  • Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 2)

Last week's article, <a href="http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/051910-1.aspx">Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1)</a>, was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free <a href="http://code.google.com/apis/maps/">Google Maps API</a>. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named <code>Stores</code> with columns capturing the store number, its address and its <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latitude">latitude</a> and <a

  • JavaScript - Why does google-maps wait until jquery finishes download?

    - by Teddyk
I'm using the following Google Maps autload (asynchronous) to load asynchronous both Google Maps v3 and JQuery, like so: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi?autoload={ "modules":[ {name:"maps",version:3,other_params:"sensor=false"},{"name":"jquery","version":"1.4.2"},{"name":"jqueryui","version":"1.8.1"} ]}"></script> However, looking at the network traffic, it appears that it is not downloading asynchronously. Question: Does anyone understand why the %7Bcommon (google-maps) file is being delayed from download until the jquery-ui.min file completes download first?

  • Hybrid static/dynamic Google Map

    - by jonathanconway
Ever noticed that when you go to maps.google.com and do a search (say, car wash), it renders a lot of results (represented by small circles) and a few prominent ones (seen as regular-size pins)? Notice how quickly it does this? From what I can tell from analyzing this in Firebug, much of this is generated on the server and sent to the client as a static image. However, it's still dynamic. You can still zoom in and out, or click on a result and see a dynamic InfoWindow rendered. Google have made the map quick and smooth using static images, while still making it flexible. Is there a way to do this kind of 'pre-loading' with my own Google Map (implemented with the Google Maps API)?

  • Can not make a request to google map

    - by Eme Emertana
Hi I am making a restful request to google map, but I run into following error; java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 400 for URL: http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/distancematrix/xml?origins=Washington, DC USA&destinations=Los+Angeles+CA+USA&mode=driving&sensor=false at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getInputStream(HttpURLConnection.java:1436) at java.net.URLConnection.getContent(URLConnection.java:688) I believe its making a correct connection as I can get the correct response by copying the above URL into my browser, I am wondering why I am getting 400 error code in my console and I dont get the correct response when java is sending the request.

  • How do I search using the Google Maps API?

    - by Thomas
Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how to search for nearby businesses in an iPhone app using the Google Maps API. I'm completely new to Javascript, and have waded through some of Google's sample code easily enough. I found how to grab the user's current location. Now I want to search for "restaurants" near that location. I'm just building on the sample code from here. I'll post it below with my changes anyway, just in case. <html> <head> <meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no" /> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/> <title>Google Maps JavaScript API v3 Example: Map Geolocation</title> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?sensor=true"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.google.com/apis/gears/gears_init.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> var currentLocation; var detroit = new google.maps.LatLng(42.328784, -83.040877); var browserSupportFlag = new Boolean(); var map; var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow(); function initialize() { var myOptions = { zoom: 6, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP }; map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), myOptions); map.enableGoogleBar(); // Try W3C Geolocation method (Preferred) if(navigator.geolocation) { browserSupportFlag = true; navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) { // TRP - Save current location in a variable (currentLocation) currentLocation = new google.maps.LatLng(position.coords.latitude,position.coords.longitude); // TRP - Center the map around current location map.setCenter(currentLocation); }, function() { handleNoGeolocation(browserSupportFlag); }); } else { // Browser doesn't support Geolocation browserSupportFlag = false; handleNoGeolocation(browserSupportFlag); } } function handleNoGeolocation(errorFlag) { if (errorFlag == true) { // TRP - Default location is Detroit, MI currentLocation = detroit; contentString = "Error: The Geolocation service failed."; } else { // TRP - This should never run. • Silverlight - Adding Text to Pushpin in Bing Maps via C#

    - by Morano88
    I was able to make my silverlight Bing map accepts Mousclicks and converts them to Pushpins in C#. Now I want to show a text next to the PushPin as a description that appears when the mouse goes over the pin , I have no clue how to do that. What are the methods that enable me to do this thing? This is the C# code : public partial class MainPage : UserControl { private MapLayer m_PushpinLayer; public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); base.Loaded += OnLoaded; } private void OnLoaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { base.Loaded -= OnLoaded; m_PushpinLayer = new MapLayer(); x_Map.Children.Add(m_PushpinLayer); x_Map.MouseClick += OnMouseClick; } private void AddPushpin(double latitude, double longitude) { Pushpin pushpin = new Pushpin(); pushpin.MouseEnter += OnMouseEnter; pushpin.MouseLeave += OnMouseLeave; m_PushpinLayer.AddChild(pushpin, new Location(latitude, longitude), PositionOrigin.BottomCenter); } private void OnMouseClick(object sender, MapMouseEventArgs e) { Point clickLocation = e.ViewportPoint; Location location = x_Map.ViewportPointToLocation(clickLocation); AddPushpin(location.Latitude, location.Longitude); } private void OnMouseLeave(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Pushpin pushpin = sender as Pushpin; // remove the pushpin transform when mouse leaves pushpin.RenderTransform = null; } private void OnMouseEnter(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Pushpin pushpin = sender as Pushpin; // scaling will shrink (less than 1) or enlarge (greater than 1) source element ScaleTransform st = new ScaleTransform(); st.ScaleX = 1.4; st.ScaleY = 1.4; // set center of scaling to center of pushpin st.CenterX = (pushpin as FrameworkElement).Height / 2; st.CenterY = (pushpin as FrameworkElement).Height / 2; pushpin.RenderTransform = st; } }

  • Problem printing google maps printing and using 'page-break-before' in IE8

    - by murdoch
Hi, I'm having an annoying problem trying to get an html page with a google map on it to print correctly, I have a google map with an <h2> above it all wrapped in a div and the div is set to 'page-break-before:always;' in the css so that the map and its heading always sits on a new page. The problem is that in IE8 only i can always see a large portion of the map rendered on the previous page when printed, also the part of the map that is visible on the previous page is that which is outside the visible bounds of the map. HTML: <div id="description"> <h2>Description</h2> <p>Some paragraph of text</p> <p>Some paragraph of text</p> <p>Some paragraph of text</p> </div> <div id="map"> <h2>Location</h2> <div id="mapHolder"></div> <script type="text/javascript"> // ... javascript to create the google map </script> </div> CSS: #map { page-break-before:always; } Here is a screen grab of what it renders like in IE8 http://twitpic.com/1vtwrd It works fine in every other browser i have tried including IE7 so i'm a bit lost, has anyone any ideas of any tricks to stop this from happening?

  • android maps: How to Long Click a Map?

    - by vamsibm
Hi. How do I long click on a mapview so that a place marker appears at that point on the map? I tried a couple ways without success: 1) Using setOnLongClickListener on the MapvView which never detected the longclicks. 2) My other idea was to extend MapView to override dispatchTouchEvent .. Create a GestureDetector to respond to longpress callback. But I was stuck midway here as I could not get a handle to my subclassed Mapview. i.e. MyMapview mymapview; //MyMapView extends MapView mymapView = (MyMapView) findViewById(R.id.map); //results in a classcast exception 3) The only other way I know how to try this is: Detect a MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN and post a delayed runnable to a handler and detect longpress if the two other events: acton_move or an action_up, have not happened. Can someone provide thoughts on any of these methods to detect long presses? Thanks in advance. Bd

  • jQuery Thickbox and Google Maps Extinfowindow

    - by cdonner
I am trying to place a link into an Extinfowindow that obtains its content through an Ajax call. So, I click on a push pin marker, up pops the Extinfowindow with my ThickBox link in it, and when I inspect the DOM for the entire page at that point, I can see the element correctly showing up with the "thickbox" class. The link looks like this <A class="thickbox" title="" href="http://localhost:1293/Popup.aspx? height=200&width=300&modal=true">Modal Popup</A> However, when I click on it, it does a full refresh and the target page loads in the browser, not in a popup. It seems that when the <A> for the Thickbox control is injected into the DOM after the initial load, jQuery is no longer able to do its magic and intercept the anchor link request. Does anybody have thoughts about how to do this better?

  • Reverse geocoding with Google Maps API

    - by user296516
I have found this code for reverse geocoding: var point = new GLatLng (lat[1],long[1]); var geocoder = new GClientGeocoder(); geocoder.getLocations (point, function(result) { alert (lat[1]+' '+long[1]+' '+result.address); }); But it pops the alert, saying that result.address is 'undefined'. Any ideas, what could be the problem?

  • Get coordinates of google maps markers

    - by App_beginner
I am creating a databse containing the names and coordinates of all bus stops in my local area. I have all the names stored in my database, and now I need to add the coordinates. I am trying to get these of a website that contains them all as placemarks on a google map. It seems to me like they are being generated from a local server, and then added to the map. However I am unable to find exactly where the server is queried for the coordinates. I am hoping to collect these coordinates through the use of a screen scraper. However unless I am able to find where in the source code the coordinates are created this seems to be impossible. I can of course search and collect all these placemarks manually, but that will be very time consuming. So I am hoping that someone in here can help me. This is the website I am trying to scrape. The placemarks are marked by the blue bus sign: http://reiseplanlegger.skyss.no/scripts/travelmagic/TravelMagicWE.dll/?from=Brimnes+ferjekai+%28Eidfjord%29&to= You can also get the coordinates of a single placemark by writing the name of the stop in the search field and pushing the "Vis i kart" button. I hope someone can help me with this.

  • Android Maps Back Button

    - by aaronr
I'm developing an application that shows a path on a map, determined by a KML file. Specifically, in the MapActivity that is starting the map: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); MapView mapView = (MapView) findViewById(R.id.mapview); mapView.setBuiltInZoomControls(true); Uri uri = Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://urltokml"); Intent mapIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri); mapIntent.setData(uri); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(mapIntent, kmlFile)); finish(); } The map loads fine and after a few seconds the path described by the KML shows up. The problem is, when I press the "Back" button, it does not return to the previous screen but instead just hides the KML overlay. If the "Back" button is pressed again, it will return to the previous screen. Any ideas of how to solve this?

  • Kohonen SOM Maps: Normalizing the input with unknown range

    - by S.N
According to "Introduction to Neural Networks with Java By Jeff Heaton", the input to the Kohonen neural network must be the values between -1 and 1. It is possible to normalize inputs where the range is known beforehand: For instance RGB (125, 125, 125) where the range is know as values 0 and 255: 1. Divide by 255: (125/255) = 0.49 (0.49,0.49,0.49) 2. Multiply by two and subtract one: ((0.49*2)-1)=-0.02 (-0.02,-0.02,-0.02) The question is how can we normalize the input where the range is unknown like our height or weight. Also, some other papers mention that the input must be normalized to the values between 0 and 1. Which is the proper way, "-1 and 1" or "0 and 1"?

  • google maps, cellid to location

    - by Dels
According to this sample: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/mobile/DeepCast.aspx It's possible to request a gps coordinate (longitude & latitude) including range when sending cellid information (MCC, MNC, towerid, etc) Can someone tell me the actual parameter to request/post to this address? http://www.google.com/glm/mmap It could be something like this http://www.google.com/glm/mmap?mcc=xxx&mnc=xxx&towerid=xxx And i would like to know what response we would get. I have observe OpenCellid website and they provide some nice API to begin with, but i want to know about that in google map too (since they have more completed database). OpenCellID API

  • Calculating bounding grid coordinates to a user click on google maps/google earth

    - by user170304
Hello, I have a requirement to calculate the centroid or geodesic midpoint of when a user clicks in between the lat/long grid crossing. The crossing forms a square in most parts of GE and sometimes elongated rectangles. This is due to the shape of the earth of course. I'm looking for a valid mathematical formula that would allow a user to click anywhere in between this grid and then an accurate function (in Javascript or server side code) that would take an assumed grid resolution (say 1km intervals for this discussion) and the input coordinates that should return a centroid coordinate within that graticule grid. To clarify please take a look at the attached image to my google group post: http://google-earth-api.googlegroups.com/web/Picture+5.png?gda=h5oFPz8AAAD315KpovipQeBwdfGpmW3ZhBc9PTADwYa-n193hZ6AItFmHuno63c7phcEXYVuRA6ccyFKn-rNKC-d1pM%5FIdV0&gsc=sz6bbAsAAABBKF7YXWYyc4GmXg-QruHj What I need to be able to do is if a user clicks anywhere in this grid square, I need to find the centroid or center point of that grid intersection/square or at least the bounding grid coordinates (that make the square). If we assume that the grid is UTM standard and has a max resolution of 1km (or make this a parameter), I need to detect the four other points nearby and then calculating the centroid is not as difficult. I welcome any feedback you all may have and appreciate it. I don't have a simple way of letting a user click anywhere on the grid and finding the grid bounding coordinates (making a square of 4 coordinates) or the centroid / midpoint of the graticule grid square necessary. One thought is to use assumptions as much as possible using a reference such as UTM coordinate reference. If I assume that the grid is X degrees wide, can we have a pure javascript function take any input coordinate and return for me the bounding graticule coordinates in Decimal Degrees? Another thought I had was to create the grid in a geo-spatial layer to take any input coordinate and return the nearest centroid of the graticule? Does this make sense? Thanks! Omar

  • Google Maps API - Get points along route between lat/long

    - by user311374
I have a web site that I am trying to get completed and I need to have the user click points on a map and then work out the route on the roads between the two points. So the user clicks the first point on 1st street, and then clicks another point on 4th street, and the map will find the best way to get there and plot the route on the map. I am assuming this can be done using directions and parse it up, but I have been searching for an hour now and can't find what I am looking for (maybe bad search terms). I need to be able to plot the map manually (?) so I can calculate the distance, etc... of the route as the user continues to click. The site that is in beta is http://www.RunMyRoute.com/UserRoutes/Create and you can see I am trying to create running routes. I want the user to have the option for the route to follow the roads versus just a straight line between two points on the map. Any help on this would be great! Simon.
