  • What's the cause of (and treatment for) this java MySQL exception?

    - by justkevin
    I'm getting the following exception when executing the first preparedstatement after a period of inactivity: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure The last packet successfully received from the server was 2,855,054 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 123 milliseconds ago. at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Unknown Source) at com.mysql.jdbc.Util.handleNewInstance(Util.java:406) at com.mysql.jdbc.SQLError.createCommunicationsException(SQLError.java:1074) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.reuseAndReadPacket(MysqlIO.java:3052) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.reuseAndReadPacket(MysqlIO.java:2938) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.checkErrorPacket(MysqlIO.java:3481) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.sendCommand(MysqlIO.java:1959) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.sqlQueryDirect(MysqlIO.java:2109) at com.mysql.jdbc.ConnectionImpl.execSQL(ConnectionImpl.java:2648) at com.mysql.jdbc.PreparedStatement.executeInternal(PreparedStatement.java:2077) at com.mysql.jdbc.PreparedStatement.executeQuery(PreparedStatement.java:2228) This only shows up if my application hasn't communicated with MySQL recently. Subsequent queries execute normally. I suspect it's some kind of timeout issue, but the periods of inactivity are way below the 8 hour timeout for MySQL. Any suggestions?

  • How can I get an error or a warning from a PreparedStatement?

    - by Geo
    I had an update like this: update table set col1=?,col2=?,col3=? where col4=?; and I filled it up like this: statement.setString(1,"some_value"); statement.setString(2,"some_value"); statement.setString(3,"some_value"); and I forgot to add a fourth value.I did a executeUpdate and of course nothing happened to the database. I spent about 1 hour debugging it, to see where it goes wrong. I then modified my code to print the SQLWarning object returned by the getWarnings method. It always returned null. I even modified the code to the buggy state it was, before I set the fourth parameter, and still no warning. Does anyone know how one can get an error/warning? If it matters, my Connection is set to autoCommit.

  • Hibernate : Foreign key constraint violation problem

    - by Vinze
    I have a com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.MySQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException in my code (using Hibernate and Spring) and I can't figure why. My entities are Corpus and Semspace and there's a many-to-one relation from Semspace to Corpus as defined in my hibernate mapping configuration : <class name="xxx.entities.Semspace" table="Semspace" lazy="false" batch-size="30"> <id name="id" column="idSemspace" type="java.lang.Integer" unsaved-value="null"> <generator class="identity"/> </id> <property name="name" column="name" type="java.lang.String" not-null="true" unique="true" /> <many-to-one name="corpus" class="xxx.entities.Corpus" column="idCorpus" insert="false" update="false" /> [...] </class> <class name="xxx.entities.Corpus" table="Corpus" lazy="false" batch-size="30"> <id name="id" column="idCorpus" type="java.lang.Integer" unsaved-value="null"> <generator class="identity"/> </id> <property name="name" column="name" type="java.lang.String" not-null="true" unique="true" /> </class> And the Java code generating the exception is : Corpus corpus = Spring.getCorpusDAO().getCorpusById(corpusId); Semspace semspace = new Semspace(); semspace.setCorpus(corpus); semspace.setName(name); Spring.getSemspaceDAO().save(semspace); I checked and the corpus variable is not null (so it is in database as retrieved with the DAO) The full exception is : com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.MySQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException: Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails (`xxx/Semspace`, CONSTRAINT `FK4D6019AB6556109` FOREIGN KEY (`idCorpus`) REFERENCES `Corpus` (`idCorpus`)) at com.mysql.jdbc.SQLError.createSQLException(SQLError.java:931) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.checkErrorPacket(MysqlIO.java:2941) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.sendCommand(MysqlIO.java:1623) at com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlIO.sqlQueryDirect(MysqlIO.java:1715) at com.mysql.jdbc.Connection.execSQL(Connection.java:3249) at com.mysql.jdbc.PreparedStatement.executeInternal(PreparedStatement.java:1268) at com.mysql.jdbc.PreparedStatement.executeUpdate(PreparedStatement.java:1541) at com.mysql.jdbc.PreparedStatement.executeUpdate(PreparedStatement.java:1455) at com.mysql.jdbc.PreparedStatement.executeUpdate(PreparedStatement.java:1440) at org.apache.commons.dbcp.DelegatingPreparedStatement.executeUpdate(DelegatingPreparedStatement.java:102) at org.hibernate.id.IdentityGenerator$GetGeneratedKeysDelegate.executeAndExtract(IdentityGenerator.java:73) at org.hibernate.id.insert.AbstractReturningDelegate.performInsert(AbstractReturningDelegate.java:33) at org.hibernate.persister.entity.AbstractEntityPersister.insert(AbstractEntityPersister.java:2158) at org.hibernate.persister.entity.AbstractEntityPersister.insert(AbstractEntityPersister.java:2638) at org.hibernate.action.EntityIdentityInsertAction.execute(EntityIdentityInsertAction.java:48) at org.hibernate.engine.ActionQueue.execute(ActionQueue.java:250) at org.hibernate.event.def.AbstractSaveEventListener.performSaveOrReplicate(AbstractSaveEventListener.java:298) at org.hibernate.event.def.AbstractSaveEventListener.performSave(AbstractSaveEventListener.java:181) at org.hibernate.event.def.AbstractSaveEventListener.saveWithGeneratedId(AbstractSaveEventListener.java:107) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultSaveOrUpdateEventListener.saveWithGeneratedOrRequestedId(DefaultSaveOrUpdateEventListener.java:187) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultSaveEventListener.saveWithGeneratedOrRequestedId(DefaultSaveEventListener.java:33) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultSaveOrUpdateEventListener.entityIsTransient(DefaultSaveOrUpdateEventListener.java:172) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultSaveEventListener.performSaveOrUpdate(DefaultSaveEventListener.java:27) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultSaveOrUpdateEventListener.onSaveOrUpdate(DefaultSaveOrUpdateEventListener.java:70) at org.hibernate.impl.SessionImpl.fireSave(SessionImpl.java:535) at org.hibernate.impl.SessionImpl.save(SessionImpl.java:523) at org.hibernate.impl.SessionImpl.save(SessionImpl.java:519) at org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateTemplate$12.doInHibernate(HibernateTemplate.java:642) at org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateTemplate.execute(HibernateTemplate.java:373) at org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateTemplate.save(HibernateTemplate.java:639) at xxx.dao.impl.AbstractDAO.save(AbstractDAO.java:26) at org.apache.jsp.functions.semspaceManagement_jsp._jspService(semspaceManagement_jsp.java:218) [...] The foreign key constraint has been created (and added to database) by hibernate and I don't see where the constraint can be violated. The table are innodb and I tried to drop all tables and recreate it the problem remains... EDIT : Well I think I have a start of answer... I change the log level of hibernate to DEBUG and before it crash I have the following log insert into Semspace (name, [...]) values (?, [...]) So it looks like it does not try to insert the idCorpus and as it is not null it uses the default value "0" which does not refers to an existing entry in Corpus table...

  • Java doest run prepare statements with parameter

    - by Zaiman Noris
    If using PreparedStatement to query my table. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do so. My code is as simple as this :- PreparedStatement preparedStatement = connection.prepareStatement( "Select favoritefood from favoritefoods where catname = ?"); preparedStatement.setString(1, "Cappuccino"); ResultSet resultSet = preparedStatement.executeQuery(); Error thrown is java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00911: invalid character. As if it never run through the parameter given. Thanks for your time. I've spend a day to debug this yet still unsuccessful. As mention by Piyush, if I omit the semicolon at the end of statement, new error is thrown. java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist. But I can assure you this table is indeed exist. UPDATE shoot. i edited the wrong sql. now it is successful. thx for your time.

  • Is this use of PreparedStatements in a Thread in JAVA correct?

    - by Gormcito
    I'm still an undergrad just working part time and so I'm always trying to be aware of better ways to do things. Recently I had to write a program for work where the main thread of the program would spawn "task" threads (for each db "task" record) which would perform some operations and then update the record to say that it has finished. Therefore I needed a database connection object and PreparedStatement objects in or available to the ThreadedTask objects. This is roughly what I ended up writing, is creating a PreparedStatement object per thread a waste? I thought static PreparedStatments could create race conditions... Thread A stmt.setInt(); Thread B stmt.setInt(); Thread A stmt.execute(); Thread B stmt.execute(); A´s version never gets execed.. Is this thread safe? Is creating and destroying PreparedStatement objects that are always the same not a huge waste? public class ThreadedTask implements runnable { private final PreparedStatement taskCompleteStmt; public ThreadedTask() { //... taskCompleteStmt = Main.db.prepareStatement(...); } public run() { //... taskCompleteStmt.executeUpdate(); } } public class Main { public static final db = DriverManager.getConnection(...); }

  • Spring JdbcTemplate - Insert blob and return generated key

    - by itsadok
    From the Spring JDBC documentation, I know how to insert a blob using JdbcTemplate final File blobIn = new File("spring2004.jpg"); final InputStream blobIs = new FileInputStream(blobIn); jdbcTemplate.execute( "INSERT INTO lob_table (id, a_blob) VALUES (?, ?)", new AbstractLobCreatingPreparedStatementCallback(lobhandler) { protected void setValues(PreparedStatement ps, LobCreator lobCreator) throws SQLException { ps.setLong(1, 1L); lobCreator.setBlobAsBinaryStream(ps, 2, blobIs, (int)blobIn.length()); } } ); blobIs.close(); And also how to retrieve the generated key of a newly inserted row: KeyHolder keyHolder = new GeneratedKeyHolder(); jdbcTemplate.update( new PreparedStatementCreator() { public PreparedStatement createPreparedStatement(Connection connection) throws SQLException { PreparedStatement ps = connection.prepareStatement(INSERT_SQL, new String[] {"id"}); ps.setString(1, name); return ps; } }, keyHolder); // keyHolder.getKey() now contains the generated key Is there a way I could combine the two?

  • What to pass to UserType, BlobType.setPreparedStatement session parameter

    - by dlots
    http://blog.xebia.com/2009/11/09/understanding-and-writing-hibernate-user-types/ I am attempting to defined a customer serialization UserType that mimics, the XStreamUserType referenced and provided here: http://code.google.com/p/aphillips/source/browse/commons-hibernate-usertype/trunk/src/main/java/com/qrmedia/commons/persistence/hibernate/usertype/XStreamableUserType.java My serializer outputs a bytearray that should presumably written to a Blob. I was going to do: public class CustomSerUserType extends DirtyCheckableUserType { protected SerA ser=F.g(SerA.class); public Class<Object> returnedClass() { return Object.class; } public int[] sqlTypes() { return new int[] {Types.BLOB}; } public Object nullSafeGet(ResultSet resultSet,String[] names,Object owner) throws HibernateException,SQLException { if() } public void nullSafeSet(PreparedStatement preparedStatement,Object value,int index) throws HibernateException,SQLException { BlobType.nullSafeSet(preparedStatement,ser.ser(value),index); } } Unfortunetly, the BlobType.nullSafeSet method requires the session. So how does one define a UserType that gets access to a servlet requests session? EDIT: There is a discussion of the issue here and it doesn't appear there is a solution: Best way to implement a Hibernate UserType after deprecations?

  • Java: Prepare a statement without a connection

    - by r3zn1k
    I'm trying to generate some sql files in my java application. The application will not execute any sql statements, just generate a file with sql statements and save it. I'd like to use the java.sql.PreparedStatement to create my statements so that i don't have to validate every string etc. with my own methods. Is there a way to use the PreparedStatement without the calling java.sql.Connection.prepareStatement(String) function, because I don't have a java.sql.Connection?

  • "FOR UPDATE" v/s "LOCK IN SHARE MODE" : Allow concurrent threads to read updated "state" value of locked row

    - by shadesco
    I have the following scenario: User X logs in to the application from location lc1: call it Ulc1 User X (has been hacked, or some friend of his knows his login credential, or he just logs in from a different browser on his machine,etc.. u got the point) logs in at the same time from location lc2: call it Ulc2 I am using a main servlet which : - gets a connection from database pooling - sets autocommit to false - executes a command that goes through app layers: if all successful, set autocommit to true in a "finally" statement, and closes connection. Else if an exception happens, rollback(). In my database (mysql/innoDb) i have a "history" table, with row columns: id(primary key) |username | date | topic | locked The column "locked" has by default value "false" and it serves as a flag that marks if a specific row is locked or not. Each row is specific to a user (as u can see from the username column) So back to the scenario: --Ulc1 sends the command to update his history from the db for date "D" and topic "T". --Ulc2 sends the same command to update history from the db for the same date "D" and same topic "T" at the exact same time. I want to implement an mysql/innoDB locking system that will enable whichever thread arriving to do the following check: Is column "locked" for this row true or not? if true, return a message to the user that " he is already updating the same data from another location" if not true (ie not locked) : flag it as locked and update then reset locked to false once finished. Which of these two mysql locking techniques, will actually allow the 2nd arriving thread from reading the "updated" value of the locked column to decide wt action to take?Should i use "FOR UPDATE" or "LOCK IN SHARE MODE"? This scenario explains what i want to accomplish: - Ulc1 thread arrives first: column "locked" is false, set it to true and continue updating process - Ulc2 thread arrives while Ulc1's transaction is still in process, and even though the row is locked through innoDb functionalities, it doesn't have to wait but in fact reads the "new" value of column locked which is "true", and so doesn't in fact have to wait till Ulc1 transaction commits to read the value of the "locked" column(anyway by that time the value of this column will already have been reset to false). I am not very experienced with the 2 types of locking mechanisms, what i understand so far is that LOCK IN SHARE MODE allow other transaction to read the locked row while FOR UPDATE doesn't even allow reading. But does this read gets on the updated value? or the 2nd arriving thread has to wait the first thread to commit to then read the value? Any recommendations about which locking mechanism to use for this scenario is appreciated. Also if there's a better way to "check" if the row has been locked (other than using a true/false column flag) please let me know about it. thank you SOLUTION (Jdbc pseudocode example based on @Darhazer's answer) Table : [ id(primary key) |username | date | topic | locked ] connection.setautocommit(false); //transaction-1 PreparedStatement ps1 = "Select locked from tableName for update where id="key" and locked=false); ps1.executeQuery(); //transaction 2 PreparedStatement ps2 = "Update tableName set locked=true where id="key"; ps2.executeUpdate(); connection.setautocommit(true);// here we allow other transactions threads to see the new value connection.setautocommit(false); //transaction 3 PreparedStatement ps3 = "Update tableName set aField="Sthg" where id="key" And date="D" and topic="T"; ps3.executeUpdate(); // reset locked to false PreparedStatement ps4 = "Update tableName set locked=false where id="key"; ps4.executeUpdate(); //commit connection.setautocommit(true);

  • Hibernate mapping one-to-many problem

    - by Xorty
    Hello, I am not very experienced with Hibernate and I am trying to create one-to-many mapping. Here are relevant tables: And here are my mapping files: <hibernate-mapping package="com.xorty.mailclient.server.domain"> <class name="Attachment" table="Attachment"> <id name="id"> <column name="idAttachment"></column> </id> <property name="filename"> <column name="name"></column> </property> <property name="blob"> <column name="file"></column> <type name="blob"></type> </property> <property name="mailId"> <column name="mail_idmail"></column> </property> </class> </hibernate-mapping> <hibernate-mapping> <class name="com.xorty.mailclient.server.domain.Mail" table="mail"> <id name="id" type="integer" column="idmail"></id> <property name="content"> <column name="body"></column> </property> <property name="ownerAddress"> <column name="account_address"></column> </property> <property name="title"> <column name="head"></column> </property> <set name="receivers" table="mail_has_contact" cascade="all"> <key column="mail_idmail"></key> <many-to-many column="contact_address" class="com.xorty.mailclient.client.domain.Contact"></many-to-many> </set> <list name="attachments" cascade="save-update, delete" inverse="true"> <key column="mail_idmail" not-null="true"/> <index column="fk_Attachment_mail1"></index> <one-to-many class="com.xorty.mailclient.server.domain.Attachment"/> </list> </class> </hibernate-mapping> In plain english, one mail has more attachments. When I try to do CRUD on mail without attachments, everyting works just fine. When I add some attachment to mail, I cannot perform any CRUD operation.   • Java Prepared Statement arguments!

    - by Epitaph
    I am planning to replace repeatedly executed Statement objects with PreparedStatement objects to improve performance. I am using arguments like the MySQL function now(), and string variables. Most of the PreparedStatement queries I have seen contained constant values (like 10, and strings like "New York") as arguments used for the "?" in the queries. How would I go about using functions like now(), and variables as arguments? Is it necessary to use the "?"s in the queries instead of actual values? I am quite confounded.

  • What is causing a Hibernate SQL query exception?

    - by Dark Star1
    Hi all and sorry in advance for this post but I've spent way too much time going around in circles so I'm hoping someone could shed a light on it here for me. I updated a webapp on Tomcat and I'm getting the following error which didn't exist on the previous version. Though I am quite confident that the part of code I modifed isn't to blame as I have tested the app on two different dev servers. The production server is configured thus: CentOS 5.4 virtual server with tomcat 5.5.23 running mysql 5.0.77. The two dev servers are: Windows XP SP2 running tomcat 5.5.23 with mysql 5.1.49 Mac OSX 10.6.6 Running tomcat 6 with mysql 5.1.51 The application was developed using struts (1.1 as far as I can gather) with hibernate 3 as the peristence layer. It only fails on the production server for some reason I can't fathom. I'd like to draw your attention to the java.sql.SQLException near the bottom. After some long searching I found this but because it was posted years ago (about 1 year before development started on this app I'm sure Hibernate has evolved from that version. as I can't find a way of implementing his solution. I use Eclipse Helios as an IDE. • inserting datetimes into database using java

    - by gordatron
    Hi, I am wanting to insert a datetime into a MySql data base using Java and a prepared statement: Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance(); PreparedStatement stmnt = db.PreparedStatement("INSERT INTO Run " + "(Time) VALUE (?) "); stmnt.setDate(1, new java.sql.Date(cal.getTime())); stmnt.executeQuery(); NOTE: thre is currently an error - cannot find symbol (java.sql.Date) line 4 here db is an instance of a sort of wrapper class that exposes what I need from java.sql - its just getting a prepared statement from my connection object here. Time (the column) is a date time in my database, and I can only see sedDate and setTime method but I want to store both - also my code does not work anyway ;-) if anyone could give me some pointers on inserting a combined date time (current time would be a great help as that's my first goal) into a MySql DB using a prepared statement I would be very grateful. Thanks

  • why won't Eclipse use the compiler I specify for my project?

    - by codeman73
    I'm using Eclipse 3.3. In my project, I've set the compiler compliance level to 5.0 In the build path for the project. I've added the Java 1.5 JDK in the Installed JREs section and am referencing that System Library in my project build path. However, I'm getting compile errors for a class that implements PreparedStatement for not implementing abstract methods that only exist in Java 1.6 PreparedStatement. Specifically, the methods setAsciiStream(int, InputStream, long) and setAsciiStream(int, InputStream) Strangely enough, it worked when we were compiling it against Java 1.4, which it was originally written for. We added the JREs for Java 1.4 and referenced that system library in the project, and set the project's compiler level to 1.4, and it works fine. But when I do the same changes to try to point to Java 5.0, it instead uses Java 6. Any ideas why? I wrote a similar question earlier, here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2540548/how-do-i-get-eclipse-to-use-a-different-compiler-version-for-java I know how you're supposed to choose a different compiler but it seems Eclipse isn't taking it. It seems to be defaulting to Java 6, even though I have deleted all Java 6 JDKs and JREs that I could find. I've also updated the -vm option in my eclipse.ini to point to the Java5 JDK.

  • select for update problem in jdbc

    - by kartiku
    I'm having a problem with select for update in jdbc. The table i'm trying to update is the smalldb table, i'm having problems-- i'm using select for update which does a lock on the selected row the update statement is -- String updateQ = "UPDATE libra.smalldb SET hIx = ? • how do I get eclipse to use a different compiler version for Java?

    - by codeman73
    It seems like this should be a simple task, with the options in the Preferences menu for different JREs and the ability to set different compiler and build paths per project. However, it also seems to simply not work. For example, I have my JAVA_HOME set to a jre for Java 1.6. It's still not clear to me how Eclipse uses this, but it appears to be defaulting to this and not taking the project overrides. I have also installed Java 1.5, and added a JRE for this in eclipse in the Java-Installed JREs section. In my project, I've set the compiler compliance level to 1.5. In the build path for the project, I've added the System Library for the Java 1.5 JRE. • Insert data in an object to a database.

    - by paul
    I am facing the following design/implementation dilemma. I have a class Customer which is below with getters and setters. I would like to insert the value of the Customer into a "Customer" table of a database. But Customer has an address which is of type "Address". How do I go about inserting this field into the database?(I am using sqlite3). I thought of writing a separate table "Address(customerId,doorNo,city,state,country,pinCode)". But I am having second thoughts about generating the primary key(customerId) which should be same for both the "customer" and "Address" table. Sqlite3 faq states that I can do "Integer Primary Key" to use the field to generate an auto number. But if I do that in customer table, I would have to retrieve the same Id to be used in Address table. This kinda looks wrong to me :-?. There should be an elegant method to solve this. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. import java.io.*; import java.sql.*; class Customer { private String id; private String name; private Address address; private Connection connection; private ResultSet resultSet; private PreparedStatement preparedStatement; public void insertToDatabase(){ } } class Address{ private String doorNumber; private String streetName; private String cityName; private String districtName; private String stateName; private String countryName; private long pinCode; }

  • JDBC programms running long time performance issue

    - by phyerbarte
    My program has an issue with Oracle query performance, I believe the SQL have good performance, because it returns quickly in SQLPlus. But when my program has been running for a long time, like 1 week, the SQL query (using JDBC) becomes slower (In my logs, the query time is much longer than when I originally started the program). When I restart my program, the query performance comes back to normal. I think it is could be something wrong with the way I use the preparedStatement, because the SQL I'm using does not use placeholders "?" at all. Just a complex select query. The query process is done by a util class. Here is the pertinent code building the query: public List<String[]> query(String sql, String[] args) { Connection conn = null; conn = openConnection(); conn.setAutocommit(true); .... PreparedStatement preStatm = null; ResultSet rs = null; ....//set preparedstatment arg code rs = preStatm.executeQuery(); .... finally{ //close rs //close prestatm //close connection } } In my case, the args is always null, so it just passes a query sql to this query method. Is that possible this way could slow down the DB query after program long time running? Or I should use statement instead, or just pass args with "?" in the SQL? How can I find out the root cause for my issue? Thanks.
