I know about the UISearchBarDelegate protocol, but I don't know how to show/hide the scope bar with animation. I know UISearchBar has setShowsScopeBar:, but no setShowsScopeBar:animated: the way it does for setShowsCancelButton:animated.

  I have a Table with over 3000 entries and searching is very slow. I suspect that I will need to use threading instead, but I do not have much experience with it.

  I have an .xib file connected to a ViewController, which is init'ed as the root controller of an instance of UINavigationController in my appDelegate. In that view, I have a UISearchBar and a UITableView below it. When the view loads up, there's a navigationBar at the top, followed by a ~20 pixel gap, and then the UISearchBar, and the table beneath it: My problem is that when I enter the UISearchBar to type something, the navigation bar disappears (which is fine), but the search box is all screwy: I'm pretty new to this (a couple of weeks), so I'm not quite sure what's going on. Can anyone help me shed some light on this?

  Right, to begin my question, here's some screenies of the problem already solved by the Spotify app: Spotify's Step 1: Standard UISearchBar not in editing mode. Spotify's Step 2: UISearchBar now in editing mode. Search term entered. Cancel button slides in from the right, and the clear button (grey x) appears. Spotify's Step 3: Cancel button pressed; keyboard slides out and the search bar is no longer in editing mode. Search term remains and the grey x button is now hidden. At present, the following code fires off when my cancel button is pressed: - (void)searchBarCancelButtonClicked:(UISearchBar *)searchBar { [searchBar resignFirstResponder]; [searchBar setShowsCancelButton:NO animated:YES]; } Which results in: My Step 3: Search bar now not in editing mode. Cancel button and keyboard has slid out. Search term remains but so does the grey x. So, my question is this: given that -resignFirstResponder (and -endEditing:, FYI) does not hide the grey x button when a search bar has had text entered into it, how does one hide it?   I have a UITableView with an Index on the side; I want to add a UISearchBar to it, but the index overlaps with the "x" to clear the search. I've noticed in the Contacts application, the textfield within the UISearchBar is resized to accommodate this, but I can't work out how to do this in my own app. I have tried the following in my viewDidLoad, but it does not seem to work. Is it possible to change the color of this bar? It is obviously not absolutely crucial but that line is going to bug me forever if it stays blue like that!

• Push a ViewController and It Pops Right Back

  I have a view controller with a table view and a UISearchBar. When the view controller is first brought up, the table is populated. A click on a table row pushes another view controller, it animates up and then pops right back down and returns me to the table. It does this whether the search bar has been used or not. I do this push pop kind of action in several view controllers with not problem. My guess is that the UISearchBar is somehow getting in the way. Any one have any idea as to what I'm doing wrong?

  Hi, I'm using a UISearchDisplayController with a UISearchBar. I put this UISearchBar in my app using IB and I get : Fine : when you start taping, the result popovercontroller appears magically (I didn't write anything on my own to make it appear !) Then, when a row is clicked among the result, I want to dismiss the PopoverController BUT at this stage, I never instantiated the UIPopoverController on my side : it looks like if there's an encapsulated behavior in the UISearchDisplayController that automatically wraps its searchContentsController inside a UIPopoverController. That's really great because everything works perfectly without doing anything except that I cannot get the reference to this UIPopoverController to dismiss it :( Does anyone know how to get the reference to this "magically" created UIPopoverController ? (this is the proof the iPad is really a "magical" device ;) I thought there would be a reference to the UIPopoverController from its contentController (through its parent property for instance), but I cannot find any way to get a pointer to it :/

• UISearchDisplayController not working when created in code??

  I'm working on a tab bar application and one of the tabs has a UISearchDisplayController hooked up to a UISearchBar. It's all connected up in the NIB and is working. When I tap the search bar, the Scope and Cancel buttons fly in etc, and the search delegate updates the results table correctly. However, I'm trying to implement the same code in the viewDidLoad message instead of the NIB, however when I delete the search display controller from the NIB and uncomment my code to create the same controller in the function, it doesn't work. It's as if there's some fundamental connection not being made so that all my search delegate functionality isn't being called. Here's my working NIB version of the Search Display Controller. It's hooked up to the search bar, the UINavigationController subclass (MASearchController) and the root view of that is hooked up as the searchContentsController. Now this is what you would expect to do in code to create the same, right? What I'm doing is leaving the UISearchBar in the NIB to eliminate one piece of the puzzle at a time in code. // [MASearchController viewDidLoad] UISearchDisplayController *searchController = [[[UISearchDisplayController alloc] initWithSearchBar:searchBar contentsController:[[self viewControllers] objectAtIndex:0]] autorelease]; [searchController setDelegate:self]; [searchController setSearchResultsDelegate:self]; [searchController setSearchResultsDataSource:self]; I've checked all objects at run time and they all check out. Essentially I've deleted the search display controller from the NIB and then put in the code to create it in the viewDidLoad message. Why would this not work? The search keyboard comes up but none of my search and button animation functionality work???

• iPhone development: Best method to allow user to chose search scope

  Hi, I'm developing my first iPhone app and want to allow the user to select the scope of their search in a more complex way than the 'scope buttons' permit. The app is related to wines and I want to the user to be able to select the 'color' (Red, White, Blush, etc.) first, and then select the type/varietal within that category. Right now, I'm using the UISearchBar's scope buttons for the colors and tapping the button opens a view with the selection of colors. This is okay except that once the 'Red' button has been selected, I can't select it a second time to change my choice of type (e.g., change from 'Merlot' to 'Syrrah', etc.) If there's a better way to do this, I'm willing to scrap my method and start from scratch. • Scroll UITableView so that the header isn't visible

  I've got a UITableView with a UISearchBar as the tableViews.tableHeaderView. Just like the new Mail.app, Notes.app, etc. in 3.0. I want to hide the SearchBar until the user drags it in his sight. My attempt only works when there're a couple of items in the tableView, so that the tableView actually wants to scroll. I call this in loadView: NSIndexPath *indexPath = [NSIndexPath indexPathForRow:0 inSection:0]; [self._tableView scrollToRowAtIndexPath:indexPath atScrollPosition:UITableViewScrollPositionTop animated:NO]; Nevertheless it seems that Apple handles such a serachbar differently. After draging out the searchbar it doesn't seem to be bounded to the tablecells anymore (in Notes.app, not in Mail.app). But perhaps Apple has a distinct method for that new 3.0 behaviour, and I just can't find it?

• iPhone Text entry with completion and DONE button (not search)

  Using iPhone SDK 3.0, I wish to allow text entry with (optional) completion options that appear as typing is occurring, i.e. also allowing freeformat entry. As such I am using a UISearchBar (which has the text change events) and a UISearchDisplayController to present options. The problems is I want the DONE button to say DONE and not SEARCH, however I cannot find a way to set that. Clearly I feel I am missing something, or Interface Builder of the SDK API would have some property to set. I have seen other apps (in the store) that have achieved the result I want (free format entry, completion, DONE button) so maybe there is an alternative approach I am missing.
