  • How to find foreign-key dependencies pointing to one record in Oracle?

    - by daveslab
Hi folks, I have a very large Oracle database, with many many tables and millions of rows. I need to delete one of them, but want to make sure that dropping it will not break any other dependent rows that point to it as a foreign key record. Is there a way to get a list of all the other records, or at least table schemas, that point to this row? I know that I could just try to delete it myself, and catch the exception, but I won't be running the script myself and need it to run clean the first time through. I have the tools SQL Developer from Oracle, and PL/SQL Developer from AllRoundAutomations at my disposal. Thanks in advance!

  • does class/object models have a out-of-the-box equivalent to a database foreign key constraint

    - by Greg
Hi, Does does class/object models have a out-of-the-box equivalent to a database foreign key constraint? Assume the language is C# please. That is say Class A has a field that references Class B and vica-versa. If I have Object A & B (instantiated from these classes) what happens if I delete Object B? Does it auto-delete or throw a constraint issue if it still exists in Object A as a reference? That is, for this scenario is there a way to ensure when a Object A is delete that either (a) object B is delete like a cascade delete, or (b) a constraint exception is thrown as the expectation is that the reference in Class B should be non-null?

  • SQL SERVER – Curious Case of Disappearing Rows – ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE – Part 1 of 2

    - by pinaldave
Social media has created an Always Connected World for us. Recently I enrolled myself to learn new technologies as a student. I had decided to focus on learning and decided not to stay connected on the internet while I am in the learning session. On the second day of the event after the learning was over, I noticed lots of notification from my friend on my various social media handle. He had connected with me on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube as well SMS, WhatsApp on the phone, Skype messages and not to forget with a few emails. I right away called him up. The problem was very unique – let us hear the problem in his own words. “Pinal – we are in big trouble we are not able to figure out what is going on. Our product details table is continuously loosing rows. Lots of rows have disappeared since morning and we are unable to find why the rows are getting deleted. We have made sure that there is no DELETE command executed on the table as well. The matter of the fact, we have removed every single place the code which is referencing the table. We have done so many crazy things out of desperation but no luck. The rows are continuously deleted in a random pattern. Do you think we have problems with intrusion or virus?” After describing the problems he had pasted few rants about why I was not available during the day. I think it will be not smart to post those exact words here (due to many reasons). Well, my immediate reaction was to get online with him. His problem was unique to him and his team was all out to fix the issue since morning. As he said he has done quite a lot out in desperation. I started asking questions from audit, policy management and profiling the data. Very soon I realize that I think this problem was not as advanced as it looked. There was no intrusion, SQL Injection or virus issue. Well, long story short first - It was a very simple issue of foreign key created with ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE.  CASCADE allows deletions or updates of key values to cascade through the tables defined to have foreign key relationships that can be traced back to the table on which the modification is performed. ON DELETE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to delete a row with a key referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all rows containing those foreign keys are also deleted. ON UPDATE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to update a key value in a row, where the key value is referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all of the foreign key values are also updated to the new value specified for the key. (Reference: BOL) In simple words – due to ON DELETE CASCASE whenever is specified when the data from Table A is deleted and if it is referenced in another table using foreign key it will be deleted as well. In my friend’s case, they had two tables, Products and ProductDetails. They had created foreign key referential integrity of the product id between the table. Now the as fall was up they were updating their catalogue. When they were updating the catalogue they were deleting products which are no more available. As the changes were cascading the corresponding rows were also deleted from another table. This is CORRECT. The matter of the fact, there is no error or anything and SQL Server is behaving how it should be behaving. The problem was in the understanding and inappropriate implementations of business logic.  What they needed was Product Master Table, Current Product Catalogue, and Product Order Details History tables. However, they were using only two tables and without proper understanding the relation between them was build using foreign keys. If there were only two table, they should have used soft delete which will not actually delete the record but just hide it from the original product table. This workaround could have got them saved from cascading delete issues. I will be writing a detailed post on the design implications etc in my future post as in above three lines I cannot cover every issue related to designing and it is also not the scope of the blog post. More about designing in future blog posts. Once they learn their mistake, they were happy as there was no intrusion but trust me sometime we are our own enemy and this is a great example of it. In tomorrow’s blog post we will go over their code and workarounds. Feel free to share your opinions, experiences and comments. • Translating Documents from a Foreign Language into English on my Computer?

    - by Simon
I am aware that websites can be translated from many languages into English thanks to Google Translate. If I receive documentation via email that is in a language other than English, how straight forward is it to translate into English on my PC or Apple Mac? (indeed is Google Translate involved or is it strictly for websites) Similarly if I receive documentation via the normal postal mail service (termed "snail mail" if I'm correct) which needs to be translated into English, what steps need to be taken for this documentation to be translated effectively & quickly on my PC or Apple Mac (I am aware of the term Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, and is this costly, or do free alternatives exist to carry out the translation process solely online? ).

  • How do I relate tables with different foreign key names in Kohana ORM?

    - by Matt H
    I'm building a Kohaha application to manage sip lines in asterisk. I'm wanting to use ORM but I'm wondering how do relate certain tables that are already well established. e.g. the table sip_lines looks like this. +--------------------+------------------+------+-----+-------------------+-----------------------------+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | +--------------------+------------------+------+-----+-------------------+-----------------------------+ | id | int(10) unsigned | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | sip_name | varchar(80) | NO | UNI | NULL | | | displayname | varchar(48) | NO | | NULL | | | line_num | varchar(10) | NO | MUL | NULL | | | model | varchar(12) | NO | MUL | NULL | | | mac | varchar(16) | NO | MUL | NULL | | | areacode | varchar(6) | NO | MUL | NULL | | | per_line_astpp_acc | tinyint(1) | NO | | 0 | | | play_warning | tinyint(1) | NO | | 0 | | | callout_disabled | tinyint(1) | NO | | 0 | | | notes | varchar(80) | NO | | NULL | | | last_update | timestamp | NO | | CURRENT_TIMESTAMP | on update CURRENT_TIMESTAMP | +--------------------+------------------+------+-----+-------------------+-----------------------------+ sip_buddies is this: +----------------+------------------------------+------+-----+-----------+----------------+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | +----------------+------------------------------+------+-----+-----------+----------------+ | id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | name | varchar(80) | NO | UNI | | | | host | varchar(31) | NO | | | | | | | lastms | int(11) | NO | | 0 *** snip *** +----------------+------------------------------+------+-----+-----------+----------------+ The two tables are actually related as sip_lines.sip_name = sip_buddies.name How do I relate them in Kohana ORM as this wouldn't be quite right would it? <?php defined('SYSPATH') or die('No direct script access.'); /* A model for all the account information */ class Sip_Line_Model extends ORM { protected $has_one = array("sip_buddies"); } ?> EDIT: Actually, it'd be fair to say that these tables are not properly related with foreign keys! doh. EDIT: Looks like Kohana ORM is not that flexible. ORM is probably not the way to go and works best for completely new projects where the data model can be altered. The reason being that the key names must follow a specific naming convention or else they won't relate in Kohana.

  • Mapping composite foreign keys in a many-many relationship, with overlapping components.

    - by Kirk Broadhurst
I have a Page table and a View table. There is a many-many relationship between these two via a PageView table. Unfortunately all of these tables need to have composite keys (for business reasons). Page has a primary key of (PageCode, Version), View has a primary key of (ViewCode, Version). PageView obviously enough has PageCode, ViewCode, and Version. The FK to Page is (PageCode, Version) and the FK to View is (ViewCode, Version) Makes sense and works, but when I try to map this in Entity framework I get Error 3021: Problem in mapping fragments...: Each of the following columns in table PageView is mapped to multiple conceptual side properties: PageView.Version is mapped to (PageView_Association.View.Version, PageView_Association.Page.Version) So clearly enough, EF is having a complain about the Version column being a common component of the two foreign keys. Obviously I could create a PageVersion and ViewVersion column in the join table, but that kind of defeats the point of the constraint, i.e. the Page and View must have the same Version value. Has anyone encountered this, and is there anything I can do get around it? Thanks!

  • What is the best way in assigning foreign key when using entity framework & LINQ to Entities?

    - by Abdel Olakara
Hi all, I need to know the best practice of creating an entity object and assigning the foreign key. Here is my scenario. I have a Product table with pid,name,unit_price etc.. I also have a Rating table with pid (foregin key),rate, votes etc... Currently i am doing the following to create the rating object: var prod = entities.Product.First(p => p.product_id == pid); prod.Rating.Load(); if (prod.Rating != null) { log.Info("Rating already exists!"); // set values and Calcuate the score } else { log.Info("New Rating!!!"); Rating rating = new Rating(); // set values and do inital calculation prod.Rating = rating; } entities.SaveChanges(); Even though this works fine, i would like to know the best practice in doing these kind of assignment. Thanks for your suggestions and info. Best Regards, Abdel Olakara

  • Why does Perl lose foreign characters on Windows; can this be fixed (if so, how)?

Note below how ã changes to a. NOTE2: Before you blame this on CMD.EXE and Windows pipe weirdness, see Experiment 2 below which gets a similar problem using File::Find. The particular problem I'm trying to fix involves working with image files stored on a local drive, and manipulating the file names which may contain foreign characters. The two experiments shown below are intermediate debugging steps. The ã character is common in latin languages. e.g. http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cão Experiment 1 Experiment 2 To get around my particular problem, I tried using File::Find instead of piped input. • SQL Server: Can INFORMATION_SCHEMA Tell Me When a SQL Object Was Created?

    - by Jim G.
Given: I added a non-nullable foreign key to a table. I settled on a way to populate the foreign key with default values. I checked in both changes to a re-runnable DB creation script. Other developers ran this script, and now they have the foreign key populated with default values on their developer machines. A few days later however... I changed my mind. Now I'd like to populate the foreign key's default values differently. My Question: Can SQL Server or INFORMATION_SCHEMA tell me when SQL objects were created? Ideally, I'd like to drop and re-add the foreign key if it was created before a certain date/time. Any help or alternative strategies would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, I'd like to avoid going to each developer's cube, asking them to drop the foreign key manually.

  • Data model for timesheet to task and/or timesheet to project?

    - by John
Let's say I want to make a simple project tracking system. A manager can create a project. Then he can create tasks for that project. Team members can record the hours they work for each task or for the project as a whole. Is the following design for the t_timesheet table a good idea? timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement project_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_project task_id - nullable, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal Or should I do something like this: timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement task_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal In the second option, I intend to always have a record in t_task labelled "miscellaneous items" with a foreign key to the relevant t_project record. Then I'll be able to track all hours for a project that aren't for any particular task. Are any of the ideas above good? What would be better?

  • help with generating models from database for many to many in doctrine

    - by ajsie
im using doctrine and i have set up some test tables to be generated into models: I want a many-to-many relationship models (3 tables converted into 3 models) (things are simplified to make the point clear) mysql tables: user: id INT // primary key name VARCHAR group: id INT // primary key name VARCHAR user_group: user_id INT // primary and foreign key to user.id group_id INT // primary and foreign key to group.id i thought that it would generate these models (from the documentation): // User.php class User extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->hasColumn('id'); $this->hasColumn('name); } public function setUp() { $this->hasMany('Group as Groups', array( 'refClass' => 'UserGroup', 'local' => 'user_id', 'foreign' => 'group_id' ) ); } } // Group.php class Group extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->hasColumn('id'); $this->hasColumn('name); } public function setUp() { $this->hasMany('User as Users', array( 'refClass' => 'UserGroup', 'local' => 'group_id', 'foreign' => 'user_id' ) ); } } // UserGroup.php class UserGroup extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->hasColumn('user_id') ); $this->hasColumn('group_id') ); } } but it generated this: // User.php abstract class BaseUser extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->hasColumn('id'); $this->hasColumn('name'); } public function setUp() { $this->hasMany('UserGroup', array( 'local' => 'id', 'foreign' => 'user_id')); } } // Group.php abstract class BaseGroup extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->hasColumn('id'); $this->hasColumn('name'); } public function setUp() { $this->hasMany('UserGroup', array( 'local' => 'id', 'foreign' => 'group_id')); } } // UserGroup.php abstract class BaseUserGroup extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this->hasColumn('user_id'); $this->hasColumn('group_id'); } public function setUp() { $this->hasOne('User', array( 'local' => 'user_id', 'foreign' => 'id')); $this->hasOne('Group', array( 'local' => 'group_id', 'foreign' => 'id')); } } as you can see, there is no 'refClass' in the 'User' and 'Group' models pointing to the 'UserGroup'. the 'UserGroup' table in this case is just another table from Doctrine's perspective not a reference table. I've checked my table definitions in mysql. They are correct. user_group has 2 columns (primary keys and foreign keys), each one pointing to the primary key in either User or Group. But i want the standard many-to-many relationship models in Doctrine models. I'd appreciate some help. I have struggled to figure it out for a half day now. What is wrong? Thanks!

  • Where'd My Data Go? (and/or...How Do I Get Rid of It?)

    - by David Paquette
Want to get a better idea of how cascade deletes work in Entity Framework Code First scenarios? Want to see it in action? Stick with us as we quickly demystify what happens when you tell your data context to nuke a parent entity. This post is authored by Calgary .NET User Group Leader David Paquette with help from Microsoft MVP in Asp.Net James Chambers. We got to spend a great week back in March at Prairie Dev Con West, chalk full of sessions, presentations, workshops, conversations and, of course, questions.  One of the questions that came up during my session: "How does Entity Framework Code First deal with cascading deletes?". James and I had different thoughts on what the default was, if it was different from SQL server, if it was the same as EF proper and if there was a way to override whatever the default was.  So we built a set of examples and figured out that the answer is simple: it depends.  (Download Samples) Consider the example of a hockey league. You have several different entities in the league including games, teams that play the games and players that make up the teams. Each team also has a mascot.  If you delete a team, we need a couple of things to happen: The team, games and mascot will be deleted, and The players for that team will remain in the league (and therefore the database) but they should no longer be assigned to a team. So, let's make this start to come together with a look at the default behaviour in SQL when using an EDMX-driven project. The Reference – Understanding EF's Behaviour with an EDMX/DB First Approach First up let’s take a look at the DB first approach.  In the database, we defined 4 tables: Teams, Players, Mascots, and Games.  We also defined 4 foreign keys as follows: Players.Team_Id (NULL) –> Teams.Id Mascots.Id (NOT NULL) –> Teams.Id (ON DELETE CASCADE) Games.HomeTeam_Id (NOT NULL) –> Teams.Id Games.AwayTeam_Id (NOT NULL) –> Teams.Id Note that by specifying ON DELETE CASCADE for the Mascots –> Teams foreign key, the database will automatically delete the team’s mascot when the team is deleted.  While we want the same behaviour for the Games –> Teams foreign keys, it is not possible to accomplish this using ON DELETE CASCADE in SQL Server.  Specifying a ON DELETE CASCADE on these foreign keys would cause a circular reference error: The series of cascading referential actions triggered by a single DELETE or UPDATE must form a tree that contains no circular references. No table can appear more than one time in the list of all cascading referential actions that result from the DELETE or UPDATE – MSDN When we create an entity data model from the above database, we get the following:   In order to get the Games to be deleted when the Team is deleted, we need to specify End1 OnDelete action of Cascade for the HomeGames and AwayGames associations.   Now, we have an Entity Data Model that accomplishes what we set out to do.  One caveat here is that Entity Framework will only properly handle the cascading delete when the the players and games for the team have been loaded into memory.  For a more detailed look at Cascade Delete in EF Database First, take a look at this blog post by Alex James.   Building The Same Sample with EF Code First Next, we're going to build up the model with the code first approach.  EF Code First is defined on the Ado.Net team blog as such: Code First allows you to define your model using C# or VB.Net classes, optionally additional configuration can be performed using attributes on your classes and properties or by using a Fluent API. Your model can be used to generate a database schema or to map to an existing database. Entity Framework Code First follows some conventions to determine when to cascade delete on a relationship.  More details can be found on MSDN: If a foreign key on the dependent entity is not nullable, then Code First sets cascade delete on the relationship. If a foreign key on the dependent entity is nullable, Code First does not set cascade delete on the relationship, and when the principal is deleted the foreign key will be set to null. The multiplicity and cascade delete behavior detected by convention can be overridden by using the fluent API. For more information, see Configuring Relationships with Fluent API (Code First). Our DbContext consists of 4 DbSets: public DbSet<Team> Teams { get; set; } public DbSet<Player> Players { get; set; } public DbSet<Mascot> Mascots { get; set; } public DbSet<Game> Games { get; set; } When we set the Mascot –> Team relationship to required, Entity Framework will automatically delete the Mascot when the Team is deleted.  This can be done either using the [Required] data annotation attribute, or by overriding the OnModelCreating method of your DbContext and using the fluent API. Data Annotations: public class Mascot { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } [Required] public virtual Team Team { get; set; } } Fluent API: protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder) { modelBuilder.Entity<Mascot>().HasRequired(m => m.Team); } The Player –> Team relationship is automatically handled by the Code First conventions. When a Team is deleted, the Team property for all the players on that team will be set to null.  No additional configuration is required, however all the Player entities must be loaded into memory for the cascading to work properly. The Game –> Team relationship causes some grief in our Code First example.  If we try setting the HomeTeam and AwayTeam relationships to required, Entity Framework will attempt to set On Cascade Delete for the HomeTeam and AwayTeam foreign keys when creating the database tables.  As we saw in the database first example, this causes a circular reference error and throws the following SqlException: Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_Games_Teams_AwayTeam_Id' on table 'Games' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints. Could not create constraint. To solve this problem, we need to disable the default cascade delete behaviour using the fluent API: protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder) { modelBuilder.Entity<Mascot>().HasRequired(m => m.Team); modelBuilder.Entity<Team>() .HasMany(t => t.HomeGames) .WithRequired(g => g.HomeTeam) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); modelBuilder.Entity<Team>() .HasMany(t => t.AwayGames) .WithRequired(g => g.AwayTeam) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); base.OnModelCreating(modelBuilder); } Unfortunately, this means we need to manually manage the cascade delete behaviour.  When a Team is deleted, we need to manually delete all the home and away Games for that Team. foreach (Game awayGame in jets.AwayGames.ToArray()) { entities.Games.Remove(awayGame); } foreach (Game homeGame in homeGames) { entities.Games.Remove(homeGame); } entities.Teams.Remove(jets); entities.SaveChanges();   Overriding the Defaults – When and How To As you have seen, the default behaviour of Entity Framework Code First can be overridden using the fluent API.  This can be done by overriding the OnModelCreating method of your DbContext, or by creating separate model override files for each entity.  More information is available on MSDN.   Going Further These were simple examples but they helped us illustrate a couple of points. First of all, we were able to demonstrate the default behaviour of Entity Framework when dealing with cascading deletes, specifically how entity relationships affect the outcome. Secondly, we showed you how to modify the code and control the behaviour to get the outcome you're looking for. Finally, we showed you how easy it is to explore this kind of thing, and we're hoping that you get a chance to experiment even further. For example, did you know that: Entity Framework Code First also works seamlessly with SQL Azure (MSDN) Database creation defaults can be overridden using a variety of IDatabaseInitializers  (Understanding Database Initializers) You can use Code Based migrations to manage database upgrades as your model continues to evolve (MSDN) Next Steps There's no time like the present to start the learning, so here's what you need to do: Get up-to-date in Visual Studio 2010 (VS2010 | SP1) or Visual Studio 2012 (VS2012) Build yourself a project to try these concepts out (or download the sample project) Get into the community and ask questions! There are a ton of great resources out there and community members willing to help you out (like these two guys!). Good luck! • Do I need to manually create indexes for a DBIx::Class belongs_to relationship

    - by Dancrumb
I'm using the DBIx::Class modules for an ORM approach to an application I have. I'm having some problems with my relationships. I have the following package MySchema::Result::ClusterIP; use strict; use warnings; use base qw/DBIx::Class::Core/; our $VERSION = '1.0'; __PACKAGE__->load_components(qw/InflateColumn::Object::Enum Core/); __PACKAGE__->table('cluster_ip'); __PACKAGE__->add_columns( # Columns here ); __PACKAGE__->set_primary_key('objkey'); __PACKAGE__->belongs_to( 'configuration' => 'MySchema::Result::Configuration', 'config_key'); __PACKAGE__->belongs_to( 'cluster' => 'MySchema::Result::Cluster', { 'foreign.config_key' => 'self.config_key', 'foreign.id' => 'self.cluster_id' } ); As well as package MySchema::Result::Cluster; use strict; use warnings; use base qw/DBIx::Class::Core/; our $VERSION = '1.0'; __PACKAGE__->load_components(qw/InflateColumn::Object::Enum Core/); __PACKAGE__->table('cluster'); __PACKAGE__->add_columns( # Columns here ); __PACKAGE__->set_primary_key('objkey'); __PACKAGE__->belongs_to( 'configuration' => 'MySchema::Result::Configuration', 'config_key'); __PACKAGE__->has_many('cluster_ip' => 'MySchema::Result::ClusterIP', { 'foreign.config_key' => 'self.config_key', 'foreign.cluster_id' => 'self.id' }); There are a couple of other modules, but I don't believe that they are relevant. When I attempt to deploy this schema, I get the following error: DBIx::Class::Schema::deploy(): DBI Exception: DBD::mysql::db do failed: Can't create table 'test.cluster_ip' (errno: 150) [ for Statement "CREATE TABLE `cluster_ip` ( `objkey` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `config_key` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL, `cluster_id` char(16) NOT NULL, INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key_cluster_id` (`config_key`, `cluster_id`), INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key` (`config_key`), PRIMARY KEY (`objkey`), CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key_cluster_id` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`, `cluster_id`) REFERENCES `cluster` (`config_key`, `id`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE, CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`) REFERENCES `configuration` (`config_key`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE ) ENGINE=InnoDB"] at test_deploy.pl line 18 (running "CREATE TABLE `cluster_ip` ( `objkey` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `config_key` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL, `cluster_id` char(16) NOT NULL, INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key_cluster_id` (`config_key`, `cluster_id`), INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key` (`config_key`), PRIMARY KEY (`objkey`), CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key_cluster_id` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`, `cluster_id`) REFERENC ES `cluster` (`config_key`, `id`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE, CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`) REFERENCES `configuration` (`conf ig_key`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE ) ENGINE=InnoDB") at test_deploy.pl line 18 From what I can tell, MySQL is complaining about the FOREIGN KEY constraint, in particular, the REFERENCE to (config_key, id) in the cluster table. From my reading of the MySQL documentation, this seems like a reasonable complaint, especially in regards to the third bullet point on this doc page. Here's my question. Am I missing something in the DBIx::Class module? I realize that I could explicitly create the necessary index to match up with this foreign key constraint, but that seems to be repetitive work. Is there something I should be doing to make this occur implicitly?

  • Legit? Two foreign keys referencing the same primary key.

    - by Ryan
Hi All, I'm a web developer and have recently started a project with a company. Currently, I'm working with their DBA on getting the schema laid out for the site, and we've come to a disagreement regarding the design on a couple tables, and I'd like some opinions on the matter. Basically, we are working on a site that will implement a "friends" network. All users of the site will be contained in a table tblUsers with (PersonID int identity PK, etc). What I am wanting to do is to create a second table, tblNetwork, that will hold all of the relationships between users, with (NetworkID int identity PK, Owners_PersonID int FK, Friends_PersonID int FK, etc). Or conversely, remove the NetworkID, and have both the Owners_PersonID and Friends_PersonID shared as the Primary key. This is where the DBA has his problem. Saying that "he would only implement this kind of architecture in a data warehousing schema, and not for a website, and this is just another example of web developers trying to take the easy way out." Now obviously, his remark was a bit inflammatory, and that have helped motivate me to find an suitable answer, but more so, I'd just like to know how to do it right. I've been developing databases and programming for over 10 years, have worked with some top-notch minds, and have never heard this kind of argument. What the DBA is wanting to do is instead of storing both the Owners_PersonId and Friends_PersonId in the same table, is to create a third table tblFriends to store the Friends_PersonId, and have the tblNetwork have (NetworkID int identity PK, Owner_PersonID int FK, FriendsID int FK(from TBLFriends)). All that tblFriends would house would be (FriendsID int identity PK, Friends_PersonID(related back to Persons)). To me, creating the third table is just excessive in nature, and does nothing but create an alias for the Friends_PersonID, and cause me to have to add (what I view as unneeded) joins to all my queries, not to mention the extra cycles that will be necessary to perform the join on every query. Thanks for reading, appreciate comments. Ryan

  • FluentNHibernate Many-To-One References where Foreign Key is not to Primary Key and column names are

    - by Todd Langdon
I've been sitting here for an hour trying to figure this out... I've got 2 tables (abbreviated): CREATE TABLE TRUST ( TRUSTID NUMBER NOT NULL, ACCTNBR VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL ) CONSTRAINT TRUST_PK PRIMARY KEY (TRUSTID) CREATE TABLE ACCOUNTHISTORY ( ID NUMBER NOT NULL, ACCOUNTNUMBER VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL, TRANSAMT NUMBER(38,2) NOT NULL POSTINGDATE DATE NOT NULL ) CONSTRAINT ACCOUNTHISTORY_PK PRIMARY KEY (ID) I have 2 classes that essentially mirror these: public class Trust { public virtual int Id {get; set;} public virtual string AccountNumber { get; set; } } public class AccountHistory { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public virtual Trust Trust {get; set;} public virtual DateTime PostingDate { get; set; } public virtual decimal IncomeAmount { get; set; } } How do I do the many-to-one mapping in FluentNHibernate to get the AccountHistory to have a Trust? Specifically, since it is related on a different column than the Trust primary key of TRUSTID and the column it is referencing is also named differently (ACCTNBR vs. ACCOUNTNUMBER)???? Here's what I have so far - how do I do the References on the AccountHistoryMap to Trust??? public class TrustMap : ClassMap<Trust> { public TrustMap() { Table("TRUST"); Id(x => x.Id).Column("TRUSTID"); Map(x => x.AccountNumber).Column("ACCTNBR"); } } public class AccountHistoryMap : ClassMap<AccountHistory> { public AccountHistoryMap() { Table("TRUSTACCTGHISTORY"); Id (x=>x.Id).Column("ID"); References<Trust>(x => x.Trust).Column("ACCOUNTNUMBER").ForeignKey("ACCTNBR").Fetch.Join(); Map(x => x.PostingDate).Column("POSTINGDATE"); ); I've tried a few different variations of the above line but can't get anything to work - it pulls back AccountHistory data and a proxy for the Trust; however it says no Trust row with given identifier. This has to be something simple. Anyone? Thanks in advance.

  • Java: Best practices for turning foreign horror-code into clean API...?

    - by java.is.for.desktop
Hello, everyone! I have a project (related to graph algorithms). It is written by someone else. The code is horrible: public fields, no getters/setters huge methods, all public some classes have over 20 fields some classes have over 5 constructors (which are also huge) some of those constructors just left many fields null (so I can't make some fields final, because then every second constructor signals errors) methods and classes rely on each other in both directions I have to rewrite this into a clean and understandable API. Problem is: I myself don't understand anything in this code. Please give me hints on analyzing and understanding such code. I was thinking, perhaps, there are tools which perform static code analysis and give me call graphs and things like this.

  • Foreign key refering to primary keys across multiple tables?

    - by sanjay bharkatiya
hi , i have three tables say city, state and road 1) city - city_id(PK),name 2) state- Stt_id(PK),name 3) Road- Edge_id(PK), Admin_id(FK) where Admin_id refers to city_id and Stt_id both. This is done because the tables are too huge. say city_id contains 1,2,3 and Stt_id contains 4,5,6 now if i am inserting 1,2,3,4,5,6 in admin_id it is throuing an error .. what is the solution of my problem, regards sanjay

  • How to virtually delete data from multiple tables that are linked by a foreign key ?

    - by Shantanu Gupta
I am using Sql Server 2005 This is a part of my database diagram. I want to perform deletion on my database which will start from tblDomain up tp tblSubTopics. Consider that each table has IsDeleted column which has to be marked true if request was made to delete data. But that data shoud remain their physically. Tables which will have IsDeleted Column are tblDomain tblSubject tblTopic tblSubTopic Now I want, if a user marks one domain as deleted then all the refrence field should also get marked as deleted. i.e. 1 domain is related to 5 subjects, those 5 subjects are related to 25 topics, those 25 topics are related to 500 subtopics and so on. Then how should i mark all these fileds as Deleted. ?

  • One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints in SQL Script

    - by Musikero31
    Need help on this. I'm just wondering why this error occurred. Below is the script concerned. SELECT loc.ID ,loc.LocCode ,loc.LocName ,st.StateName ,reg.RegionName ,ctry.CountryName ,ISNULL(CONVERT(DATE, loc.UpdatedDate), CONVERT(DATE,loc.CreatedDate)) AS [ModifiedDate] ,stf.Name AS [ModifiedBy] FROM Spkr_Country AS ctry WITH (NOLOCK) INNER JOIN Spkr_Location AS loc WITH (NOLOCK) ON ctry.ID = loc.CountryID INNER JOIN Spkr_State AS st WITH (NOLOCK) ON loc.StateID = st.ID INNER JOIN Spkr_Region AS reg WITH (NOLOCK) ON loc.RegionID = reg.ID INNER JOIN Staff AS stf ON ISNULL(loc.UpdatedBy, loc.CreatedBy) = stf.StaffId WHERE (loc.IsActive = 1) AND ( (@LocCode = '') OR ( @LocCode <> '' AND loc.LocCode LIKE @LocCode + '%' ) ) AND ( (@RegionID < 1) OR ( @RegionID > 0 AND loc.RegionID = @RegionID ) ) AND ( (@StateID < 1) OR ( @StateID > 0 AND loc.StateID = @StateID ) ) AND ( (@CountryID < 1) OR ( @CountryID > 0 AND loc.CountryID = @CountryID ) ) The error probably occurred here INNER JOIN Staff AS stf ON ISNULL(loc.UpdatedBy, loc.CreatedBy) = stf.StaffId The requirement that I wanted is that if the loc.UpdatedBy is null, it will use the loc.CreatedBy column. However, when I used this, it generated the error mentioned. In the database, the loc.CreatedBy is not null while the loc.UpdatedBy is nullable. I checked it by running the script but it's working fine. How do I do with it? What's wrong with my code? Please help.

  • Database design - How can I have a foreign key of the primary key in the same table?

    - by Sergio Tapia
My database has to store all the available departments in my company. Some departments are sub-departments on another existing department. I've decided to solve this like this: Departments ID Description HeadOfDepartment ParentDepartment ParentDepartment can be null, indicating it is a root department. If it has a parent I'll act accordingly, my question is how can I code this in Microsoft SQL?
