• Will the Mac app store accept an app that reads and parses iPhone backups?

  I wanted to submit an app to the Mac app store that reads the iPhone backup dir and provides some useful functionality on user's voicemails and sms messages. The app parses and reads the backup mbdb files, and extracts the voicemail and sms sqlite db files as well as the voicemails to a temp directory. Is this kind of app likely to be rejected since it reads an unpublished format? It's not using any private APIs. I realize none of you are reviewers but wondering if I should even try to submit it to the store.

• When does Information become Data? (i.e. Information wants to be free) [closed]

  I hear Programmers often talk about how Information Wants To Be Free which I mostly agree with, but the thing that people don't often pay attention to is that Information and Data are not the same thing. Should Data also be free? Does that mean all of you should have full access to my Social Security Number and other personal "information"? Where is the limit? If there is a limit, why do people throw this phrase around like it fits every circumstance (like this one)

• Arguments for or against using Try/Catch as logical operators

  I just discovered some lovely code in our companies app that uses Try-Catch blocks as logical operators. Meaning, "do some code, if that throws this error, do this code, but if that throws this error do this 3rd thing instead". It uses "Finally" as the "else" statement it appears. I know that this is wrong inherently, but before I go picking a fight I was hoping for some well thought out arguments. And hey, if you have arguments FOR the use of Try-Catch in this manner, please do tell. EDIT For any who are wondering, the language is C# and the code in question is about 30+ lines and is looking for specific exceptions, it is not handling ALL exceptions.

• Adding multiple byte arrays in c# [migrated]

  I'm working on a legacy system that uses byte arrays for permission levels. Example: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 means they have "Full Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 means they have "Add Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 means they have "Delete Control" So, if a User has "00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07" that means they have all 3 (as far as it has been explained to me). Now, my question is that I need to know how to get to "0x07" when creating/checking records. I don't know the syntax for actually combining 0x01, 0x02 and 0x04 so that I come out with 0x07.

• How is this word document encoded?

  Hi all, We have a program that was written for us by a developer that we can no longer contact, the program opens word documents (forms) that we use in our company, you can tell they are Word documents as the 'Word' toolbar displays with this custom program and we can see the .doc files on the hard drive, the Save button is disabled in the program and when we open the .doc files in word the encoding is not standard as the forms are unreadable but look perfect in the custom program. If we can word out how he has done this we can hopefully convert the 100's of forms that we use. One of the .doc files can be download below, I've scanned it for viruses, it's clean. • Memory usage on debian webserver keeps going up

  my webserver is running apache 1.3.x for a PHP application, along with mysql on the same machine. Most of the time it runs fine, CPU usage still with nice margin, but somehow memory usage keeps growing throughout uptime. While it looks like it is chunked from time to time, I've had moments my server going down because it's out of memory. Restarting apache or mysql only reduced memusage by 100M. Attached is an overview of monthly memory usage.   Hi! We're using CVS, on every release we have to synchronise two different branches of code, and in every release cycle it's the same story, whitespace problems causing errors and wasting time. I'm looking for a way to automatically strip out trailing whitespace upon committing a file to CVS, unless explicitly forbidden, say by a command-line option. Is there a solution already available?   Early in my career, when I wanted to learn a new technology, I’d sit in the bookstore aisle and I’d work my way through each of the available books on the given subject.  Put in enough time in a bookstore and you can learn just about anything. I used to really enjoy my time in the bookstore – but times have certainly changed.  Whereas books used to be the only place I could find solutions to my problems, now they may be the very last place I look.  I have been working with the ASP.NET MVC Framework for more than a year.  I have a few projects and a couple of major deployments under my belt and I was able to get up to speed with the framework without reading a single book*.  With so many resources at our fingertips (podcasts, screencasts, blogs, stackoverflow, open source projects, www.asp.net, you name it) why bother with a book? Well, I flipped through Steven Sanderson’s Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework a few months ago. And since it is prominently displayed in my co-worker’s office, I tend to pick it up as a reference from time to time.  Last week, I’m not sure why, I decided to read it cover to cover.  Man, did I eat this book up.  Granted, a lot of what I read was review, but it was only review because I had already learned lessons by piecing the puzzle together for myself via various sources. If I were starting with ASP.NET MVC (or ASP.NET Web Deployment in general) today, the first thing I would do is buy Steven Sanderson’s Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework and read it cover to cover. Steven Sanderson did such a great job with this book! As much as I appreciated the in-depth model, view, and controller talk, I was completely impressed with all the extra bits which were included.  There a was nice overview of BDD, view engine comparisons, a chapter dedicated to security and vulnerabilities, IoC, TDD and Mocking (of course), IIS deployment options and a nice overview of what the .NET platform and C# offers.  Heck, Sanderson even include bits about webforms! The book is fantastic and I highly recommend it – even if you think you’ve already got your head around ASP.NET MVC.  By the way, procrastinators may be in luck.  ASP.NET MVC V2 Framework can be pre-ordered.  You might want to jump right into the second edition and find out what Sanderson has to say about MVC 2. * Actually, I did read through the free bits of Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0.  But it was just a chapter – albeit a really long chapter.

• How to unit test C# Web Service with Visual Studio 2008

  How are you supposed to unit test a web service in C# with Visual Studio 2008? When I generate a unit test it adds an actual reference to the web service class instead of a web reference. It sets the attributes specified in: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms243399(VS.80).aspx#TestingWebServiceLocally Yet, it will complete without executing the test. • Objective-C (iPhone) Memory Management

  I'm sorry to ask such a simple question, but it's a specific question I've not been able to find an answer for. I'm not a native objective-c programmer, so I apologise if I use any C# terms! If I define an object in test.h @interface test : something { NSString *_testString; } Then initialise it in test.m -(id)init { _testString = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@"hello"]; } Then I understand that I would release it in dealloc, as every init should have a release -(void)dealloc { [_testString release]; } However, what I need clarification on is what happens if in init, I use one of the shortcut methods for object creation, do I still release it in dealloc? Doesn't this break the "one release for one init" rule? e.g. -(id)init { _testString = [NSString stringWithString:@"hello"]; } Thanks for your helps, and if this has been answered somewhere else, I apologise!! • Alignment of rollover item affected by position of header

• SQL 2008 Datawarehouse Collection Agent Fails with Mirrored Databases on instance

  I have a data collection job that fails when a Database on the instance is in Recovery Mode. The database in recovery is the MIRROR partner in the database mirror. The Job that fails is as follows. collection_set_1_noncached_collect_and_upload The job consists of the following steps dcexec -u -s 1 -i "INSTANCE03" EXEC [dbo].[sp syscollector purge collection logs] dcexec -u -s 1 -i "INSTANCE03" The job fails at Step 1. I have run the steps manually and they all appear to be ok. If I change the mirror database to be the principal the job completes successfully.

• Looking to replace Ghost with FSArchiver or Clonezilla, few questions about capabilities

  I work for a PC Repair company and we are looking into setting up a dedicated machine with externally accessible SATA bays to clone harddrives as a safety net incase something goes wrong during a repair. We currently use a SATA/PATA to USB bridge called MagicBridge and Norton Ghost on any workstation, but we're looking to move away from Ghost. We have a computer with a large RAID5 array with Windows Server 2008 Standard currently installed, but this can be replaced with a flavour of *nix. I have some experience with Clonezilla, but FSArchiver also seems like a suitable replacment too. My Head Technician wants to know if my chosen solution (probably Clonezilla or FSArchiver, but I'm open to free suggestions) is capable of: Cloning a degraded RAID, such as a single drive from a RAID1 mirror without complaining Producing images that are easily mountable (he'd prefer them to be mountable in Windows, but if there is no other easy way, *nix should be fine) akin to Ghost Explorer so individual files can be restored as well as being able to do bare metal restores. My apologies for wordiness but I wanted to be thorough in my explaination. Thanks for any suggestions or tips :) EDIT: I've just found out that Clonezilla has a workaround for cloning RADI1 drives EDIT2: Found the answer to both of my questions, aparently I wasn't phrasing my searches right, could this question be deleted please?

• Are there any open source reseller packages?

  My department has just been given the right/responsibility to manage our own VPS. The idea being that the bureaucracy will be less for the many small web projects we run. Since each project will be managed by a different team, I was planning on approaching a shared hosting model. Are there any free pieces of software that would help automate the provision of resources each time a team request a new project? Most of the projects have identical requirements - basically LAMP - so it would be these resources that I would want provisioning (and de-provisioning, if that is a word) automatically. Ideally, there would also be a way to hook it into our LDAP authentication backend too, though I could probably make this sort of modification if necessary. Since we won't be charging our "client" however, we won't need the ability to generate invoices, handle payments, etc. etc. EDIT: Sample workflow Login authenticated against LDAP Username checked against admin group (not on central LDAP) Click 'new project' and enter project name User created on VPS with project name as username Apache virtual host created and subdomain (using project name) allocated FTP & MySQL users created

• No HDMI audio - Windows 8 - ASUS H81M-PLUS

  I have an issue with HDMI audio on Windows 8 using an ASUS H81M-PLUS motherboard (without an external GFX card). There are many forum posts advising you to go into playback devices and setting HDMI to be default - I have done this. To eliminate what works and what doesn't work: I have not been able to get sound from my HDTV using HDMI. I have used this HDMI cable with my PS3, so this cable should be fine. I am able to use the HDMI cable in extended mode, so that I have two monitors (including the TV), just no audio. This HDMI cable goes straight from the motherboard to the TV. Below I have included 'Device manager', and 'Playback Devices' (Sound). Device Manager Playback Devices, showing disabled and disconnected devices I am at a loss. I have uninstalled all drivers, and then rebooted and made windows look for the correct ones, made sure the HDMI device was default. Thanks, Paul

• How to create direct RS232 (PPP) connection from Windows 7

  I'm trying to create a direct connection to a hardware device via RS232 serial connection. Am using a USB to Serial adapter and works fine in WinXP but the option seems to have disappeared in Win7. This is the only connection option available for this piece of hardware so I have no choice. Currently have a netbook with WinXP installed purely for interfacing with this hardware. In XP it was just a matter of creating an "Advanced connection" and then "Directly to another computer" etc, I can find no such options in Win7.

• Emacs eshell over SSH not obeying key commands or elisp

  When SSHing to a remote server Eshell doesn't behave very well, e.g: M-x eshell ssh server <tab> *inserts literal tab instead of trying to complete* Hitting <tab>, for instance, inserts a literal tab. Is there no way to get tab completion, lisp interaction (like find-file blah) etc. over SSH? All the documentation I've read says Eshell is "TRAMP-aware", which I assume meant it could deal with this. Am I just wrong in my assumption that it would work over SSH, or is something broken? This is on Emacs 24.0.94 pretest.

• Using Windows as a gateway to the internet

  My customer currently blocks outbound RDP and SSH, which means that none of their employees can get access to external Windows and Linux boxes (at the console level). However, a need has recently arisen to give access to an assortment of RDP and SSH endpoints scattered throughout the internet. The endpoint IP addresses are a moving target, and an access list exists to define what those IP addresses are. So now my customer wants to have a single Windows Server that they control as the sole outbound point for RDP/SSH to the internet. Consider it a jump box to the internet. If one of our admins have an access to this Windows box then they can log on, and from there bounce around to RDP/SSH endpoints on the internet. Is a standard Windows 2008 box going to work as a jump box? For example, I seem to recall that Win2k8 limits the number of users that can log on simultaneously, which means that the jump box may not be accessible if lots of users are on it. Advice as to how to make this work..?

• Minecraft server hosting hardware specifications [on hold]

  I am planning on purchasing a server to rent off Minecraft game servers, largely to friends. I am planning on purchasing a 128GB RAM server to save on colocation costs (as I am likely to need more than 32GB and would have to rent 2U of space...) I am hoping for some advice about the processing power needed to deal with this level of RAM. The servers will be run in a shared environment on linux in a VM to make backups easier. The server I have in mind is dual CPU. I have been considering at the low end dual Xeon E5-2609V2 Quad-Core 2.5Ghz, and at the high end dual Xeon E5-2650V2 Eight-Core 2.6Ghz. The difference between these is 6.4 GT/s and 8 GT/s and £3000 for the lower spec server, £4300 for the higher spec. I was hoping I could get advice about whether it is worth paying for the extra/higher speed processor or if I would be wasting my money? Thank you for any help - I appreciate that this is not directly related to professional system administration.
