  For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure.  I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found!  I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops!  I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool.  I wish I had discovered this two years ago! • Are code screening services worthwhile?

  I've seen websites that screen programmers by their ability to write code. It's a service that you enter a programming question into and then send out a link. Job candidates program their solution to the question as they are timed and recorded. The person who posted the question can then playback a video of their candidate programming the script. This video allows them to see how quickly and neatly their job candidate can code. Are these types of services worth it? What caveats and hangups are there to using such things to screen potential hires?

• Ubuntu 13.10 gets stuck on boot

  I have updated (via the Software Updater) Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10. After it had finished the installation, the system required a reboot. When I reboot and load Ubuntu it will get stuck on the logo. I managed to boot into the recovery (both console and graphics mode) but I can't figure out how to repair it. I have tried a sudo update-grub, but nothing different happened. I have also tried sudo apt-get install gnome, but the same result... I am using a dual-boot Win7 + Ubuntu.

  Problem: Black screen after resume I found the below statement that I provided the link for but, no instructions with it for a person that's new to Ubuntu on what exactly to do to fix the problem. Can someone clarify this for me? Thank you. Ubunu 13.10 AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics × 4 64bit Toshiba L775 My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? Typical scenario is "use a laptop docked with lid closed, only the external screen is active, suspend, take the laptop, open it somewhere"... which leads to "no screen active". To debug this problem, check if gnome-settings-daemons is getting a signal that the display configuration has changed, by running xtrace against it, and look for a RRScreenChangeNotify event when resuming the machine. If that signal is being sent, then it indicates a possible bug in g-s-d. Otherwise, it suggests a bug in either X or (more likely) the kernel which is not causing the signal to be emitted to begin with.

• Is C++11 Uniform Initialization a replacement for the old style syntax?

  I understand that C++11's uniform initialization solves some syntactical ambiguity in the language, but in a lot of Bjarne Stroustrup's presentations (particularly those during the GoingNative 2012 talks), his examples primarily use this syntax now whenever he is constructing objects. Is it recommended now to use uniform initialization in all cases? What should the general approach be for this new feature as far as coding style goes and general usage? What are some reasons to not use it? Note that in my mind I'm thinking primarily of object construction as my use case, but if there are other scenarios to consider please let me know.

• Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Hit or miss Booting

  I just recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I also completely wiped the laptop. The Ubuntu OS will only boot part of the time but never on the first time. Always, the first start up will automatically go to a purple screen and stay there. At first I waited for 45 minutes and nothing changed. Once I held down the power button to turn it off, I turned it back on to see the Asus screen followed by the grub menu. I can select "Ubuntu" and then there is a white box blinking in the top left corner. Then, it will either keep blinking or transfer to the Ubuntu loading screen(everything works fine if it gets to the loading screen). This has never happened before with prior versions of Ubuntu. Any ideas are helpful. Thanks!

  If I'm writing a web application that uses the model 2 architecture, is it possible to use the Google Guice framework (or really any IoC container)? The reason I ask this question is because everything I've researched about DI, IoC, et cetera always uses Spring, Hibernate or some other framework/container in their examples. I'm just using Java classes, controllers, and JSP's to build this application and I can't find any good documentation about the subject.

• KeyTouch remaps the delete key

  I installed KeyTouch, but it decided that the delete key should be the KeyTouch hot key. So, when I pressed deleted, KeyTouch came up. Next I uninstalled KeyTouch and now the delete key doesn't do anything. Is there any way to remap the delete key to actually delete? Notes: I tried reinstalling KeyTouch, and the same thing happens. KeyTouch does not allow the user to map the delete key. EDIT xev shows keycode 119 when I press the delete key xmodmap shows keycode 119 mapped to Delete NoSymbol Delete running xmodmap -e "keycode 119 = Delete" from the command line does not resolve the issue

• Directory Synchronization

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here. • display driver problem

  I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop and am keeping windows 7 as a back up for when I get stuck like now..... After I installed Ubuntu I got on line and was reading about some of the things to do after Installing for the first time. One of them was looking for additional drivers witch I did and found two display drivers. Both drivers were from Ubuntu. However after install and a reboot I can't see any of my menu bars.....no app bar on the side.....no bar at the top of the display...nothing. I did have a file on the desktop that I was able to open. And I just learned that ctrl+alt+T gets me a form of command prompt. this worked but I don't know how to use it. How do I get my menu bars back?? is there a way to uninstall the drivers? I am really new to Ubuntu and like it so far but am having problems getting over the learning curve.

  My site's pages are in multiple languages whereby each language version shares its media (images) with the other language versions. I place all versions and the media in a single directory with the same name. E.g. pages mypage-en.html, mypage-fr.html etc. will sit in directory mypage. The directory path suffices to reference a page: h t t p : //....../mypage/ is good enough, there is no need for h t t p : //....../mypage/mypage-en/html A rewrite with RewriteRule ^(.*)/([a-zA-Z0-9]+)/?$ /$1/$2/$2-en.html lets me use the shorter form. But what if the name mypage contains spaces (which some do) ? I want h t t p : //....../my page/ to lead to h t t p : //....../my page/my page.html Using RewriteRule ^(.*)/([a-zA-Z0-9|\s]+)/?$ /$1/$2/$2-en.html did not work. Any hints welcome. (please do not ask me why I want to do this, nor tell me I should not use spaces in file names)

• Why can't I get 100% code coverage on a method that calls a constructor of a generic type?

  Today I came across a wierd issue in a Visual Studio 2008 Code Coverage Analysis. Consider the following method:  private IController GetController<T>(IContext context) where T : IController, new() {     IController controller = new T();     controller.ListeningContext = context;     controller.Plugin = this;     return controller; } This method is called in a unit test as follows (MenuController has an empty constructor): controller = plugin.GetController<MenuController>(null);  After calling this method from a Unit Test, the following code coverage report is generated: As you can see, Code Coverage is only 85%. Looking up the code results in the following: Apparently, the call to the constructor of the generic type is considered only partly covered. WHY? Google didn't help. And MSDN didn't help at all, of course. Anybody who does know?

• Optimizing multiple dispatch notification algorithm in C#?

  Sorry about the title, I couldn't think of a better way to describe the problem. Basically, I'm trying to implement a collision system in a game. I want to be able to register a "collision handler" that handles any collision of two objects (given in either order) that can be cast to particular types. So if Player : Ship : Entity and Laser : Particle : Entity, and handlers for (Ship, Particle) and (Laser, Entity) are registered than for a collision of (Laser, Player), both handlers should be notified, with the arguments in the correct order, and a collision of (Laser, Laser) should notify only the second handler. A code snippet says a thousand words, so here's what I'm doing right now (naieve method): public IObservable<Collision<T1, T2>> onCollisionsOf<T1, T2>() where T1 : Entity where T2 : Entity { Type t1 = typeof(T1); Type t2 = typeof(T2); Subject<Collision<T1, T2>> obs = new Subject<Collision<T1, T2>>(); _onCollisionInternal += delegate(Entity obj1, Entity obj2) { if (t1.IsAssignableFrom(obj1.GetType()) && t2.IsAssignableFrom(obj2.GetType())) obs.OnNext(new Collision<T1, T2>((T1) obj1, (T2) obj2)); else if (t1.IsAssignableFrom(obj2.GetType()) && t2.IsAssignableFrom(obj1.GetType())) obs.OnNext(new Collision<T1, T2>((T1) obj2, (T2) obj1)); }; return obs; } However, this method is quite slow (measurable; I lost ~2 FPS after implementing this), so I'm looking for a way to shave a couple cycles/allocation off this. I thought about (as in, spent an hour implementing then slammed my head against a wall for being such an idiot) a method that put the types in an order based on their hash code, then put them into a dictionary, with each entry being a linked list of handlers for pairs of that type with a boolean indication whether the handler wanted the order of arguments reversed. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for derived types, since if a derived type is passed in, it won't notify a subscriber for the base type. Can anyone think of a way better than checking every type pair (twice) to see if it matches? Thanks, Robert

  On ubuntu 12.04, whenever I try to install a package using apt-get I'm greeted by: The following packages have unmet dependencies: postgresql-9.1 : Depends: postgresql-client-9.1 but it is not going to be instal led E: Unmet dependencies. • IE9 RC fixed the “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” error when running an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio

  One of the obstacles ASP.NET developers faced in using the Internet Explorer 9 Beta was the dreaded “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” error when running an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio. In the bug information on Connect (issue 601047), Eric Lawrence said that the problem was due to “caused by failure to failover from IPv6 to IPv4 when the connection is local.” Robert MacLean gives some more information as what was going wrong: “The problem is Windows, especially since it assumes IPv6 is better than IPv4. Note […] that when you ping localhost you get an IPv6 address. • WebBrowser Control in ATL window. How to free up memory on window unload? I'm stuck.

  Hello there. I have a Win32 C++ Application. There is the _tWinMain(...) Method with GetMessage(...) in a while loop at the end. Before GetMessage(...) I create the main window with HWND m_MainHwnd = CreateWindowExW(WS_EX_TOOLWINDOW | WS_EX_LAYERED, CAxWindow::GetWndClassName(), _TEXT("http://www.-website-.com"), WS_POPUP, 0, 0, 1024, 768, NULL, NULL, m_Instance, NULL); ShowWindow(m_MainHwnd) If I do not create the main window, my application needs about 150K in memory. But with creating the main window with the WebBrowser Control inside, the memory usage increases to 8500K. But, I want to dynamically unload the main window. My _tWinMain(...) keeps running! Im unloading with DestroyWindow(m_MainHwnd) But the WebBrowser control won't unload and free up it's memory used! Application memory used is still 8500K! I can also get the WebBrowser Instance or with some additional code the WebBrowser HWND IWebBrowser2* m_pWebBrowser2; CAxWindow wnd = (CAxWindow)m_MainHwnd; HRESULT hRet = wnd.QueryControl(IID_IWebBrowser2, (void**)&m_pWebBrowser2); So I tried to free up the memory used by main window and WebBrowser control with (let's say it's experimental): if(m_pWebBrowser2) m_pWebBrowser2->Release(); DestroyWindow(m_hwndWebBrowser); //<-- just analogous OleUninitialize(); No success at all. I also created a wrapper class which creates the main window. I created a pointer and freed it up with delete: Wrapper* wrapper = new Wrapper(); //wrapper creates main window inside and shows it //...do some stuff delete(wrapper); No success. Still 8500K. So please, how can I get rid of the main window and it's WebBrowser control and free up the memory, returning to about 150K. Later I will recreate the window. • Is it possible to change HANDLE that has been opened for synchronous I/O to be opened for asynchrono

  Dear all, Most of my daily programming work in Windows is nowadays around I/O operations of all kind (pipes, consoles, files, sockets, ...). I am well aware of different methods of reading and writing from/to different kinds of handles (Synchronous, asynchronous waiting for completion on events, waiting on file HANDLEs, I/O completion ports, and alertable I/O). We use many of those. For some of our applications it would be very useful to have only one way to treat all handles. I mean, the program may not know, what kind of handle it has received and we would like to use, let's say, I/O completion ports for all. So first I would ask: Let's assume I have a handle: HANDLE h; which has been received by my process for I/O from somewhere. Is there any easy and reliable way to find out what flags it has been created with? The main flag in question is FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED. The only way known to me so far, is to try to register such handle into I/O completion port (using CreateIoCompletionPort()). If that succeeds the handle has been created with FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED. But then only I/O completion port must be used, as the handle can not be unregistered from it without closing the HANDLE h itself. Providing there is an easy a way to determine presence of FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, there would come my second question: Is there any way how to add such flag to already existing handle? That would make a handle that has been originally open for synchronous operations to be open for asynchronous. Would there be a way how to create opposite (remove the FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED to create synchronous handle from asynchronous)? I have not found any direct way after reading through MSDN and googling a lot. Would there be at least some trick that could do the same? Like re-creating the handle in same way using CreateFile() function or something similar? Something even partly documented or not documented at all? The main place where I would need this, is to determine the the way (or change the way) process should read/write from handles sent to it by third party applications. • How to integrate Purify into Hudson CI?

  Hello everybody! I have a Hudson CI system set up and for the moment it is used for building a project and running some unit tests. My next step is to integrate the memory leak detector Purify into the build cycle. Now I want to start the unit tests also inside purify and for this I have created a new batch task which runs following command: purify.exe /SaveTextData MyExecutable.exe --test TestLibrary.dll --output xml As I read in the Purify documentation the /SaveTextData option is used in order to run purify not in GUI mode. If I run this command on my local workstation in the command line it works perfectly. But in case it is started by Hudson, nothing happens. Unfortunetly there are no logs of purify... Has someone ever tried to start purify either by Hudson or any other CI system? Thanks in advance. On the master I have configured a task which should start the unit tests within purify on the slave. I am running the slave via JNLP. • Zend_Auth / Zend_Session error and storing objects in Auth Storage

  Hi All, I have been having a bit of a problem with Zend_Auth and keep getting an error within my Acl. Within my Login Controller I setup my Zend_Auth storage as follows $auth = Zend_Auth::getInstance(); $result = $auth->authenticate($adapter); if ($result->isValid()) { $userId = $adapter->getResultRowObject(array('user_id'), null)->user_id; $user = new User_Model_User; $users = new User_Model_UserMapper; $users->find($userId, $user); $auth->getStorage()->write( $user ); } This seems to work well and I am able to use the object stored in the Zend_Auth storage within View Helpers without any problems. The problem that I seem to be having is when I try to use this within my Acl, below is a snippet from my Acl, as soon as it gets to the if($auth->hasIdentity()) { line I get the exception detailed further down. The $user->getUserLevel() is a methord within the User Model that allows me to convert the user_level_id that is stored in the database to a meaning full name. I am assuming that the auto loader sees these kind of methords and tries to load all the classes that would be required. When looking at the exception it appears to be struggling to find the class as it is stored in a module, I have the Auto Loader Name Space setup in my application.ini. • Travelling MVP #4: DevReach 2012

  Our next stop after Varna was Sofia where DevReach happens. DevReach is one of my favorite conferences in Europe because of sensible prices and strong speakers line-up. Also they have VIP-party after conference and this is good event to meet people you don’t see every day, have some discussion with speakers and find new friends. Our trip from Varna to Sofia took about 6.5 hours on bus. As I was tired from last evening it wasn’t problem for me as I slept half the trip. After smoking pause in Velike Tarnovo I watched movies from bus TV. We had supper later in city center Happy’s – place with good meat dishes and nice service. And next day it begun…. :) DevReach 2012 DevReach is held usually in Arena Mladost. It’s near airport and Telerik office. The event is organized by local MVP Martin Kulov together with Telerik. Two days of sessions with strong speakers is good reason enough for me to go to visit some event. Some topics covered by sessions: Windows 8 development web development SharePoint Windows Azure Windows Phone architecture Visual Studio Practically everybody can find some interesting session in every time slot. As the Arena is not huge it is very easy to go from one sessions to another if selected session for time slot is not what you expected. On the second floor of Arena there are many places where you can eat. There are simple chunk-food places like Burger King and also some restaurants. If you are hungry you will find something for your taste for sure. Also you can buy beer if it is too hot outside :) Weather was very good for October – practically Estonian summer – 25C and over. Next year again! I will be there again next year and hopefully more guys from Estonia will join me. I think it’s good idea to take short vacation for DevReach time and do things like we did this time – Bucharest, Varna, Sofia. It’s only good idea to plan some more free time so we are not very much in hurry and also we have no work stuff to do on the trip. This far this trip has been one of best trips I have organized and I will go and meet all those guys in this region again! :)
