  • Ubuntu One and iPad

    - by Martin G Miller
I have installed the Ubuntu One app for my iPad 3 running iOS 6. It runs and asked to access my pictures folder on the iPad, which I granted. Now it just displays a splash screen for the Ubuntu One but does not seem to be doing anything else. I can't figure out how to get it to see my regular Ubuntu One account that I have had for the last few years and use regularly between various Ubuntu computers I have.

  • How can test users access an unpublished iOS app?

    - by David
I am considering outsourcing the development of an iOS app to various independent developers. I will have have various testers of the app. We all work for separate companies. Some of these testers will be customers, who I would like feedback from. As there are multiple developers involved I expect there to be a new release on a daily basis. How can this be done? Would each of the testers need to buy some sort of license to avoid having to go through the app approval process? Is there any smooth way to do this so that it will not be a hassle for our friendly customers, who are willing to test our app?

  • How do I install Ubuntu on an iMac 27"?

    - by jml
I have a beautiful 27" iMac. I would like to run Ubuntu on it natively, dual-booting with OS X. I have rEFIt installed, and I can boot into the Ubuntu 10.10 CD, kind of. Here's what happens: I select the CD from the rEFIt menu It loads for a while, then flashes up an aubergine screen with a very low-res picture of a human, an arrow and a keyboard It sits there for a while It changes to 80x25 console mode The screen then goes black, as if nothing is displaying to it All the while, the CD is churning away as if something is reading from it. What do I do?

  • How to Change the Cmd+Q Shortcut Key in OS X (to Stop Accidentally Closing Apps)

    - by The Geek
If you’ve spent any time using Mac OS X, you’ve figured out that the Cmd+W shortcut key closes a window or tab, while the Cmd+Q key quits the entire app. The problem? The keys are right next to each other, and way too easy to accidentally hit! Here’s how to change it. This problem is compounded even more when you’re using an application like Google Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, where you’re opening or closing tabs all the time, and probably using the Cmd+W key to close just the current tab. If you aren’t careful, you’ll accidentally hit Cmd+Q instead, and your entire browser gets closed. • How do I switch the Command key and Control key on a MacBook Pro (12.04)?

    - by kalaracey
I have scoured the web, and I can't seem to get Xmodmap / anything to work properly. I want to swap BOTH my Command keys with my Control key - in essence, inverting what they do currently. How would I do that? I tried xmodmap -e "keycode 133 = Control_L" and corresponding commands for keycodes 134 (right command) and 37 (control left). I even tried these commands, plus xmodmap -pke > ~/.Xmodmap and xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap in .xinitrc. My end goal is I want HUD / Dash to come up when I click control and command to functional control, i.e., control-v is a commond shortcut to paste, i would click command-v

  • Force Your Mac to Sort Folders on Top of Files (Windows Style)

    - by Eric Z Goodnight
Even die-hard Mac converts have their issues with Mac OS, and one of those problems is that OS X lists folders mixed in with all other files. Here’s how to fix that in under five minutes with a clever hack. You know you’ve had that issue. You’ve dug through your files looking for that one elusive folder, and because it’s jumbled in with all the other stuff, it’s more or less impossible to find. Have no fear, with no downloads or silly plug-in software, you can finally make Mac OS behave like Windows and Linux and list those folders in the proper order.  How To Encrypt Your Cloud-Based Drive with BoxcryptorHTG Explains: Photography with Film-Based CamerasHow to Clean Your Dirty Smartphone (Without Breaking Something)

  • Them and us

    - by Plip
As much as we try and create inclusive societies throughout the globe time and time again we revert to our tribal and clan origins back in the distant past, be those line split across the obvious like  Nationality, Religion or even the Football teams we follow. Microsoft to me has always been a “them”. I was always on the outside looking in, free to say as I wished and have an external objective viewpoint. Now, after my first week (well four days but who’s counting) Microsoft is an “us” for me. So when I look up in the Atrium of Building 1 at Microsoft’s UK headquarters I see banners like the one above and I already genuinely feel a part of this much bigger community. I looked up at that and I felt a sense of pride to be part of something bigger, something which is out there touching peoples lives everywhere (for the good and the bad). My objectivity has made me who I am today. I’m open to other ideas and concepts, I’ve worked hard to be understanding across the board be it from technology through to cultural differences in my life and it’s vital to me that I preserve that so I now have to learn how I balance the “them” of Microsoft to the “us” of Microsoft and maintain the objectivity. It’s my job to advise people on the best way to do things, which won’t always mean “Use Microsoft Technology X”, sometimes it’ll be my responsibility to say “Don’t use Microsoft Technology X”. My first and foremost responsibility is to the customer, to give them the best advice that I can and I want to maintain that. Yeah, I’m sure I’ll be tarred by some as a Microsoft guy, for many years I’ve had just that, but those out there in the non Microsoft communities I’ve engaged in I think know that I’m the first to say when I think something is a bit naff. So, here’s my ask to you ‘the community’. Keep me honest. If I start to sound like a fanboi I want you to find me and give me a slap. It’s all too easy to forget reality sometimes and I want to make sure I stay well and truly routed in that reality. Also, no matter how much I embed myself within Microsoft I fear I will never understand Microsoft’s marketing team. In the Gents just under the WP7 banner shown above I was faced with this. Draw your own conclusions on what it’s message is.

  • How do I airport-utils to configure my Airport Extreme?

    - by chands
I'm trying to use this package (airport-utils) to try to configure my Airport Extreme. I was able to install it without a problem using apt-get but when I try to use it nothing happens. Literally, nothing: shreyas@shreyas-laptop:~$ airport2-portinspector shreyas@shreyas-laptop:~$ No windows open, nothing. I tried calling ps aux and grepping for anything that might hint to the command actually doing something but I came up empty. Does anyone have any experience with this package and can help me, or is there something else I can do to work with my Airport Extreme?

  • Keyboard settings for a Mac+PC world

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I’m one of those weridos who lives in a Mac+PC world. I write code for both iOS and Windows platforms. I also travel quite a bit, and airlines and airport security are starting to weigh your carry ons, and beginning to frown on the powerplant of batteries you need to carry to power SharePoint on an airplane. This means, my main work machine has to be a Macbook Pro, since it is the only machine that can do both XCode and Visual Studio Virtualized and SharePoint virtualized nicely. The problem this causes of course, is you will literally pull your hair out when dealing with keyboard/shortcut differences. So here is my work setup, Running Mac for all my normal work Virtualizing using VMWare Fusion – and sometimes I move these VMs to my windows server so I can run them on VMware workstation. • Best Usage of Multiple Computers For a Developer

    - by whaley
I have two Macbook Pros - both are comparable in hardware. One is a 17" and the other a 15". The 17" has a slightly swifter CPU clock speed, but beyond that the differences are completely negligible. I tried a setup a while back where I had the 17" hooked up to an external monitor in the middle of my desk with the 15" laptop immediately to the right of it, and was using teleport to control the 15" from my 17". All development, terminal usage, etc. etc. was being done on the 17" and the 15" was primarily used for email / IM / IRC... or anything secondary to what I was working on. I have a MobileMe account so preferences were synced, but otherwise I didn't really use anything else to keep the computers in sync (I use dropbox/git but probably not optimally). For reasons I can't put my finger on, this setup never felt quite right. A few things that irked me was the 15" was way under-utlized and the 17" was overutilized having 2 laptops and a 21" monitor all on one desk actually took up lots of desk space and it felt like I had too much to look at. I reverted back to just using the 17" and the external monitor and keeping the 15" around the house (and using it very sparingly). For those of you who are using multiple laptops (or just multiple machines for that matter), I'd like to see setups that work for you for when you have 2 or more machines that gives you optimal productivity and why. I'd like to give this one more shot but with a different approach than my previous - which was using the 15" as a machine for secondary things (communication, reading documentation, etc. etc).

  • The perfect RDP experience from Mac to Windows

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information For the reasons I mentioned in my keyboard remapping blog post, I live in a Mac+PC world. This means, I find myself frequently RDP’ing to Windows Machines from my Mac. And yes, that Metro UI on RDP is even more frustrating than it is without RDP. Mac is a different OS than Windows (duh!), and the way it handles multiple screens and spaces is entirely different from windows. This means, RDP experiences are tough to make 100% seamless. You can see the frustrations in the various reviews on the Microsoft RDP app on the Mac app store. It can be difficult to find the perfect settings for the perfect user experience. • What is the most secure way to "Grandfather In" existing users of a paid iOS app that will go free?

    - by coneybeare
The title pretty much says it all, but I can elaborate. I have a paid iOS app that has plenty of existing customers. I think i want to convert to a free app now, and allow full upgrade via in-app-purchase. The problem is, I don't want to make my existing customers buy the app again to use it, nor do I want to make it easy for hackers to just flip a switch and get the pro version. What is the most secure way to "Grandfather In" existing users of a paid iOS app that will go free?

  • Fixed window size app development for Mac OS X

    - by Phil
I am developing a rather eye-candy application which is to be released on Mac App Store. Due to its graphics intensive use, it would save a great deal of time on UI end if the app could be released with a fixed size main frame-dialog. I did try doing a search regarding App Store policies on the matter but could not find anything. Is the distribution of fixed-size frame [productivity] apps are allowed within the App Store if they conform with other design guidelines?

  • Failover or load balancing configuration on Apple Xserve and Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard (10.6)

    - by Alasdair Allan
I'm currently installing a number of Apple Xserve boxes running Mac OS X Server (10.6). After poking and prodding for a while I can't find any obvious way, or documentation telling me how, to set up the 2 ethernet ports in a failover or load-balancing configuration. There seems to be an obvious way to do link aggregation, but not failover or load-balancing? What's the default configuration if I enable both ports with the same (manually configured) IP address?
