  • How to troubleshoot ping request time out

    - by user28317
I have a Windows 7 and an XP machine connected to a NETGEAR wireless router. Both machines can log into the network and surf the web. Both are connecting wirelessly. I can ping the router from each machine and get a reply. I can ping each machine from the router and get a reply. But i cannot ping each machine from the other; getting a request time out. Subnet IP Addresses are 192.168.1.* Router =1; Win7 = 10; XP = 11; Firewall is currently off in both systems. Since i can ping from router im picking that not the problem anyway. If i try to ping from xp to win7 i get Request Timed Out. If i try to ping from Win7 to Xp i get destination host unreachable. What should i do now? Thanks

  • Open "play" button links on last.fm in SweetFM

    - by Isaac Waller
I use SweetFM on my Mac (running OS X Leopard) to play (and export) last.fm music. But I find it annoying I have to look at the station on the website (in Safari 4) and enter it in manually in SweetFM. How can I make it so the little "play" buttons () will open in SweetFM instead of in Safari?

  • ping/ssh networking problem with server from 1 particular windows xp laptop

    - by user47650
I am experiencing an odd problem with one specific server at my data centre connecting from my laptop. Basically the server is accessible from other machines in my house, but not from 1 particular laptop which is running windows XP. I have setup tcpdump on the server and wireshark on the laptop, and I can see ping echo request and reply packets that actually make it back to the wireshark on the laptop, but nothing shows in the ping console output like so; $ ping xxx.55.32.255 Pinging xxx.55.32.255 with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for xxx.55.32.255: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), But I can see from the wireshark on my local laptop that the ping reply gets back... No. Time Source Destination Protocol Info 46 3.964474 192.168.1.64 xxx.55.32.255 ICMP Echo (ping) request Frame 46 (74 bytes on wire, 74 bytes captured) Ethernet II, Src: Intel_31:d3:01 (00:19:d2:42:c3:01), Dst: ThomsonT_01:b8:2c (00:14:7f:02:b9:3c) Internet Protocol, Src: 192.168.1.64 (192.168.1.64), Dst: xxx.55.32.255 (xxx.55.32.255) Internet Control Message Protocol No. Time Source Destination Protocol Info 48 4.119060 xxx.55.32.255 192.168.1.64 ICMP Echo (ping) reply Frame 48 (74 bytes on wire, 74 bytes captured) Ethernet II, Src: ThomsonT_01:b8:2c (00:14:7f:01:b8:2c), Dst: Intel_21:c3:01 (10:20:d2:31:c3:01) Internet Protocol, Src: xxx.55.32.255 (xxx.55.32.255), Dst: 192.168.1.64 (192.168.1.64) Internet Control Message Protocol obviously I have disabled the windows firewall and there is nothing in the windows event log. There is nothing else obviously strange about the server as it is the same build as other servers that I can connect to fine.

  • Wget works, Ping doesn't

    - by derty
There are some anomalies on a Virtuozzo virtualized Debian 4 (I know, I'm gonna upgrade this one asap, but there dependences). We run some Websites on this one. And a view Days ago exmi4 wasnt able to send mails to SOME people. I'll use live.com as exampledomain! So some of this people got mails and some didn't. Some of the mails got stuck in the queue, and after 2 days they went out!! My Nagios never showed problems with the internet connection or disk space Now i wanted to install "dig" to look how he's solving the dns request. And this Debian tells me he doesn't know dig.. Long story made short, Debian is able to download sites with exact IP or even with wget live.com, but it is not able to ping live.com. I'm 99% sure that the networking is right and the routing too! Some examples of my tring below: wget live.com downloads the site ping live.com ping http://www.live.com ping http://live.com returns: ping: unknown host live.com EDIT: i now use heise.de not live.com any more. and i found out i can ping the heise.de server by using it's IP-address. myserver:~# ping 193.99.144.85 PING 193.99.144.85 (193.99.144.85) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 193.99.144.85: icmp_seq=1 ttl=248 time=12.7 ms 64 bytes from 193.99.144.85: icmp_seq=2 ttl=248 time=12.6 ms 64 bytes from 193.99.144.85: icmp_seq=3 ttl=248 time=12.9 ms 64 bytes from 193.99.144.85: icmp_seq=4 ttl=248 time=13.1 ms 64 bytes from 193.99.144.85: icmp_seq=5 ttl=248 time=13.1 ms --- 193.99.144.85 ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 4001ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 12.671/12.924/13.163/0.238 ms EDIT 2: myserver:/etc/apt# dig heise.de ; <<>> DiG 9.3.4-P1.2 <<>> heise.de ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 40551 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 5, ADDITIONAL: 3 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;heise.de. • Ping isn't acting accurate?

    - by Earlz
I've been trying to diagnose some latency issues with my internet connection. I've been lagging out of online video games and such, which of course could be their server's fault. So, I've been running ping some. It doesn't indicate anything unusual, but it does act a bit strange. I can start it with something like ping internethost -i 0.1 so that it will send a ton of packets, and every 10-20 seconds it will appear to just freeze for 2 or 3 seconds. The packets are still being received in the right order though, and there is no packet loss. The weirdest thing is that after the little freeze up, it will usually just report a ping time that is about 10-30ms higher than the average. How does this happen? Is ping still being accurate? I'm using Arch Linux. The host I'm pinging is my website, which shouldn't be doing any kind of ping slowing or filtering.

  • Can't ping self

    - by Paddy
I have a wireless internet connection setup on my Mac. (v10.5.6) Am connected to the internet and everything is running smoothly. I recently discovered a quirky behaviour while setting up apache web server. When i typed in my dynamic ip (http://117.254.149.11/) in the webbrowser to visit my site pages it just timed out. In terminal i tried pinging localhost and it worked. $ ping localhost PING localhost (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.063 ms 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.056 ms 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.044 ms But if i pinged my ip it would just time out. $ ping 117.254.149.11 PING 117.254.149.11 (117.254.149.11): 56 data bytes ^C --- 117.254.149.11 ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss Pinging any other site works though. I am completely stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • ping alternative to measure routing distance (on Windows)

    - by Marco Demaio
Hello, in order to measure aprroximately the rouitng distance (to see if a server is close to my country or too far away) I usually use ping command. I'm in Italy, when I ping Italian servers I get 36ms when I ping US EAST servers I get an average of 120ms when I ping US WEST servers I get an average of 200ms etc. Unfortunately some web hosters turn off the ping reply on their servers, so my question is how do I detect the routing distance, is there another easy to use command in Windows to accomplish the same task? Thanks!

  • Ping myself, works with ipv6 not ipv4 in Windows 7

    - by user68546
Hi! I've tried to solve the following problem with no luck and I need some proffesional help. The following is possible: Ping all computers (that I tried) in the domain without problem. Ping myself with localhost which use ::1. Ping myself with my given ipv6 IP. Internet access. The following is not possible: Noone can ping me (request timeout) with computername/ipv4/ipv6. I cannot ping myself with my given ipv4 IP or 127.0.0.1 (request timeout). Tried to enable/disable TCP/IPv4. Same issue. Turned off windows firewall. Added an inbound rule to allow icmp (just in case). Same same.. Is there someone out there that has any idea what the issue could be? Any help would be most appreciated!

  • Windows Virtual Machine ping reply fails the first few times

    - by user28471
I am running a windows Web Server 2008 virtual machine. When I try to ping it from another windows machine the ping reply comes straight back with 100% success. But when I try to ping it from one of the Linux boxes, the ping reply fails with partial or 100% loss the first couple of time and succeeds the third time onwards. I know it is quite strange but can any one think anything that could be causing it. Could anything in the Windows Domain Security or Firewall be "taking time" to allow responding to the ping request? In fact even the firewall is turned off on the virtual machine.

  • Speeding up ping

    - by sam
We have pretty slow internet which makes working online quite tedious some times the internet is just generally slow, 600ms ping, 0.90mb download. (we are in Londnon, can you beleive). But other times the internet download speed is ok 5-8mb but the ping in 600ms is there a way we can speed this up. Good performance would be 5-10mb 30ms ping at our location, which we sometimes get in the morning. Resetting the router always seem to solve the ping issue for about 10 minutes but then it slows down again, any idea whats governing the ping and if anything can be done to address it ?

  • Unable to ping server from client B but able to ping from client A. Please help

    - by Soundar Rajan
This is not really a programming question, but I am at my wit's end ... I am trying to configure a IIS 6.0/Windows Server 2003 web server with a ASP.net application. When I try to ping the server from client computer A I get the following: PING 74.208.192.xxx ==> Ping fails PING 74.208.192.xxx:80 ==> Ping succeeds! From client computer B, BOTH the pings fail. PING 74.208.192.xxx ==> Ping fails PING 74.208.192.xxx:80 ==> Ping fails with a message "Ping request could not find host 74.208.192.xxx:80" Both clients A and B are on the same subnet. The server is outside (a virtual server hosted by an ISP) I have an ASP.NET application in a virtual directory on the server. In IE or firefox, if I enter http://74.208.192.xxx/subdir/subdir/../Default.aspx, it works from both the clients! The server has default firewall settings but web server enabled (Port 80 is open).

  • Can I use a list of blog ping services for a portal?

    - by Ivanhoe123
I'm setting up a list of ping services for a portal. It has a blog, forum, articles, restaurants, hotels and many other information, so it is far beyond a blog. I have a list of standard ping services for WP blogs - but I do not know if this should be literally only for blogs. My questions are: Is it recommended to ping blog services from a portal, such as http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2? Are there any penalties for sites that are not recognized as blogs? Is there some list of ping services for regular websites and not only blogs? Thanks!

  • Need help troubleshooting highly variable ping times

    - by Elliot.Bradshaw
I'm at work using Citrix (think Remote Desktop) to connect to client sites. With my job I have to write a fair bit of code while I'm connected remotely via Citrix, so the latency of my internet connection is important. If I'm getting ping times above 250ms, then it becomes almost impossible to scroll, click or type with accuracy. Recently my Comcast business internet has been exhibiting highly variable ping times. If I ping google.com, I'll get pings that range from 9ms all the way up to 1300ms. The problem seems to be at its worst during the hours of 1PM to 4:30PM. Outside of those hours and the variance in pings settles down, mostly between 9ms and 50ms. The signal to noise ratio and upstream power are both fine on my modem--the values are here: http://pastebin.com/D4hWGPXf I ran a trace route from my computer to google.com (the results of which are here: http://pastebin.com/GcdjYvMh) and did another test ping to the IP of the first hop outside of our local network (73.98.44.1)--the variance in ping times existed in exactly the same manner as if I were pinging Google. Connecting directly to the cable modem by CAT5 makes no difference. Here is a screenshot demonstrating the variance of the ping times: http://postimage.org/image/haocdeauv/full/ -- as you can see it can get pretty bad. Three Comcast techs have been out (two of them were here when the problem wasn't happening) and they as well as the regional tier 2 Comcast support were unable to diagnose the problem. I now have a ticket open with tier 3 support, but have yet to hear back from them. Does anyone know what could cause these sorts of problems or have any idea from the traceroute above where it could be originating? The regional tier 2 guy tried to tell me that what I'm seeing is normal--are highly variable ping times like that ever acceptable? Anything I should ask Comcast to do or look at to get this problem fixed? Any tips/advice much appreciated! Edit: This is Comcast cable internet at a small start-up, we've ruled out congestion in our private LAN as a cause (i.e., no one's watching YouTube when the pings become variable). Update: Tier 3 Comcast support advised swapping out the modem, a tech came here today and did that--same problem persists.

  • Win 7 Netbook refuses to ping JetDirect card (all other PCs work)

I have an odd thing occuring here. From a Windows 7 netbook, I cannot ping an HP printer on the network, while all other machines (Win7/Vista) can. And the netbook can also ping everything else on the LAN. Example showing that the netbook can ping 192.168.3.4 but not 3.6. • Ping: Destination Host Unreachable, from the destination host itself

    - by phunehehe
I have a server that responds in a weird way to ping: $ ping hostname.com PING hostname.com (<IP address>) 56(84) bytes of data. From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable I'm confused, as the messages come from the server that I want to ping, and at the same time it's saying Destination Host (itself) Unreachable. Pinging by IP address yields the same result. The server is online and operating normally. What could be the cause?

  • Same network same switch but computers can't talk "ping"to eachother [closed]

    - by Sue
Possible Duplicate: How does IPv4 Subnetting Work? Each computer(all 2 of them) can ping the router but can't ping each-other and firewall is off. Same default gateway, IP address very similar (just two number away at end) but the subnet mask is different between these two computers. One ends in 192 the other 224. There is a switch between them that then connects to the router. Why can't the computers ping each-other?

  • Ping Unknown Host on CentOS at EC2

    - by organicveggie
Weird problem. We have a collection of servers running CentOS 5 on EC2. The setup includes two DNS servers and two LDAP servers. DNS has a CNAME pointing at the primary LDAP server. One machine (and only one machine) is giving me problems. I can ssh into the server using LDAP authentication. But once I'm on the machine, ping won't resolve the LDAP host even though DNS seems to work fine. Here's ping: $ ping ldap.mycompany.ec2 ping: unknown host ldap.mycompany.ec2 Here's the output of dig: $ dig ldap.mycompany.ec2 ; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_5.3 <<>> ldap.studyblue.ec2 ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 2893 ;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;ldap.mycompany.ec2. • unable to ping hostname, but \\hostname\\c$ works!?

    - by ciscokid
I'm having a strange issue on my initial lab setup. Situation: Host with OS Server 2008 R2 64bit, on this host a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V with OS Server 2008 SP1 32bit. The virtual machine has a fixed ip, and is referring to itself for the preferred DNS Server (dns server role has been installed). The host has tcp/ip set to automatic (so automatic ip from router, and dns/gateway = router). Both are able to ping each other on IP address (same ip range). Both are NOT able to ping each other on hostname (sounds logic because virtual machine dns server does not yet have a dns record for the hostmachine). But here's the strange thing: I am able to set up a working network mapping on the Virtual Machine to the host: \hostname\c$. The first thing I thougt was 'something' is blocking the ping request, so I completely disabled Windows Firewall on both Virtual Machine and host. Still pinging on hostname in both ways didn't work, yet I am able to access the network mapping on hostname. There is no extra software installed on both systems (clean windows server 2008).Can someone tell me what is causing this? I always thought: ping on IP address works = network mapping on IP address works. Pinging on hostname doesn't work = network mapping on hostname doesn't work neither. Where am I wrong? Looking forward to your advice!

  • Win7 VM @ ESXi Server @ VMWorkstation (Win7) - ping works only from VM -> HostOS, not vice versa

    - by DK2000
right now I'm toying around with VM Ware stuff and not having any pcs then my laptop I decided to run an ESXi Server inside of VWmware Workstation. I was just curios to see if the server would allow to setup and run a VM. And after some tweaking there it was, working like a charm. Okay not that fast but startin' the VM from vSphere and "opening a console" gave my direct access to that VM. Now I wanted to see if I could ping the host from the VM (VM Workstation Network is set to "host only"). And it worked, at least from the VM I could ping the ESXi server and the host. From the host I am able to ping the ESXi Server but I can't ping the VM! I asked myself anyway where the VM got its ip adress from. At the DCHPs IP there is at no machine after all. I even tried to use that DHCP adress for my Host and it didn't work out. You can see my settings from the screenshot here (it's pretty wide so just a link): http://yfrog.com/n4desktopfeop The only thing that got me thinking was when I once changed the ESXi's IP from 192.168.92.137 to 192.168.0.137. I still was able to connect to the ESXi server via its new IP but when I tried to run the VM console from vSphere I got an error after a while that said "couldnt connect to 192.168.92.137:903". So vSphere connects just through a port of the ESXi server to the VM?!? Could I setup a Linux VM to use it as a DHCP that I'd at least have control over the IPs that are given. Which lowest end linux could be used for this purpose?!? Thank you for your time! :)

  • ping incorrectly pinging 127.0.0.1

    I've got an odd DNS issue. I'm running a dual ipv4/ipv6 environment on Linux. Pinging some sites results in ping pinging 127.0.0.1. e.g. #> ping authserver.mojang.com PING authserver.mojang.com (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.045 ms 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.043 ms 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.058 ms --- authserver.mojang.com ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2000ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.043/0.048/0.058/0.010 ms Dig, however correctly returns the following: # dig authserver.mojang.com ; <<>> DiG 9.9.3-P2 <<>> authserver.mojang.com ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 15800 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 1 ;; OPT PSEUDOSECTION: ; EDNS: version: 0, flags:; udp: 512 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;authserver.mojang.com.
