  When you step back and look at ... the nature of animals, insects, plants and the problems they have organically solved perhaps even the nature and balance of the universe Have you ever been able to solve a problem by deriving an approach from nature? I've heard of Ant Colony Algorithms being able to optimize supply chain amongst other things. Also Fractal's being the "geometry of nature" have been applied to a wide range of problems. Now that spring is here again and the world is coming back to life I'm wondering if anybody has some experiences they can share. Thanks PS I would recommend watching the "Hunting the Hidden Dimension" Nova episode on fractals.

  Hi Everyone I am python newbie I have to implement lasso L1 regression for a class assignment. This involves solving a quadratic equation involving block matrices. minimize x^t * H * x + f^t * x where x 0 Where H is a 2 X 2 block matrix with each element being a k dimensional matrix and x and f being a 2 X 1 vectors each element being a k dimension vector. I was thinking of using nd arrays. such that np.shape(H) = (2, 2, k, k) np.shape(x) = (2, k) But I figured out that np.dot(X, H) doesn't work here. Is there an easy way to solve this problem?   Hi, I am developing a program for converting videos for mobiles for eg converting mkv,avi,flv,ogg file to mp4 files.I have to display a preview window which should have the mobile specific dimension for eg. Sony Ericsson has 176 pixels x 220 pixels. My screen resolution is 1600x900 and when I change to some other resolution say 1024x768 for testing the preview window size changes. Can anyone suggest me how can I fix this. SUMMARY:When screen resolution is changed my preview window size should remain same(like if I measure using a scale along the screen). thanks.

  One of my upper classmen has gave me a data set for experimenting with vlfeat's SIFT, however, her extracted SIFT data for the frame part contains 5 dimensions. Recall from vl_sift function: [F,D] = VL_SIFT(I) Each column of D is the descriptor of the corresponding frame in F. F normally contains 4 dimensions which consists of x-coordinate, y-coordinate, scale, and orientation. So I asked her what is this 5th dimension, and she pointed me to search for "standard oxford format" for sift feature. The thing is I tried to search around regarding this standard oxford format and sift feature, but I got no luck in finding it at all. If somebody knows regarding this, could you please point me to the right direction?

• Representing a Gameworld that is Irregularly shaped

  I am working on a project where the game world is irregularly shaped (Think of the shape of a lake). this shape has a grid with coordinates placed over it. The game world is only on the inside of the shape. (Once again, think Lake) How can I efficiently represent the game world? I know that many worlds are basically square, and work well in a 2 or 3 dimension array. I feel like if I use an array that is square, then I am basically wasting space, and increasing the amount of time that I need to iterate through the array. However, I am not sure how a jagged array would work here either. Example shape of gameworld X XX XX X XX XXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXX XX XX X X Edit: The game world will most likely need each valid location stepped through. So I would a method that makes it easy to do so.

  hi folks, i got a crazy error within that for-loop matr=realloc(matr, newmax*sizeof(matr*)); for (i=0; i<newmax; i++){ matr[i]=realloc(matr[i], newmax*sizeof(int)); } matr is a multi-dimension array: int **matr. i need to resize column and row. first line resizes column and the for-loop resizes every row. it worked fine in c. now im working on a library for lua and it crashs here. compilin' works fine as well. but calling from lua crashs with lua: malloc.c:3552: mremap_chunk: Assertion `((size + offset) & (mp_.pagesize-1)) == 0' failed. i have no damn idea since it's working fine using it in c.

• C# Struct No Parameterless Constructor? See what I need to accomplish

  I am using a struct to pass to an unmanaged DLL as so - [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct valTable { public byte type; public byte map; public byte spare1; public byte spare2; public int par; public int min; public byte[] name; public valTable() { name = new byte[24]; } } The code above will not compile because VS 2005 will complain that "Structs cannot contain explicit parameterless constructors". In order to pass this struct to my DLL, I have to pass an array of struct's like so valTable[] val = new valTable[281]; What I would like to do is when I say new, the constructor is called and it creates an array of bytes like I am trying to demonstrate because the DLL is looking for that byte array of size 24 in each dimension. How can I accomplish this?

• Resizing uploaded images based on a maximum width in django (PIL)

  I'm working on a simple message board app in Django that lets people upload images to be displayed in their posts. Since the div containing the posts is only 700px, I want to resize the uploaded images to a max width of something like 680px to save space rather than using css to display an image that's too large within the space constraints. I've been searching this site, google and the PIL docs for a while and haven't found any way of resizing an image on one dimension while maintaining the original aspect ratio. Given my inexperience, it's possible that I'm just not recognizing a solution that's plain to someone who knows what to look for.

• Fortran - String with unknown characters into substrings

  I am trying to put an input string into sub-string arrays. The number of data in the input file are less than 10 but unknown. The number of spaces between each data is also unclear. Example: Asd B Cwqe21 Ddsw Eww I am quite novice to Fortran, so I do not know which format I should use. My problem is that I do not know the number of data (here I assumed that there are 5), so how can I make the code work? I tried the following which did not work: CHARACTER (LEN=100), DIMENSION(10) :: string READ (1,*) (string,I=1,10) It seems that the error I got was because there was no 6th string to read and put into string(6). I tried using the "Index" to find the space, but since I do not know how many spaces are in the string, it did not help me.

  Hello Everyone, I am trying to implement a low pass filter in Java. My requirement is very simple,I have to eliminate signals beyond a particular frequency (Single dimension). Looks like Butterworth filter would suit my need. Now the important thing is that CPU time should be as low as possible. There would be close to a million sample the filter would have to process and our users don't like waiting too long.   I updated jQuery latest version v1.4.2 and getting 'Could not convert JavaScript argument arg 0' this error. Is the any common fix for this. I found some solution and they are saying that when finding dimension for display none element it will give this error. Also the following fix is working for me Placing this if (!elem || elem == document) elem = document.body above this line var computedStyle = defaultView.getComputedStyle(elem, null); I am not sure this is the proper solution. I first found this bug when using jquery blockUI plugin and after updating that plugin to latest version fixed this issue. Anyone suggest me better solution for this?

  I'm new to Android,trying to build a simple game which use 1-bit black and white display.the screen dimension is 160 * 80,that is 12800 pixels.I created a byte array for the "VRAM",so each time it draws,it first checks the array. The thing is that I am not drawing a point or rectangle for each pixel,I'm using 2 bitmaps(ARGB_4444,I have to use alpha channel,because of shadow effect),1 for positive and 1 for negative.So I called 12800 times drawBitmap() in the surfaceView's Draw method.I know that's silly...But even for openGL,12800 quards won't be that fast right? And I don't care if it is ipad or samsung galaxy tab as long as I know it is a tablet, so that I just apply tablet css to it. Same as iphone or Nexus which I don't care either.   Hi, I have an image which is 80px X 50 px, and I need to place that in one of the child of a FrameLayout, how can I specific the layout_width and layout_height of a Framelayout which fits an image without scaling it? I know there is a layout_height="wrap_content" layout_wight="wrap_content" for FrameLayout, but I can't use it, since that FrameLayout has other children. So I would like to hard code the FrameLayout width/height to match the dimension of the image? Should I use layout_width="80px" or layout_width="80dip"? Thank you.

• Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS0030: Cannot convert type 'Type[]' to 'Type'?

  I get this error after I created a class from my xsd file using the xsd.exe tool. So I searched the net and found a solution. Here is the link: http://satov.blogspot.com/2006/12/xsdexe-generated-classes-causing.html Problem is that this makes the code run, but somehow the deserialized data seems corrupt. I did what the site suggests and in the end the 2nd array dimension is always empty (see the comments of the site, somebody also had this problem). Question is, how do I solve this issue now? Is there another tool to create the xsd file? I tried Xsd2Code, without success. Thanks :-)
