  Packaged with WebLogic 12c wls-maven-plugin let’s you install, start and stop servers, create domain, execute WLST scripts, compile and deploy applications. The plug-in works with Maven 2.x and 3.x. WebLogic 12c can be downloaded from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/index.html. • The Mac Tax

  One of our users was having difficulties with their mac and using some web software.  I decided to go peruse the landscape and see how much of a premium people were paying for their macs.  I priced out a Dell and a Mac from their websites.  I tried to get them as close to the same configuration, from a hardware standpoint, as I could.  I found the following: Apple Macbook Pro   Dell XPS 17 There are several important differences in the hardware: The mac doesn’t have a blueray player, but the dell does. The mac has a slightly slower processor. The mac claims to have a better battery, but doesn’t list the specifics, so there’s no way to tell. The mac doesn’t list the video card stats, so there’s no way to tell how comparable they are, but they’re probably close. The mac doesn’t come with any additional software.  No iWorks, iPhoto, etc.  They were left to their default of None, so arguably, the Dell is more functional out of the box. Other than changing the hardware specs to be close, all other configuration options were left at their default. So riddle me this, Batman:  Why do people buy Macs?  I have several dev buddies that own them, but I can’t justify the cost.  First, most of them load bootcamp and/or parallels at extra cost to run windows 7 and windows apps.  The hardware isn’t as good.  The price is almost twice as expensive.   Yesterday I talked about the Browsers we see being used by our readers driven off of our Google Analytics traffic and today I want to share with you the Screen Resolutions we see.  As a web developer most of my life, it is hard to decide how large you should build your application because typically you have a couple huge high resolution monitors on your desk, but you typical end user is thought to have 1024x768.  With HTML5/CSS3 out, it is a little better coming up with a design that will scale to all resolutions, but it is still nice to know the numbers when it comes to how much real estate do I have on my clients. If you look at these numbers for Geekswithblogs.net, we have a lot of high resolution monitors from users that visit the site.  After a little more investigation of the number you will notice we do not have as much height available as we do width.  If the primary goal of a site is to deliver as much data in the viewable area without scrolling, this becomes a challenge when most of our pages have long pieces of formatted data.  So our challenge is to build skins that use up more of the sides of the content toward the top on larger resolution browsers and then entice the reader to scroll to get the goodies embedded in the content of the posts.  Going to be an interesting battle for sure, but we really need more skin offerings on the site. • A Virtual Seat at the Architect&rsquo;s Table

  I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull. The three most recent programs were recorded during a virtual mini meet-up of architects back in February.  You’ll find more detail here, but in a nutshell, I invited several previous Arch2Arch panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever was on their minds.  The resulting conversation yielded the three latest programs.   Fault Handling It is one thing to architect, design, and code the “happy flow” of your automated business processes and services. It is another thing to deal with situations you do not want or expect to occur in your processes and services. This session dives into fault handling in Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g, based on an order-to-cash business process. Faults can be divided into business faults, technical faults, programming errors, and faulty user input. Each type of fault needs a different approach to prevent them from occurring or to deal with them. For example, apply User Experience (UX) techniques to improve the quality of your application so that faulty user input can be prevented as much as possible. This session shows and demos what patterns and techniques can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite to prevent and handle technical faults as well as business faults. Q&A This section lists answers to the questions that were raised during the preview event. Q: Where can retries be configured in Oracle Service Bus? The retry mechanism is used to prevent faults caused by temporary glitches such as short network interruptions. A faulted message is resend (retried) and might succeed this time since the glitch has passed. Retries are an out-of-the-box feature that can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite using the Fault Policy framework. By default, retries are disabled in Oracle Service Bus. • Do you have to recreate workspaces after upgrading a TFS 2008 server to TFS 2010?

  I am just reposting this thread from a MSDN forum since it seems to be unavailable. It was very useful when I was having trouble with my folder mappings after migrating to TFS 2010. Question: I opened VS2008 and connected it to the upgraded 2010 TFS server.  Upon clicking any of our Team Projects in source control explorer I get "Team Foundation Error - The workspace MYWORKSPACE;DOMAIN\MYUsername already exists on computer MYPCNAME." Answer: The same local paths on your machine are mapped to 2 different workspaces, one on the preupgrade server and one on the postupgrade server.  It's not safe to have multiple workspaces on different servers mapped to the same local paths b/c you could pend some changes while connected to one server, and the other server would have no idea what you did.  You should either delete your conflicting workspaces from one of the servers (if you don't need them on both), or test the new TFS instance from a new workspace (on different machine). If you want to test an existing production workspace on both servers, then yes, you will have to mess around with the workspace cache. You don’t have to delete the entire cache, you just need to run "tf workspaces /remove:* /server:<serverurl>" to clear the cached workspaces from a server (the command won't delete the workspaces), and possibly "tf workspaces /server:<server>" to refresh the workspace cache for a given server.  You will also have to do back up and restore the workspace before switching servers or your local files could be inconsistent.   There may be times when you need to expose just a small section of what is displayed in the Enterprise Manager console for SOA/BPM (EM console). A simple example can be where stakeholders on the systems integration or customer teams want to monitor a dashboard of statistics on how many instances of a composite have been created and how many have faulted.   I love Google Analytics!  It helps me so much during my day-to-day maintenance of Geekswithblogs.net and our other sites.  I can see so much data about our visitors and come up with new ways of delivering more content to our readers so they can really get the most out of our community.  Browsers and Browser Versions is a big indicator for me to help decide what we can support and what we need to be testing with.  The clear browsers of choice right now are Chrome, IE, and Firefox taking up 94.1%.  The next browser is Safari at 2.71%.  What this really brings to my attention besides I better test well with Chrome, Firefox, and IE is that we are definitely missing an opportunity with Mobile devices.  We really need to kick up the heat when it comes to a mobile presence with Geekswithblogs.net as a community and the blogs that are on this site.  We need easy discovery of new content and easy tracking of what I like.  I am definitely on mission to make this happen and it will be a phased approach, but I want to see these numbers changes since most of us have 2 or 3 mobile devices we use for Social activities, but tools are lacking for interacting with technical data besides RSS readers. • South Florida Code Camp and Other Events

  My grandmother wanted me to make her a video when she heard I got MVP in SharePoint Server of one of my sessions.  I decided I haven’t visited in two years, so maybe I can do an in person session.  I googled around and found South Florida Code Camp, which will be Saturday, February 12th.  I will be doing a session at 9:50 in the morning on Silverlight just for my grandmother and whoever shows up.  Here is the link for more information: http://www.fladotnet.com/codecamp/. In the upcoming months I plan to return to SharePoint Saturday speaking.  We are also organizing another New York event on Saturday, July 30th.  We will open up submissions for sponsors and speakers somewhere after Best Practices Conference in LaJolla.  I will be speaking at Best Practices LaJolla and the The Expert’s Conference in the upcoming months.  I am really sorry for the lack of updates it’s just been incredibly crazy going back and forth to DC and not having internet on weekdays or having the slowest internet in the world has just not helped.  I am also trying to attend Coders 4 Charity this year, so I can visit some people in St. Louis.  I’ve already got an incredibly crazy schedule going for the year.  I might be helping organize more events.  I’m going to volunteer at New York Code Camp too doing whatever they need this year.  Check back for more updates. • Changing the Default Install Location of an MSI

  A few months ago, I had to tweak an MSI installer.  It was installing into a specific directory (named the same as the application) underneath Program Files.  Since the location of Program Files can change from machine to machine, the MSI has a special token you can use for Program Files (as well as for the application name).  So the current value for “DefaultLocation” of the Application Folder was: [ProgramFilesFolder]\[ProductName] During installation, these tokens would be replaced by the actual location based on the current machine. I needed to change this to a specific folder underneath the users My Documents directory.  I poked around the help file and I could not find where these special tokens (like “[ProgramFilesFolder]”) were defined.  Obviously, there must be some specific set of values that are available and I’m sure My Documents is one of them. • MS Marketing Strategy

  I found this week’s Windows Phone 8 event interesting.  Not just because it looks like some fantastic new features in the new OS but because of the wait for release.  If I were a Nokia shareholder (which I am not) I’d be very unhappy with MS announcing that Windows Phone 8 will NOT work with current hardware.  So, there are some very nice Lumia devices that are now end-of-life that have arrived relatively recently at carriers and retailers. I understand that MS needs to demonstrate progress against iOS and Android and that there is some Windows 8 tie-in that they are trying to capitalize (and MS IS still all about Windows).  However, it’s a bit of a kick to partners that have invested in the platform with pretty decent devices (Samsung, HTC and of course Nokia). Personally, I’m still using a Samsung Foucs.  I was seriously considering upgrading to a Lumia 900 (we just got Lync mobile available) but will now wait it out until new devices arrive with Windows 8.  If MS had waited to announce, I would happily have upgraded to the Lumia and when I found out it couldn’t be upgraded then that would be a gamble I took and lost and I’d live with it.  Now, however, I can see the future and know that waiting is the better option for me so that is 1 sale Nokia will miss out on.  Based on some chats I’ve seen on mobile forums I’m certainly far from the only one. I’m sure glad I’m not in charge of marketing at MS.  There are tough decisions to be made there and I’m pretty sure you piss somebody off regardless. Technorati Tags: WP8,Lumia,Nokia,Samsung

• Quiz Master at Beyond Relational

  Last month a friend of mine invited me to join BeyondRelational.com and asked me to nominate myself as a .NET Quiz Master. In order to qualify I must submit an interesting question related to .NET and their .NET team will review the information and will select 31 quiz masters for the .NET quiz category. • Directory Synchronization

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here.
