  • Script to establish SSH tunnel and then run another program that uses the tunnel

    I am running a GUI app (Gnucash) that connects to a remote Postgres database via a secure shell session. I can use the SSH -L command to tunnel a local port and then separately run Gnucash and this works fine. What I'd like to do is use a single shell script that sets up the tunnel and then calls Gnucash. Is that possible? If so, how do I do it? Currently, I run commands like the following in 2 separate terminal windows: ssh -L 5433:127.0.0.1:19097 [email protected] gnucash postgres://gnucash@localhost:5433/gnucash_db If I simply put both lines in a shell script, the first line drops me into the remote shell and the second line doesn't execute until I exit the remote shell.   • Invisible mouse cursor

    There have been some similar posts but nothing specific to me. Sometimes i boot my laptop and all is well. Other times I boot up and after the login screen my mouse cursor disappears, I can still use it, its just invisible. I start up fire fox and the cursor is visible but only on the application window.... My sysetem is: samsung R60 Plus, with 4gb ram and a T7500, using the ati Xpress 1250 graphics. This is with Ubuntu 11.10. Does any one know of a work around? Many thanks Rob,

  • Industry Reports on Source Control Tools

    Hi, I'm looking for independent industry reports that compare and contrast the various source control tools out there. In particular, I care about Clearcase vs Sourcesafe vs SVN, but if the report includes other SCM systems that's fine. I need this for a client who wants to get a feel on exactly what they stand to gain switching to SVN (yes, from Clearcase and VSS). In other words, something I can use to sell it to their business.   • A whole site for reviewing of SQL Server MVP Deep Dives

    This book just keeps amazing me. Not only as I read through some chapters for the first time, and others for the second and third times, but also as I read reviews of it written by other people. The guys over at http://sqlperspectives.wordpress.com are a prime example. They’ve been going through each chapter, each writing a review on it, and often getting a guest blogger to write something as well – and they’re clearly getting a lot of stuff out of this brilliant book. Back when I first heard about them doing this, I had offered to be involved, and recently did an interview with them about my chapters (chapter seven and chapter forty). That interview can be found at http://sqlperspectives.wordpress.com/2010/03/20/interview-with-rob-farley/ – and covers how I got into databases, and how I think the database roles in the IT industry are changing. If you don’t have a copy of SQL Server MVP Deep Dives yet, why not get a copy from http://www.sqlservermvpdeepdives.com (or persuade your local bookstore to get some copies in), and read through chapters with these guys? Treat it like a book club, discussing each chapter with others (guest blogging perhaps?), and you’ll probably end up getting even more out of it. Remember that the proceeds of the book go to charity (instead of the authors – we get nothing), so you don’t need to consider that you’re splashing out on a treat for yourself.     I want to publish articles at a multilingual site. I want to be able to write an article in two languages and have them available on separate URLs: thesite.foo/english-breakfast thesite.com/engelsk-frukost If the users web browser is set to English I'd like to show a small notice at the top of the Swedish version with a link to the English one. The link should have an appropriate rel attribute for a translation (search for hreflang at http://diveintohtml5.org/semantics.html). There should be a way to list all articles belonging to these sets: Swedish only, English only, Swedish versions + English only, English versions + Swedish only. I'd like to publish these as four RSS-feeds. And I would like to have two versions of the main site, one in Swedish (showing Swedish versions + English only) and one in English (showing English versions). I shall be able to write the articles using Markdown, as that is the formatting language I find most convenient. There should be a way for users to comment. And some kind of way for me to protect myself against comment spam. I am leaning towards learning Drupal. I suspect I'll have to code this behavior myself as a module. To be frank I'd rather work with Java. Is Drupal the way to go? Or is there something more suitable for this project?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 with latest updates (including kernel 2.6.32-26). I have an Intel X-25M drive with latest firmware, and it is formatted as ext4. So, does TRIM support run automatically? If not, how do I check if I need to run it, and then how do I run it if necessary?

  • Text box select issue

    I have this issue where the entire text in text boxes is selected whilst I'm typing in it. For example, in FireFox search box I'd try to type "foo" but end up with "o" because I managed to type "fo" before everything was selected, and then typed "o" which replaced the "fo". When it happens, it is incessant - not just a one-off. But it doesn't happen all the time, and I haven't managed to figure out what causes it to start and stop. Is this a known problem with an easy solution? EDIT: this has nothing to do with touchpad. I get this occasionally even on a machine without one. I can usually rectify the issue just be alt-tabbing about a few times.

    I would like to know how the installer, and in particular the guided partitioning for Ubuntu Server 12.04 works under the hood. I'm not interested in documentation, I want to check out the real scripts and the logic in them. How do you recommend I dig into this? Where on the ISO are these parts located? I don't know what the installer for Ubuntu is called, or how it is configured. I am well versed in programming languages and command line GNU/Linux.

    I want to create a Greasemonkey script for GMail and I've browsed through the GMail Greasemonkey 1.0 API documentation. I haven't fully understood what the API actually provides, which leads me to ask a few concrete questions. How will the API help if I want to: Add a button to the Compose view which executes some of my code. Compose and send a new message from scratch. List the current drafts. Pick a draft and send it. From what I can see it'll help me with 1 above, but I don't see any real interaction API parts which can help me with 2-4.

  • Windows 7 machine, can't connect remotely until after ping

    I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine that doubles as a media centre and subversion server. There's a couple of problems with this setup, when connecting to the server from an XP (SP3) machine: Firstly, the machine won't respond to it's machine name until after it's IP address has been pinged. Here's an example: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Ping request could not find host damascus.     Hi - Running the install.sh script as-is from Virtualmin (GPL version), I get a dovecot error after about 5.5mins of installation. I have tried this on several versions of the server - same error whether or not I run apt-get update +/- apt-get upgrade .... and whether or not I have the FQDN set.   • Implication of variable context switching time

    Hi, I know that constant switching time of the Linux scheduler was a big achievement. I was just asking myself the question what would be the implication of a non-constant switching time. The only obvious reason I can think of is real-time systems where we have to meet deadlines. There it is obviously no ideal if the switching time is "random".   • PowerShell - grabbing values out of the registry and running them

    So I closed an application that runs when Windows starts up, but it doesn’t have a Start Menu entry, and I was trying to find it. Ok, I could’ve run regedit.exe, navigated through the tree and found the list of things that run when Windows starts up, but I thought I’d use PowerShell instead. PowerShell presents the registry as if it’s a volume on a disk, and you can navigate around it using commands like cd and dir. It wasn’t hard to find the folder I knew I was after – tab completion (starting the word and then hitting the Tab key) was a friend here. But unfortunately dir doesn’t list values, only subkeys (which look like folders). PS C:\Windows\system32> dir HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run PS C:\Windows\system32> Instead, I needed to use Get-Item to fetch the ‘Run’ key, and use its Property property. This listed the values in there for me, as an array of strings (I could work this out using Get-Member). PS C:\Windows\system32> (Get-Item HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).Property QuickSet SynTPEnh Zune Launcher PS C:\Windows\system32> Ok, so the thing I wanted wasn’t in there (an app called PureText, whicih lets me Paste As Text using Windows+V). That’s ok – a simple change to use HKCU instead of HKLM (Current User instead of Local Machine), and I found it. Now to fetch the details of the application itself, using the RegistryKey method GetValue PS C:\Windows\system32> (Get-Item HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).GetValue('PureText') "C:\Users\Rob\Utilities\PureText.exe" PS C:\Windows\system32> And finally, surrounding it in a bit of code to execute that command. That needs an ampersand and the Invoke-Expression cmdlet. PS C:\Windows\system32> '& ' + (Get-Item HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run).GetValue('PureText') | Invoke-Expression A simple bit of exploring PowerShell which will makes for a much easier way of finding and running those apps which start with Windows.
