20/2011 Stock: 30 Price: 200 Name: Hamburger Date: 1/20/2011 Stock: 12 Price: 180 Name: Cheeseburger Date: 1/21/2011 Stock: 31 Price: 210 ... I will have to make a table in excel or access capable of looking up the stock and price trends of a particular brand through time. Trouble is, I have two independent variables (Stock, Price) and two known dependent variables (Name, Date). So, I cannot use a simple table where the x axis is the name, y axis is the time, and the cells represent a quantity - each cell have to represent two quantities (Stock, Price) Does anyone know how to do that? Thanks.

  • How to extract common / significant phrases from a series of text entries

    - by arronsky
    I have a series of text items- raw HTML from a MYSQL database. I want to find the most common phrases in these entries (not the single most common phrase, and ideally, not enforcing word-for-word matching). My example is any review on Yelp.com, that shows 3 snippets from hundreds of reviews of a given restaurant, in the format: "Try the hamburger" (in 44 reviews) e.g., the "Review Highlights" section of this page: http://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-gen-los-angeles/ I have NLTK installed and I've played around with it a bit, but am honestly overwhelmed by the options. This seems like a rather common problem and I haven't been able to find a straightforward solution by searching here. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Large amount of constants in Java

    - by Lars D
    I need to include about 1 MByte of data in a Java application, for very fast and easy access in the rest of the source code. My main background is not Java, so my initial idea was to convert the data directly to Java source code, defining 1MByte of constant arrays, classes (instead of C++ struct) etc., something like this: public final/immutable/const MyClass MyList[] = { { 23012, 22, "Hamburger"} , { 28375, 123, "Kieler"} }; However, it seems that Java does not support such constructs. Is this correct? If yes, what is the best solution to this problem?

  • Easiest way to submit data via PHP?

    - by Abijah
    I'm new to PHP, and have spent 10 hours trying to figure this problem out. The goal is to take all data entered into this order form, and send it to my email via PHP. I have 2 questions: 1. I can get PHP to send data from a single menu item (example: Mexican Tortas), but how do I get PHP to send data from multiple items (example: Mexican Tortas, Fish Sandwich and Hamburger)? 2. How do I tell PHP to not send data from menu items that don't have the "How Many?" or "Customize It?" text fields filled out? If you could provide a super simple example (or a link to a learning resource) I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Abijah PHP <?php if(isset($_POST['submit'])) { $to = "[email protected]"; $subject = "New Order"; $name_field = $_POST['name']; $phone_field = $_POST['phone']; $item = $_POST['item']; $quantity = $_POST['quantity']; $customize = $_POST['customize']; } $body = "Name: $name_field\nPhone: $phone_field\n\nItem: $item\nQuantity: $quantity\nCustomize: $customize"; echo "Data has been submitted to $to!"; mail($to, $subject, $body); ?> HTML <form action="neworder.php" method="POST"> <div class ="item"> <img style="float:left; margin-right:15px; border:1px Solid #000; width:200px; height:155px;" src="images/mexicantortas.jpg"> <h1>Mexican Torta - $8.50</h1> <input name="item" type="hidden" value="Mexican Torta"/> <h2>How Many? <font color="#999999">Ex: 1, 2, 3...?</font></h2> <input name="quantity" type="text"/> <h3>Customize It? <font color="#999999">Ex: No Lettuce, Extra Cheese...</font></h3> <textarea name="customize"/></textarea> </div><!-- ITEM_LEFT --> <div class ="item"> <img style="float:left; margin-right:15px; border:1px Solid #000; width:200px; height:155px;" src="images/fishsandwich.jpg"> <h1>Fish Sandwich - $8.50</h1> <input name="item" type="hidden" value="Fish Sandwich"/> <h2>How Many? <font color="#999999">Ex: 1, 2, 3...?</font></h2> <input name="quantity" type="text"/> <h3>Customize It? <font color="#999999">Ex: No Lettuce, Extra Cheese...</font></h3> <textarea name="customize"/></textarea> </div><!-- ITEM_LEFT --> <div class ="item"> <img style="float:left; margin-right:15px; border:1px Solid #000; width:200px; height:155px;" src="images/hamburgers.jpg"> <h1>Hamburger w/ Fries - $7.00</h1> <input name="item" type="hidden" value="Fish Sandwich"/> <h2>How Many? <font color="#999999">Ex: 1, 2, 3...?</font></h2> <input name="quantity" type="text"/> <h3>Customize It? <font color="#999999">Ex: No Lettuce, Extra Cheese...</font></h3> <textarea name="customize"/></textarea> </div><!-- ITEM_LEFT --> <div class="horizontal_form"> <div class="form"> <h2>Place Your Order Now: <font size="3"><font color="#037B41">Fill in the form below, and we'll call you when your food is ready to be picked up...</font></font></h2> <p class="name"> <input type="text" name="name" id="name" style="text-align:center;" onClick="this.value='';" value="Enter your name"/> </p> <p class="phone"> <input type="text" name="phone" id="phone" style="text-align:center;" onClick="this.value='';" value="Enter your phone #"/> </p> <p class="submit"> <input type="submit" value="Place Order" name="submit"/> </p> </div><!-- FORM --> </div><!-- HORIZONTAL_FORM --> </form>

  • Why does mobile first responsive design tend to not use max-width queries alongside the min-width queries?

    - by Sam
    First off, I understand the basic principles behind mobile first responsive web design, and totally agree with them. But one thing I don't understand: In my experience, not all styles for small screens can be used for the larger version of a website. For example, usually smaller versions tend to have larger clickable areas, hamburger navigation, etc. So I sometimes have to override these specific styles, aside from just progressively enhancing the base styles. So I was wondering: why is max-width rarely mentioned (or used) in the context of mobile-first responsive web design? Because it looks like it could be used to isolate styles for smaller screens that are not useful for larger screens, and would thus prevent unnecessary duplication of code. A quote which mentions min-width as typically mobile-first, but not max-width: Mobile first, from a coding perspective, means that your base style is typically a single-column, fully-fluid layout. You use @media (min-width: whatever) to add a grid-based layout on top of that. from: http://gomakethings.com/mobile-first-and-internet-explorer/ EDIT: So to be more specific: I was wondering if there is a reason to exclude max-width from a mobile-first responsive design (as it seems like it can be useful for writing your css as DRY as possible, as some styles for small screens will not be used for bigger screens).

  • Oracle Fusion Middleware gives you Choice and Portability for Public and Private Cloud

    - by Michelle Kimihira
    Author: Margaret Lee, Senior Director, Product Management, Oracle Fusion Middleware Cloud Computing allows customers to quickly develop and deploy applications in a shared environment.  The environment can span across hardward (IaaS), foundation layer software (PaaS), and end-user software (SaaS). Cloud Computing provides compelling benefits in terms of business agility and IT cost savings.  However, with complex, existing heterogeneous architectures, and concerns for security and manageability, enterprises are challenged to define their Cloud strategy.  For most enterprises, the solution is a hybrid of private and public cloud.  Fusion Middleware supports customers’ Cloud requirements through choice and portability. Fusion Middleware supports a variety of cloud development and deployment models:  Oracle [Public] Cloud; customer private cloud; hybrid of these two, and traditional dedicated, on-premise model Customers can develop applications in any of these models and deployed in another, providing the flexibility and portability they need Oracle Cloud is a public cloud offering.  Within Oracle Cloud, Fusion Middleware provides two key offerings include the Developer cloud service and Java cloud deployment service. If your enterprise prefers a private cloud, for reasons such as security, control, manageability, and complex integration that prevent your applications from being deployed on a public cloud, Fusion Middleware also provide you with the products and tools you need.  Sometimes called Private PaaS, private clouds have their predecessors in shared-services arrangements many large companies have been building in the past decade.  The difference, however, are in the scope of the services, and depth of their capabilities.  In terms of vertical stack depth, private clouds not only provide hardware and software infrastructure to run your applications, they also provide services such as integration and security, that your applications need.  Horizontally, private clouds provide monitoring, management, lifecycle, and charge back capabilities out-of-box that shared-services platforms did not have before. Oracle Fusion Middleware includes the complete stack of hardware and software for you to build private clouds: SOA suite and BPM suite to support systems integration and process flow between applications deployed on your private cloud and the rest of your organization Identity and Access Management suite to provide security, provisioning, and access services for applications deployed on your private cloud WebLogic Server to run your applications Enterprise Manager's Cloud Management pack to monitor, manage, upgrade applications running on your private cloud Exalogic or optimized Oracle-Sun hardware to build out your private cloud The most important key differentiator for Oracle's cloud solutions is portability, between private and public clouds.  This is unique to Oracle because portability requires the vendor to have product depth and breadth in both public cloud services and private cloud product offerings.  Most public cloud vendors cannot provide the infrastructure and tools customers need to build their own private clouds.  In reverse, traditional software tools vendors typically do not have the product and expertise breadth to build out and offer a public cloud.  Oracle can.  It is important for customers that the products and technologies  Oracle uses to build its public is the same set that it sells to customers for them to build private clouds.  Fundamentally, that enables skills reuse,  as well as application portability. • No route matches [GET] "/user/sign_out"

    So, I'm getting the below error when clicking on Sign Out on my drop down menu on the nav: No route matches [GET] "/user/sign_out" However, this only happens when using the sign out on the drop down nav (the hamburger menu for mobile devices) and not when clicking the sign out on the regular nav. See the code below: <div class="container demo-5"> <div class="main clearfix"> <div class="column"> <div id="dl-menu" class="dl-menuwrapper"> <button class="dl-trigger">Open Menu</button> <ul class="dl-menu dl-menu-toggle"> <div id="closebtn" onclick="closebtn()"></div> <% if user_signed_in? %> <li><%= link_to 'FAQ', faq_path %></li> <li><a href="#">Contact Us</a></li> <li><%= link_to 'My Account', account_path %></li> <li><%= link_to 'Sign Out', destroy_user_session_path, method: 'delete' %></li> <--- this is the line <% else %> <li><%= link_to 'FAQ', faq_path %></li> <li><a href="#">Contact Us</a></li> <li><%= link_to 'Sign In', new_user_session_path %></li> <li><%= link_to 'Free Trial', plans_path %></li> <% end %> </ul> </div><!-- /dl-menuwrapper --> </div> </div> </div><!-- /container --> </div> And this is the non-drop down code that works: <div class="signincontainer pull-right"> <div class="navbar-form navbar-right"> <% if user_signed_in? %> <%= link_to 'Sign out', destroy_user_session_path, class: 'btn signin-button', method: :delete %> <div class="btn signin-button usernamefont"><%= link_to current_user.full_name, account_path %></div> <% else %> ....rest of code here Updated error: ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches [GET] "/user/sign_out"): actionpack (4.0.4) lib/action_dispatch/middleware/debug_exceptions.rb:21:in `call' actionpack (4.0.4) lib/action_dispatch/middleware/show_exceptions.rb:30:in `call' railties (4.0.4) lib/rails/rack/logger.rb:38:in `call_app' railties (4.0.4) lib/rails/rack/logger.rb:20:in `block in call' activesupport (4.0.4) lib/active_support/tagged_logging.rb:68:in `block in tagged' activesupport (4.0.4) lib/active_support/tagged_logging.rb:26:in `tagged' activesupport (4.0.4) lib/active_support/tagged_logging.rb:68:in `tagged' railties (4.0.4) lib/rails/rack/logger.rb:20:in `call' quiet_assets (1.0.2) lib/quiet_assets.rb:18:in `call_with_quiet_assets' actionpack (4.0.4) lib/action_dispatch/middleware/request_id.rb:21:in `call' rack (1.5.2) lib/rack/methodoverride.rb:21:in `call' rack (1.5.2) lib/rack/ru
