  • Newbie worried about CASE tool.

    Hi there. I'm looking for some guidance on CASE tools and whether my concerns are valid. Recently I was in a meeting between my employer and an external software company which have a CASE tool currently in beta. They demonstrated this tool to us, showing how you build a UML model in Enterprise Architect (or something like it) and then, through their tool, that UML model is transformed into a Visual Studio project, with C# files, stored procedures for SQL Server, code for the data layer, WCF stuff, logging code and allsorts. Now, admittedly, I don't see the point in this, as in I'm not convinced it will save that much time (plus it feels like overkill). The tool authors said that a trial of the tool at another company had saved a team there 5 weeks of development time (from 6 weeks down to about 1 week) using this tool. I find the accuracy of that estimate hard to believe. My main concern is whether using this tool is going slow down my productivity. For example - Say I have a UML model which I built a VS solution from. Now, I want to rename a class method to something else; will this mean having to update the UML model first and then rebuilding the code? Is this how case tools normally work? Something I will need to check with the authors is the structure of the generated VS solution. I like the Domain Driven Design way of project structure - Infrstructure, Services, Model, etc. I doubt very much this tool will do that. Also, I've been playing around with Entity Framework Code First and think it's a great way to build the data model. I have nice repositories, unit of work classes and other design patterns that work well with EF. I have data anootations and stuff like that working great. By not having EF (the CASE tool uses it's own data layer code) I'm concerned that this tool's data layer code might not be a nice to integrate in the UoW pattern, repositories, etc. This I will need to verify when I get a closer look at the generated code. What are other people's experiences with CASE tools? Am I being paranoid about nothing? Am I being unfair - are my negativities unfounded? EDIT: I like to use TDD/BDD for building my code, and using a CASE tool looks like it will make this difficult. Again, any feedback on this would be great. Cheers. Jas.

  • Newbie seeking advice on programming in general

    need some of you to remember back to a time when you might have been bad at programming... Been at my new job (as a software developer) for a couple of months now, passed probation period. Have very little programming experience (C++ only) and am currently working with asp.net MVC and silverlight. So there's a website the company has been working on and I am joining the effort to make it better, iron out bugs etc. The problem is - learning about a system/website which has already been made, via visual studio. I ALWAYS feel HUGELY overwhelmed, never knowing which part of this line should I look up, and generally having lots of trouble getting the big picture. Visual studio itself is something I'm finding it difficult to get to grips with, let alone the asp.net framework. I get the impression that because my coworkers have more experience than me, they are getting all the good jobs, and I am left with crap to do - stuff which is not even vaguely programming. Meaning they are learning/creating more, and I am learning/creating near nothing. I'm getting demoralised, and too scared to say anything. I'm not stupid, I've read and practiced plenty of the fundamental programming concepts...I'm just bloody scared of this damn framework. I look at it and just feel paralyzed. The result is that I keep asking the older veteran guy of questions, and he is getting irritated, and would rather give me easy/mindless/non programming jobs to avoid wasting time with helping me out. Then when I don't understand something, I'm hesitating about whether or not I should ask him yet, and trying to decide if it would be a waste of time. I'm the kind of person who picks things up slowly, but with a lot of attention to detail. The former I think is making me look incompetent though. Anyone get where I'm coming from please say something helpful....I'm scared of losing my job in a few months or something...

  • SharePoint For Newbie Developers: Code Scope

    So, I continue to try to come up with diagrams and information to help new SharePoint developers wrap their heads around this SharePoint beast, especially when those newer to development are on my team. To that end, I drew up the below diagram to help some of our junior devs understand where/when code is being executed in SharePoint at a high level. Note that I say “High Level”… This is a simplistic diagram that can get a LOT more complicated if you want to dive in deeper.  For the purposes of my lesson it served its purpose well. So, please no comments from you peanut gallery about information 3 levels down that’s missing unless it adds to the discussion.  Thanks So, the diagram below details where code is executed on a page load and gives the basic flow of the page load. There are actually many more steps, but again, we are staying high level here. I just know someone is still going to say something like “Well.. actually… the dlls are getting executed when…”  Anyway, here’s the diagram with some information I like to point out: Code Scope / Where it is executed So, looking at the diagram we see that dlls and XSL are executed on the server and that JavaScript/jQuery are executed on the client. This is the main thing I like to point out for the following reasons: XSL (for the most part) is faster than JavaScript I actually get this question a lot. Since XSL is executed on the server less data is getting passed over the wire and a beefier machine (hopefully) is doing the processing. The outcome of course is better performance. When You are using jQuery and making Web Service calls you are building XML strings and sending them to the server, then ALL the results come back and the client machine has to parse through the XML and use what it needs and ignore the rest (and there is a lot of garbage that comes back from SharePoint Web Service calls). XSL and JavaScript cannot work together in the same scope Let me clarify. JavaScript can send data back to SharePoint in postbacks that XSL can then use. XSL can output JavaScript and initiate JavaScript variables.  However, XSL cannot call a JavaScript method to get a value and JavaScript cannot directly interact with XSL and call its templates. They are executed in there scope only. No crossing of boundaries here. So, what does this all mean? Well, nothing too deep. This is just some basic fundamental information that all SharePoint devs need to understand. It will help you determine what is the best solution for your specific development situation and it will help the new guys understand why they get an error when trying to call a JavaScript Function from within XSL.  Let me know if you think quick little blogs like this are helpful or just add to the noise.     So, I just got a new computer and I want to put Ubuntu on my old laptop. I just need few tips before installing it. 1.Programs, where to download, how to download, what is the "ending" (windows has .exe) 2. How much is command line involved? And where to get the most usual commands? 3.Few programs you recommend (graphics editing, IDE, video player, web browser) 4. Do I have to download drivers when installing new OS? I plan on getting fully rid of Windows. I have no idea of the name of my graphics card, so how do I can get to know what it is if I have to download drivers? (I don't know the name because it's not on the original box, or anywhere on the internet, believe me) 5. When installing new OS does it destroy everything else on the hard drive? 6. Anti-virus, do I need one? I'm not super paranoid, and I don't visit "shady" sites. Please note that I have never used linux, or any other OS than Windows and sorry for my bad english.   • Newbie needs to learn basic file management

    I have been using Ubuntu for abut 2 weeks and and still frustrated by simple file operations. I want to find a file called 9.jpg. Every internal command 3-rd party program I have tried also gives me 99.jpg, 999.jpg, lovepotion number9.jpg and a zillion other similar ones. How do you search for an EXACT file name WITHOUT wildcards? This is only my most recent frustration. I'm obviously missing something basic. good tutorial anywhere?

    I am learning ASP.Net and I am confusing between ASP.Net WebPages, ASP.Net WebForms and ASP.Net MVC. I have read a lot of articles and known the simple difference of their functions, but I don't know the differences of their code. E.g: When I look at int* p = new int(); ... I know that it's C++ style. and Dim A as String it have to be Visual Basic. [?1] I'm not able to detect like that in ASP.Net. How do they different in codes? I use Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition.I like to use C# (I also was learned VisualBasic in shool, but I don't like him). I have done the Java scripting and stuff . What I don't get is the logic to it. I actually need it done with Javascript, I have had done the necessary but I'm confused with the logic to generate such series (with the user given values) I had actually used two for loops to generate the regular number series like below 1 1 2 1 2 3 and so on.

  • Working hours for a newbie

    This is not a very related software / hardware question, but it's too related to the Tech world. I started a work 3 months before, and I am about to finish this week, and my boss asked me to do a planning of what I've done so far, I think this is totally ok, but he is asking for what I did each day with the hours I spent in these days. This is a sample of what I sent him M T W T F week 29/06 to 03/07 compréhension et analyse du problématique * * architecture de l'application * * * which translates to first task, I spent Monday + Tuesday on, and the last W, T, and Friday. What he is asking for, is what I've done in each day, with the timing I spent on (obviously, I don't think I remember, and because for a programmer, there are no sequence tasks, I mean I change code in a class, then change it in another to fit with the new one and so far) So my question is: is what he asking normal? and if so how can I detail the planning for the 3 months. [update] I used the email account we use to test our software with the extern servers, and I got a good view of what I was doing in every day :), a generic view but it helped too much (PS: The boss doesn't know anything about programming, for him, it's like writing lines and get results back nothing more )

    Hi, I have just installed the trial version of Lotus Domino and now I'm pulling my hair out as for some stupid reason I can't find the Domino Administrator client. I have found multiple suggestions on various websites where to download it from, but all of them lead to the same section of the IBM website which actually only has the Lotus Notes client, despite the page title. What am I missing here and where do I find the client? Thank you.

  • PowerShell: New-PSDrive error handling

    Hello, I have a script where I mount with the command "New-PSDrive" a network drive. Now, since the script is running as a "cronjob" on a server I want to have some error detection. If for any reason the command New-PSDrive fails the script should stop executing and notify that something went wrong. I have the following code: Try { New-PSDrive -Name A -PSProvider FileSystem -Root \\server\share } Catch { ... handle error case ... } ... other code ... For testing reasons I specified a wrong server name and I get the following error "New-PSDrive : Drive root "\wrongserver\share" does not exist or it's not a folder". Which is OK since the server does not exists. But the script does not go into the Catch clause and stop. It happily continues to run and ends up in a mess since no drive is mounted :-) So my question, why? Is there any difference in Exception handling in PowerShell? I should also note that I'm a noob in PowerShell scripting. Bye, Martin

  • OpenVZ multiple networks on CTs

    I have Hardware Node (HN) which has 2 physical interfaces (eth0, eth1). I'm playing with OpenVZ and want to let my containers (CTs) have access to both of those interfaces. I'm using basic configuration - venet. CTs are fine to access eth0 (public interface). But I can't get CTs to get access to eth1 (private network). I tried: # on HN vzctl set 101 --ipadd 192.168.1.101 --save vzctl enter 101 ping 192.168.1.2 # no response here ifconfig # on CT returns lo (127.0.0.1), venet0 (127.0.0.1), venet0:0 (95.168.xxx.xxx), venet0:1 (192.168.1.101) I believe that the main problem is that all packets flows through eth0 on HN (figured out using tcpdump). So the problem might be in routes on HN. Or is my logic here all wrong? I just need access to both interfaces (networks) on HN from CTs. Nothing complicated.

  • adding or routing additional domain email addresses

    We have exchange 2007 and we bought a new domain name and we're still keeping the old one so that we can wean everyone off of the old emails. Now, I'm wondering how to go about this. I need to add the new domain as accepted and authoritative by the exchange server. Emails on the new domain need to get routed to the inbox and ditto the old emails, however, I want to be able to change the reply-to in the header to the new email address automatically. I also want to set the new email addresses as the defaults. Ideally, I'd like to be able to add a message at the bottom of every externally outgoing email saying that the new email is [email protected]. But this is a nice to have, certainly not a must have. I've added the new domain as authoritative, and managed to change the primary smtp email addresses to the new one, but sent emails are not being routed to them and neither are the old email addresses! Now how the heck would I go about fixing all of that? I'm completely stumped! TIA

  • IP-dependent local port-forwarding on Linux

    I have configured my server's sshd to listen on a non-standard port 42. However, at work I am behind a firewall/proxy, which only allow outgoing connections to ports 21, 22, 80 and 443. Consequently, I cannot ssh to my server from work, which is bad. I do not want to return sshd to port 22. The idea is this: on my server, locally forward port 22 to port 42 if source IP is matching the external IP of my work's network. For clarity, let us assume that my server's IP is 169.1.1.1 (on eth1), and my work external IP is 169.250.250.250. For all IPs different from 169.250.250.250, my server should respond with an expected 'connection refused', as it does for a non-listening port. I'm very new to iptables. I have briefly looked through the long iptables manual and these related / relevant questions: http://serverfault.com/questions/57872/iptables-question-forwarding-port-x-to-an-ssh-port-of-different-machine-on-the-n http://serverfault.com/questions/140622/how-can-i-port-forward-with-iptables However, those questions deal with more complicated several-host scenarios, and it is not clear to me which tables and chains I should use for local port-forwarding, and if I should have 2 rules (for "question" and "answer" packets), or only 1 rule for "question" packets. So far I have only enabled forwarding via sysctl. I will start testing solutions tomorrow, and will appreciate pointers or maybe case-specific examples for implementing my simple scenario. Is the draft solution below correct? iptables -A INPUT [-m state] [-i eth1] --source 169.250.250.250 -p tcp --destination 169.1.1.1:42 --dport 22 --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT Should I use the mangle table instead of filter? And/or FORWARD chain instead of INPUT?

  • how to go about scaling a web-application ?

    for someone whoes been primarily a web-application developer, and know not much about scaling/scalability techniques. I'll start by stating my application is written in Python, using Django; a fairly standard setup. I currently use Apache 2.2 for my webserver, and MySql for my database server; both running on the same vps server. Up until now, it was basically a prototype and merely 15-30 concurrent users at any given time; so I had no issues, but now since we'll be adding more users we'll have severe performance issues. So my question is how do i go about scaling my web-application? and my plan is as follows. Now I have just one vps server running, apache + mysql. Next, I plan to add another vps server, to run only MySql; so i'll have one web-server and one db server. Next, I'll add Memcache to the webserver for caching data; and taking some load off mysql. Next, another web-server for serving all the static content; Next, a vps server for load-balancing (nginx/varnish) behind which would be my two web-servers and then db-server. Does that sound like a workable strategy, please guide me around here.

  • Linux file server for an inexperienced admin

    A charity I volunteer for wants a file server for their mostly Windows machines (about five XP and 7 machines, with some Mac laptops every now and then). For the server, I have a PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo 3GHz proc, 4GB of DDR2 400MHz RAM, and a 500 GB HDD. (I should point out that they do not currently have any server - they are just using Windows to share a folder on one of the PCs.) What is a linux distro that is easy to configure for Windows file serving yet stable and secure enough to protect sensitive data without an expert sysadmin? I'm guessing that a Debian distro would probably fit the security bill, but I don't know of any tailored to novice sysadmins. Also, are there any killer apps for making this easy to administer and set up (as a Windows file server, in particular - this answer is a good example)? Would FreeNAS be sufficient? Once it's all set up, what are the minimum measures I need to take to keep the data secure? I found this somewhat helpful answer, but it's not specific to my question of just getting a secure file server up, running, and maintained.
