• How to proxy with apache site from same domain but another port as a subfolder?

  So I have a problem - I have my main site on apache web server on debian on port 80; I develop a web server (in some C++ or C#) and it currently runs on port 6666. But some people are living under firewalls and can access only port 80. I wonder if it is possible via apache map all requests to say mysite.com:80/6666/url as if they were to mysite.com:6666/url, not map via redirection, but really make apache stream content from my site to user as if it were in some folder?

• Learning Java with a simple project

  As i remember the time when i was learning PHP, it was suggested to build a simple blog or a forum after reading the language fundamentals. I was told/read that this would cover everything that I would need to learn about PHP from a beginners book. This advice was out there in a number of places, and after following and working with PHP it seems quite good advice. Now, i am learning Java and reading the book "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel. I wonder if there is any such set of similar, small projects that I could take up, that would cover all the essentials and most of what is covered in the book.

• Software center crashing in 12.04

  i'm having issues with the Software Center. I'm trying to install Google Chrome, but can't because the software center crashes as soon as it opens. I've looked around at similar topics and found plenty but none of the suggested solutions have worked, so I wonder if this is different. When I type 'software-center' into the terminal, I get the error that other's have had: softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file I know this might seem like a duplicate, but none of the solution worked. Sorry, kind of new to Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu 12.04 lts

• Network programming under windows: is WSA functions can be more complete than pSock functions [on hold]

  I plan to make a set of classic socket functions to simplify their usages. Since i work under windows and linux indifferently i usually make it portable (it's not my first version of this set of functions), but i want to do something different this time and dedicate one version to windows, and one other to linux. With that i wonder for the windows version, if the WSA* functions can have any interest using them instead of the psock ones. I have found nothing about a comparison between them, so if any of you have any idea, suggestion, link or benchmark ?

  As I learn more about C and C++ I'm starting to wonder: How can a compiler use newer features of processors without limiting it just to people with, for example, Intel Core i7's? Think about it: new processors come out every year with lots of new technologies. However you can't just only target them since a significant portion of the market will not upgrade to the latest and greatest processors for a long time. I'm more or less wondering how this is handled in general by C and C++ devs and compilers. Do compilers make code similar to if SSE is supported, do this using it, else do that using the slower way or do developers have to implement their algorithm twice, or what? More or less how do you release software that takes advantage of newer processor technologies while still keeping a low common denominator?

  I am into programming since last 3 years. But I seems to be lost in it. I am not able to get good at it even though I code everyday. suppose I solve one problem, I will wander from solution to solution and implement some other solution. I cant focus much. I get many defects for the code I write. I afraid of code I dont know why if I dont finish it on time my boss will fire me etc. I enjoy coding but not all the time. How to increase patience? I always wonder how do I become the best coder like many exceptional programmers. • HTML5 Audio: Which formats? Ditch Ogg Vorbis in favor of Ogg Opus? Is MP3 still needed?

  I'm currently working on a website which has to stream audio files. Since bandwidth is always an issue, the file size should be as small as possible. I wonder what audio formats I should provide. MP3 - Most common format but low quality, I don't know if it's even required, since AAC is well supported by the browsers incapable of playing free codecs MP4 AAC - Nice quality / small filesize, supported by Safari / Mobile Devices / IE9 / Flash / Chrome A free codec - well, until recently, there only was Ogg Vorbis, but Ogg Opus is standardized now and it's really good! Questions: Is it time yet to use Opus instead if Vorbis? Firefox supports Opus since version 15, and Opera has support on its roadmap - I guess Chrome will follow in the future too. Do I still have to provide an MP3 file?

• Problems with NAT Adapater since upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

  I was running Ubuntu 12.04 w/ VirtualBox installed. I was using the NAT interface to connect to everything. Basically running VBOX for testing some things and a Windows VM for Netflix.. Was back to working in my VMs today and noticed that I was unable to connect to the internet. In the VM settings I'm using the NAT adapter, however I noticed there is no NAT adapter in the Network Settings under Preferences in VBOX. Not quite sure what happened but wonder what is going on? I noticed there are some posts about changes DNSMASQ and configuring a bridge mode, but this worked out of the box under 12.04 and since the upgrade this no longers work. Need some help please

• Why do most of us use 'i' as a loop counter variable?

  Has anyone thought about why so many of us repeat this same pattern using the same variable names? for (int i = 0; i < foo; i++) { // ... } It seems most code I've ever looked at uses i, j, k and so on as iteration variables. I suppose I picked that up from somewhere, but I wonder why this is so prevalent in software development. Is it something we all picked up from C or something like that? Just an itch I've had for a while in the back of my head.

• I cannot upgrade to 12.10 because of graphic-card, Radeon HD 3450

  I wonder what has happened. I have Ubuntu 12.04 and Ati Radeon HD 3450 and that has supported 3D, now suddenly it does not accept my graphic-card. I really would like to know what to do? Should I buy a new graphic card or is there a way to use my graphic-card on 12.10? And if so what is there a graphic-card I should buy? My Ati is functioning with 3D, on 12.04 I don't understand why it will not upgrade to 12.10.

• Subscribe/Publish Model in Web-based Application (c#) - Best Practices for Event Handlers

  I was recently exposed to a desktop application that uses an publish/subscribe model to handle commands, events, etc. I can't seem to find any good examples of using this in a web application, so I wonder if I am off base in trying to use this for web based development (on the server side)? I'm using asp.net c#. My main question in regards to the design is: When using a publish/subscribe model, is it better to have generic commands/events that pass no parameters and then have the subscribers look at static context objects that contain the data relevant to the event? Or is it better to create custom arguments for every event that contain data related to the event? The whole concept of a global container seems so convenient but at the same time seems to break encapsulation. Any thoughts or best practices from anyone who has implemented this type of model in a web based application? Even suggestions on this model out of the scope of my question are appreciated.

• wordpress restored from backup asking for ftp

  I backed up my /var/www/wordpress folder to my external harddisk and restored it back. Now when I add a new plugin I am asked for ftp access to my localhost. I wonder why ? As far as I could go /var/www/wordpress and its subfolders/files are own'ed by root. I have logged in to my wordpress as admin root. I dont know why I need to setup ftpd, but I tried that too. • Can I use the test suite from an open source project to verify that my own 'compatible library' is compatible?

  The question Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project? makes me wonder what would be considered a clean-room implementation in the era of open source projects. Hypothetically, if I were to develop a library which duplicates the publicly documented interface of an open-source library, without ever looking at the source code for that library, could that code ever be considered a derivative work? Obviously it would need the same class hierarchy and method signatures, so that it could be a drop-in replacement - could that in itself, be enough to provoke a copyright claim? What about if I used the test suite of the open source project to verify whether my clean implementation behaved in the same way as the original library? Would using the test suite be enough to dirty my clean code? As should be expected from a question like this, I am not looking for specific legal advice, but looking to document experiences people may have had with this sort of issue.

• Permissions depending on parameters passed to application

  I have a java app that writes to a very important table I have. This is sudo protected, but this app takes a parameters for where the output should go. The default is the REAL DEAL but the "output" parameter takes priority over the default, so if a user provides a path that they have write permission for, say: /home/username/mystuff then I would like for users to be allowed to write to these directories. The app is launched in a shell script, so I am wondering if I can check that the string does not equal /path/to/real/deal and not empty (since /path/to/real/deal is the default) and allow users to write to places they have permissions for. My impression of linux permissions is that it is tied to the application itself and cannot be conditionally approved, but I wonder if there is some bash fu or alternative method I can perform to get me my desired result.   When I'm using C# to write some code and I define an interface using Visual Studio 2010, it always includes a number of "using" statements (as shown in the example) using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace TestEngine.TestNameSpace { interface ITest1 { bool testMethod(int xyz); } } I wonder what these are for and if they are really necessary. Can I leave these out? Are they only necessary when I'm using those parts in my interface description?

• Why not sync folders outside home with Ubuntu One?

  It took me a while to find out that with Ubuntu One I can sync only folders in my home folder. On all other folders the Ubuntu One option is available in preferences, but the actual actions are greyed out. The Ubuntu One FAQ is quite clear on that: No, currently you can only select to synchronize folders inside your home directory. But I actually wonder why and if this is going to change and if there is a trick around it (an other one than setting my home to /) ? I personally don't have any important data in my home folder other than the program configs. All documents, pictures, music are on a folder called /data that is actually on a different partition. That makes it much easier when one wants to reinstall Ubuntu.

• Windows 8 and "Formerly known as Metro" apps, an experience with PDF app

  I'm slowing and surely getting used to Windows 8.  It is no doubt a slow process since I still run daily on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and 3 windows 7 box. A new quirk I found regarding Windows 8.  I never thought it was important to learn how to close a "formerly known as Metro" app (what do we call those these days?).  Then I attached a portable drive to my laptop and opened up a PDF file, and I couldn't safely remove the hard drive afterwards because I did not know how to close the PDF reader app. I have since learned that if you want to close an app, you can try Alt + F4 mouse over the top left corner and swipe down, right-click to close you app Windows Key + TAB, right-click to close the app All these make me wonder, how do you do this in a phone or tablet?

• Comparing my version with the clean install

  I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since the version 9. Of course, I have 13.04 now and after installing a clean 13.04 to another computer, I've noticed quite a few differences (plymouth, lightdm, some software behaves differently, etc.). I've done quite a few customizations during the period so it's probably due to that. So I wonder if there is a way to see what's different between my and the clean version. Not the complete file list diff, but perhaps software package differences (synaptic?) or something that will be easier to read and compare. Is there a way?

  Whether clickjacking is an ethically responsible way of earning advertisement revenues is a subjective discussion and should not be discussed here. However, it appears that quite a lot of popular sites generate "popups" when you click either of their links or buttons. An example is the Party Poker advertisement (I am sure many of you will have seen this one). I wonder though, what kind of advertisement companies allow such techniques? Someone says that use is a big mistake. I wonder how is it? My question is when to use static methods and when not? I would like to hear answers from experts in this field (PHP OOP). • Continuous Integration, what are the strategies to manage binary content?

  Currently we are testing various configurations between Feature Branching and CI with Feature toggling. I can see there are several viable options out there for the code, but I also know that CI totally relies on the possibility to merge the code. So I wonder, how do you manage CI with binary data, like art assets? I can also see another problem: all the code can be tested before to commit, I can even validate the data before to commit, but how can I test the art?! Should I use another methodology for art content?
