• What are options for 3rd Party Centralized Software Settings Management?

  I am an architect in an enterprise looking to build a SaaS solution. Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

• How to collaborate on features using github

  github encourages 1 fork per user, so that that user can work independently on a feature and then request that feature to be accepted into the main repository via pull request. However, what if 2 developers need to collaborate on that feature? What is the ideal workflow for this? I could see a number of options: Both developers fork the original repository. Each developer pulls/pushes changes between each other's repository. This seems like a lot of work (tiny micro operations) and also creates a delay between changes, so increases the window for conflicts. Developer 1 forks from the main repository, developer 2 forks from developer 1. Same as #1 mainly but hopefully simplifies Developer 2's life a little? Developer 1 gives Developer 2 permissions to his own fork, so they both work out of the same central repository. Not sure if this is ideal. I'm also curious where branches come into this. Obviously there would be a branch for the feature itself but that branch can't exist in a single place, it would have to exist on multiple forks and be synchronized. Basically just really confused about this workflow, would like an approach for how this can be best accomplished.

• install to USB without touching windows MBR

  I would like as full of an install as possible (most notably no casper, just straight on the drive) on a USB stick, but I'm not allowed to touch the current configuration of the computer I'll be running it on at all (except of course changing the boot options to boot from usb). Most guides I read are about getting a live install with persistence on USB, or (I think) still replace the MBR with GRUB. Is there any way to combine the two, and not touch the underlying system?

• Why I LOVE Dell

  We recently ordered a laptop for an employee.  It was delivered yesterday and we realized it had no web cam and wasn’t the 1080p resolution.  He wasn’t happy. So, this morning, I sent an e-mail to our rep and asked him what we could do.  Within an hour or two, he called me, arranged a replacement laptop with the corrected specs, set up a return and had everything arranged and charged us only for the difference.  No pain, no silly questions.  We won’t loose use of the laptop either.  The return and the new laptop will overlap so that we can just pack up the old laptop in the box of the new one, slap some labels on and away we go. This has been my experience with Dell over the past 10 years.  Their corporate service has always been fantastic, and it’s made me a huge fan.  Keep up the good work, Dell! Technorati Tags: Dell

• The Mac Tax

  One of our users was having difficulties with their mac and using some web software.  I decided to go peruse the landscape and see how much of a premium people were paying for their macs.  I priced out a Dell and a Mac from their websites.  I tried to get them as close to the same configuration, from a hardware standpoint, as I could.  I found the following: Apple Macbook Pro   Dell XPS 17 There are several important differences in the hardware: The mac doesn’t have a blueray player, but the dell does. The mac has a slightly slower processor. The mac claims to have a better battery, but doesn’t list the specifics, so there’s no way to tell. The mac doesn’t list the video card stats, so there’s no way to tell how comparable they are, but they’re probably close. The mac doesn’t come with any additional software.  No iWorks, iPhoto, etc.  They were left to their default of None, so arguably, the Dell is more functional out of the box. Other than changing the hardware specs to be close, all other configuration options were left at their default. So riddle me this, Batman:  Why do people buy Macs?  I have several dev buddies that own them, but I can’t justify the cost.  First, most of them load bootcamp and/or parallels at extra cost to run windows 7 and windows apps.  The hardware isn’t as good.  The price is almost twice as expensive.   hey i have tried to install ubuntu many times, but once it installs it boot-loops at the splash screen. it just loops through the boot sound and the screen not sure why. nothing has seemed to work. also its only alowing me to boot windows all other oporating systems crash and loop just like ubuntu (android x86, linux mint, red hat, ubuntustudio). compac amd 64 3400+ 1gig ram 2 hhd (200 gig/120 gig) 1 ssd (500gig) win7 x86 a video showing what happens

• How to integrate Pidgin and Evolution into the message indicator?

  I upgraded to 12.10, I was using Unity 2d, but as it no longer exists I moved to gnome classic, something in the upgrade seems to have change the message indicator in the "Indicator Applet Complete". How do I integrate Pidgin and Evolution into the message indicator, there is only a button to launch Pidgin, but a new message does not change the colour of the icon or show up in the dropdown part. Also when minimizing Pidgin it minimizes like a normal window instead of minimizing to the applet. There is nothing in the menu for Evolution at all.

• Git repo: Unravelling my mess into tidy branches

  I wanted to play with a project, so git cloned it and, following its instructions, created a local branch for my configuration (I guess so that users can merge updates back). At first I was just tweaking to suit my preferences, so I didn't bother with any further branching, but now I have some code that might be useful to someone else, but with my passwords, etc in the same branch. Effectively, I have one big branch from which I'd like to have: Postgres backend (default) but with some new code I've added MySQL backend (the biggest change I've made) with that same new code My settings: I can't git ignore the settings file because I occasionally have to add sections for new functionality, but I need to keep my personal settings out of the public branches! I guess this would work best as a local-only branch. Dev branches, which I would branch from the MySQL. Starting from scratch, I think I could figure out how to branch/merge the various updates, but is there an easy way to walk through the existing repo and choose which commits to apply to which branch? Or possibly create a branch from a point upstream then merge back, excluding certain commits?

  I have run the following command to remove old kernels: dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge and only the current kernel is now installed, which I have confirmed in synaptic and by checking my boot partition. • My home folder disappeared after using Chroot/debootstrap. Can it be recovered?

  I was following the instructions from http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit but stopped after cloning wine. Afterwards I closed the terminal and terminated the process when asked. Ubuntu threw up an error report and when I tried to cd to ~/Downloads it was gone, along with all the other directories. So I tried restarting Ubuntu, whereupon I was greeted with the default desktop and home directory. Can I recover my home folder or has it been deleted?

• What kind of hosting do I need?

  I migrated this question from serverfault. Hopefully this is the appropriate place. I have been trying to answer this question but I haven't found an specific answer to my situation. As I want to pay for what I need, I thought I could get a good answer here. I have a custom made forum (rather than a built-in forum like the ones you can find in plugins, e.g. WP-Forum or phpBB type of software) in Django. I don't want to use Apache and modwsgi because it's usually very memory-hungry and I can't afford a big server. I prefer a combination of nginx and gunicorn which I think is very efficient (maybe you can also tell me what you think about that). I'm expecting to receive 10,000 to 20,000 visits each month with 15,000 to 30,000 page impressions. I have reviewed some cloud services like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace and other more traditional services (Linodo). This site won't use videos or big images and I certainly don't need a huge amount of bandwidth (200GB would be definitely too much). I need shell access so shared hosting is out of the question. What do I need to run a website like that without problems? What about RAM? 256MB would be enough (that's the amount of RAM offered by small instances in Amazon and Rackspace)? Do you know of any alternative to those I mentioned? If you need more information to provide a useful answer, please don't hesitate to ask. By the way, I was told that Linodo is not all that different to Amazon EC2 but this website is supposed to work 24/7, so I can't take advantage of Linodo's flexibility regarding creating and deleting instances. • A lot of 408 errors in apache logs - how to prevent them?

  I see a lot of 408 errors in my apache2 logs. I increased RequestReadTimeout and KeepAliveTimout but errors are still there. The errors look like this: xx.xx.xx.xx - - [05/Dec/2012:19:33:56 +0100] "-" 408 4561 "-" "-" xx.xx.xx.xx - - [05/Dec/2012:19:33:56 +0100] "-" 408 4561 "-" "-" I heard that these errors are related to Chrome optimization and some users did reported our site returning 408 internal error. It is interesting that we get two 408 error from same IP in sequence then it that IP start working.

  I'm working on a Control Panel for SA-MP. Firstly I want to make a start and a close button. The start button is done, I'm having some problems with the close button. I will host multiple server on same server with different IP. My problem is , when I send a ssh command kill samp03srv kills all running apps. My question : Is there any way to kill an app using cd ? • Is there a way to change the root password while still logged in? I did something bad by accdient -_-

  So I was trying to add my printer, and I wasn't able to make any changes due to the fact that cups was not accepting my root password. I was Googling some changes and trying to fix the problem when one of the commands CHANGED MY SUDO PASSWORD! Can someone please tell me which one of these is the culprit? I was trying to these commands: cat /etc/group | grep root cat /etc/group | grep myUserName usermod -a -G lpadmin myUserName sudo usermod -a -G lpadmin myUserName sudo gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf lppasswd -a myUserName lppasswd -a root sudo lppasswd -a myUserName I think it was this one, but I know which passwords I put in! There was nothing which I typed in besides my strong password or my easy temporary password. Unless I made a typo... please no. restart cups sudo password root This is so not cool, I was just trying to add a printer :'( Please help my stupidity!

• Heightmap and Textures

  Im trying to find the "best way" to apply a texture to a heightmap with opengl 3.x. Its really hard to find something on google because tutorials are olds and they're all using different methods, im really lost and i dont know what to use at all. Here is my code that generates the heightmap (its basic) float[] vertexes = null; float[] textureCoords = null; for(int x = 0; x < this.m_size.width; x++) { for(int y = 0; y < this.m_size.height; y++) { vertexes ~= [x, 1.0f, y]; textureCoords ~= [cast(float)x / 50, cast(float)y / 50]; } } As you can see, i dont know how to apply the texture at all (i was using / 50 for my tests). • Hospital fined $1m for Patient Data Breach

• What is the program "Additional Drivers" (jockey-gtk) talking me about?

  The program says: "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" But it doesn't say if it is talking about graphical drivers only or what. Then, it lists two drivers: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 173). NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [recomended] Both have exactly the same description. What is the difference then? When I select the 1st one, it says: "This river is not activated",and there's a button to "activate" it. When I select the 2nd one, it says: "This river is activated but it is not currently in use", and the button is to "remove". So which one is in use? Why or what for should I have activated (enabled) and not in use? If it is in use it is activated? What is the difference between activate and remove? and what is the relationship between installed, activated, in use, enabled and removed, disabled, inactive and not-installed? Why can I activate the inactivated and remove (but not deactivate) the activated that is not in use? All this is very puzzling... What other drivers can I use for an Apple MacBook pro 3,1 and how? • How to optimize calls to multiple APIs at once and return as one set?

  I have a web app that searches across 2 APIs right now. I have my own Restful web service that I call, and it does all the work on the backend to asynchronously call the 2 APIs and concatenate them into one result set for my web app to use. I want to scale this out and add as many other APIs as I can (currently looking at about 10 more). But as I add APIs, the call to my service gets (potentially) slower and more complex. How do I handle one API not responding ... and other issues that arise? What would be the best way to approach this? Should I create a service call for each API, that way each one is independent and not coupled to all the other calls? Is there a way on the backend to handle the multiple API calls without all the extra complexity it adds? If I go the route of a service call per API, now my client code gets more complex (and I have a lot of clients)? And it's more work for the client, and since I have mobile apps, it will cost the client more data usage. If I go one service call, is there a way to set up some sort of connection so I can return data as I get it, in case one service call hangs?

• Hotel Reservation Request Booking Paypal PHP

  I'm making a website for a small hotel in php. The hotel owners want a reservation system that uses paypal. They want people to see a calendar and choose a date to make a reservation. If the day has vacancy, they want the user to request booking a room. This would then require the hotel owner to accept the purchase. I have not worked on a project that has this "request to purchase" method of buying with paypal. Is this possible? Does anyone know of an open php system that handles this? THANKS :)

• For a large website developed in PHP, is it necessary to have a framework?

  I am wondering if it is necessary to have a framework or if it is a must-have if I plan to make a large website. Large website could mean a lot of things: in other words, multiple dynamic web pages (40-50 dynamic pages, mysql content) and a lot of visitors (+- a million hits per month). The site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment. I know that it could simplify coding for a developer team, that it includes libraries and a lot of advantages. But I just feel that I don't need that. I think that learning how it works, managing it and installing it would take more time and I could use that time to code. I write PHP the simplest way I could (with performance in mind) and I try to reuse my code/functions/classes most of the time and I make sure that if another developer joins the team, that he won't be lost in the code. I am also planning to use MemCached or another Cache for PHP. As I said, the site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment but will be entirely managed by the hosting company. I am pretty sure the control panel for me to control the basic stuff will be Cpanel. For a developer like me that only knows PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS, MYSQL and really basic server management, I feel that it seems to complicated to have a framework. Am I wrong? Is it worth the time to learn all about it? Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.
