• Problems with tk85.dll when shutting down an application that embeds the Python interpreter.

  My C++ application embeds the Python interpreter, but seems to be having some trouble when it shuts down. Right after the main window closes, I get a segmentation fault (this is Windows, but we'll call it a segmentation fault anyway). • Can C++ do something like an ML case expression?

  So, I've run into this sort of thing a few times in C++ where I'd really like to write something like case (a,b,c,d) of (true, true, _, _ ) => expr | (false, true, _, false) => expr | ... • bash command for each file in a folder

  I have a set of files on which I would like to apply the same command and the output should contain the same name as the processed file but with a different extension. Currently I am doing rename /my/data/Andrew.doc to /my/data/Andrew.txt I would like to do this for all the .doc files from the /my/data/ folder and to preserve the name. I tried several versions but I guess I have something wrong in the syntax as I an new to linux.

• Tokyo Tyrant ulog / update log management.

  I'm testing Tokyo Tyrant in a master-master setup and have found the ulog grows out of control and locks up the disk. At first I found the -ulim option useful and limited the logfile size, however it simply rolls over to a new log, leaving the old ones to clutter up the partition. I suppose I'll write a shell script that will delete ulogs older than X, once I find out how far back Tokyo Tyrant needs in the update log in order to failover. Does anyone have any experience with this Tokyo Tyrant? Do you have a feel (acknowledging that every install is different based on what is being stored) for the optimal ulog size vs how far back a Tokyo Tyrant instance needs to look in the ulog to assume master status? • Windows XP won't boot after drive transplant

  Hi all, I moved my hard drive from my Lenovo laptop into my Asus Eee PC netbook. When I started the netbook, after POST all I got was a black screen with a cursor in the upper left corner. I thought that the migration should work OK because this was a 32-bit version of Windows XP, and the Atom processor in the Asus should support the x86 instruction set. However, I don't know much about Windows, so maybe this was a dumb thought. I did verify that the BIOS can find the drive. It required major surgery to replace the drive, so any solution requiring me to remove the transplant drive is not going to fly. Keeping in mind that the netbook has no optical drive and that I have no other Windows computers (all my other computers run Linux), is there any way I can fix this problem? Thanks! Nathan

• Blinking cursor after repair install on Win XP

  I have an Asus Eee PC netbook which I upgraded the drive of. After some shenanigans, I was able to do a repair install from my Windows XP CD. However, I still have a blinking cursor in the upper-left-hand corner after POST. I tried going into the recovery console and doing chkdsk/fixboot/fixmbr with no effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated! (Sorry if it's inappropriate to post a followup as a new question; I'm not sure how I should do it in a way that will cause it to actually be seen). • Rails ActiveRecord: Select Posts WITHOUT comments

  I have a a Comments table and a Posts table, where a Post has many comments and a comment belongs to a post (i.e. it has a post_id in the table). How can I efficiently select the last ten Posts that DO NOT have comments. I can't seem to accomplish this without first selecting all the posts and checking each for a 0 comment count. • Ethernet switch capacity question

  We're looking at hooking up 48 small embedded systems with 10/100 Ethernet ports to an Ethernet switch and then have that switch talk to a server upstream via a faster connection. I have a couple of questions about that scenario: What kind of upstream connection is best (fiber, other?) Would it be reasonable to download 1GB/hour from each of the 48 systems concurrently? • Ubuntu and Belkin N150 f6d4050 Wireless USB adapter v2

  I'm new to Ubuntu, and I'm trying to get my Belkin USB adapter to work. There are plenty of discussions out there already about this, but none really helped me out. Here's what I've done - Installed ndiswrapper Installed ndisgtk Installed the driver (rt2870.inf) via ndisgtk ndisgtk reported that the driver was installed and the hardware was present. The green light on the adapter is solid green, which I assume means that Ubuntu is aware of it's presence. However, when I click the little wireless symbol at the navigation bar, there's no option to choose my adapter (assuming that it's supposed to show up there...) • Where does $PATH get set in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

  I type echo $PATH on the command line and get /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty. I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install. • Handheld Linux device can't see one wireless network

  I'm using a Nokia N810 running OS 2008 (version 5.2008.43-7; should be the latest). It can see networks up and down the street in my neighborhood and can connect to mine using WEP. I can also connect to free networks at restaurants and the like. When I bring it into work, it can't see a wireless network ("No connections available"). When I use netstumbler on my laptop I can see a list of several essids showing green connectivity for the network. I know that the network has its essid broadcast, and I know that it's unsecured. When I run iwlist wlan0 scan, I see several APs with no essid, but I don't see anything with an essid set. I have verified using iwlist that my hardware supports the correct channels and speeds. I know this isn't a Nokia/mobile forum, but it's running what's basically a Debian kernel. Any suggestions on what to do in this case? I'm really frustrated by this. Thanks, Nathan

• Django inlineformset validation and delete

  Hi, Can someone tell me if a form in an inlineformset should go through validation if the DELETE field is checked. I have a form that uses an inlineformset and when I check the DELETE box it fails because the required fields are blank. If I put data in the fields it will pass validation and then be deleted. Is that how it is supposed to work, I would have thought that if it is marked for delete it would bypass the validation for that form. Regards Andrew Follow up - but I would still appreciate some others opinions/help What I have figured out is that for validation to work the a formset form must either be empty or complete(valid) otherwise it will have errors when it is created and will not be deleted. As I have a couple of hidden fields in my formset forms and they are pre-populated when the page loads via javascript the form fails validation on the other required fields which might still be blank. The way I have gotten around this by adding in a check in the add_fields that tests if the DELETE input is True and if it is it makes all fields on the form not required, which means it passes validation and will then delete. def add_fields(self, form, index) #add other fields that are required.... deleteValue = form.fields['DELETE'].widget.value_from datadict(form.data, form.files, form.add_prefix('DELETE')) if bool(deleteValue) or deleteValue == '': for name, field in form.fields.items(): form.fields[name].required= False This seems to be an odd way to do things but I cannot figure out another way. Is there a simpler way that I am missing? I have also noticed that when I add the new form to my page and check the Delete box, there is no value passed back via the request, however an existing form (one loaded from the database) has a value of on when the Delete box is checked.   I've been messing around with the SQLite Designer in Visual Studio 2008 and I have noticed that when I use the generated Insert/Update statements they run extremely slow. Example: I have a data table with four columns and 5700 rows it took ~5 mins to insert the data into the database table However, I wrote my own database connection and insert methods using parameters and a single transaction and the same 5700 rows were inserted in under 1 second. Why is the generated code so slow and what is benefit to even using it? Thanks. Nathan

• Horizontal Scrolling Flash Game/Large Horizontal Scene

  Hello, I'm currently learning Flash (CS4, AS3) and am creating a game. I have currently 1 flv file with 4 scenes, I then move from left to right and then to scene 2 and go from left to right. This is the game where items pop up that need to be clicked on and you get points. Is there any way I can combine these onto 1 scene? Flash only allows you to have a maximum of 2880px wide. The reason for this is the transition between the scenes is RUBBISH and that my AS is not working correctly in between scenes (it loses values). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Nathan

• Windows update error: Code 80072F8F (possibly datetime-not-correct, but it is)

  I have a Windows 2008 Server 64bit installation running as a virtual instance with a hosting provider. Windows Update has worked fine until IE8 (along with some other updates) managed to get installed (don't get me started). Now all of a sudden Windows Update fails to run and complains with error 80072F8F. UPDATE: I've since removed IE8 and am still having issues (tissues are on order) This apparently means that the time/timezone of the server is incorrect - which is not the case. I've synced the time with a time server and rebooted a number of times. I've followed the instructions here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929458) to no avail. Thanks! Andrew

• Ideas for scaling out database architecture

  We're looking to scale out our existing database architecture and need some advice on which way to go. We currently have 2 web servers behind a load balancer that both read & write to a single master database which replicates to a slave. Ideally, I'd like each of the webservers to point to their own master DB and have the data between the 2 synchronised but from what I've read, using any kind of master-master or ring-replication is discouraged. I'm looking for a general "what do other people do" kind of answer - database vendor isn't a concern at the moment but we'd like to stay with MySQL or convert to MSSQL. • Domains propagation issues.

  Hello to all. I got very strange issue, really weird. On weekend, May 9th I changed my server location from US to UK. Of course, everything works correctly excluding domains. There's something wrong. I got few domains on this server but I still cannot access them. When I try from the other location it works correctly. The most funny situation is that everything is working correctly from my girlfriend's work, about 500 meters from our house, but they have another ISP. It also works when I access the domains via proxy server. I checked who.is informations and everything seems to be working. On Sunday and today morning I was able to access my domains but only for a while. When I refreshed website second time I got error "Firefox was not able to connect server". Since then I'm still getting this error. Could it be my ISP fault? Regards, Andrew
