  • How can I parse/ transform text log data before it gets captured in SCOM 2007 R2?

    I'm pretty much a noob with System Center Operations Manager 2007, and I'm probably missing something pretty basic, but I'm stumped anyway. We're setting up monitoring on some of our servers, and we'd like to capture data from some plain text log files (e.g. DNS debug logs, DHCP logs). It looks to me like I can set up a generic text file monitoring rule and get events captured into the main Ops Manager database, but my understanding is that the whole line of text from the plain text log gets captured as one field. In an ideal world, we'd be able to parse or transform that log file data to make it easier to query later. Is this possible? Is it easy? Do I have to buy expensive 3rd-party software to do it? One more thing: it would be even better if there was a way to stuff this data into the Audit Collection Services (ACS) database instead of the main one, but I'll take what I can get. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, I've seen numerous answers to similar questions like this one. I haven't seen on the web many people have asked the seemingly simple question "How do I connect Access 2007 to an SQL server 2008 database" - but all of the answers describe how you can migrate from access 2007 to an sql server 2008 database, or they describe how to connect access 2007 to an sql server 2005 database. I can't find any simple solution to my problem (and probably this is a problem for many others). Here is the question (sorry for the over emphasis): How do I connect to an sql server 2008 database (and I mean 2008, not 2005 :) ) from access 2007? Apologies again for the over emphasis, but this very simple question, and what I thought should be a very simple task seems, yes, ... impossible! I tried running sql server browser, enabling pipes, TCP etc, but it seems that with 2008 SQLEXPRESS just isn't recognised! Please can someone help with this. Peter

    I am in the planning stages of a project and am looking to hire a project manager. I want be doing some coding and keeping an eye on all parts of the project but feel a project manager will get better results than I could. I can project manage the project and not code and hire another coder or code myself and hire a project manager. I am worried that the project manager will fell impeded by having the project owner as part of the development team. If I run the project, the team might fall apart causing the project to fail. To stick within budget, I have to be involved in one capacity or another. Does anyone have experience with this situation or suggestions?

    Using Outlook 2007 with an Exchange Server. I am trying to setup a server-side rule, but regardless of what I do, it always sets up a client-only rule. I am trying to copy a message to a folder if it comes from a certain person and the subject contains certain words. What am I missing? Update: It seems that setting the rule to mark the message read-only forces the message to be client-side. Anyway to get around that?

I know I can use the Section Break routine, but the problem is the table needs to go into a company frame (which I cannot turn onto a landscape), so I literally need to turn the table by 90 degrees. Any way of doing something like that ?

    It is very important to make sure the server farm backup is taking properly, making sure that in case of any disaster, the administrator has the latest backup that can be used to restore. This articles addresses some of the options available for backup/restore in SharePoint 2007 Backup There are two options that can be utilized to take backup of SharePoint sites. Using SharePoint Central Administration website Using SharePoint central administration website, you can do backup/restore from user interface. Using central administration website you can back up the following · Server farm · Web application · Content databases Follow these steps to take backup of the server farm using central administration 1. Open Central administration website 2. Navigate to Operations -> Backup and Restore -> Perform a backup 3. Here you will have options to choose the item to back up. Select Farm (the top most item in the list) 4. Once you select the items to backup, click on “Continue to backup options” 5. Select “Full” as type of backup. 6. In the backup file location, enter the path where you need to store the backup. The path should be according to the UNC, for e.g. for c drive you may use \\server\c$\mybackupFolder 7. Click ok 8. Now you will be redirected to Backup and Restore Status page. This page shows the progress for the backup operation. You can use the refresh button to update the status of backup(this page will automatically refresh in every 30 seconds). Once completed you can find the files in the specified folder. Using STSADM website SharePoint comes with a STSADM command line tool. STSADM provides lot of administrative operations that can be performed on SharePoint 2007 sites. You can find STSADM command from the following location C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\bin (You may change the drive letter according to your installation) STSADM provides a method for performing the Office SharePoint Server 2007 administration tasks at the command line or by using batch files or scripts. STSADM provides access to operations not available by using the Central Administration site The general syntax for STSADM is as follows STSADM -operation Operation Name –parameter1 value1 –parameter2 value2 ……….. Using STSADM you can back up the following · Server farm · Web application · Content databases To perform any STSADM, operation you need to be a member of administrators group. Follow these steps to take backup of SharePoint server farm using STSADM tool. Note: make sure you are logged in to the computer where central administration website is installed. 1. Open the Command prompt (You should run command prompt with administrator privileges) 2. Change the working directory to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\bin 3. Enter the command, then press enter Stsadm –o backup -directory <UNC path> -backupmethod full 4. You will get success / failure message once the command finishes. How to schedule the backup There is no option to schedule a backup using central administration site. Also there is no operation provided by STSADM to automate the backup. The farm administrators need to take backup in regular intervals. To achieve this, you can write a batch file that includes STSADM command to take full backup of the server. This batch file can be scheduled using windows task scheduler to execute in certain intervals. Sample of the batch file 1. Open notepad(or any other text editor) 2. Enter the following commands @echo off echo =============================================================== echo Back up the farm to <C:\backup> echo =============================================================== cd %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN @echo off stsadm.exe -o backup -directory "<\backup>" -backupmethod full echo completed 3. Save the file with .bat extension You can schedule this batch file as you require. Other Options Using STSADM tool, you will be able to take backup for individual site collection. The syntax for this is stsadm -o backup -url <URL name for site collection> -filename <file name> [-overwrite] The explanations for the parameters are as follows. -url The url of the site collection you need to backup -filename The name of the backup file. E.g. c:\backup.bak -overwrite optional. Indicates if the filename specified exists, whether to overwrite or not. If you are creating the batch file for scheduling the backup for a site collection, you may need to specify the backup filename automatically created.     OneNote is the new star of the Office Suite, and is included in every edition of Office 2010.  OneNote’s file format has been changed in the 2010 version, so here’s how you can still share your notebooks with those using OneNote 2007. Convert your OneNote Notebooks to 2007 Format If you open a notebook from OneNote 2010 in OneNote 2007, you may see this warning informing you that the notebook was created in a newer version of OneNote and cannot be opened. To make your 2010 notebooks compatible with OneNote 2007, you need to convert them inside OneNote 2010.  In OneNote 2010, open the File menu; this should open to the Info tab by default.  Select the Settings button beside the notebook you want to use in OneNote 2007, and select Properties. In the properties dialog, click “Convert to 2007”. You may see a warning that some formatting, content, and history that is incompatible with OneNote 2007 will be removed.  Click Ok to continue. OneNote will automatically convert everything in this notebook to 2007 format.  If your notebook is very large, this may take a few minutes. Once the conversion is completed, you can re-open the properties dialog to see the change.  The format is listed as OneNote 2007 format, and you have the option to convert to 2010.  Your 2007 formatted notebook is still fully usable in OneNote 2010, but you may not be able to use some of the newer features in it. Now that your notebook is in 2007 format, you can share it with OneNote 2007 users.  Here’s our notebook, the OneNote 2010 guide, open in OneNote 2007 after the conversion. Incremental crawling is scheduled at that time and few of the Timer jobs (normal timer jobs) are scheduled to run every mins / per 10mins. 2. Number of user requests are less. From SQL Server 2005 Perspective: 1. Transaction log backup is scheduled at that time 2. No other scheduled jobs are running at that time. so, how to narrow down the issue, what would be causing the sudden SQL connection increase?

  • Exchange Server 2007 Setup

    Hi, I'm working on a upgrade to Exchange 2007 and I wanted to get some advise on hardware choices. We currently have an Exchange 2003 STD server with 400 users split between 6 AD Sites, that is housed on a single server. We need to move to a redundant, fault tolerant system to support our users. I'm planning on installing 2 Dell 1950 servers with W2k8-std to act as CAS and Hub servers, with NLB to allow abstraction of the actual server name to the users. There won't be an edge system since we have a Barracuda box already that will handle in/out spam/virus filtering. Backend I'm planning on 2 mailbox servers which will be Dell 2950s with 16GB RAM, 2 either dual-core or quad-core CPUs and 6 300GB SAS drives in some RAID config. These systems will be clustered using W2k8 Ent clustering and running CCR in Exchange. My questions are as follows: Is 16GB enough RAM for serving that many mailboxes along with the windows clustering and ccr? I'm trying to figure out disk layouts and I'm unsure of whether to use all local disk or some local and some SAN, via an OpenFiler iSCSI server. The SAN would be a Dell 2850 with 6 - 300GB SCSI drives and a PERC controller to slice as I want, with 8GB RAM. Option 1: 2 drives, RAID 1 - OS 2 drives, RAID 1 - Logs 2 drives, RAID 1 - Mail stores Option 2: 2 drives, RAID 1 - OS and logs 4 drives, RAID 5 - Mail Stores and scratch space for eseutil. Option 3: 2 drives, RAID 1 - OS 2 drives, RAID 1 - Logs 2 drives, RAID 0 - scratch space ~300GB iSCSI volume for mail stores Option 4: 2 drives, RAID 1 - OS 4 drives, RAID 5 - scratch space ~300GB iSCSI volume for mail stores ~300GB iSCSI volume for logs I have 2 sockets for CPUs and need to chose between dual and quad cores. The dual core have faster clocks but less cache and I'm thinking older architecture. Am I better off with more cores and cache while sacraficing clock speed? I am planning on adding the new E2K7 cluster to the E2K3 server and then move each mailbox over, all at once, then remove the old server. This seems more complicated than simply getting rid of the 2003 server and then adding the 2007 cluster and restoring the mailboxes using PowerControls or exmerge. The migration option lets me do this on my time, where a cutover means it all needs to work at once. If I go with the cutover method, how can I prebuild the servers and add them to the domain right after removing the 2003 server, or can't I? I think the answer is no and the migration is my only real option if I want to prebuild. I need to also migrate about 30GB of Public Folders. Is there anything special about this, other than specifying in the E2K7 install that I want older Outlook clients and PF's setup? I guess I could even keep the E2K3 server to host just the PFs? Lastly, if I have a mix of Outlook 200, 2003 and 2007 what do I need to do to make sure they all have access to the GAL and OAB? At time of cutover, we'll be at like 90% 2007, but we will have some older stuff around. My plan is to use Outlook Anywhere on laptops that are used outside the physical network. Are there any gotchas involved in that? I'm even thinking about using is for all Outlook clients, does anyone do that? The reason I'm considering it is that our WAN is really VPN tunnels over internet connections, so not a fully messhed, stable WAN.     A new guy at work moved in from Denmark, which means that he initially logged in to our Outlook Web Access 2007 from a computer with Danish Windows. As a result, all the objects in the tree-view in Outlook are now in Danish. For example, "Inbox" is called "Indbakke". This prevails, even though he has now logged in locally on his assigned work computer which has English Windows. We're running Exchange 2003, if that matters. How do you change the language of the names of the objects in Outlook 2007? The "Microsoft Office 2007 Language Settings" tool doesn't do this, and I couldn't find anything relevant to this by googling either. In Exchange System Manager there are the "Details Templates" which define these things in different languages, but over on his mailbox there was no configuration option to change which language to use.

    Hi All, I am trying to uninstall Exchange 2007 on a secodary server which has been decommissioned for quite a while (cleaning up after an old Network Admin). The only roll the server had was "Mailbox Role" (the primary server also has this). I have tried uninstalling using Programs and Features GUI tool but that hung on Mailbox Role Checks. I then tried uninstalling Exchange by running Setup.com /mode:uninstall. It has been stuck on 1% of "Mailbox Role Checks" for over 3 hours now. Is there any other options I have for uninstalling Exchange 2007 so the old server can be removed from the Exchange Management console?

    We currently have a single Exchange 2007 Server on Windows Server 2008. It's also a DC and I'd like to split the DC role to a different box. Is this doable without migrating the mailboxes off to a temporary box, re-installing and migrating back? I.e. can I just demote the server without breaking Exchange completely? I know this was quite painful with Server 2003/Exchange 2003, so I'm trying to get an idea of how much different the process is for Server 2008/Exchange 2007.

    Hi, I'm planning a redesign of a site in Project 2007. I have three developers to hand, all with the same skills. There are about 80 templates to be rendered as part of the redesign, and each template has been added as a project task. Each of these tasks can be done by any of the 3 devs, and each will take a day (with a few exceptions). There is no order in which the tasks must be completed, so there are no predecessor rules. I'd like to be able to assign tasks to a 'Developer' resource group, and for Project to see that three tasks can be done at once (as the group has three resources members) and queue the tasks as such. Googling leads me to Team Assignment, but that appears to be part of Project Server. Surely I can do this in standalone Project? Thanks, Adam

    I'm running into a problem where a Server 2003 SP2 box has started crashing roughly once an hour, BSODing out with the message that fltmgr.sys is probably the cause. I ran dumpchk.exe on the memory.dmp file, indicating the same thing. Any thoughts on typical root causes?   • excel pivot tables stopped working after upgrade to office 2007

    An excel document with several pivot and lookup tables that previously worked under office xp and 2003 stopped working after an upgrade to office 2007 (linked stuff doesn't update). I originally assumed there's something disabled in 2007 that I need to turn back on, but after having opened it in excel 2007 it no longer works in previous versions either. Any idea what I'm missing/what excel 2007 did?

    Hi All, I have a Exchange 2007 SP1 server running on Windows 2008 6 HD Drives in a RAID-1 OS, DB, Logs on separate RAID-1 Disks Size of the Mailbox Database is 183GB and increasing We only have First Storage Group and Second Storage Group There is no more space on the server to install new Physical Disks and create a Storage Group Q - Can I resize the RAID-1 Partition where the DB is ? Q - Any other suggestions as to how I can decrease the Mailbox DB Size ? Will be grateful for your suggestions on this. Kind Regards
