• Unlock all private keys on Ubuntu, entering password only once at login

  I login to Ubuntu 12.04 using a password. Later on, when I use my browser(Chrome), I'm asked for a password to unlock the keychain so that the browser can access my saved credentials for various websites (it's the same password). Also, whenever I use SSH to connect to other computers using my private key, I am prompted for the same password to unlock my private key. How can I make it so that I am asked for my password exactly once per login (given that my login password is the same as the one I use for all my private keys)? Probably someone will try to label this question as a duplicate of this question, this question, or this question. While these questions are similar, none of them explicitly say that there still needs to be a password entered on login, as I am demanding here. As a result, the accepted solutions just say "set your passwords to blank"--I don't want that, it's dangerous! So I am aware of the similar questions, but none of them has received the correct answer yet, because they are slightly different.

  I receive this message when trying to change my password: "Bad: new and old password are too similar" The passwords' "similarity" is irrelevant for my needs, so I'd like to bypass this. I tried sudo passwd $my_username I thought this had worked because I got a message: passwd: password updated successfully However, the password change has no effect after leaving the terminal, and my old password is still the only one recognized. I can see that it works at console login it ask me for a password change, however, on graphic mode (LXDE) it just returns to login screen after entered my user and password and never asks me for a password chage.   Here's our problem, users who want to change their password trough OWA get this error "The password you entered doesn't meet the minimum security requirements.", even if users are respecting the minimum security requirements. With these settings, we have the error: Enforced password history 1 passwords remembered Maximum password age 185 days Minimum password age 1 day Minimum password length 7 characters Password must meet complexity requirements enabled With these test settings, we don't have an error: Enforced password history not defined Maximum password age not defined Minimum password age not defined Minimum password length not defined Password must meet complexity requirements not defined People can change their password but there is no more security! Just changing one parameter of the GPO for example "Enforced password history", brings back this error. Here's our server configuration : Windows Server 2008 R2 Exchange Server 2010 Version: 14.00.0722.000 If anybody has a clue it would very helpful !

  Are there any tools/apps/scripts out there that will do password expiry notification for Windows 2008 Active Directory credentials? This is needed for our web apps that use Active Directory for LDAP authentication. The problem is those apps do not notify you that your password is going to expire when you login. We have many offsite users who do not have machines bound to the AD. So there is no way to let them know to reset their password. I'd like the user to be notified 30,7 and 1 day before it expires. I'd also like our help desk to get an email for the expiring passwords for the week and recently expired passwords. I've looked at oldcmp.exe from link text and that gets me my reports but it does not do the automation that I'm looking for on the individual users.

Sorry if there is any helpful answer, please don't vote down but please link to the question(s) with such answers. The problem can be reproduced as follows: When I remove the password of an administrator account, "Log In without Password", I cannot use that account to authenticate. When I do something that requires authentication, I cannot use an admin without a password to authenticate. If I leave the password box blank without a password while choosing a non-password admin, authentication fails (in terminal or in GUI). How to fix this problem?

  I am new to Ubuntu, am extremely delighted with the performance and speed, as compared to Windows 7-However, I messed up, I think...when I booted my USB disc, I set a password, as directed, and when Ubuntu booted up I tried to reset my password via User Accounts to "None". Now, the Password Authentication window prevents me from downloading software, (Audacity and my Ubuntu updates. Also, I've tried to boot into GRUB and the Recovery Console, as directed; however, the PC bypasses GRUB and boots into Ubuntu instead. Also, when attempting to use the terminal as directed to change the password, I'm given a password prompt there also. If the problem is on my end, could you email/reset my password? My PC is an emachines EL1358G. I am otherwise happy with Ubuntu!

Are there any obvious flaws in this alternative approach? Generate a MD5 hash of the user's existing password Email hash string to user User clicks on link containing string String is validated by hashing existing pw again; if it matches, user's pw is reset Note that the user's password is already stored in a hashed and salted form, and I'm just hashing it once more to get a unique but repeatable string. And yes, there is one obvious "flaw": the reset link thus generated will not expire until the user changes their password (clicks the link). I don't really see why this would be a problem though -- if the mailbox is compromised, the user is screwed anyway.

  I have a domain controller on Windows Server 2008. When I set up my users, I gave them all a dummy password with the "must change on next login" checked. Everyone's machine is all on the same network as the domain controller, but we are not forcing them to join their computers to the domain. The DC has a website which requires the use of domain accounts to access it. How do I tell my users to change their domain passwords without connecting their PC to the domain or making them log in to a machine on the domain? I do not want anything I will have to install on each client to allow them to change their passwords (I have a password expiration policy). Most of these workstations are XP.

• Password Security: Short and Complex versus ‘Short or Lengthy’ and Less Complex

  Creating secure passwords for our online accounts is a necessary evil due to the huge increase in database and account hacking that occurs these days. The problem though is that no two companies have a similar policy for complex and secure password creation, then factor in the continued creation of insecure passwords or multi-site use of the same password and trouble is just waiting to happen. Ars Technica decided to take a look at multiple password types, how users fared with them, and how well those password types held up to cracking attempts in their latest study. The password types that Ars Technica looked at were comprehensive8, basic8, and basic16. The comprehensive type required a variety of upper-case, lower-case, digits, and symbols with no dictionary words allowed. The only restriction on the two basic types was the number of characters used. Which type do you think was easier for users to adopt and did better in the two password cracking tests? You can learn more about how well users did with the three password types and the results of the tests by visiting the article linked below. What are your thoughts on the matter? Are shorter, more complex passwords better or worse than using short or long, but less complex passwords? What methods do you feel work best since most passwords are limited to approximately 16 characters in length? • Password not working for sudo ("Authentication failure")

  Before I mention anything further, DO NOT give me a response saying that terminal won't show password input. I'm AWARE of that. I'm typing my user password in (not a capslock issue), and for some reason it still says 'Authentication Failure'. Is there some other password (one I'm not aware of) I'm supposed to be using other than my user password? I've had this ubuntu before, on another hard drive and I didn't have this problem.   So my sister gave me this old laptop that has Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is that she has a username administrator password, but she forgot it. I've tried using GRUB and launching recovery mode and using the root shell prompt. And I type the "passwd username" command, and it tells me to type the new UNIX password, but when I try to type a new password it's like my keyboard doesn't even work. It types nothing. What's the problem? Why does my keyboard not type anything when I try to reset the UNIX password? It always works perfectly fine. I'm grateful for any help, thank you.

  I've been happily connecting to a Windows share from my 14.04 machine. When I first entered the password for the share I chose to have it remembered forever. Yesterday I changed the password on the Windows machine, today I can't access the share... My searches for a solution have been in vain, most suggestions say that there is an entry in the Password & Keys (seahorse) app that should be deleted, this doesn't exist for me. • Cannot apply unity --reset after modifying files

• How to enable password challenge in Active Directory?

  As IT Support, my team is taking so much time reseting passwords. So, we thought it would be interesting to enable some sort of Password Challenge in Active Directory so users could reset their own passwords, after correctly answering some questions. Despite we alert users by mail when their passwords are going to expire, they just delete the mail and go on so we think it should be a great idea.
