Print SSRS Report / PDF automatically from SQL Server agent or Windows Service

This is for the reason that we do not have a full software development team to maintain an app and we have to minimize the support overhead for the support team.Here is my setup:SQL Server 2008 R2 in Windows Server 2008 R2PDF format reports generated by SSRS Reports subscriptions to a Windows File ShareNetwork printerColoured reports with logo and brandingI have found and tested the following solutions to no avail:ProsConsCalling Adobe Acrobat Reader exe: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\acroRd32.exe" /n /s /o /h /t "C:\temp\print.pdf" \\printserver\printername"Very simple optionAdobe Acrobat reader requires to launch the GUI to send a job to a printer. Hence, this option cannot be used when printing from a service.Calling Adobe Acrobat Reader exe as a process from a .NET console appA bit harder than above, but still a simple solutionSame as cons abovePowershell script(Start-Process -FilePath "C:\temp\print.pdf" -Verb Print)Very simple optionUses default PDF client in quiet mode to Print, but also requires an active session. Foxit ReaderVery simple optionRequires GUI same as Adobe Acrobat Reader Using the Reporting Services Web service to run and stream the report to an image object and then passed to the printerQuite complexThis is what we're trying to avoid After pulling my hair out for two days, testing and evaluating the above solutions, I ended up learning more about printers (more than ever in my entire life) and how printer drivers work with PostScripts. I then bumped on to a PostScript interpreter called GhostScript (http://www.ghostscript.com/) and then the solution starts to get clearer and clearer.I managed to achieve a solution (maybe not be the simplest but efficient enough to achieve the least-maintenance-least-components goal) in 3-simple steps:Install GhostScript (http://www.ghostscript.com/download/) - this is an open-source PostScript and PDF interpreter. Printing directly using GhostScript only produces grayscale prints using the laserjet generic driver unless you save as BMP image and then interpret the colours using the imageInstall GSView (http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/)- this is a GhostScript add-on to make it easier to directly print to a Windows printer. GSPrint automates the above PDF -> BMP -> Printer Driver.Run the GSPrint command from SQL Server agent or Windows Service:"C:\Program Files\Ghostgum\gsview\gsprint.exe" -color -landscape -all -printer "printername" "C:\temp\print.pdf"Command line options are here: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/gsprint.htmAnother lesson learned is, since you are calling the script from the Service Account, it will not necessarily have the Printer mapped in its Windows profile (if it even has one). The workaround to this is by adding a local printer as you normally would and then map this printer to the network printer. Note that you may need to install the Printer Driver locally in the server.So, that's it! There are many ways to achieve a solution. The key thing is how you provide the smartest solution!

Can't change text color in Microsoft Word 2010

I have Microsoft Office 2010 32-bit running on Windows 7 32-bit. When text is highlighted and a color is selected from the mini-toolbar or the ribbon, the text does not change color. If I change the color for multiple words, and select a different color for each word, the toolbar and ribbon will reflect each of the different colors that I chose, however it is not displayed in the document. So it appears that Word is aware of the text color and not as if it is simply not applying the change. What may be causing this inability to view text colors and how might I fix it? My only troubleshooting attempt so far has been to perform a repair installation of Office. EDIT 1 I created a document, typed a word, selected it and changed the color. I then saved the document as HTML. The text did not change color. Oddly, I had some strange issues while the macro was recorded. I could not select text with my cursor. I had to select the text with control a and then apply the color change. I then couldn't deselect the selected text. Nonetheless, the text showed that it had a different color in the toolbar, but the color did not display in the document. Here's the macro: Sub Change_Text_Color() ' ' Change_Text_Color Macro ' ' Selection.TypeText Text:="Test Text" Selection.WholeStory Selection.WholeStory End Sub EDIT 3 I opened WordPad and created some text and was able to successfully change the color. If I copy and paste the colored text into a Word 2010 document, the color is lost. However, if you place the I-beam in the text and then look at the color selection drop-down menu on the ribbon or mini-toolbar, you can see that the proper color that the text should be in is highlighted. Edit 4 I uninstalled the entire Office 2010 Suite, rebooted and then reinstalled the suite. No change in behavior. Edit 5 Text cannot be colored in Excel either.

ssh agent forwarding with many identities

I have setup ssh agent forwarding, and I know it works. I also have many keys setup in the agent. The problem is there are so many keys that I get: Received disconnect from XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: 2: Too many authentication failures for bob The way around this is to use IdentitiesOnly=yes so that ssh will only send the identity you want it to for the specified host. I've also gotten this implemented and I know it works, without agent forwarding. Now, I'm trying to combine the two features. That is, I want to use agent forwarding, but also be able to specify which identity to use when connecting. Problem is, I can't figure out how to do this. So, I want to connect from box A through box B to box C. Box A has all of the identity files and the ssh agent running. I want to edit box A or B's ssh config file(s) to use a specific identity that exists in box A's agent (which is being forwarded).

I have always heard that SDE interviews are much harder to crack than SDET. Is it really true? I have also heard that if candidate doesnt do well in SDE interview he is also sometimes offered SDET position. How much truth is there into these talks? I would highly appreciate if someone would put good resources and guidelines for how to prepare for Microsoft interviews..which books to read, which notes, online programming questions websites, etc. Give as much info as possible. Tab key in Microsoft Word does not increase indent in bullet lists

I create a bullet list, of any type and after pressing Enter then Tab instead of increasing the indent it just injected white-space. I'm using the default template (.dot), there's been no changes to it, can't see any misconfigured settings for this either... Note: this is happening in MS Word 2007

Running ssh-agent from a shell script

I'm trying to create a shell script that, among other things, starts up ssh-agent and adds a private key to the agent. Example: #!/bin/bash # ... ssh-agent $SHELL ssh-add /path/to/key # ... The problem with this is ssh-agent apparently kicks off another instance of $SHELL (in my case, bash) and from the script's perspective it's executed everything and ssh-add and anything below it is never run. How can I run ssh-agent from my shell script and keep it moving on down the list of commands?

agent.exe process (with the description "Macrovision Software Manager Agent") needs 30-50% CPU usage. After killing the process, it starts again some seconds later. My virus scanner (OfficeScan) does not report any viruses. Does anyone have an idea how to resolve it?

Tool to export Microsoft project to website?

Just wondering does anyone know of a free/open source tool that take a Microsoft project file and export it to HTML? I know you can save a project file as HTML, so wanted a tool that would do this automatically? Maybe also displaying graphs/gantt chart as well? If not, any ideas of how I would write a program to do this, preferably in java? I know of Aspose.Tasks (http://www.aspose.com/categories/.net-components/aspose.tasks-for-.net/default.aspx), which can export projects files to gantt charts in png format, but it's not free and is only available in C#.

When importing an Access table into Excel, a look-up column is showing all values as numbers

I have a basic Access to Excel question that has me frustrated. I have two Access 2010 data tables. One is a list of managers. The primary key is a manager ID (which is an autonumber because managers can have the same name), and each row also has manager name, manager email, etc. The second data table is a list of departments. The primary key for each row is a unique department code, and the foreign key is a manager ID (autonumber). I used the Look-up Wizard to create this connection. However, Access does not show the manager ID in the foreign key location. It shows Manager Name like I requested when I used the Look-up Wizard. Now I am trying to import the second table (departments) into Excel 2010. I clicked import from Access, chose the Department table, and everything popped into Excel. BUT, the Manager Name column is showing Manager ID instead. So I have a list of numbers instead of names. How can I make Excel show what I see in Access? Thanks!

How to Add the Windows Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar in Microsoft Excel 2013

Do you use the Windows Calculator to perform quick calculations while building spreadsheets in Excel? You can save time by adding the Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar in Excel so you don’t have to leave the program to access the Calculator. To do this, click the down arrow on the right side of the Quick Access Toolbar and select More Commands from the drop-down menu. On the Quick Access Toolbar screen on the Excel Options dialog box, select Commands Not in the Ribbon from the Choose commands from drop-down list. Scroll down in the long list and select Calculator. Click Add to add the Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar. Click OK to accept the change and close the Excel Options dialog box. You’ll see a Calculator icon on the Quick Access Toolbar. When you move your mouse over the icon, a hint displays saying “Custom.” Despite the label, when you click the icon, the Windows Calculator opens. The same procedure works for adding the Windows Calculator to Excel 2010, as well.

How does Microsoft Word And Excel Run without any installation?

I was having a discussion on bookmarks in Word with a friend, and he suggested me to check out his implementation of a query in Word. Since I did not have Microsoft Word installed, I told him I don't have Word so I won't be able to test it. To this, he mentioned that he'll send the executables and it will work - I argued that without an installation this will fail. I was rather shocked when he sent me the standalone executables and on running them, Word actually launched and I was able to use almost every functionality o_0 How's this possible? I've never installed Microsoft Office on my system, this isn't any "portable" app or VMWare ThinStall ( thanks nhinkle, didn't know about this). There are absolutely no Microsoft Office related files - except for winword.exe and excel.exe. Curiously even Microsoft Excel works fine with just the standalone executable. winword.exe size is about 38 MB, and excel.exe size is just 35kb, which makes it even more strange. I'm running on Windows XP, the files were from Office 2003. I was discussing this on Chat prior to posting, here's the conversation

All, I am getting the error on the console at the last phase of the installation: Installation failed. Failed to receive heartbeat from agent Server Log: 2012-12-19 00:32:12,132 INFO [NodeConfiguratorThread-4- 0:node.NodeConfiguratorProgress@503] 192.168.1.100: Setting WAIT_FOR_HEARTBEAT as failed and done state All nodes (name node and (2)client nodes) are VM's running 64bit CentOS. sshd has been enabled on all nodes, and VM's are set to Bridge. Any clue on how to fix this error?

It seems like most airlines that offer in flight wireless these days use GoGo. They offer different pricing for mobile and laptops. It seems like they are checking the browser's user agent. Out of curiosity, is it possible to use a Firefox extension like this one to spoof the user-agent and allow a laptop to access the internet under a GoGo mobile plan? How would GoGo handle something like an IMAP email client, like Thunderbird. Do IMAP clients have a user-agent field as well that would normally identify whether the mail client is running on a laptop or mobile device?

Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please. We need to run a daily job using SQL Server Agent (SQL 2000) but we don't want it to run on the 22nd of each month as there are other processes which only run on that day which will clash. The recurring settings in Agent do not provide any exclusion options - is there any way to achieve this?

Decoding the IE9 user agent

I installed IE9 in a Windows 7 virtual machine, and was surprised to see this user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0; BOIE9;ENUSMSNIP) In particular, the last two keys BOIE9 and ENUSMSNIP look very spammy. I'm used to seeing toolbars and add-ins register themselves at the end of the user agent like that, but this is on a virgin install of Windows 7 with no other software. They're defined in the registry here: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\PostPlatform That key has a value of IEAK, which is apparently the Internet Explorer Administrators Kit which according to Microsoft sends a custom user agent string. But why? I'm guessing that BOIE9 is stands for "Bing on IE9". It's the only active Add-On: As for ENUSMSNIP, I'm at a loss. My guesses are: ENUS = Locale, which for me is EN-US ("US English") MS = Microsoft NIP = ??? I tried changing my locale to EN-GB, but the user agent didn't update nor did the registry. So it appears it's only at the time of install that it matters (if I'm even right about ENUS). Does anyone know what these two user agent keys represent? Or, care to share what your IE9 user agent is, and maybe we can piece it together ourselves?
