  • What's the best platform for blogging about coding? [closed]

    I'm toying with starting an occasional blog for posting odd bits of coding related stuff (mainly C++, probably). Are there any platforms which can be recommended as providing exceptionally good support (e.g syntax highlighting) for posting snippets of code ? (Or any to avoid because posting mono-spaced font blocks of text is a pain). Outcome: I accepted Josh K's answer because what I actually ended up doing was realizing I was more interested in articles than a blog style, getting back into LaTeX (after almost 20 years away from it), using the "listings" package for code, and pushing the HTML/PDF results to my ISP's static-hosting pages. (HTML generated using tex4ht). Kudos to the answers mentioning Wordpress, Tumblr and Jekyll; I spent some time looking into all of them.

  • Connecting to VPN / proxy with different port number

    I have an IP address, port, username, and password for one of those VPN / proxy services that allows you to use an IP address other than what your ISP gives you, but in the 'Edit Connections VPN' GUI I don't see where to enter a port. I enter the IP address under 'Gateway' and the username and password where it asks for it, but it doesn't work. I try to enter it with the IP address ending with a colon, followed by the port, but that doesn't work either (e.g. "1.1.1.1:9999"). Any idea how I could make it work? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.     Hi evryone I have question that really make me mad..I search every where and I couldn't find the answer.pleas read the details carefully: I have broadband (Wan mini-port PPPOE) account from a wierless network near from us...I'm receiving the signal with grid and Alfa AWUS036H wireless usb adapter.In all of windows version I can connect through my broadband when I do these steps 1.setup new connection or network 2.connect to the internet 3.setup new broadband connection then I but the ISP name(not Important just to remember my broadband connection) and then i put the username and password then connect. I can find and connect to my wireless networkbut when I make Dsl connection in ubuntu 12.04LTS and I put the username and password I couldn't connect.. I tried this tool"gnome dial up tool" and wouldn't work.. in other way..(how can I connect to broadband connection through ALFA USB adapter??) my wireless network have a servers when i check with winbox: mac adress ip adress server name version router board verson and I connect PPP through them... any answer will help me ..so we could solve this problem. thanks.

  • Slow on browsing web, but normal when using apt-get

    I have a problem with my fresh instalation of Ubuntu 11.10. The problem happen when i start up my browser and accessing website such google, askubuntu.com, facebook and other sites. frustate on the situation i try watch the progress in system monitor. the result from monitor shows that there is no data transfer when i try to accessing the page. firstly, i assume that it is the trouble from my ISP or my home connection. But it is not. When i try pinging google it shows transaction between my computer and the network but still null from browser. Then i tried to test the aptitude and it was work fine but still the browser won't recieve any packet from the internet. Here is the detail of my tools : Laptop : Toshiba Satellite e205 (network card atheros) Operating System : Ubuntu 11.04 dual booted with Win7 Browser : Mozilla Firefox comes up with the Ubuntu 11.10 installation Chrome : Last version (just yesterday install it) Thank You before :) [this question posted via win]

  • Trying to setup a gateway via pppoe

    I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a computer. I want to use this computer as a router for my other computers. The computer only has 1 network card, there is no slot for a second card. I can get the computer to connect to my ISP via pppoe and it can access the web. However the other computers on my local net can only see the router computer. I have tried 2 different pppoe packages, roaring penguin and network-manager-gnome. When I get it to work I will be replacing a 15 year old computer that is running Slackware 7.1. The old computer is currently my router. It is running Roaring Penguin I tried to setup the new computer with the same Roaring Penguin parameters as the old computer. Bob

  • Port forward based on external IP (for VPS hosting)

    What I want to do is to host a VPS. First, I'd like to set up a static IP address that forwards to my home IP address (so I can have more than one IP coming into my house). How can I do this without contacting my ISP (and is it even possible?; I don't care about paying for something that does this). Once I have the extra external IP address, how can I forward it to my VPS? How is my router supposed to differentiate between two separate external IP addresses?

    Possible Duplicate: What things required to host a website at home I want to create a temporary staging server which can be accessed (i.e. via browser) by other people that I want to show the website to (a business partner who is half way accross the world). IIRC, my ISP issues dynamic addresses so I may need to register with a (DNS server?) - not sure about this. Although I'm a software developer, I don't know much about the hardware side of things - and would appreciate help in getting me setup so I can show a website to a business partner.   • Asus 1001P freezes after chaging network settings

    I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on a Asus PC 1001P in a dual boot environment with XP. All has been running fine for several weeks, but: I've just changed ISP (from Tiscali to BT), and had already sorted out connection, registration, etc. on a Dell laptop. On the Asus I went into Ubuntu to alter the wireless network details (i.e. selected the new network, and entered the password). Ubuntu immediately started running slowly, and after rebooting it now freezes when it gets to the Ubuntu logo and gets no further. Please help, lovely Ubuntu experts.

  • Caching preventing users seeing site updates

    I'm experiencing a caching issue I can't explain. This is happening across browsers, IPs and ISPs. If a user force-refreshes, they see the new content. If they then refresh or return to the page, the old one displays. I've tried using headers via PHP such as header( 'Expires: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT' ); header( 'Last-Modified: ' . gmdate( 'D, d M Y H:i:s' ) . ' GMT' ); header( 'Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate' ); header( 'Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0', false ); header( 'Pragma: no-cache' ); Laid out correctly, at the very beginning of the file. The problem persists. A pan-ISP proxy is unlikely. Suggestions?

  • Why can't I view a specific websites?

    I am a netwrok administrator at a small company (22 PC) and i have a problem, and i don't know which could be the cause. I can't access a specific website from the LAN. I have a server which has 2 NICs(one to ISP and one to LAN). I have installed on the server (Bind DNS server and DHCP server) Debian 6 Server. I want to mention that "nslookup mcel.co.mz", and "dig my_site" is not working perfectly, I can't access the site from inside the LAN. I can't send emails to person that are located in that domain. When I dig mcel.co.mz @8.8.8.8 the domain is resolved. Why can't I view a specific websites? www.mcel.co.mz Why can't send email to person that are on some domains? @mcel.co.mz I don't have any rule configured in Debian Server which wouldn't let me acces the site.   • Safe way to send thousands of promotional emails

    My new partner has an email list with over 1 Million email addresses for targeted traffic (no spam... only genuine subscribers from his last startup ) But now I have a problem.. how can I sent an email to all those email addresses ? I can't use my ISP SMTP mailer, they will block me immediately for bulk mailing. I thought of a way to send emails slowly . Like dividing them in sets of few thousands and sending to each set daily .   • Wifi worked after reinstalling the driver, but why did it stopped working in the first place?

    I was having an issue with connecting to my wifi router since yesterday; could see the router in the wireless networks available but the router was not authenticating my password. I tried unblocking the hardware switches though non was blocked. Finally on discussing with the ISP i gave a re-installation of the wireless driver a try; and to my surprise that worked.(I was assuming faulty wifi router). So as per the subject of the question; I am very curious to know what actually happened that prevented me to connect to my wifi. Any logs that I could see to confirm the cause of this suspicious activity.

  • Segment subdomains with Google Analytics?

    So, when a website has multiple subdomains: www.example.com foo.example.com bar.example.com What is the best way to use Google Analytics to segment the data? I would prefer have access to 'All Data', 'Data from foo.example.com', and 'Data from bar.example.com'. I tried setting up 3 different views, and setting a filter on the foo/bar views that says: Include only traffic from the ISP domain that are equal to foo.example.com. However, I am not seeing any data collected into that View. I do, however, see all data in the 'All Data' view, but I can't figure out how to segment the data. I am including the analytics.js in the application.haml layout, which is always loaded in this app. Thanks!

  • Cannot access my own web page

    I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

  • I can't login to facebook from any browser

    I'm Using UBUNTU 12.04. I'm having problems with Facebook. It really hard to login. Takes like 3 or 5 min. At first I thought it was a flash problem but then I realized it could be some proxy's conf file. Other sites doesn't have problems. Yesterday I tried Tor-browser-bundle and I installed privoxy using this rules http://www.neilvandyke.org/privoxy-rules/ . Today I removed privoxy and the conf file with the Ubuntu software center and ubuntu-tweak. I don't really find the problem and my windows pc does not have any problem with the same modem. I don't have an ISP'S PROXY it just a direct Internet connection using automatic DHCP. Maybe I am missing something else. But I want to be sure so, I'm asking. PD: Sorry for my English I'm Argentinian.

  • possible to use an IP derived from Dynamic DNS in htaccess IP allow/deny commands?

    On a website I manage, I want to use an .htaccess file to allow access to a certain administrative directory only from my home IP address, which is dynamically assigned by my ISP and therefore changes -- not regularly, but it does happen. I also have an account from DynDNS and have one of the auto-update clients making sure it always points to my actual home IP address. I don't actually host anything at home; I just have set up the Dynamic DNS account. Is there any way to combine these features: that is, is it possible write the .htaccess allow/deny commands at my outside webhost in a way that my home IP address is not hard coded into the command, but instead is somehow derived from the Domain Name that the DynDNS has assigned me, by doing a real-time lookup every time the directory's .htaccess file is hit?   • Is it possible to configure Ubuntu as a software firewall?

    I have some systems running on Ubuntu in the private IP range 192.168.2.0-255 . These systems are connected to a switch and the switch is connected to the ISP's modem. Neither the switch nor the modem support firewall options. I don't have any firewall device and I'm not willing to individually configure firewalls on all the systems (via gui/iptables). Is it possible to make an Ubuntu system into something like a software firewall, so that all the traffic/packets sent to or from the WAN(internet) would be allowed/denied based on its firewall rules?

    Yesterday s**ked, and today ain't (sic) looking better. I have an application I have been working on and it can be slow to start when my ISP is down because of DNS. My ISP was down for 3 hours yesterday, so I didn't think much about this piece of code I had added, until I found that it is always slow to start. This code is supposed to return your IP address and my reading of the link suggests that should be immediate, but it isn't, at least on my machine. Oh, and yesterday before the internet went down, I upgraded (oymoron) to XP SP3, and have had other problems. So my questions / request: 1. Am I doing this right? 2. If you run this on your machine does it take 39 seconds to return your IP address? It does on mine. One other note, I did a packet capture and the first request did NOT go on the wire, but the second did, and was answered quickly. So the question is what happened in XP SP3 that I am missing, besides a brain. One last note. If I resolve a FQDN all is well.
