  • APNS Sending Frequent Notifications to Device

    I'm trying to mimic a pager with my app by sending push notifications to the user until he or she responds. My thought was to send a push every few seconds and play the default sound on arrival. Not perfect, but better than nothing. It's working all right. However, I am finding that the sound starts to stutter/interrupt a bit after a few notifications have been sent -- as if it's trying to play the sound more than once. This happens even if I only send the push every 10 seconds. I just tested it at 20 second intervals and even then it starts to sound interrupted after about 10 times. Any idea how to resolve this so each message plays the sound crisply? p.s. Testing performed on an iPad.

  • Notify-osd notifications appear unthemed in top-left corner (ubuntu 13.10)

    Problem I recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and suddenly notification bubbles don't appear themed as usual in the upper right corner, but they appear as white text on blue background in the upper-left corner. It looks like this: Unsuccesful attempts to fix it I tried reinstalling unity, notify-osd, ubuntu-desktop removed notification-daemon which was installed, none of that fixes it. In fact running ps aux | grep notify-osd shows that notify-osd isn't even running. But when I try to start it manually by running /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/notify-osd I get: ** (notify-osd:4618): WARNING **: Another instance has already registered org.freedesktop.Notifications ** (notify-osd:4618): WARNING **: Could not register instance If I understand well, the instance is registered by the /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service file, which right now contains: [D-BUS Service] Name=org.freedesktop.Notifications Exec=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/notify-osd Renaming or deleting that file (and rebooting) has no effect whatsoever (and it is not recreated automatically). This is not a duplicate of No notifications from notify-osd on 13.10 (and by the way I purged gnome-flashback-session along with notification-daemon) Question(s) How can I debug this? How can I get notifications to come back to normal? If additional debug information is needed, I'll be happy to add it (just that I can't find any more).

  • Project Hamster notifications missing on upgrade to 12.04

    I have upgraded from an almost default 11.10 install to 12.04. All went well and I can login, logout, etc. without any problem. One very interesting thing about the Project Hamster notifications, though. I have set Hamster to remind after every 27 mins. I do not get these notifications. However, if there is no activity set, I see the notification. In 11.10, I used to get both the notifications. What is wrong? How do I set it right? By the way, the notifications work quite well in Unity. But in Gnome, the problem continues.

    Hello, I recently found this very interesting article on APNS and Emoji characters: EASY APNS - Just for fun It contains a list with all supported Emojis. However, I couldn't get them to display in my push notifications. All I get is the code, not the image. For example, if I add \ue415 (a smiley) to my message, I never see the image, just the code. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

  • iOS Support with Windows Azure Mobile Services – now with Push Notifications

    A few weeks ago I posted about a number of improvements to Windows Azure Mobile Services. One of these was the addition of an Objective-C client SDK that allows iOS developers to easily use Mobile Services for data and authentication.  Today I'm excited to announce a number of improvement to our iOS SDK and, most significantly, our new support for Push Notifications via APNS (Apple Push Notification Services).  This makes it incredibly easy to fire push notifications to your iOS users from Windows Azure Mobile Service scripts. Push Notifications via APNS We've provided two complete tutorials that take you step-by-step through the provisioning and setup process to enable your Windows Azure Mobile Service application with APNS (Apple Push Notification Services), including all of the steps required to configure your application for push in the Apple iOS provisioning portal: Getting started with Push Notifications - iOS Push notifications to users by using Mobile Services - iOS Once you've configured your application in the Apple iOS provisioning portal and uploaded the APNS push certificate to the Apple provisioning portal, it's just a matter of uploading your APNS push certificate to Mobile Services using the Windows Azure admin portal: Clicking the “upload” within the “Push” tab of your Mobile Service allows you to browse your local file-system and locate/upload your exported certificate.  As part of this you can also select whether you want to use the sandbox (dev) or production (prod) Apple service: Now, the code to send a push notification to your clients from within a Windows Azure Mobile Service is as easy as the code below: push.apns.send(deviceToken, {      alert: 'Toast: A new Mobile Services task.',      sound: 'default' }); This will cause Windows Azure Mobile Services to connect to APNS (Apple Push Notification Service) and send a notification to the iOS device you specified via the deviceToken: Check out our reference documentation for full details on how to use the new Windows Azure Mobile Services apns object to send your push notifications. Feedback Scripts An important part of working with any PNS (Push Notification Service) is handling feedback for expired device tokens and channels. This typically happens when your application is uninstalled from a particular device and can no longer receive your notifications. With Windows Notification Services you get an instant response from the HTTP server.  Apple’s Notification Services works in a slightly different way and provides an additional endpoint you can connect to poll for a list of expired tokens. As with all of the capabilities we integrate with Mobile Services, our goal is to allow developers to focus more on building their app and less on building infrastructure to support their ideas. Therefore we knew we had to provide a simple way for developers to integrate feedback from APNS on a regular basis.  This week’s update now includes a new screen in the portal that allows you to optionally provide a script to process your APNS feedback – and it will be executed by Mobile Services on an ongoing basis: This script is invoked periodically while your service is active. To poll the feedback endpoint you can simply call the apns object's getFeedback method from within this script: push.apns.getFeedback({       success: function(results) {           // results is an array of objects with a deviceToken and time properties      } }); This returns you a list of invalid tokens that can now be removed from your database. iOS Client SDK improvements Over the last month we've continued to work with a number of iOS advisors to make improvements to our Objective-C SDK. The SDK is being developed under an open source license (Apache 2.0) and is available on github. Many of the improvements are behind the scenes to improve performance and memory usage. However, one of the biggest improvements to our iOS Client API is the addition of an even easier login method.  Below is the Objective-C code you can now write to invoke it: [client loginWithProvider:@"twitter"                     onController:self                        animated:YES                      completion:^(MSUser *user, NSError *error) {      // if no error, you are now logged in via twitter }]; This code will automatically present and dismiss our login view controller as a modal dialog on the specified controller.  This does all the hard work for you and makes login via Twitter, Google, Facebook and Microsoft Account identities just a single line of code.   • Desktop Notifications, aka Internal Alert System

    It has become apparent that where I work needs, internally, a "notification system". The issue being that we are very spread out throughout multiple buildings and the bulk of the work force regularly keeps there email closed for hours at a time. I need to create a simple way to be able to push out a message and have it "pop up" on everyones computer(or a single computer). My first thought was to write a windows service that calls a winform/wpf app that resides on each computer that simply pops up with the message. Not sure how viable an idea that is but this is just brain-storming. A different route, I thought, could be an app that resides in the systray on each computer that polls a db table and using the Query Notifications could pop up a message each time a new row is added. Then simply create an insanely basic app for writing a row to that table. So, what I am asking is if any one else has walked this path. If so, how? What things did you take into consideration? Are either of my ideas valid starting points or are "egg and my face in perfect alignment"? Is there a different way that is even simpler? Thanks

When image will be loaded dynamically - other class will set an image from loaded data. Now, my question is how can we add an observer to UIImageView's instance. Observer and notifications are same or not ? If it is not then what's different ?   • Expiry time in notify-send notifications

    On my HP computer running Ubuntu 12.04, the brightness and volume increments were much higher than I wanted. On top of that, the notification for the volume was just plain wrong (0% sound did not correspond to 0 on the progress bar). So I decided to override these options with my own commands. I used CompizConfig Settings Manager to add custom commands to the brightness and volume keys (this couldn't be done in the regular settings because these keys were handled by the BIOS, unlike normal function keys). I used xbacklight to control the brightness and amixer to control the volume. The problem is that the nice notify-send notifications don't show up when I manually set the brightness/volume, so now I have to do that myself too. However, there are two problems with notify-send: The expire time option doesn't work You have to wait until a notification is finished before the next one comes up Before I overrided the brightness/volume keys, the system was able to send notifications without these two restrictions. Notifications disappeared within 3 seconds (instead of the default 10), and if I double tapped the volume or brightness button, the progress bar would immediately change to the new brightness (instead of showing the old progress bar for 10 seconds and then showing the new one). Since the system was able to do it, I was wondering how I can achieve the same type of notifications?

If I click the notification from the home screen, the notification disappears and my app is brought to the front, however it remains on the activity which was open before going to the home screen, instead of going to the main screen. What am I doing wrong? How do I specify the activity that will be pulled up?

  • How to make Gwibber notifications clickable?

    One of the accounts that I have in Gwibber is my Twitter account. It nicely shows every now and then notifications with the new twits. Whenever a twit has a link (URL) within it I feel an urge to click on the link withing the notification to directly open it within a browser. However, it seems like notifications are not clickable and when hovering over them they just become opaque. Is there a way to make those links clickable?

  • Customizing JBar for Notifications

    Lately I've been using JBar, a very neat jQuery plugin for displaying notifications in my web applications. Unfortunately the original version of JBar only supports binding to the click event of a DOM item. In order to get around this limitation I have modified the source code and posted an updated version on my GitHub account here. The modified version allows you to display a JBar notification by calling a method. I typically use it to display succes or failure messages when doing Ajax calls. I have also included some additional CSS and JS so that you can diplay different styles of notifications. showNotification(message) shows a green "success" message. showWarning(message) shows an orange "warning" message. showMessage(message, className) allows you to specify a custom class to apply to the notification for additional styling purposes.     Yep, looks like iOS5 introduces a centralized messaging system: the Notification Center. Wonder where they got that idea from? Seriously, way to go though; this matches and probably betters what I really like about Android’s notifications system. I’ll have to check it out myself, though. Application UX's own research confirmed the centralized approach as something users wanted in research last year. This feature will really help the iOS in the enterprise user market too. Up to now, iOS is pretty dismal in the notifications space IMO.

  • How to clear unshown OSD notifications

    I am a webmaster of 2 active websites. Every time I start Thunderbird, it downloads all the new messages from the admin mail addresses of these sites - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc. There are about 20 of them - this includes my personal email accounts. Now, am not always connected to the internet and there arises cases where I need to access already downloaded mails. Thunderbird then tries to connect to the internet, which it can't coz am offline, and then displays about twenty OSD notifications, one after the other, telling me that connection for each email address has failed. That's frustrating and it really eating me up. Am looking for a way, either: 1. To tell Thunderbird NOT to connect to the internet when am offline, or 2. To clear all these notifications after like the first one shows. And if it will help, am using ubuntu 13.04 and Thunderbird 24.0 and I always keep my computer fully updated. Any help is welcome.   • How can I handle unread push notifications in iOS?

    I have a iOS 5.1 application that registers to the APNS service to receive notifications. The register is successful and I receive the notifications correctly. The problem comes when I try to handle the notifications. Once the application is running, the method didReceiveRemoteNotification in the AppDelegate is called correctly and so the notification is handled as intended. This, however, only happens when the application is running on the foreground. However, when the application is running on the background or is simply stopped, that method is not called. I've read that you should add some lines to the method didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method to obtain the notification from the userInfo dictionary, and handle it. This works just fine, but ONLY when the application is opened by clicking on the notification at the Notification Center. This means that if you open the application by clicking on its badge, or simply by changing context if you were running it on the background, the app never realises that a notification came in. Additionally, if more than one notification was received, we can only handle one of them at once by clicking on the Notification Center, which is a pain :-) Is there any way to read the pending notifications in the Notification Center? I know there is a way to flush them using the method cancelAllLocalNotifications but I haven't found a way to just read them. And I really need to handle all of them. I thought of implementing a communication protocol with the third-party notification server to retrieve the information again when the application comes to the foreground, but since the information is already in the operating system I would find it strange if it's impossible to access it somehow. So, does anybody know a way to do it? Thanks in advance.

The problem is I don't get a notification when an optional update is available like definition updates for microsoft security essentials. I have "give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" checked, but I have no notification balloon or icon when there is a new optional update is available. From time to time I open Windows update and then I see I have new optional updates available. How to get notifications for those too?
