  Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! • Best choice for 3D Physics Engine for C#/XNA

  Since 2007 I've been working on the development of an open-source game engine, and have been using JigLibX for 3D Physics. However, the developers on the project have stopped contributing to it for over 2 years now, and it's lacking features I need, or have major bugs in certain features. What are some good choices for 3D physics engines that are written purely in C#? Are there any that are more complete than JigLibX? EDIT: I just stumbled upon an engine called BEPUphysics. It was supported up until May 2012, which is fairly recent. I may check it out, any information that you guys could give on how complete the engine is would be great.

• Programmatically Scroll Silverlight ListBox

• LDAP filter not being considered

  Hi there. I am performing an LDAP search query in C like so; ldap_search_ext_s(ld, BASEDN, SCOPE, FILTER, attrs, 0, NULL, NULL, NULL, LDAP_NO_LIMIT, &res); My search performs fine except when I try to specify FILTER to be; #define FILTER "uid=*", that is, when I try to run a search for all LDAP entries with a uid. Unfortunately my code just returns the first entry for each result that it finds. So, my code might find 50 results, but will return the first entry 50 times. Can anyone suspect what I might be doing wrong here? EDIT: I am stepping through my results like so: for (msg = ldap_first_message(ld, res); msg != NULL; msg = ldap_next_message(ld, msg)) Any help is really appreciated. Ricky.

• Data loss when downloading data from LDAP server

  Hi there. This question comes from a previous one I asked about handling NSData objects: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2453785/converting-nsdata-to-an-nsstring-representation-is-failing. I have reached the point where I am taking an NSImage, turning it into NSData and uploading those data bytes to the LDAP server. • Printing multiple pages per sheet doesn't work

  In Ubuntu 12.04, I added a network printer which I had previously used without any problems on a different machine (with the same release of Ubuntu). Now, with the default generic driver installed, printing multiple pages per sheet from evince doesn't work properly. If I select 2 per sheet, be it long or short edge, it always prints 4. Why is this? It used to happen with non-pdf documents in the past, like from a browser. My workaround was to print to pdf file and then print the pdf itself. Now I'm clueless... Edit: the same happens with a different network printer, in which I installed the driver specific to its particular model.

• How do I add a network printer in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I know the name and the IP address of a network printer, but I can't seem to be able to search by IP address or name. Ubuntu developers love to move things around to make it difficult for users, so now with Ubuntu 12.04 I can only go on Application -> System Tools -> System Settings -> Printers, click on Network and a list of printers appears. Too bad the one I want to add isn't there. How do I do it? Here it suggests System -> Administration -> Printing, which simply doesn't exist.

• Multiple Object Instantiation

  I am trying to get my head around object oriented programming as it pertains to web development (more specifically PHP). I understand inheritance and abstraction etc, and know all the "buzz-words" like encapsulation and single purpose and why I should be doing all this. But my knowledge is falling short with actually creating objects that relate to the data I have in my database, creating a single object that a representative of a single entity makes sense, but what are the best practises when creating 100, 1,000 or 10,000 objects of the same type. for instance, when trying to display a list of the items, ideally I would like to be consistent with the objects I use, but where exactly should I run the query/get the data to populate the object(s) as running 10,000 queries seems wasteful. As an example, say I have a database of cats, and I want a list of all black cats, do I need to set up a FactoryObject which grabs the data needed for each cat from my database, then passes that data into each individual CatObject and returns the results in a array/object - or should I pass each CatObject it's identifier and let it populate itself in a separate query.

• How to translate formulas into form of natural language?

  I am recently working on a project aiming at evaluating whether an android app crashes or not. The evaluation process is 1.Collect the logs(which record the execution process of an app). 2.Generate formulas to predict the result (formulas is generated by GP) 3.Evaluate the logs by formulas Now I can produce formulas, but for convenience for users, I want to translate formulas into form of natural language and tell users why crash happened.(I think it looks like "inverse natural language processing".) To explain the idea more clearly, imagine you got a formula like this: 155 - count(onKeyDown) >= 148 It's obvious that if count(onKeyDown) 7, the result of "155 - count(onKeyDown) = 148" is false, so the log contains more than 7 onKeyDown event would be predicted "Failed". I want to show users that if onKeyDown event appears more than 7 times(155-148=7), this app will crash. However, the real formula is much more complicated, such as: (< !( ( SUM( {Att[17]}, Event[5]) <= MAX( {Att[7]}, Att[0] >= Att[11]) OR SUM( {Att[17]}, Event[5]) > MIN( {Att[12]}, 734 > Att[19]) ) OR count(Event[5]) != 1 ) > (< count(Att[4] = Att[3]) >= count(702 != Att[8]) + 348 / SUM( {Att[13]}, 641 < Att[12]) mod 587 - SUM( {Att[13]}, Att[10] < Att[15]) mod MAX( {Att[13]}, Event[2]) + 384 > count(Event[10]) != 1)) I tried to implement this function by C++, but it's quite difficult, here's the snippet of code I am working right now. • Requiring multithreading/concurrency for implementation of scripting language

  Here's the deal: I'm looking at designing my own scripting/interpreted language for fun. I'm only in the planning stages right now; I want to make sure I have a very strong hold on exactly how I will implement everything before I start coding. What I'm currently struggling with is concurrency. It seems to me like an easy way to avoid the unpredictable performance that comes with garbage collection would be to put the garbage collector in its own thread, and have it run concurrently with the interpreter itself. (To be clear, I don't plan to allow the scripts to be multithreaded themselves; I would simply put a garbage collector to work in a different thread than the interpreter.) This doesn't seem to be a common strategy for many popular scripting languages, probably for portability reasons; I would probably write the interpreter in the UNIX/POSIX threading framework initially and then port it to other platforms (Windows, etc.) if need be. Does anyone have any thoughts in this issue? Would whatever gains I receive by exploiting concurrency be nullified by the portability issues that will inevitably arise? (On that note, am I really correct in my assumption that I would experience great performance gains with a concurrent garbage collector?) Should I move forward with this strategy or step away from it?

• Change clock resolution to 1000 Hz

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I need to change the clock resolution to 1000 Hz (now it's 250 Hz, the default value). I understand that I have to set it and then recompile the kernel, as for example described here. It's not clear, though, how I can do it from the terminal, as for instance the suggested make menuconfig won't work. Any tips? • How to get soci.h?

  I have some problem with web-site design. I can understand CSS, I use CSS grid frameworks, etc. But I can't realize my ideas. If I have some template, I can to translate it to HTML and CSS, but I don't understand how to begin with web-design for web-site from scratch.   My monitor (a Planar, apparently model number PL1910M) is not working. (It is flashing a green / orange sequence which I believe to be an error code. The sequence, in case it helps consists of orange and green three times quickly followed by a longer orange, then another green followed by a long period where both colors appear to be present). I vaguely recall a co-worker suffering from a similar problem, and our IT department "resetting" the monitor by holding down a certain set of keys as they apply power. Unfortunately, I do not remember what that key sequence was, our IT department is not responding, and the Planar web site is blocked by the content filtering firewall we have in place! What is the sequence to perform the reset? (For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

• Why might my Fedora 15 live USB persistent storage not work?

  I created a Fedora 15 "live" USB stick using the live USB creator found at https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/ and the Fedora 15 i686 Desktop ISO image with the persistent storage space set to 4096MB. (The USB stick I have available has an 8GB capacity, so there should be plenty of space.) Fedora appears to boot correctly, however it seems that the persistent storage is not working. To verify this, I opened a terminal prompt, then did su - followed by yum update yum. As expected, I was informed that a new version was available. (The live CD contains version 3.2.29-4, at the time of typing 3.2.29-6 is the current version). After installing, I verified that the new version was installed by typing yum --version. I then shutdown the system using shutdown now. After the system had shut down, I rebooted and returned to the terminal prompt. On typing yum --version, I was informed that the version was 3.2.29-4 (i.e. the original version). Why might the persistent storage not be working? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

• What do you need to know to get a job as a web developer [closed]

  What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.

• Is there any way to change the VirtualBox "snapshot" folder for an existing virtual machine?

  I have a virtual machine which is currently using a folder on the C: drive to store its snapshots. I have copied the contents of the "Snapshots" folder to an alternate drive, but whenever I go into the General / Advanced settings section for that virtual machine and change the snapshot folder to the new location it resets back to the original location. What do I need to do to get VirtualBox to recognize the new location for the snapshot files?

  So once again I have a question about this program. I want to store transactions that are made in an arraylist and then have an option in the case menu where I can print out those that are stored. I have been researching online and have been unable to find a solution to this, so is this possible and how would I go about doing this? I also want to attach a timestamp to each transaction as well. • Unable to load UIView with initWithNibName in Apple SDK 3.1.3

  I am trying to load my UIViewController and corresponding UIView programmatically in the AppDelegate class. What is funny is that it worked before and then just stopped working. I am wondering if this is a bug in iPhone SDK 3.1.3??? This is a really annoying issue, and I was quite a ways along in a new project when I started having this problem and had to start over with a blank project and copy over all of my resources, when it started happening again... I have uninstalled iPhone OS 3.1.3 and reinstalled and the problem prevails... I also created a second UIViewController class and corresponding nib which DOES LOAD just fine... I am not sure why one works and the other doesn't it... You can download a sample project which demonstrates this issue at the following link: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmhnmhbeyki To switch back and forth between the working/nonworking UIViewController and UIView simply comment comment/comment out the initWithNibLine lines in the AppDelegate and the corresponding #import "MainController.h" statements in the appdelegate.h file... • XStream JavaBeanConverter not serializing properties

  Hello All, Attempting to use XStream's JavaBeanConverter and running into an issue. Most likely I'm missng something simple, or not understanding XStream's converter handling well enough. @XStreamAlias("test") public class TestObject { private String foo; public String getFoo() { return foo; } public void setFoo(String foo) { this.foo = foo; } } public void test() throws Exception { XStream x = new XStream(new XppDriver()); x.autodetectAnnotations(true); x.processAnnotations(TestObject.class); x.registerConverter(new JavaBeanConverter(x.getMapper())); TestObject o = new TestObject(); o.setFoo("bar"); String xml = x.toXML(o); System.out.println(xml); /* Expecting... <test> <foo>bar</foo> </test> But instead getting... <test> <foo/> </test> */ } I tried adding a trace on the TestObject.getFoo() method and it appears it is being called by XStream, but the data isn't being written to the output stream. After looking at the source for JavaBeanConverter, it looks like my implementation should work, which leads me to believe I haven't configured something correctly during the XStream setup. Am I just missing something simple? Thanks!
