    How can someone who joins an existing Microsoft Communicator chat see the history of what has gone before? For example: Larry: [describes problem] Moe: [enhances problem] Curly: We should ask Shemp [Shemp joins] Shemp: What's going on in this thread? Is there any way for Shemp to see what Larry and Moe have already typed? I have tried copy-pasting the whole thing, but that invokes an error with no error message - possibly "too much text."

    We often want to make quick announcements to our group of 20 people using Office Communicator, so we highlight a group of contacts and start a new IM session. However, only a maximum of 10 people are able to join the conversation; after the maximum number of people join, all other invitees get the message: Cannot connect to the conference because it is full. Contact the conference leader for more information. Is there a way to increase the maximum number of participants?

  • Lubuntu upgrade to 13.04 killed sound with ALSA. How to troubleshoot?

    After upgrading to 13.04 from 12.10 Lubuntu lost audio playback after unplugging usb soundcard (Polycom) and plugging it back in. Volume control was gray and leading to pulseaudio mixer (not installed) so I uninstalled the pulseaudio package. I also removed and reinstalled the alsa-base package. UPDATE: I removed the usb soundcard and got rid of all alsa config. Everything is working as before the install but it sure feels fragile.

    I am using Microsoft Office Communicator with a USB headset as my work phone. OCS is connected to our PABX so we can take and make calls to regular, non-OCS phones. When making an external call to a cellphone, it can take up to 5-10 seconds for audio to start flowing. eg: Work Phone Cellphone - dial cellphone (ringing) (ringing) answer cellphone (hearing nothing) speak "1" . speak "2" . speak "3" . ... . speak "14" hear "15" speak "15" hear "16" speak "16" Has anyone experienced this kind of thing with an OCS setup? Any pointers?

  • Office Communicator and cannot sync Address book error

    We are trying to get OCS 2007 R2 up and running. The clients login fine, but when I let it sit for a while, we still get the address book sync error message of: "Cannot synchronize with the corporate address book. This may be because the proxy server setting in your web browser does not allow access to the address book. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator". When I try and download the file locally, this error comes up: Could not load file or assembly 'ABServerHttpHandler, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission requests. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131417) I googled and came across this post (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/ocsaddressbook/thread/c28ff2d8-66a4-456c-a5ad-e445a667e8ed) which suggests removing and reinstalling .NET 2.0 but that didn't seem to resolve the issue either. When we run abserver.exe -validateDB it works properly. We even tried the suggestion from Greg's Blog (http://blogs.technet.com/greganth/archive/2009/03/11/office-communicator-notifications-cannot-synchronize-address-book.aspx) about restarting the web component services but that didn't work either. Still seeing the same issue. So does anyone have an idea of where we go from here?

    Just wondering does anyone know of a free/open source tool that take a Microsoft project file and export it to HTML? I know you can save a project file as HTML, so wanted a tool that would do this automatically? Maybe also displaying graphs/gantt chart as well? If not, any ideas of how I would write a program to do this, preferably in java? I know of Aspose.Tasks (http://www.aspose.com/categories/.net-components/aspose.tasks-for-.net/default.aspx), which can export projects files to gantt charts in png format, but it's not free and is only available in C#.

  • When importing an Access table into Excel, a look-up column is showing all values as numbers

    I have a basic Access to Excel question that has me frustrated. I have two Access 2010 data tables. One is a list of managers. The primary key is a manager ID (which is an autonumber because managers can have the same name), and each row also has manager name, manager email, etc. The second data table is a list of departments. The primary key for each row is a unique department code, and the foreign key is a manager ID (autonumber). I used the Look-up Wizard to create this connection. However, Access does not show the manager ID in the foreign key location. It shows Manager Name like I requested when I used the Look-up Wizard. Now I am trying to import the second table (departments) into Excel 2010. I clicked import from Access, chose the Department table, and everything popped into Excel. BUT, the Manager Name column is showing Manager ID instead. So I have a list of numbers instead of names. How can I make Excel show what I see in Access? Thanks!

  • How to Add the Windows Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar in Microsoft Excel 2013

    Do you use the Windows Calculator to perform quick calculations while building spreadsheets in Excel? You can save time by adding the Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar in Excel so you don’t have to leave the program to access the Calculator. To do this, click the down arrow on the right side of the Quick Access Toolbar and select More Commands from the drop-down menu. On the Quick Access Toolbar screen on the Excel Options dialog box, select Commands Not in the Ribbon from the Choose commands from drop-down list. Scroll down in the long list and select Calculator. Click Add to add the Calculator to the Quick Access Toolbar. Click OK to accept the change and close the Excel Options dialog box. You’ll see a Calculator icon on the Quick Access Toolbar. When you move your mouse over the icon, a hint displays saying “Custom.” Despite the label, when you click the icon, the Windows Calculator opens. The same procedure works for adding the Windows Calculator to Excel 2010, as well.

  • How does Microsoft Word And Excel Run without any installation?

    I was having a discussion on bookmarks in Word with a friend, and he suggested me to check out his implementation of a query in Word. Since I did not have Microsoft Word installed, I told him I don't have Word so I won't be able to test it. To this, he mentioned that he'll send the executables and it will work - I argued that without an installation this will fail. I was rather shocked when he sent me the standalone executables and on running them, Word actually launched and I was able to use almost every functionality o_0 How's this possible? I've never installed Microsoft Office on my system, this isn't any "portable" app or VMWare ThinStall ( thanks nhinkle, didn't know about this). There are absolutely no Microsoft Office related files - except for winword.exe and excel.exe. Curiously even Microsoft Excel works fine with just the standalone executable. winword.exe size is about 38 MB, and excel.exe size is just 35kb, which makes it even more strange. I'm running on Windows XP, the files were from Office 2003. I was discussing this on Chat prior to posting, here's the conversation

  • Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

    A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please.   • How can I modify the "Picture Styles" shortcut gallery in Microsoft Office (Word and Powerpoint, specifically)?

    The Microsoft Office Ribbon has a convenient gallery of styles to apply to pictures, shown here. It functions much like the Quick Styles gallery in Word for quickly applying formatting to text. But whereas one can create a new text style and add it to the Quick Styles gallery, I haven't been able to find a way to do the same with the Picture Styles gallery. The default styles aren't what I need, and the styles I do need involve changing multiple settings, so a shortcut would be nice. Am I stuck just using the copy-paste format options?

  • Microsoft releases Bing iPhone app

    As its officials have been hinting and promising for a while now, Microsoft announced it has developed a version of its Bing search app for the iPhone. The new Bing app is available on the iPhone app store as of tonight (December 15). Microsoft already offers Bing on a number of mobile phones, and has a five-year deal with Verizon to provide Bing on a number of phones available to Verizon Wireless customers. A mobile version of Bing already is available for Windows Mobile, Blackberry, BREW and Sidekick devices on Verizon. In other Bing news, Microsoft has finally hit the 10 percent market share mark with Bing, according to the November U.S. search share data from comScore. Bing’s growth is continuing to come at the expense of Yahoo, not Google. Update: To those wondering why Microsoft would deliver a version of Continue... span.fullpost {display:none;}
