  The APress $10 deal of the day for today is "Applied WPF 4 in Context" (http://www.apress.com/9781430234708) starts with a simple introduction to WPF and then shows a complete WPF application from sketch to completed code. This APress web site states "This book can be used by a junior developer to learn WPF and understand how to architect a layered application, and it can also be used by a senior developer as a reference for developing scalable WPF applications. " - this summerises the book very effectively as it is indeed an excellent book both for learning WPF and as a reference for development. I recommend it to all Dot Net development teams.

• To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• Preparing For TechEd

  This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention.   I am writing a rogue-like 'zombie' management game. The game map will be similar to Prison Architect. A top-down 50 X 50 grid. I want to implemented a day night cycle and during the night I would like the player to be able to position lights. I would like to be able to lighten and dark to whole map to display the day and night cycle. Then lights would be a circle of light blocked by game entities such as walls, players, trees etc. How would I achieve and what is the standard way of achieving this?

I use 3d Max and Photoshop on a daily basis, and I was thinking about aiming for a career in videogames, starting as a level/environment designer. How should approach it? • Visual Studio UML Sequence Diagram

  I was wondering if there was a Sequence Diagram generator for C#? Im using Visual Studio 2008 Professional. If not is there a quick and simple software? Im finding Enterprise Architect and Visio a bit to cryptic for a beginner. I have found the Class Diagram feature on Visual Studio, which s very useful and am hoping for a equally useful simple program to generate Sequence Diagrams. Thanks.

• Is ASP.Net State Server an elegant solution?

  We have an ASP.Net MVC project that will start with a single web server but likely soon scale into a small web farm. As ASP.Net Authentication stores a UserID, and data caching may also be useful, we would likely need to make the jump to state server fairly soon. I'd like to hear from others how State Server has been to work with and how it scales from a performance perspective. Alternateively, we could architect it as completely stateless by not using data caching and tracking sessions with an encrypted cookie.

• C# Drag and Drop - e.Data.GetData using a base class

  C# Winforms 3.5 I have a list of user controls all derived from one base class. These controls can be added to various panels and I'm trying to implement the drag-drop functionality, the problem I'm running in to is on the DragDrop event. The DragEventArgs: e.Data.GetData(typeof(baseClass)) doesn't work. It wants: e.Data.GetData(typeof(derivedClass1)) e.Data.GetData(typeof(derivedClass2)) etc... Is there a way I can get around this, or a better way to architect it?

• Flash (ActionScript 3): how to build a remoting application

  Hi, I'm looking for examples (code) of applications that uses Flash (NOT Flex) and Remoting classes for ActionScript 3 (NetConnection).
