  Happy Friday, everyone! Our spotlight this week is on a really cool technical tip on the Oracle Technology Network from Yuli Vasiliev called "How to Launch Linux Utilities from Oracle Database". From Yuli's introduction: "By wrapping a Linux utility in a script and using an external database table's preprocessor directive, you can launch the utility from within Oracle Database and have the utility's output be inserted into the external table. • How to use Mercurial's LargeFiles extension? [migrated]

  I use Mercurial for game development, and I'm trying to use the LargeFiles extension included in Mercurial 2.0 to keep track of large binary assets. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of documentation on the extension, so I'm not sure how people are expected to use it. For example, is there any way to safely clean out the .hg/largefiles directory? If I'm on the tip revision, and expect to always have internet access, then I don't need the old versions of largefiles cluttering up the repository, since that's the whole point of using the LargeFiles extension. Also, how do I have more fine-grained control over where the largefile store is? I can only assume that it's created somewhere on the computer that ran hg init, but I have no idea about the details. • set left handed mouse, then wacom stylus buttons switch too

  I'm using Lubuntu 12.04. I can set my mouse (basic usb mouse) to left hand (i.e. switch the left and right mouse buttons which is all I need) by going into Preferences / Keyboard and Mouse. However, it changes my Wacom stylus, so that when the tip touches the tablet it acts like the right mouse button, making it impossible to draw. Is there a way to have both happen at once? The stylus buttons working in right handed configuration, while the mouse works in left handed configuration? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

  As many others, I have been reading Uncle Bob Martins books. More specifically, clean code and then "the clean coder". Now, over the last year he has been producing "code casts" that you can buy for ~20USD a piece. I bought the first episode sometime in mid 2011 and wasnt that impressed, as I really learned nothing new after reading his books. Last night I bought the first episode of test driven development with more or less the same result as last time. Now tonight I gave it one more go and bought TDD part 2 and this one was, IMO, really good. With this post I would like to tip others about his videos and would also like to know what others think. Should I add the following lines to crontab ? mysqldump -u root -pPASSWORD database_name | gzip > /home/backup/database_`date +\%m-\%d-\%Y`.sql.gz svn commit -m "Committing the working copy containing the database dump" 1) First of all, is this a good approach? 2) It is not clear how to specify the repository and the working copy with svn. 3) How can I run svn only when the mysqldump is done and not before ? • Choosing a crossplatform for mobile development

  I am creating a enterprise project and will develop the app for WP, Android and IPhone (Maybe also tablets) I have then done some research of what solutions are out there and have narrowed my choice down to 3 platforms (Due to my requirement to work with Bluetooth) The biggest requirement other than Bluetooth is the need to create good interfaces and module programming so its easy to maintain the whole solution, other than that I would like to use C# but its not a real requirement, but if the difference between 2 platforms is very small then it might tip the scale. Mono (MonoTouch, Mono for android) PhoneGap RhoMobile From my understanding then PhoneGap is not suited for business apps and I am not entirely sure why, but it seems like a platform made for speed rather than long term developement, not sure how true this is. RhoMobile is made for enterprice and might suit my needs, but not sure if its a good platform Anyone with insight that care to share their opinion Mono is C#, seems to be very mature and I found MvvmCross which should help organize the project

  Following my last posts on Change Data Capture and Change Tracking, here is another tip regarding tracking changes: table and colum checksums. The concept is: each time a column value changes, the checksum also changes. You can use this simple method to see if a table has changed very easily, however, beware, different column values may generate the same checksum. • Draggable & Resizable Editors

  Thanks to a cool tip from Steven Yi (here in the comments to a blog entry), I was able to make a totally pointless but fun set of draggable and resizable editors: What you see above are two JEditorPanes within JPanels. The JPanels are within ComponentWidgets provided by the NetBeans Visual Library, which is also where the special border comes from. The ComponentWidgets are within a Visual Library Scene, which is within a JScrollPane in a TopComponent. Each editor has this, which means the NetBeans Java Editor is bound to the JEditorPane: jEditorPane1.setContentType("text/x-java"); EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/x-java"); jEditorPane1.setEditorKit(kit); jEditorPane1.getDocument().putProperty("mimeType", "text/x-java"); A similar thing is done in the other JEditorPane, i.e., it is bound to the XML Editor. While the XML Editor also has code completion, in addition to syntax coloring, as can be seen above, this is not the case for the JEditorPane bound to the Java Editor, since the JEditorPane doesn't have a Java classpath, which is needed for Java code completion to work.

• CW/CCW Rotation of a Vector

  Considering that I have a vector A, and after an arbitrary rotation I get vector B. I want to use this rotation operation in others vectors as well, but I'm having problems in doing that. My idea do that is to calculate the perpendicular vector C of the plane AB (by calculating AxB). This vector C is the axis that I'll need to rotate. To discover the angle I used the dot product between A and B, the acos of the dot product will return the lowest angle between A and B, the angle ang. The rotation I need to do is then: -rotate *ang*º around the C axis. The problem is that I dont know if this rotation is a CW or CCW rotation, since the cos of the dot product does not give me information of the sign of the angle. There's a tip discover that in 2D ( A.x * B.y - A.y * B.x) that you can use to discover if the vector A is at left/right of vector B. But I dont know how to do this in 3D space. Can anyone help me?

  I had an e-commerce website hosted on http://mydomain.com/beta for more than a year, eventually I decided to move the website to root http://mydomain.com I had done quite a lot of link postings to forums etc, when my site used to be hosted in the sub-dir /beta . Is there any way to do a mod_rewrite by which all the old links that I have posted do not return as broken links since now longer the site is hosted in /beta and is now hosted on the site root. I did read that mod_rewrite can help resolve this issue, but also read about that this has to be done with care. Just a tip that this site is using Friendl URL.

• Ubuntu 12.04 update + VirtualBox VM 4.1.14 r77440 - No input

  I can only enter my password with the keyboard and this is what I see after I login If I try to switch to a terminal with CtrlAlt+F1 I get this I don't have a clue how to fix this, or if it's even possible to fix this without access to a terminal. The recovery console does not work either. It opens, but keyboard input doesn't seem to be working for it either. Anybody had this happened? Update (next day) Keyboard input lets me do Alt+F2 and invoke a terminal, but I can't change focus to the terminal window that opens. Any tip on how to switch focus (Alt+Tab wont work) to the terminal window. Maybe looking at this you might have a clue what's going on, maybe there's no window manager loading?

• 20 to 40 seconds pause during the boot on 12.04

  I've just installed new ASRock B75M-ITX Mainboard and fresh Ubuntu 12.04 on it. During the boot, there is a 20 to 40 seconds pause when goa-daemon is starting (/var/log/syslog): Jul 7 11:13:28 sirius goa[1933]: goa-daemon version 3.4.0 starting [main.c:112, main()] Jul 7 11:13:51 sirius kernel: [ 102.771893] ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen Any ideas what is wrong and how should I proceed trouble-shooting this? EDIT: Thank you for the tip regarding ATA. I've found following in the logs: Jul 8 10:54:20 sirius kernel: [ 6.007532] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Jul 8 10:54:20 sirius kernel: [ 10.648618] ata1: COMRESET failed (errno=-16) The problem vanished when I've reconnected the Intel G1 SSD from SATA3 to SATA2 connector.

• Max Brightness in ubuntu lower when compared to windows

  I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my (new) ThinkPad Edge330. Everything worked quite well so far. I've noticed that the screen wasn't that bright and was a bit disappointed of the ThinkPad, but then I realized that the brightness was much better on a parallel windows 7 installation I did later on. I already used this tip: Max brightness on NetBook I did increase the brightness to an acceptable level (could be the actual max. brightness, or is there a way to increase it even further?) But now unfortunately I cannot change the screen brightness at all anymore. Not by using the FN keys or in the system settings.

It could be a new feature, a fix, a behavior change, a tip, etc. #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1 JSR 356 (Java API for WebSocket) has recently passed the Maintenance Release ballot, this Maintenance Release fixes an important issue when Java SE 8 Lambdas are used (see here). GlassFish 4.1 will include an updated version of Tyrus (JSR 356 Reference Implementation) to bring the WebSocket API level to the latest version of the specification, i.e. WebSocket API for Java 1.1. It should be mentioned that the Tyrus version included in GlassFish 4.1 also brings additional features.   My Oracle Support 6.3 was released over the weekend (13-Oct-2012), and with that we released 30+ enhancements and 60+ bug fixes. Most important changes Search Suggestions are auto-correcting spelling errors, more suggestions for 'how to' type questions, enhanced usability to see the suggested additional terms. Improved Knowledge Base region on the My Oracle Support dashboard: recent searches from this region now retain the search attributions (e.g. pre-selected products or release). Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching.
