• Suggestions for accessing SQL Server from internet

  i need to be able to access a customer's SQL Server, and ideally their entire LAN, remotely. They have a firewall/router, but the guy responsible for it is unwilling to open ports for SQL Server, and is unable to support PPTP forwarding. The admin did open VNC, on a non-stanrdard port, but since they have a dynamic IP it is difficult to find them all the time. In the past i have created a VPN connection that connects back to our network. But that didn't work so well, since when i need access i have to ask the computer-phobic users to double-click the icon and press Connect i did try creating a scheduled task that attempts to keep the VPN connection back to our office up at all times by running: >rasdial "vpn to me" But after a few months the VPN connection went insane, and thought it was both, and neither, connected an disconnected; and the vpn connection wouldn't work again until the server was rebooted. Can anyone think of a way where i can access the customer's LAN that doesn't involve opening ports on the router needing to know their external IP customer interaction of any kind Blah blah blah use vpn vnc protocol has known weaknesses you are unwise to lower your defenses it's not wise to expose SQL Server directly to the internet you stole that line from Empire Customer doesn't care about any of that. • TCP Tweaking options and Results: Any suggestions?

  I first tried with the default windows XP TCP option(It doesn't have TCPWindowSize option and TCP1323 in its Registry setting). I dynamically set those options using TCP optimizer. Here I list out the result with and without TCP Tweaking option. I see no major improvements in TCP after increasing window size optimally too. What value should I set to increase the performance?   Can you suggest a good battery meter utility for Windows? Battery status being graphically displayed in the taskbar is the (obvious) minimum requirement. Anything else the utility can inform or do is a plus. (If the battery meter taskbar icon is turned off by an admin it does not appear for non-admin users. That could be another reason to look for a battery meter utility apart from the one which comes with Windows.)

• Suggestions on the best home server rack cabinet

  I have a lot of gear in a colocation facility right now. Some of it is going to come home with me now. I do not know anything about the "rack mount" side of the industry. I lease a rack, and I put my stuff in it. I have a few 1U boxes, a few 2U boxes, and a few 4U boxes. 1U switch. One is a new Xserve, which means it is deep. I think I can get by with around 12U to 18U. I want to keep it as small as possible, since I do not have a lot of spare space at my home. I will not be able to bolt to the wall, floor etc, so it should not be tall. This is something I would love to more or less just be a box that sits on the floor but gives me the ability to mount nicely, do nice cable management etc. Are the "post" style racks junk? I am liking the open space, and the no limitations on depth of something like this: http://www.rackmountsolutions.net/images/products/Martin-relay-rack.jpg However, that thing is way too tall, and probably way too expensive. I am looking to be around $300.00 or less. More if I have to, though I would prefer not to. These look near perfect: (See comment for this link, the system will not let me post a second url) but I am worried the Xserve will not fit in it. If anyone has any good links, or website recommendations of good past experience, I would appreciate it. I am almost considering that I may be able to build something with random scraps of stuff at Home Depot as well.

Allows the drawer to move in and out. Easy installation would be nice. Inexpensive (<$100) would be nice, but I'll consider expensive ones if they meet all of the above.

• Suggestions for Troubleshooting WIndows 7 lockups

  I've got a Dell Latitude E6500 that was working fine under Vista x64. I got one of the new Seagate 500GB Hybrid SSD/HD 2.5 drives and thought.. hmm.. let's try Win 7 x64 on it. Bottom line: It works great for hours and then it will hard lock. I don't mean BSOD (or whatever the Win7 equivalent is). I mean my screen is displaying a static image (if there is a clock displayed, it will be frozen at the time the lockup occurred) and the mouse and keyboard do not work. Control-Alt-Delete will not work. I have to hold down the power button to reboot. The event log records NOTHING at the time the lockup occurs. Obviously something is happening to the system to cause the lockup, but the default Windows 7 x64 doesn't log it. How can I log the things Windows doesn't normally log in Event Viewer ?

  I would like to buy a small embedded system that runs Linux and Asterisk. I would like two FXS ports ( to plug analogue phones into ) and one FXO port ( to plug in to my real line to allow access to the POTS ). I would like it to have a USB port to hold storage for voicemail. I really want it for home use so I would like it to be under £150 ( say $250 ), given that you can buy ADSL routers for around this much can any of them be made to run Linux and Asterisk? I don't want a PC as the power usage would be too high. I am looking for something like this ASDL router but open and able to run Asterisk or another open PBX. At worst I would like a box which had one FXO and two FXS and just made them completely available over IP to a full Asterisk system on a low power Atom system.

• Suggestions on providing HA access to an external (fibre) RAID subsystem

  We are looking at upgrading our storage capacity with an external RAID subsystem that has redundant (2) fibre controllers, each controller has 4 x 8 Gbps fibre ports. I would like to make access to this storage system occur via HA Linux. Ideally I would connect 2 fibre ports from each controller into each Linux server, and then export either NFS or iSCSI via a 10 Gbe interface. I have seen plenty of references to DRBD, however all of those references tend to use block storage that is solely attached to each machine, rather than having a shared block storage device, so I am unsure if DRBD could (or should) be used in this case. Ideas?

  i am considering between windows home server simple nas extra HDD's in desktop btw, i will be the main user i am looking to fulfil the following needs: reliability (i am think RAID 1 or 5) not so prone to virus/malware infections (will using a separate NAS or home server help? say windows home server is still a windows pc except separated by network?) power efficiency (eg. spin down when not in use) download (eg. i may want to dl big files/torrents overnight and i may not want to use a full powered PC for it? does a full pc vs NAS provide significant power usage to justify cost of new system esp. since i am only user?) performance (i guess i like to write/access my files fast, on 2nd thought, maybe for backup i can forgo this? maybe for a WD Green HDD? but how much slower will it be? plus since i am the only user, i think the whole HDD will be mine?)

  I'm experimenting with large changes to Linux system runtime parameters exposed through the sysfs virtual file system. What is the most efficient way to maintain these parameters so that they persist across reboots on a RHEL/CentOS-style system? Is it simply dumping commands into /etc/rc.local? Is there an init script that's well-suited for this? I'm also thinking about standardization from a configuration management perspective. Is there a clean sysfs equivalent to sysctl?

  Before I pose my question, I will give some insight as per my scenario: I work for a small business (cost is an important factor) Our bandwidth is limited and would not support an in-house FTP server We need to share files (mostly pdf, inDesign, Illustrator documents) to our clients, and as we expand, we are finding that our current locally-hosted FTP solution is too slow and is becoming a detriment to our sales team. What we need is a remotely hosted solution to share files with our clients, specifically with the following features: Greater than 100gb of secure storage The Ability to distribute unique log in credentials to clients, granting access to a personalized directory or folder, while limiting access to other files on the server. A relatively simple web-based UI for clients with limited computer knowledge We have considered a dedicated remote server, and web-based services (box.net, yousendit.com, onehub.com, filesanywhere.com) but I am unsure as per the direction we should be taking - have I left another solution out? • Suggestions for transitioning to new GW/private network

  I am replacing a private T1 link with a new firewall device with an ipsec tunnel for a branch office. I am trying to figure out the right way to transition folks at the new site over to the new connection, so that they default to using the much faster tunnel. Existing network: 192.168.254.0/24, gw 192.168.254.253 (Cisco router plugged in to private t1) Test network I have been using with ipsec tunnel: 192.168.1.0/24, gw 192.168.1.1 (pfsense fw plugged in to public internet), also plugged in to same switch as the old network. There are probably ~20-30 network devices in the existing subnet, about 5 with static IPs. The remote endpoint is already the firewall--I can't set up redundant links to the existing subnet. In other words, as soon as I change the tunnel configuration to point to 192.168.254.0/24, all devices in the existing subnet will stop working because they point to the wrong gateway. I'd like some ability to do this slowly--such that I can move over a few clients and verify the stability of the new link before moving critical services or less tolerant users over. What's the right way to do this? Change the netmask on all of the devices to /16, and update gateway to point to the new device? Could this cause any problems? Also, how should I handle DNS? The pfsense box is not aware of my Active Directory environment. But if I change DNS to use the local servers, it will result in a huge slowdown as DNS queries will still be routed over the private t1. I need some help coming up with a plan that's not too disruptive but will really let me thoroughly test the stability of the IPSEC tunnel before I make the final switch. The AD version is 2008R2, as are the servers. Workstations are mostly Windows XP SP3. I have not configured the 192.168.1.0/24 as a site in AD sites and services.

  I often have batches of laptops/PC's to re-image and have tried various methods, but each of them has been problematic and often take more time to troubleshoot than it would have been to image them individually! For example, i have tried to use ghost - i installed ghostcast server on my laptop but the clients never seem to boot to LAN successfully, or it takes an hour to get everything sorted (drivers, LAN, DHCP etc etc). I want a reliable tool that makes imaging quick and easy - and i don't mind paying for it if it's going to work (but obviously free = always good!)

• Suggestions for a very easy to edit CMS?

  I need advice/suggestions. At my place of work - we have a large data set. We would like to server the data up as editable html pages. (Its mostly lists of simple text) We would like to add data, change it's order, update text etc...from the editable pages. It has to have a pretty low bar for usability and WYSIWYG is a must. The folks who will edit are not programmers by a long shot. We are not sure Wiki will work. It might have to do - but not sure. Changes have to be tracked and written back into the DB I am thinking some kind of open source CMS might work? Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal - something that can get us up and running pretty quickly.
