• Can't find openjdk's jre? No Java plugin in Chrome web browser.

  I have recently installed openjdk just to try out writing some java application $ dpkg -l | grep jdk ii openjdk-7-jdk 7u7-2.3.2a-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 OpenJDK Development Kit (JDK) ii openjdk-7-jre 7u7-2.3.2a-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT ii openjdk-7-jre-headless 7u7-2.3.2a-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT (headless) ii openjdk-7-jre-lib 7u7-2.3.2a-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 OpenJDK Java runtime (architecture independent libraries) That's what I have on my system. Although I have all this installed when in Chrome I go to a website which needs jre it can't find it. How can I fix it ?

• Wine installation on 12.04 LTS

  Installed wine from the Software Center and kept getting errors when trying to load windows programs. Uninstalled and did the apt-get installation of the latest version (1.5.7) Ran Wine configuration and get a "Failed to connect to the mount manager, the drive configuration cannot be edited" If i try to install a program it immediately goes to "Internal error" Any Ideas or possible solutions would be appreciated. • 2D Tile Map for Platformer, XML or SQLite?

  I'm developing a 2D platformer with some uni friends. We've based it upon the XNA Platformer Starter Kit which uses .txt files to store the tile map. While this is simple it does not give us enough control and flexibility with level design. I'm doing some research into whether to store level data in an XML file or in a database like SQLite. Which would be the best for this situation? Do either have any drawbacks (performance etc) compared to the other?

• Visual Studio 2010 Setup Projects and x64 Support

  I was taking the Windows Azure CmdLets project and getting it into an MSI just to make it easier to deploy in a nice package.  I ran into problems with the Setup project not being able to properly establish the right registry settings for an x64 environment. Even though you set the target platform on the Setup project to x64 the InstallUtil.lib that get’s run is still x86.  In order to have it work property, you need to follow the steps identified here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kz0ke5xt.aspx  The section “64-bit managed custom actions throw a System.BadImageFormatException exception” covers the steps you need to follow, using the Orca MSI editor to replace the InstallUtilLib.dll from the one that the Setup Project embeds (x86) to a x64 version. Now, works like a charm… Resultant installer here: http://cicoria.com/Downloads/AzureManagementCmdletsInstall.msi The CmdLets are the same ones from the Training Kit – November 2010 release.

• Hacking Windows 7 Phone

  So here is the Hack of the Week. For those who have had their heads in the closet and haven't heard Microsoft is coming out with this Windows Phone 7 - the mythical vapor ware for a number of years now has been made public. Like many Silverlight geeks especially we are estatic as this phone now public will run Silverlight as the primary way to develop applications for it. On the downside if you installed the developer kit, the VM for the phone lacks pretty much... um... everything... no sensors,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Own an iPad, iPhone, or Touch? Add GWB to your Home

  I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas? Here is a shot of my iPad 3G: Also, would anyone be interested in a Geekswithblogs.net custom background for the iPhone or iPad?  I can put something together real quick if there are any takers.

• Do leaderboard sets (in Game Center) allow 500 unique leaderboards?

  The Game Kit Programming Guide for iOS claims: The number of different leaderboards allowed increases to 500 leaderboards per game when leaderboard sets have been enabled...Leaderboard sets offer developers the ability to combine several leaderboards into a single group. But their example (see image below) implies that a single leaderboard is placed into multiple leaderboard sets. Is that the only way to be able to use the full 500 leaderboards? by combining the same leaderboard into multiple sets? I want to be able to have 500 unique leaderboards that are not duplicated between sets. Is this possible?

• OUYA and Unity set up problems

  I'm having trouble with the Unity / OUYA plugin. I'm using Unity 4 with the latest update on a Windows 7 machine. When I open the starter kit and try to compile the plugin I get the following error: Picked up _JAVA_OPTIONS: -Xmx512M And if I try to Build and Run I get this error: Error building Player: ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path. I'm stumped, I've gone through lots of forum posts here and on stackoverflow and I can't seem to resolve it. My environment variables look like this: PATH - C:\Users\dave\Documents\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130219\sdk\tools; C:\Users\dave\Documents\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130219\sdk\platform-tools\ JAVA_HOME - C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_45\ Everything in the OUYA Panel is white Any ideas?

• Is there a way to add Google Docs-like comments to any web page?

  You know the comments on Google Docs word processing documents? And how it creates a little discussion over in the right-hand margin? I love it. Great for collaboration. I want to free it from Google Docs so I can use it with clients to discuss mock-ups or scaffolded websites. Searching Google for "add comments [or discussions] to any website" only gets you results for adding blog-like comments (Disqus, JS-Kit, etc.) Anyone know of a solution for what I'm after here?

Some of the big SIs ask me, "Do we have any design patterns/guidelines we can use?". .. Alas website design is a very personal thing and each website will have different requirements and needs, however I am now pleased to say we've just launched "Oracle Fusion Applications Design Patterns" website.   The website is the result of many years of Oracle R&D into user interface design for Fusion applications and features a really cool web app which allows you to visualise the UI components in action.   I just going to install the GTK for creating a desktop application. But I want to know if we install the GTK then is it affect our web application server or php.ini or other features of web based application? I know there is no requirement of server for desktop but the GTK create the other php.ini . so is it affect my other applications? I downloaded the GTK Tool kit from here. So I am just little bit confusing that it should not affect my all running web applications. I think the php for desktop is a very interesting issue for all of us, so I just want to know the affection of desktop on web?

• Wheres my memory going?

  My machine keeps 'freezing' before eventaully logging out with all the programs exiting. This is rather annoying, and I think its because I keep running out of memory. I am not running any custom software, just netbeans, chrome etc. (Stuff I usually run on other ubuntu computers without issue). For some reason my memory usage is through the roof as seen here, but I can't quite figure out why. Here is a screenshot which may be useful with htop and gnome-system monitor open as user and as root. I notice that my console-kit-daemon is taking up about a gig of 'virtual memory'. Is that normal? Any tips/advice will be helpful. In the meantime I have ordered 2 x 4 gig ram sticks to try and just throw hardware at the issue.

• remove ssl from Google search results

  I am the webadmin of a WordPress site that serves up http pages statically. The problem is that some of the pages are shown as https in Google search results. For instance, if the search term "Example Press Kit" is entered the search result site link comes up as: https://example.com/presskit/ We don't have a site ssl certificate, so surfers are being bounced. I have tried everything. Most recently I created a new website in Google WebAdmin for the https version of our home page. Then, I added sitelinks that should have redirected site links intended for https://example.com/* to http://example.com/*. But it doesn't work! Google still shows a dead link to http://example.com/presskit. I didn't think dead links lasted very long on Google results, but there they are, two weeks later. Any ideas?

  On current Ubuntu (10.04) suspend-on-lid/Fn+F4 only works if some powermanagement-applet of KDE/gnome is running. But what about suspend-to-lid if you are working on the console or using a non-bloated window-manager? What is the current mechanism to configure suspend-on-lid system wide? What of hald/udev/acpid/foo-kit/random-thing is the right place to hook this feature in? What is the up-to-date command to suspend from the command line/script? echo -n mem > /sys/power/state pm-suspend pmi or something else? Btw, if it matters, I want to configure it on some Thinkpads.
