• Suggestions for Future or On-The-Edge Languages (2011)

  I'm just looking for some suggestions on newer languages and language implementations that are useful for string manipulation. It's now 2011 and a lot has changed over the years. Most of my work includes web development (which is mostly text-based) and command line scripting. I'm pretty language agnostic, although I've felt violated using PHP over the years. My only requirements are that the language be good at text manipulation, without a lot of 3rd party libraries (core libraries are okay, though), and that the language and/or standard implementation is very up to date or even "futuristic". For example, the two main languages I'm looking at right now are Python (Version 3.x) or Perl (Version 6.x). Research, Academic, and Experimental languages are okay with me. I don't mind functional languages although I'd like to have the option of programming in a procedural or even object oriented manner. Thanks!

Currently we are making a decision of building applications and looking forward a expert suggestions. So in your workspace or in your projects, how often do you commit and build your java ee applications? Is it like once one milestone functionality is over you build and commit or is there any schedules (like everynight) to builds? We are planning to use Hudson as a build tool. Can you kindly guide me? En effet, un forum est pratique, mais ne vaut pas un réel système de bug tracker. De plus, le système de points ne reflète pas bien ce genre de participation : en effet les opposants à une suggestion n'hésitent pas à moinsser le message d'origine, faisant donc perdre des points à la personne qui suggère, et de plus un bug rapporté résolu ou une suggestion implémentée ne se traduisait par aucune espèce de récompense au niveau des points. Je trouve ceci anormal en sachant que toute idée certes n'est pas bonne à prendre suivant le contexte, mais que personne ne devrait être pénalisé pour avoir eu une idée.

  We have struggled in the past with different approaches of getting feedback from you as bloggers.  We really want to know what you would like to see, what other systems have that is helpful, and where we need to grow.  This community is made up of many different individuals so the system for feedback needed a voting or liking tool for us to gage what was a popular thought or just one guys request.  We would love to put every request in, but that would make the system function for some and unusable for others. • Syntax logic suggestions

  This syntax will be used inside HTML attributes. Here are a few examples of what I have so far: <input name="a" conditions="!b, c" /> <input name="b" /> <input name="c" /> This will make input "a" do something if b is not checked and c is checked (b and c are assumed to be checkboxes if they don't have a :value defined) <input name="a" conditions="!b:foo|bar, c:foo" /> <input name="b" /> <input name="c" /> This will make input "a" do something if bdoesn't have foo or bar values, and if c has the foo value. <input name="a" conditions="!b:EMPTY" /> <input name="b" /> Makes input "a" do something if b has a value assigned. So, essentially , acts as logical AND, : as equals (=), ! as NOT, and | as OR. The | (OR) is only needed between values (at least I think so), and AND is not needed between values for obvious reasons :) EMPTY means empty value, like <input value="" /> Do you have any suggestions on improving this syntax, like making it more human friendly? For example I think the "EMPTY" keyword is not really appropriate and should be replaced with a character, but I don't know which one to choose.

• Looking for suggestions: becoming a hireable, young programmer [closed]

  I am a 17 year old Java programmer that has filled the last year with learning all of the ins and outs of Java - Using Eclipse, and the help of a friend of the family (a Java programming architect for some company), I have learned everything from serializing objects, basic networking, generics, reflection, multi-threading, code optimization and efficiency & some concurrency safety - built my own proxy class, and nowadays, I answer questions on Project Euler. I am seeking some suggestions though on where I go next, or where I go from here to get a job in programming. I dedicate at least an hour every day to coding, sometimes literally, the entire day, and I really have come to love the process. I just started reading Effective Java (v2), and learning Scala (as I see often, possibly the Java replacement) I will be going to college for Computer Science next year - and taking AP computer science this year (however, I took a practice exam and got an 87, only need a 60to70 to pass, so no need to study for it too much) -- I was wondering if getting the SE 7 OCA and OCP would help me in trying to get a programming job. I looked around and most people have said online that an OCA/OCP are practically useless, but, at my age do they make me any more credible? More or less, what would you recommend to get a job in programming these days - or distinguish yourself from the crowd? I have enough time and dedication to learn another language, or anything really. Thank you very much.

• suggestions for lonewolf dev setup

  I'm looking for some suggestions for a better development setup. Background: I'm a crusty old software engineer (mostly java of late) and I have around 50 - 100 incomplete java projects scattered everywhere, usb keys, HDDs, and spanning across 5 or 6 computers etc, which have been put on hold for a few years (ie: family). I have no version control at home. I've been using IntelliJ for around 10 years, so that's the only constant. I'm thinking of nominating one machine as a headless server to put all my projects on, maybe a ubuntu box, that way It won't matter which device I'm on, all my projects can be accessed (and I don't have to waste time actually looking for them). I don't need to access code over the net. These are my own 'happy place' projects so I only work on them when I'm at home, however I can see the benefit of the tasking app being online, that way if I think of something while on public transport lets say, I can add it then & there, but it's not a requirement. I can wait until I get home to create tasks. Summary: So I need some sort of version control so I can rollback mistakes, and some sort of simple tasking software where I can assign tasks for myself later on when I get time. I use Subversion, Sonar, Jira and Crucible at work but I think it's a little bit of an overkill for me though. What do you suggest?

• Suggestions for connecting .NET WPF GUI with Java SE Server

  BACKGROUND We are building a Java (SE) trading application which will be monitoring market data and sending trade messages based on the market data, and also on user defined configuration parameters. We are planning to provide the user with a thin client, built in .NET (WPF) for managing the parameters, controlling the server behavior, and viewing the current state of the trading. The client doesn't need real-time updates; it will instead update the view once every few seconds (or whatever interval is configured by the user). The client has about 6 different operations it needs to perform with the server, for example: CRUD with configuration parameters query subset of the data receive updates of current positions from server It is possible that most of the different operations (except for receiving data) are just different flavors of managing the configuration parameters, but it's too early in our analysis for us to be sure. To connect the client with the server, we have been considering using: SOAP Web Service RESTful service building a custom TCP/IP based API (text or xml) (least preferred - but we use this approach with other applications we have) As best as I understand, pros and cons of the different web service flavors are: SOAP pro: totally automated in .NET (and Java), modifying server side interface require no code changes in communication layer, just running refresh on Web Service reference to regenerate the classes. con: more overhead in the communication layer sending more text, etc. We're not using J2EE container so maybe doesn't work so well with J2SE REST pro: lighter weight, less data. Has good .NET and Java support. (I don't have any real experience with this, so don't know what other benefits it has.) con: client will not be automatically aware if there are any new operations or properties added (?), so communication layer needs to be updated by developer if server interface changes. con: (both approaches) Server cannot really push updates to the client at regular intervals (?) (However, we won't mind if client polls the server to get updates.) QUESTION What are your opinions on the above options or suggestions for other ways to connect the 2 parts? (Ideally, we don't want to put much work into the communication layer, because it's not the significant part of the application so the more off-the-shelf and automated the better.)

• Suggestions for getting an open source electron beam tracking code going

  I work in the field of accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation. High energy electrons circulating in large rings of magnets produce x-rays that are used for a variety of different kinds of science. Running and improving these facilities requires controlling and modelling the electron beam as it circulates in the ring. A code to model this basically requires trackers to follow the electrons through the elements (something called a symplectic integrator), and then the computation of different parameters associated with this motion. The problem with these codes is that every facility has there own. In principle the code is not so complex. And as a modelling project, one might think it has some general interest. Who doesn't want to be able to create a track in space out of magnets and watch the electrons circulate? There is a Matlab based code to do this called Accelerator Toolbox, but the creator of the code is no longer in the field. I put the code in Sourceforge under the name atcollab. The basic resource is in C- it is the set of symplectic integrators. These are available in the atcollab code here. It has been useful to put the code on Sourceforge in order to exchange code, but the community of users is quite small and most are too busy to put that much time into collaboration. So in terms of really improving the code, I don't think it has been so successful. Any piece of this picture could be recreated without that much difficulty, but overall it is a bit complex, and because each lab has their own installation with lots of add-on Matlab code, people find it hard to really work together and share code. Somehow I think we need to involve a wider community in our development, or just use some standard tools. But for that, I suppose it needs to be of some general interest. I think symplectic integrators may have some general interest. And the part about a plug-in architecture to build up the ring ought to fit other patterns. Or the other option is to just accept that this is not a problem of general interest, and work harder within our small community. Suggestions, or anecdotes of analogous experience would be appreciated.

• How can I find the approximate daily traffic of a site which I don't own?

  I want to find the approximate daily traffic of a site which isn't ours, and the site is located in other country than US (in Greece - hence no Quantcast or Compete.com afaik) and it doesn't use Google Ads (hence no Google Ad Planner). I know about Alexa but the site(s) has/have relatively low traffic and the Alexa's rank isn't very useful (same stands to Google Trends). Or perhaps I should look more at Alexa's data? Any other ideas? PS: I looked before posting here and here. No luck.

• What about introduction to programming with C# via LINQPad?

  From different questions/answers/articles in this and some other sites, I got the idea that the introductory language for programming should be- High level Less verbose C# is one of the heavily used high level languages being used these days. It's also multi-paradigm and descendant of C, the lingua-franca of all programming languages. So, I think it has the potential to be the introductory programming language. But I felt it's a bit verbose for the novice learners. Then LINQPad came into my mind. With LINQPad, someone can start with C# without it's verbosity. Because you can just run one statement or few statements or a standalone function with LINQPad. Again you can run a full source file also. Another thing it provide is- using SQL. So, it can be used for learning SQL too. And not to mention, it's free. So, what you guys think about the idea of introducing programming with C# via LINQPad? Any thing to watch out? Any suggestion?

  I'm the type of developer that only uses GUI fully-featured programmer editor, when I'm at Windows I use Notepad++, at my Mac I use TextMate and at Linux I use GEdit, but now I'm starting to develop inside my Linux server, which doesn't have any window manager installed and I saw this as a beautiful time to learn how to use Vim, which I always had problems to understand, I can't even open a file to edit at Vim, so I want to know: Which is the best eBook for a very beginner on this editor to learn how to use it? • Should I learn GWT (I'm a Java newb) if I eventually want to learn JavaScript and related libraries?

  I haven't been working with Java for a long time, and I found GWT to be interesting plus a chance to learn and practice Java. My goal for this year is to learn JavaScript. I'm very interested in HTML5, browser extensions and other cool stuff that JavaScript can do. I think I'm more interested in this than Java at the moment (that's not to say I dislike or would discontinue working with Java) but I would like advice as to whether it's a good idea to proceed with learning GWT (given my interest in JavaScript) or to spend my time learning other Java technology. • Suggestions on switching from lamp based web design-development to game design-development

  I have around 2.5 years of experience as a web developer cum designer working mainly on the LAMP platform. Now, I want to try out game development (of the likes of First Person Shooter games like Call of Duty (COD)). It is one of my dreams to some day succeed in making a profitable, popular, commercial game of this type. However, I have never done any kind of business nor even freelancing yet even in the web domain. Okay, first things first, I am just starting and I don't yet have any idea about the technologies, languages, engines (game engines) etc involved in that. I would like this question to be a complete guide for people with similar interests. Best resources for getting hold really fast What would be the best approach to get the basic hold of the domain really fast? Any resource(s) for programmers coming from other domains/experienced in other domains would be the ideal ones for me. E.g., if anybody would ask me some good resource for quickly learning PHP/Mysql, I would suggest books like "How to do everything with PHP & MySql" - because - it introduces all the basics of the domain (not the advanced things which can be later learnt by practice and also a lot by searching in stackoverflow questions) it contains some very nice working projects in the end, which help in applying the skills learnt in the chapters of the book. This is the best way for self learners, I feel. I would appreciate some similar resource which connects all concepts together to get the bigger picture. I have read about C, C++, C#, JAVA being used in game programming but not sure which language to go for (I have previously learnt a little of C and JAVA). I have also read about game engines but there would be various other concepts. Commonly accepted ways of learning Should 3D games like these be tried after 2D games? Are there some commonly accepted ways of learning such kind of games? Like in web development, we should go for frameworks after practising well with basic language, AJAX after getting properly done with simple page-reload processing etc. Apart from these, any useful tips (like language choices etc.) would be much appreciated. • Suggestions for html tag info required for jQuery Plugin

  I have written a tiny bit of jQuery which simply selects all the Select form elements on the page and sets the selected property to the correct value. Previously I had to write code to generate the Select in php and specify the Selected attribute for the option that was selected or do loads of if statements in my php page or smarty template. Obviosly the information about what option is selected still needs to be specified somewhere in the page so the jQuery code can select it. I decided to create a new attribute on the Select item <Select name="MySelect" SelectedOption="2"> <-- Custom Attr SelectedOption <option value="1">My Option 1 </option> <option value="2">My Option 2 </option> <-- this option will be selected when jquery code runs <option value="3">My Option 3 </option> <option value="4">My Option 4 </option> </Select> Does anyone see a problem with using a custom attribute to do this, is there a more accepted way, or a better jquery way?

  As a company we now have Facebook, LinkedIN, Twitter and now Google+, is there a way to easily manage all these accounts without having to log into them individually? Things like posting content to each one is becoming a full time job in itself, is there a way to post once that in turn posts to all other accounts? • serious 404 problem, suggestions for hunting them all down

  I have a bit of a situation coming up. Due to a complete website structure redesign that is basically inevitable, I expect to have the following: Our sitemap of about 12,000 url's have about 90-95% of them change Out of those 12,000, I expect around 5000-6000 internal links to go dead in the process. No external links to this site yet, as it is still in development. Is there a tool out there that can do the following: I can feed the sitemap.xml after the restructuring have it parse each pages links for 404 errors on that page only report the pages/errors, preferably with just the url it is on, the url of the error, and the anchor text I have found a few tools, but all of them seem to be limited to 100 pages. Any advice for an intermediate webmaster to help this situation? 301 redirects are not viable in this situation.
