• Sound doesn't work anymore after replacing RAM

  Hello, today, I replaced one old RAM module with two newer, bigger ones, but now, the sound doesn't seem to work anymore. Already ran alsaconf and it didn't help. • Buying a new printer instead of replacing ink?

  With prices of basic printers being around $40 - $50 and a ink cartridge being around $20 - $30 each for black AND color. It costs me more to replace the printer's ink than to just buy a brand new printer. This just seems like a total waste of materials though (I have 4 printers sitting in my basement with no ink). I know the ink cartridges are smaller (not as full) in a new printer but I go through it in about 1 to 1.5 years only and by then my $40 gets me a better printer to boot. Also with certain printers the heads are not part of the ink (Epson use to do this and still might) so I get new heads as well. Is this a bad practice? Are retailers making this a reality when they are selling working hardware cheaper than replacement parts? Is there something more I should be considering? Edit: Some background, long ago I bought an Epson printer which I used to print docs etc vary rarely. The ink started running low so I bought to new carts for around $60 if I recall. The printer then stopped working so I replaced the carts with the new ones but the head was dead on the black which was not worth repairing. I bought a new HP printer for $49. This lasted around 1.5yrs and then the ink ran out, I went to buy new carts and the guy at the store got me to buy a new printer (that was smaller, faster, higher dpi, etc) and it was cheaper than replacing the ink. When the ink ran out on that one I bought a new printer again, etc. The printer gets used maybe once a week at most and I never print photos or anything. It normally is jsut stored away unplugged accumulating dust. People say to buy a laser printer but they are much larger, do not print color, (in the price range I am looking at) and might have the exact same issues. The problem I see is the manufacturer is making my behaviour possible by selling new printers at a loss hoping that they will cash in on the ink later. How can they produce a printer for so cheap which HAS ink in it, and the refills cost more than the unit? It can't.

  Hi, after processing my first steps in working with XML in java I am now at the point where I want to update some data in my XML/GPX file... Reaplacing it in my "Document" data type works great :) How here comes the question: how can I store the changed "document"-model back to my file? Do I have to do this by using the standart file-functions (via steams and so on) oder is the a more elegant way to do this? ;-) Here's the code I already worked out, maybe that could help.   Often, during a conversation or an email, or at a forum, I would like to type some math, but I don't need full equation support. Unicode symbols should suffice. What I need is an easy way to type math related unicode symbols. Since I already know latex, it makes sense to use the latex symbol mnemonics to type the math symbols. What I currently did is to write an AutoHotKey script which automatically replaces \latexSymbol with the corresponding unicode symbol, using the "hotstrings" AutoHotKey feautres. However, the AutoHotKey hotstrings proved unstable for many strings. Having a couple of tens lines would cause AHK to fail recognizing the strings from time to time. Any other solution? (No, Alt+unicode number isn't convenient enough) Attached is my AHK script.   We have a slightly complex Apache 2.2 setup in front of a Tomcat 6.0 instance. The main Tomcat webapp is deployed in: /opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT But we also have static content that we update semi-regularly. • Replacing local home server with VPS: Suggestions?

  So right now, I'm running an old box with a 2TB HDD in it. I use this as a file server for the home network, as well as a box for downloading large files which are synced via Dropbox. Lots of other tinkering things, too. Basically, I'm sick of paying extra for the power and having to worry about drive failures and whatnot. I'd rather get a remote server, let someone else manage it and provide access from the Internet. So, I've been looking for a Windows VPS that would give me access to install things and tinker, and I'm having a problem finding a host that offers more than 100GB of hard drive space. If they do offer a package with 100GB of storage, everything else is waaayyyy more than what I actually need. The idea is to create a permanent VPN connection from the cloud server to my home network to provide a transparent solution so I'm not having to go to lengths to transfer files or whatnot. I think a VPS solution will allow me to do this. I would like 1TB of storage space, minimum 100Mbps Internet connection, minimum 250GB bandwidth, admin access. Anyone have anything? Or am I being unreasonable? If I am, why?

• Help replacing old Windows 2003 SBS DC with a Win2008 Standard Edition DC

  Objective: Trying to replace a Windows 2003 SBS domain controller with a windows server 2008 Standard Edition Domain Controller. What I did: used ADPREP. Then all user accounts and OUs are successfully replicated into the 2008 server. I have also managed to transfer all the DC roles (operations master,schema,pdc) into the Server 2008. I have also used NETDOM QUERY FSMO . It displayed that all the roles transferred to the 2008 server. Problem: When I am trying to demote the windows 2003 SBS server using DCPROMO, the message is “No other Active Directory for this domain can be contacted”. I also tried shutting down the 2003 server. Users can login into the domain but they have trouble finding SHARED folders. Can someone help me find out what I did wrong ? Need a little push in the right direction here. Thank you very much ?

• Replacing stock Core 2 Duo heatsink fan (just the fan really) with a Dell CPU fan

  My old heatsink fan broke and I'm trying to reconnect its plugs to a new fan. My Dell CPU fan has some custom Dell plug. I snipped the old fan's wire in half and kept the plug on the end of it. I want to connect it to the Dell fan wire to the plug. The motherboard is a P5Q-e, the stock Core 2 Duo fan was .20A and the dell is .70A. Is that going to matter? The wire from the fan has four wires, the wire with the plug has four wires. They share three, of the four colors: red, black, and blue. Dell's fourth wire is white, while the plug's fourth wire is yellow. Is it safe to assume that I just connect the yellow and the white plug together and match the rest up? I don't want to take any risk of damaging anything. It runs fine passively without a fan, but I have speedstep on, so I would like to use this fan and just fasten it to the heatsink with some twist ties and paperclips and call it a day.

The hard disk is going to be replaced with an SSD which is larger. I have an idea of how I'm going to do this, but I want to be sure there isn't something obvious I'm missing.   I am using Apache2 with mod proxy on Ubuntu 12.04 as a reverse proxy to some back-end server: <VirtualHost *:80> ProxyPass / http://somewhere.com/mysite ProxyPassReverse / http://somewhere.com/mysite ServerName www.mysite.nl ServerAlias mysite.nl *.mysite.nl </VirtualHost> However, unfortunately the back-end server has some internal links hardcoded; e.g. a link to somewhere else in the site has <a href="http://somewhere.com/mysite/something"> instead of just <a href="something.png">. Is there a way I can use Apache to replace strings in the body as served by the backend before passing it back to the client? E.g replace all instances of "http://somewhere.com/site/" with "http://mysite.nl/" ? I know nginx or so is better as a reverse proxy, but the server is hosting other stuff so port 80 needs to be Apache2.

• Replacing all disks in a non-OS RAID 5 volume

  Hi all, We currently have a server with 8 x HDD slots. It is a HP DL380G5 with a P400 controller. 2 x HDD are in a RAID 1+0 config and this hosts the OS. 6 x HDD are in a RAID 5 config and holds an Oracle DB. Basically the RAID 5 volume is running out of space and we would like to swap all 6 with higher capacity disks. Excuse my ignorance as I am pretty new to this... I believe we will need to backup the data, delete the RAID volume, insert the new disks, recreate the volume, and restore the data. 2 questions: Do we need to worry about the OS partition or is it completely independent so we can simply take out the 6 and insert 6 new disks and get the controller to recognize the 6 new disks and form a new RAID 5 volume? We should not need to reinstall OS or Oracle correct? Since we are going to restore the data on the volume from another source (our vendor will take care of this) but we would like to keep the existing data on the 6 disks just in case we run into issues and want to fall back, is this possible?   How can I replace the default program providing console windows under Windows XP? I know of alternative programs, and I have a shortcut to start cmd.exe in Console2. But now I want console applications to start in Console2 rather than the default console program, even when I have no control over the program that starts the console application. (I.e. a non-console program starts consoleapp.exe, and I can't change it to start Console2 instead, but I still want the application to be started inside a new instance of Console2.) (Note that I want to replace the console itself, that is, the window in which console (i.e. text mode) applications run. And I must be able to run arbitrary, unmodified console applications: a substitute for a specific console program such as Cmd won't do me any good.) EDIT: So what I'm after is a CSRSS replacement, which leads to OT: I want to know when Microsoft is going to make a decent CSRSS replacement. Not being able to adjust the width of a "terminal" by resizing the window is a complete joke. Go download the ISE already. (It's included in Win7/2008R2.) But as far as I understand this ISE is an environment for Powershell, not a general console emulator.

• Replacing compiz/metacity with openbox reduces workspaces to 1

  I like to use the GNOME desktop, but I prefer to replace its window manager with openbox, with 4 workspaces. However, when I run openbox --replace, the number of workspaces available drops to 1. If I go into obconf, workspaces is still configured to be 4 (~/.config/openbox/rc.xml shows the same). I can get the workspaces to reappear by changing the value in obconf to anything else, and then back to 4. I have just been dealing with this problem since Ubuntu 9.04 (now up to 10.10) since I don't reboot very often. But it's really annoying to have to reset my workspaces whenever I do have to reboot. Changing the value in rc.xml and running openbox --reconfigure does not seem to have any effect. So what is obconf doing that I'm not (sends a dbus message perhaps [EDIT: watching with dbus-monitor I see no messages when changing the workspaces value in obconf])? I was hoping there would be a cleaner way to change the window manager than just running openbox --replace at login. So my questions are: Is there a better way to specify an alternate window manager (i.e. a way that doesn't cause the workspaces to break)? If not, how can I automatically set the number of workspaces back to 4? Update: I finally got around to trying what I commented on MrShunz's answer (adding WINDOW_MANAGER=/usr/bin/openbox to ~/.gnomerc). But the effect is the same as openbox --replace.

• Replacing files in a folder structure with files from an unsorted folder

  I have over 50,000 PDFs organized into folders in a file called PDFACT. I needed to compress these files so I ran them through Adobe to batch compress them and this worked—except Adobe could only output the files without their folder structure. So basically I have 50,000 PDFs set up in a folder with hundreds of subfolders, and everything was organized. I ended up with one folder with 50,000 compressed PDFs in it, just in alphabetical order. Somehow I need to replace all the orginal PDFs with their compressed copies. Let me give an example: In the folder PDFACT we have the following file: C:\PDFACT\BIG DINNER\BILL\NEWESTBILL.PDF … and in the output folder that Adobe created we have just: C:\COMPRESSED_PDF_FOLDER\NEWESTBILL.PDF This copy is smaller then the one in PDFACT and has the same name but it is just lumped in with every other PDF. The folder structure and subfolders are gone. Is there any way to replace all the larger uncompressed PDFS inside the orginal folder structure with their now compressed counterparts?

  I have a large number of large semicolon-separated data files. All string fields are surrounded by double quotes. In some of the files, there are extra quotes in the string fields, which messes up the subsequent importing of the data for analysis (I'm importing to Stata). This code allows me to see the problematic quotes using gnu-awk: echo '"This";"is";1;"line" of" data";""with";"extra quotes""' | awk 'BEGIN { FPAT = "([^;]+)|(\"[^\"]+\")"}; {for ( i=1 ; i<=NF ; i++ ) if ($i ~ /^"(.*".*)+"$/) {print NR, $i}}' 1 "line" of" data" 1 ""with" 1 "extra quotes"" but I do not know how to replace them. I was thinking of doing the replace manually, but it turns out that there are several hundred matches in some of the files. I know about awk's -sub-, -gsub-, and -match- functions, but I am not sure how to design a search and replace for this specific problem. In the example above, the respective fields should be "This", "is", 1, "line of data", "with", "extra quotes", that is: all semicolons are separators, and all quotes except for the outermost quotes should be removed. • PC won't post after replacing mobo

  I am trying to fix an older HP desktop (~2 yrs old) that didn't seem to have video working. The video card on the machine was integrated. After some debugging, it looked to be the mobo, so I went out and got a new one (also with integrated video). Now, it pretty much does the same thing. Here's the symptoms: no video, doesn't post at all, fans DO spin (both chasis and CPU). Any other ideas? I suppose it could be the CPU, but I would think if it was, it would at least post.

  One of the external NTP servers (the primary one--currently) we're using as source seems to not be responding to NTP calls. Unfortunately, on our core router (Cisco 6509), the NTP functionality hasn't switched to the secondary NTP external server as it was expected. As a result, our core router which is pretty much our main internal NTP source is 2 minutes late. I'm planning to fix the external router issue by making the external NTP source be the one currently working. I'm wondering, how much will a 2 minute change affect my users and services? Specially since these days, we're heavily relying on certificate-based authentication. We're a Windows/Cisco shop.   I'm head of the IT department at the small business I work for, however I am primarily a software architect and all of my system administration experience and knowledge is ancillary to software development. At some point this year or next we will be looking at upgrading our workstation environment to a uniform Windows 7 / Office 2010 environment as opposed to the hodge podge collection of various OEM licensed editions of software that are on each different machine. It occurred to me that it is probably possible to forgo upgrading each workstation and instead have it be a dumb terminal to access a virutalization server and have their entire virtual workstation hosted on the server. Now I know basically anything is possible but is this a feasible solution for a small business (25-50 work stations)? Assuming that this is feasible, what type of rough guidelines exist for calculating the required server resources needed for this. How exactly do solutions handle a user accessing their VM, do they log on normally to their physical workstation and then use remote desktop to access their VM, or is it usually done with a client piece of software to negotiate this? What types of software available for administering and monitoring these VM's, can this functionality be achieved out of box with Microsoft Server 2008? I'm mostly interested in these questions relating to Server 2008 with Hyper-V but fell free to offer insight with VMware's product line up, especially if there's any compelling reasons to choose them over Hyper-V in a Microsoft shop. Edit: Just to add some more information on implementation goals would be to upgrade our platform from a Win2k3 / XP environment to a full Windows 2008 / Win7 platform without having to perform any of that associated work with our each differently configured workstation. Also could anyone offer any realistic guidelines for how big of hardware is needed to support 25-50 workstations virtually? The majority the workstations do nothing except Office, Outlook and web. The only high demand workstations are the development workstations which would keep everything local.
