• Is there a way to display navmesh agent path in Unity?

  I'm currently making a prototype for a game I plan to develop. As far as I did, I managed to set up the navigation mesh and my navmeshagents. I would like to display the path they are following when setDestination() is fired. I did some researches but didn't find anything about it. EDIT 1 : So I instantiate an empty object with a LineRenderer and I have a line bewteen my agent and the destination. Still I've not all the points when the path has to avoid an obstacle. Furthermore, I wonder if the agent.path does reflect the real path that the agent take as I noticed that it actually follow a "smoothier" path. • "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lboost_python-mt" error when installing pycuda 2011.2.2

  I am installing pycuda2011.2.2 on ubuntu 11.10, but can't complete it. When i do pycuda-2011.2.2 $ make -j 4 I get this error: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lboost_python-mt , /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcuda I got 1 exact problem match in google search and solution as well : $ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libboost_python-mt-py26 /usr/lib/libboost_python-mt But booooom, My problem doesn't vanish. It makes me wonder that why there are no relavant results in google search, as if only I have this problem. What is wrong ? Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

  I work full time on an android project and am very comfortable with both java and the android framework. On a good day, I would rate my abilities at an 8, and maybe a 7 on a bad day. I've recently found myself with more free time then I'm used too, so I have been working on a lot of personal projects. I am beginning to wonder what others think about this; is it worth my time to continue experimenting and pushing Android, or would I be better off learning another language? What do you all think about this? What would you do with more free time and energy than you know what to do with?

• Discover What Powers Your Favorite Websites

  Have you ever wondered if the site you’re visiting is powered by WordPress or if the webapp you’re using is powered by Ruby on Rails?  With these extensions for Google Chrome, you’ll never have to wonder again. Geeks love digging under the hood to see what makes their favorite apps and sites tick.  But opening the “View Source” window today doesn’t tell you everything there is to know about a website.  Plus, even if you can tell what CMS is powering a website from its source, it can be tedious to dig through lines of code to find what you’re looking for.  Also, the HTML code never tells you what web server a site is running on or what version of PHP it’s using.  With three extensions for Google Chrome you’ll never have to wonder again.  Note that some sites may not give as much information, but still, you’ll find enough data from most sites to be interesting. Discover Web Frameworks and Javascript Libraries with Chrome Sniffer If you want to know what CMS is powering a site or if it’s using Google Analytics or Quantcast, this is the extension for you.  Chrome Sniffer (link below) identifies over 40 different frameworks, and is constantly adding more.  It shows the logo of the main framework on the site on the left of your address bar.  Here wee see Chrome Sniffer noticed that How-To Geek is powered by WordPress.   Click the logo to see other frameworks on the site.  We can see that the site also has Google Analytics and Quantcast.  If you want more information about the framework, click on its logo and the framework’s homepage will open in a new tab. As another example, we can see that the Tumblr Staff blog is powered by Tumblr (of course), the Discus comment system, Quantcast, and the Prototype JavaScript framework. Or here’s a site that’s powered by Drupal, Google Analytics, Mollom spam protection, and jQuery.  Chrome Sniffer definitely uncovers a lot of neat stuff, so if you’re into web frameworks you’re sure to enjoy this extension. Find Out What Web Server The Site is Running On Want to know whether the site you’re looking at is running on IIS or Appache?  The Web Server Notifier extension for Chrome (link below) lets you easily recognize the web server a site is running on by its favicon on the right of the address bar.  Click the icon to see more information. Some web servers will show you a lot of information about their server, including version, operating system, PHP version, OpenSSL version, and more. Others will simply tell you their name. If the site is powered by IIS, you can usually tell the version of Windows Server its running on since the IIS versions are specific to a version of Windows.  Here we see that Microsoft.com is running on the latest and greatest – Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. Discover Web Technologies Powering Sites Wondering if a webapp is powered by Ruby on Rails or ASP.NET?  The Web Technology Notifier extension for Chrome (link below), from the same developer as the Web Server Notifier, will let you easily discover the backend of a site.  You’ll see the technology’s favicon on the right of your address bar, and, as with the other extension, can get more information by clicking the icon. Here we can see that Backpack from 37signals is powered by the Phusion Passenger module to run Ruby on Rails.   Microsoft’s new Docs.com Office Online apps is powered by ASP.NET…   And How-To Geek has PHP running to power WordPress. • How to reset settings when Unity won't finish booting?

  I have a new 12.04 installation and I messed things up after trying to move /home to an NTFS partition, which I later learned was a bad idea. I removed references to the NTFS partition on fstab and created new users on the ext4 / partition. Now I can't get Unity to start up properly for any user. I get the GUI with only three Launch icons (none of which are clickable) and no bar at the top. The keyboard seems to the nonfunctional after I enter my credentials. The interesting thing is that I can boot when I go through recovery mode and select resume. I wonder whether I am creating the new users properly. What is the correct protocol for doing so in order to ensure that they can run Unity?

  I still have a 30-second delay on the white boot-up screen before Xubuntu loads after trying various combinations of bless --device as recommended here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation#Avoid_long_EFI_wait_before_GRUB I wonder if anyone has experienced this before, or can point me to some good steps for troubleshooting this issue? I have cycled my macbook dozens of times, it would be great to be able to boot quicker. I am single-booting Xubuntu 14.04 (no Mac OSX partitions or any other OS, just a GRUB partition at sda1, a main partition at sda2, and a swap at the end of the drive). Suggestions very appreciated.

• How do you get aware of new tools?

  How do you get aware of new tools (libraries, applications, etc)? This question is only about "getting aware" that some tool exist and could be used. Learning and trying is different issue. Right now I get most awareness from stackexchange and freshmeat sites. But I wonder if there are more efficient way. E.g. 80% of freshmeat projects are no-use for me, but it reasonable overhead, because tools that I find trough it save me days or even weeks. Here are some related, but a bit different questions: How much time do you invest in exploring new technology? How to become aware of new languages, techniques and methodologies? • When is a Use Case layer needed?

  In his blog post The Clean Architecture Uncle Bob suggests a 4-layer architecture. I understand the separation between business rules, interfaces and infrastructure, but I wonder if/when it's necessary to have separate layers for domain objects and use cases. What added value will it bring, compared to just having the uses cases as "domain services" in the domain layer? The only useful info I've found on the web about a use case layer is an article by Martin Fowler, who seems to contradict Uncle Bob about its necessity: At some point I may run into the problems, and then I'll make a Use Case Controller - but only then. And even when I do that I rarely consider the Use Case Controllers to occupy a separate layer in the system architecture. Edit: I stumbled upon a video of Uncle Bob's Architecture: The Lost Years keynote, in which he explains this architecture in depth. Very informative.

  I am using pdf2djvu to convert a pdf file into a djvu file, but got this error while trying to convert to either bundled or indirect multi-page djvu file: $ pdf2djvu 1.pdf -o 1.djvu 1.pdf: - page #1 -> #1 Bogus memory allocation size $ pdf2djvu 1.pdf -i 1.djvu 1.pdf: - page #1 -> #1 Bogus memory allocation size I was wondering what is wrong here and how I shall fix the problem? • Learning about security and finding exploits

  First things first: I have absolutely no interest in learning how to crack systems for personal enrichment, hurting other people or doing anything remotely malicious. I understand the basis of many exploits (XSS, SQL injection, use after free etc.), though I've never performed any myself. I even have some idea about how to guard web applications from common exploits (like the aforementioned XSS and SQL injection) Reading this question about the Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability from the Security SE piqued my curiosity and made me wonder: how did someone even find out about this exploit? What tools did they use? How did they know what to look for? I'm wary about visiting hacker dens online for fear of getting my own system infected (the Defcon stories make me paranoid). So what's a good, safe place to start learning?

• Backup, clean install and restore

  Due to the route I came into Ubuntu I now have 12.10 upgraded from 12.04 on an NTFS file system. I've invested a lot of time getting everything as I want it, vis packages installed and settings, etc. I wonder if there is an easy method of: 1 Backing up the whole system so that I can; 2 Do a squeaky clean install of 12.10 on ext4 with bells and whistles then; 3 Restore my backup so that my system behaves as it did before the reinstall? Sorry if this seems terribly obvious, but I don't want to find all the problems when it's too late. TIA.

  I am taking a module called "Requirements Analysis & Design" in a local university. Common module, I'd say (on software development life cycle (SDLC) and UML). But there is a lot of things I wonder if they are actually (strictly) practiced in the industry. For example, will a domain class diagram, an not anything extra (from design class), be strictly the output from Analysis or Discovery phase? I'm sure many times you will think a bit about the technical implementation too? Else you might end up with a design class diagram later that is very different from the original domain class diagram? I also find it hard to remember what diagrams are from Initiation, Discovery, Design etc etc. Plus these phases vary from SDLC to SDLC, I believe? So I usually will create a diagram when I think will be useful. Is it the wrong way?

CSS and JS) are made and saved in UTF-8 encoding In PHP, I set the char-set on top of the main page (this page includes all others) with: header('Content-type: text/html; charset=utf-8'); In the same page I have this html meta tag: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> Then I stubled upon an external css file that has this on first line: @charset "UTF-8"; And now I wonder, should I set the charset INSIDE all my CSS/JS files too, like that? And/or should I serve each file with charset=utf-8 in the meta tag?

Some people don't make test cases and just develop the way their senior have done in their projects. • Why is using C++ libraries so complicated?

  First of all, I want to note I love C++ and I'm one of those people who thinks it is easier to code in C++ than Java. Except for one tiny thing: libraries. In Java you can simply add some jar to the build path and you're done. In C++ you usually have to set multiple paths for the header files and the library itself. In some cases, you even have to use special build flags. I have mainly used Visual Studio, Code Blocks and no IDE at all. All 3 options do not differ much when talking about using external libraries. I wonder why was there made no simpler alternative for this? Like having a special .zip file that has everything you need in one place so the IDE can do all the work for you setting up the build flags. Is there any technical barrier for this?

  In Google Webmaster Tools, I noticed that my front page was indexed two times: example.com/ example.com/?chocaid=397 I know that I could fix this with the use of link type canonical, but I wonder: Where does this parameter come from? There are various sites that have pages indexed with this very parameter/value: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=chocaid%3D397. I looked for similarities between these sites. but couldn't find a conclusive one: It's often the front page, but not in every case. Some are NSFW, but not all. • why not use unmanaged safe code in c#

  There is an option in c# to execute code unchecked. It's generally not advised to do so, as managed code is much safer and it overcomes a lot of problems. However I am wondering, if you're sure your code won't cause errors, and you know how to handle memory then why (if you like fast code) follow the general advice? I am wondering this since I wrote a program for a video camera, which required some extremely fast bitmap manipulation. I made some fast graphical algorithms myself, and they work excellent on the bitmaps using unmanaged code. Now I wonder in general, if you're sure you don't have memory leaks, or risks of crashes, why not use unmanaged code more often ? PS my background: I kinda rolled into this programming world and I work alone (I do so for a few years) and so I hope this software design question isn't that strange. I don't really have other people out there like a teacher to ask such things.

  When do the SOLID principles become YAGNI? As programmers we make trade-offs all the time, between complexity, maintainability, time to build and so forth. Amongst others, two of the smartest guidelines for making choices are in my mind the SOLID principles and YAGNI. If you don't need it; don't build it, and keep it clean. Now for example, when I watch the dimecast series on SOLID, I see it starts out as a fairly simple program, and ends up as a pretty complex one (end yes complexity is also in the eye of the beholder), but it still makes me wonder: when do SOLID principles turn into something you don't need? All solid principles are ways of working that enable use to make changes at a later stage. But what if the problem to solve is a pretty simple one and it's a throwaway application, then what? • Why isn't reflection on the SCJP / OCJP?

  I read through Kathy Sierra's SCJP study guide and I will read it again more throughly to improve myself as a Java programmer and be able to take the certification either Java 6 or wait for the Java 7 exam (I'm already employed as Java developer so I'm in no hurry to take the exam.) Now I wonder why reflection is not on the exam? The book it seems covers everything that should be on the exam and AFAIK reflection is at least as important as threads if not more used inpractice since many frameworks use reflection. Do you know why reflection is not part of the SCJP? Do you agree that it's at least important to know reflection as threads? Thanks for any answer
