• RHEL 5.5 Yum Update Fails Dependency Error

  I have 30 different RHEL 5.5 machines that will not update some 33 packages via Yum. Does anyone know why these packages will not install and how to correct this? Yum clean all does not fix the issue, however skip broken will allow other updates to install but I am really after a way to clear this up for good. They are stock boxes with RHEL subscription and not using any yum repositories other than Red Hat's own official repositories. • MacBook Pro shutting down instantly after attempt to update firmware

  I tried to apply a firmware update on a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz (2008), and after rebooting, the fans kicked up to maximum, the screen lit up, and then it immediately died. Now when I try to boot, it does the same thing: the fans crank to max, the screen lights up, and then it dies after about 2 seconds. Resetting the power manager does nothing. It doesn't stay up long enough to choose another boot drive or boot from CD. I have no idea what else to try. Help?

So, I've a script at /etc/init.d/myscript, I put a chmod 700, and create symlinks ('S20myscript') into /etc/rc2.d, rc3.d, rc4.d and rc5.d. But the script is NOT launched at all. When I put this script with update-rc.d (or insserv...), it works. I don't understand, am I forced to use this command? (and no, I don't want to use /erc/rc.local). Thanks!

• Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter not recognized

  The Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter will not be recognized by my netbook (Ubuntu 14.04, Asus X201E). As I understand it, the drivers should already be built in to this version of Linux, but I tried a make/make install of the latest Realtek drivers (as mentioned on How do I install drivers for the Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter?) and it didn't work. I then followed the advice of this thread (ALFA AWUS036NH driver) and did a make/make install of the most up-to-date backport of the drivers, but that didn't work. At this point I tried a series of commands from this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2187780) in an attempt to identify the problem, but at no point could I get the laptop to ever recognize the USB adapter. I have also troubleshot the USB cable itself, tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the laptop, have never received an error message regarding a need to update the firmware, and have seemingly successfully installed all manner of variation of Realtek drivers which were supposed to make the adapter work. (I also tried to delete/clean up after each install, in the hope I wasn't making things worse.) Not sure what I should do next. Please let me know if I need to post any more information. • System reverts to 87Hz refresh rate at every startup after I have installed nvidia drivers

  Every time the system starts the screen's refresh rate reverts to 87Hz which results in a pixelated and flickery screen which I have to manually correct every time by either selecting 60Hz as my refresh rate. I have tried "save to X configuration files" and even tried by making the changes as Root but to no avail as it again reverts to 87Hz on every system startup The Open Source Drivers are Okay for regular Unity but many games don't work on it hence I had to install the nvidia drivers. I have been facing this since the Beta Phase although this is on a fresh installation of 12.04 final release. I like Xubuntu.

  How can I tell which version and from which repository the Additional Drivers tool is trying to install the fglrx graphics driver? It says that I have a different version of the driver in use. I installed the driver from maverick/restricted and apt-cache tells me it's from a regular Ubuntu mirror. The installed version is the same as the candidate version. Can I get Additional Drivers to tell me what it would install if I activated the driver through it? Is it possible Additional Drivers just assumes it's a different version since it was installed by a different process?

  How does one configure the Radeon Open Source drivers? I have just installed Ubuntu 12.10 and want to try the Open Source drivers instead of the proprietary AMD binaries. After the installation, the driver seems to be installed, I have wobbly windows working (can't use a PC without wobbly windows!), and life is generally good. I have a problem when I connect a secondary monitor. Performance is killed (everything becomes laggy and jerky) and my laptop sits on the right-hand side of the monitor, not the left. • I cannot access Windows Update at all

  I have been unable to access the Windows update site for a couple of weeks now. I just get a message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and saying I have connection problems. Same thing is replicated with any other Microsoft site I try to access. The Automatic Updates also do not work. I can access every other wesbite I've surfed to. I've tried Googling the problem and based on what other site have suggested I have cleared my cache and temp files. I've scanning my hard drive with my antivirus in case I have a virus (nada). I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus (I run Zone Alarm). I've downloaded SpyBot and scanned my drive with that in case something was missed by Zone Alarm (again nada). Based on suggestions from the smart cookies on the Bad Science forum, I've used nslookup to check my translation isn't wonky (got all the info they said I should get). I've also tried navigating there directly using the IP address I was given (nope). I normally access the internet through a 3 mobile broadband connection, but have also tried connecting using a mate's wi-fi connection in case it was something on my mobile modem interferring. I run Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite as my anti-virus/ firewall. Any suggestions?

  As I discovered when asking this question, it appears that demond_nscan is trying to use a device without claiming it. And it does it.... hundreds of time per second apparently. This makes kern.log and syslog huge (100GB ). In this particular case the problem is directly a result of some Lexmark drivers that were installed (found at /usr/local/lexmark/unix_scan_drivers/bin/demond_nscan). Here are a few things I know: The drivers are for an all-in-one printer/scanner device. There was a previous lexmark printer-only that was installed with CUPS This driver was the one for CUPS systems, and I think that it automatically added it to the list of printers in CUPS. The issue started spamming kern/syslog only after these drivers were installed, using the lexmark installers While googling around I found this thread that's not completely related, but it does mention that it might be happening when two drivers try to control the same device at the same time. How can I resolve this issue so that either I only have one driver, or get the driver to claim the device before usage?

  I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop and am keeping windows 7 as a back up for when I get stuck like now..... After I installed Ubuntu I got on line and was reading about some of the things to do after Installing for the first time. One of them was looking for additional drivers witch I did and found two display drivers. Both drivers were from Ubuntu. However after install and a reboot I can't see any of my menu bars.....no app bar on the side.....no bar at the top of the display...nothing. I did have a file on the desktop that I was able to open. And I just learned that ctrl+alt+T gets me a form of command prompt. this worked but I don't know how to use it. How do I get my menu bars back?? is there a way to uninstall the drivers? I am really new to Ubuntu and like it so far but am having problems getting over the learning curve.

  UPDATE: As my patience started to end, the laptop started to display symptoms of other malfunctions, so I ended up returning it to Asus and actually had the price of the laptop back in store credit. I did not solve the problem per se, but as I don't have the notebook and the screen, the keyboard, the touchpad and other parts were malfunctioning, I can safely assume that it was put to rest. It worked great for the first weeks, but then I updated my Windows 7 Home Basic with the daily updates; After that my home network couldn't be reached no matter what I did. I have linux on dual boot on the same notebook and it can connect to my home wireless network flawlessly. I have a hunch that it's somehow related to the Network Profile settings. I have noticed my network was set as "Home network", but after the system updates I got changed to "Public". Now I can't connect to it to change the profile settings. My Atheros Network adapter is updated to the latest driver (march 2012), and I still can't connect. The funny thing is that the same thing happened to my mother's notebook, as it has the same Network Adapter, Atheros AR9285, as I recall it. I managed to fix it on my mother's computer by using an specific network LSP and profiling reset that was available through her notebook's antivirus program, avast! Internet Security. I can't get that to work on my notebook, but I suspect that some related tool might just make it work too. So the question is: how to modify a network's profile and settings that were stored in my notebook? I can't connect to the specific network on Windows, as stated before.

• Is there any multi-touch graphics tablet with Linux drivers?

  After watching the absolutely amazing 10/GUI video, I have been dying to try to implement something like this. I can do the software side quite easily, but I don't have the hardware. The Wacom Bamboo Fun would work, but the Linux drivers don't support the multi-touch features. Microsoft's "UnMouse Pad" looks like the perfect solution, but it is not commercially available yet. Are there any similar devices that would work? Alternatively, is there a way to build a DIY version? (It is fairly easy to build a multi-touch display with a webcam and IR LEDs, but it would not be pressure sensitive. Does anyone have any info on how the UnMouse Pad works and if it is possible to build one?) EDIT: I should clarify that I don't want a multi-touch display. I want the sensor to be separate from the display. If that sounds crazy, watch the 10/GUI video.

  Before today, I had perfectly good drivers from nvidia for my linux mint (15) box. I decided to update it because my performance in TF2 is less than stellar, and then things went south. I used synaptic to install nvidia-331 and then rebooted, but when I selected Mint in GRUB I waited...and waited...and waited. Nothing happened, but the display stayed on (a completely black video was being output). So I went into recovery mode from GRUB, went to root access, and apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'d my way out of that mess, and installed nvidia-common. Now my performance in graphic intensive stuff (read: games, blender) sucks, so I've been through the same thing a few times trying to re-install nvidia-current. I just want to get it back how it was.
