• Trac FastCGI + Python on dreamhost leaves zombie python running

  Hello there, Recently I installed trac in one of my dreamhost domains. I followed the instructions of http://trac.mlalonde.net/wiki/CreamyTrac and everything worked perfectly. At least i thought that was the case. After a few days, i started to notice that i was getting random 500 pages. I had started with 5 sleeping processes of python and after idle time i ended up with 6. I repeated this and found that it kept spawning more and more python2.4, this was indeed what was causing my 500s indirectly. Let me explain my findings. Am on a shared hosting so my processes get killed if they are way too many. So everytime i opened trac 2 new processes spawned and one remained, to the point that dreamhost was killing a random process when i reached my limit. Sometimes killing the python2.4 that actually was rendering the current page. Hence header premature ending, python is gone the .fcgi doesnt know what to do and throws an 500. I found a dirty solution to this. I changed my dispatch.fcgi to contain a line that killed any currently running python2.4 process and then spawn a new one. Since then i dont get any rogues what so ever. But i dont think this is the best solution, calling killall in every fcgi just seems wrong. Anyone has run into this issue and found a cleaner solution? Is there anything that i have overlooked?

  i would like to write a simple line of code, without resorting to if statements, that would evaluate whether a number is within a certain range. i can evaluate from 0 - Max by using the modulus. 30 % 90 = 30 //great however, if the test number is greater than the maximum, using modulus will simply start it at 0 for the remaining, where as i would like to limit it to the maximum if it's past the maximum 94 % 90 = 4 //i would like answer to be 90 it becomes even more complicated, to me anyway, if i introduce a minimum for the range. for example: minimum = 10 maximum = 90 therefore, any number i evaluate should be either within range, or the minimum value if it's below range and the maximum value if it's above range -76 should be 10 2 should be 10 30 should be 30 89 should be 89 98 should be 90 23553 should be 90 is it possible to evaluate this with one line of code without using if statements?

• Problem with routes and mod-rewrite (if not absolute i don't get CSS, JS or images)

  hi there! i updated the code from my website to a 'better' veersion i think, it works fine but when i try to implement the friendly URL and load it, works, but with no CSS, Javascript or images, but if i corret the routes for the css to http://website/css/style.css (instead of ./css/style.css) it i do see the CSS properly loaded, any idea why? Example: http://keepyourlinks.com/link1.php?id=25 VS http://keepyourlinks.com/keep/25/series-yonkis (i updated the route of the CSS, but the Javascript is missing an the images asweell) I really would like not to have to correct al routes :(

• Help using mod_jk to forward to backend app server

  I had mod-jk working a while ago but after switching servers and modifying some files, it no longer works. I am using mod_jk-1.2.28 with JBoss 4.2.3 as the backend. In the JBoss server.xml file I have the AJP 1.3 connector defined on port 8009 and I am binding jboss to the server's new IP address. The app I am trying to forward to is deployed as: [TomcatDeployer] deploy, ctxPath=/ManualAlerts, warUrl=.../tmp/deploy/tmp8097651929280250028ManualAlertsApp.ear-contents/ManualAlerts-exp.war/ On the web server, I have worker.properties with a worker set for the JBoss address and port 8009. The mod-jk.conf has JkMount /ManualAlerts/* worker1. Shouldn't this forward all requests to the web server with the URL http://address/ManualAlerts/ to the backend app named ManualAlerts?   Some questions about it: If I create a funny version of a copyrighted game and sell it (crediting the original developers) would it be considered a parody or would I need to pay royalties? If I create a game mod for my own personal use would it be legal? What if I gave it for free to a friend? Is there a general rule about it or it depends on the developer will? P.S.: I'm not talking about cloning games like this question. It's all about a game clearly based on another. Something like "GTA Gotham City" ;) EDIT: This picture that I found over the internet illustrate what I'm talking about: Just in case I was not clear: I never created a mod game. I was just wondering if it would be legally possible before trying to do it. I'm not apologizing piracy. I pay dearly for my games (you guys have no idea how expensive games are in Brazil due to taxes). Once more I say that the question is not about cloning. Cloning is copy something and try to make your version look like a brand new product. Mods are intended to make reference to one or more of its source. I'm not sure if it can be done legally (if I knew I wasn't asking) but I'm sure this question is not a duplicate. Even so, I trust in the moderators and if they close my question I will not be offended - at least I had an opportunity to explain myself and got 1 good answer (by the time I write this, maybe some more will be given later).

• Getting More Performance out of a MacBook Pro

  So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm thinking of swapping out the stock 5400rpm HD with a faster hybrid drive (has 4GB RAM and spins at 7200rpm) but was wondering if any of you had tried or knew of anything else I could change/upgrade/mod to squeeze more out of my laptop.   Can someone please help with trying to use mod rewrite so foo.domain.com is rewritten to domain.com/p.php?s=foo and foo.domain.com/bar to domain.com/p.php?s=foo&p=bar? I've tried changing the end of the condition to ?/(.*)$, but to no avail and my mod rewrite skills are certainly naff!

• Django URL resolving infrastructure stops working

  We recently launched a new Django-powered website, and we are experiencing the oddest bug: The site is running under Apache with mod_fastcgi. Everything works fine for a while, and then the URL tag and reverse() functionality stops working. Instead of returning the expected URL, they return "". We haven't noticed anything in Apache's log file; there are no errors being generated by Django. And (the kicker) the problem only occurs in production mode; we can't reproduce it when DEBUG=True. Any thoughts on where we should be looking for the problem?

• Configuring PHP in IIS with Tomcat

  I have my Java site running under IIS 7. I need to install wordpress blog in it. I've installed and configured PHP in IIS. I have tested the PHP handler by creating a separate site, everything works fine, phpinfo() gives the desired output. However, I'm having problem running the PHP files inside my Java web application. I've put my test PHP file inside a folder called blog. When I access this folder in the browser as /mysite/blog I get a 404 page from my Java application. When I try to invoke the php page directly, http://mysite/blog/index.php, I get an unprocessed php page. I'm using isapi_handler for the reidrects. How do I tell my isapi_handler to ignore /blog folder? In my IIS handler mapping, *.php is mapped with Fast CGI. I'm not sure how to approach this problem and any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Python fCGI + sqlAlchemy = malformed header from script. Bad header=FROM tags : index.py

  I'm writing an Fast-CGI application that makes use of sqlAlchemy & MySQL for persistent data storage. I have no problem connecting to the DB and setting up ORM (so that tables get mapped to classes); I can even add data to tables (in memory). But, as soon as I query the DB (and push any changes from memory to storage) I get a 500 Internal Server Error and my error.log records malformed header from script. Bad header=FROM tags : index.py, when tags is the table name. Any idea what could be causing this? Also, I don't think it matters, but its a Linux development server talking to an off-site (across the country) MySQL server.

  I am trying to install mod_wsgi on my VPS, but it won't work. This is what I am doing: wget http://modwsgi.googlecode.com/files/mod_wsgi-2.5.tar.gz tar xzvf mod_wsgi-2.5.tar.gz cd mod_wsgi-2.5 ./configure --with-python=/opt/python2.5/bin/python After I run the above command, I get this error: checking for apxs2... no checking for apxs... no checking Apache version... ./configure: line 1298: apxs: command not found ./configure: line 1298: apxs: command not found ./configure: line 1299: /: is a directory ./configure: line 1461: apxs: command not found configure: creating ./config.status config.status: creating Makefile config.status: error: cannot find input file: Makefile.in Through some research I've discovered that I need to modify my command: ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs \ --with-python=/usr/local/bin/python But, /usr/local/apache/ doesn't exist, or so that's what it is telling me. If it doesn't exist, how do I create it with all the files needed, or if apache is located elsewhere on my VPS where would it be located? I'd also like to mention that I ran a command to install apache before this entire deal: yum install httpd so I assumed that was all I needed but apparently not (I am very new at all this server administration stuff so please be gentle) EDIT: This is the tutorial that I have been using to get this all set up: http://binarysushi.com/blog/2009/aug/19/CentOS-5-3-python-2-5-virtualevn-mod-wsgi-and-mod-rpaf/ I got stuck at the heading "Installing mod_wsgi" Thanks for any help!

  I have a CentOS (5.7 Final) system on which I already have Apache (2.2.3) installed. I have installed mod_pagespeed by following the instructions on: http://code.google.com/speed/page-speed/download.html and got the following while installing: # rpm -U mod-pagespeed-*.rpm warning: mod-pagespeed-beta_current_x86_64.rpm: Header V4 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 7fac5991 [ OK ] atd: [ OK ] It does appear to be installed properly: # apachectl -t -D DUMP_MODULES Loaded Modules: ... pagespeed_module (shared) And I've made the following changes in /etc/httpd/conf.d/pagespeed.conf Added: ModPagespeedEnableFilters collapse_whitespace,elide_attributes ModPagespeedEnableFilters combine_css,rewrite_css,move_css_to_head,inline_css ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_javascript,inline_javascript ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_images,insert_img_dimensions ModPagespeedEnableFilters extend_cache ModPagespeedEnableFilters remove_quotes,remove_comments ModPagespeedEnableFilters add_instrumentation Commented out the following lines in mod_pagespeed_statistics <Location /mod_pagespeed_statistics> **# Order allow,deny** # You may insert other "Allow from" lines to add hosts you want to # allow to look at generated statistics. I'm averse to updating wget on my server, as I'm sure there's no need for it for the actual module to function correctly. ./system_test.sh www.domain.com You have the wrong version of wget. 1.12 is required.
