• Why do some software not get load balanced even when there are multiple cores?

  While VTune Analyzer was running on a blade server with 8 cores, I observed the cpu useage percentage using mpstat -P ALL 1. mpstat showed me that VTune was taking up 100% of a single core, while all other cores were idle. Why does that happen? Shouldn't the OS (RHEL Server 5.2) automatically distribute load across cores? The same happened when I tried running MATLAB (even after enabling multithreading support in the MATLAB settings). p.s: I'm a developer. Not a sys admin. So felt it better to ask here rather than at serverfault.

• Check if current Command Prompt was launched as the Administrator

  I am looking to write a script that takes user input, then makes system wide changes. I need this to be very generic, but simply put, at the top, I need it to check to see if it's being run 'As an Administrator'. If it's not, then I want to display a message to tell them that; if it is, I want it to continue on. Is there a constant way to verify this? I am not looking to start a new session as the Administrator, I just want to detect if it's currently run as admin

• Problem accessing MICROSOFT##SSEE database (Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.)

  After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

• Cannot get admob working: configChanges error

  I know there are some topics about it, but the reason I start this one is I appear not to be able to solve it with solutions given. I want to add admob to my project. I downloaded GoogleAdMobAdsSdk-6.2.1 and added it to my project. When I startup it says You must have AdActivity declared in AndroidManifest with configChanges. So solution found, set it to: android:configChanges="keyboard|keyboardHidden|orientation|screenLayout|uiMode|screenSize|smallestScreenSize" and <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3" android:targetSdkVersion="15" /> Clean it, try again. But now I get an error saying following although my targetSdkVersion is set to be min 12, I really don't know why I am still getting this error: String types not allowed (at 'configChanges' with value 'keyboard|keyboardHidden|orientation| screenLayout|uiMode|screenSize|smallestScreenSize') Any ideas on this? There might be another setting wrong which I looked over?

• Block a machine from accessing the internet

  After some confirmation that I have thinking right in this scenario. We have a number of wired and wireless machines which presently have direct internet access. I also have a Linux (Ubuntu) server which is used as a file server for the network. Essentially I would like to be able to turn internet access on and off for machines. My plan is to block these machines by MAC address at the router. I would then set up a proxy server on the Linux box (ie Squid) so that the machines I wish to restrict can access the internet via the proxy. As I can adjust access via ACLs in squid, I would be able to switch on or off a machines access to the internet without having to further adjust the router's MAC rules. And of course I could go further and create a few scripts to assist with this admin task. Does this seem sound and have I over looked anything? Any help greatly appreciated. Simon.

• Multiple users writing to one Samba mount point in OSX

  I have an OSX box containing a script which writes a unique file to a Samba share. The first part of the script mounts the share. On the machine are 2 users- UserA and UserB. Each requires to run this script at any given time however only the user who mounted the share is able to write to it. I really need both users to have rwx access. Here is what I have tried: Mounting then chmod'ing the mountpoint (no effect- overruled by Samba server?) chmod'ing the mountpoint then mounting (same as above) sudo mount_smbfs Both users have admin privileges. Ideally a solution would be executable by one of the users (contained in the script) and not rely on mounting at machine boot time. Any ideas appreciated, thanks!

• Deny directory browsing in a Proftpd / Ubuntu Installation

  I used this guide to set up a Proftpd installation an Ubuntu 8.04 server... Works well, but the generic user ( userftp ) can run ls and is able to change to any Directory and browse freely on the server ..from the root / and upwards.. I added this line to etc/shells /bin/false in hopes that that would prevent this ... I really only want the userftp account to be able to upload to the generic /home/FTP-Shared directory, and be able to do nothing else on the server. How is this accomplished ... This is a headless Ubuntu box..and I am using CLI only .. no GUI admin tools

• How do I use the Microsoft IIS Diagnostics Toolkit to troubleshoot my problems?

  I have downloaded the [IIS Diagnostics Toolkit (x86)][1] [1]: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=9bfa49bc-376b-4a54-95aa-73c9156706e7&displaylang=en and I was wondering how to use it. I'm not a system admin just a developer trying to work my way around a strange problem. I have an iis server running php(not my choice) and every once in a while the application will not allow anyone to log in and then a little while later it just starts working again. I look in the event viewer and don't see anything and the iis logs are no help either. I read somewhere about someone using the the toolkit to diagnose there problem. I just need a little guidance on how to use this tool. Thanks.

• After recovery to restore point, Windows 7 missing pinned items and favorites

  I believe a recent windows update was interrupted. The next day, I could not logon and was presented with the error "User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded". I followed some advice from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-security/help-user-profile-service-service-failed-the-logon/4ed66b21-c23e-42f1-98b2-706dcf931fae and logged in with a different admin account and used system restore to restore to a recent restore point. Most everything is working fine, but I have noticed two odd things: Any items that were pinned to my start menu or task bar were not accessible. I had to un-pin and re-pin the items. In Windows Explorer, my favorites are gone and I can't seem to add any favorites. If I browse to a folder and right click on the Favorites Icon and select "add current location to favorites" nothing is saved. I'd appreciate any explanation to understand why these things did not get recovered properly and any help fixing the favorite functionality.

• rsync remote to local automatic backup

  Because all my work is stored on a remote server I would like to auto backup my server monthly and weekly. My server is running Centos 5.5 and while searching the web I'm found a tool named rsync. I got my first update manually by using this command in terminal: sudo rsync -chavzP --stats USERNAME@IPADDRES: PATH_TO_BACKUP LOCAL_PATH_TO_BACKUP I then prompt my password for that user and bob's my uncle. This backups the necessary files from my remote server to my local device but does somebody know how I can automate this? Like automatic running this script every sunday? EDIT I forgot to mention that I let direct admin backup the files I need and then copy those files from the remote server to a local server.

• Transferring DHCP using Windows Server Migration Tool - Why is Powershell is crashing on the import of the .mig file?

  I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

• IPV6 causing issue with DNS

  I have set up an 'internal' DNS at my work, basically we have ourdomain.com that is for internet, email etc and I have created on one of our linux network servers (debian) a DNS using bind9 with the domain ourdomain.inc. So based on my files below and the symptoms I'm describing; what effect could IPV6 be having on my setup? What can I do to fix this? I assume it is not actually the IPV6 causing the issue, but rather something in my setup. More the most part this seems to work, I can ping svn.ourdomain.inc and it resolves to the correct IP, I can also ping google.com and it also resolves no problem. So all seem good. However, periodically (couple of times a day at least), I loose the ability to ping the svn.domain.inc (and all others defined under the internal DNS). What seem to fix the issue temporarily is to disable IPV6 on the network adapter of the client machine and then re-enable it. Then it works for a bit but will always fail again. • Configuring sendmail to use one outbound MTA exclusively

  I have a sendmail problem, and I'm anything but a sendmail guru -- I could use some help. My problem is that I have a system intended to be more or less an "appliance" -- it's not intended to have an admin. Because of this, it needs to be able to "call home" by sending email. As we have configured it, this works fine -- using sendmail, it finds the appropriate relay by looking up an MX record and everything works fine. Now, however, because of security concerns, we want to limit it to using exactly one relay, so for example relay.corp.example.com. Should the user configure it to use, say, fubar.example.com, the mail sending should fail or be deferred. I thought that by configuring sendmail with a /etc/mail/server.switch file containing hosts files without dns, I'd get that effect. This doesn't work -- instead, if it gets mail addressed to [email protected], it tries to talk directly to example.com, and ignores the configured server. Any ideas?

• Is it possible to use Linux to route between my office (which uses IPSec) and home network?

  First of all, apologies if this seems vague - I'm not an admin of anything more than a home network. I have a Ubuntu box sitting on my network which does various odd tasks for me - svn serving, some file serving, Apache/MySQL/PHP which is all raring to go. I've started a new job and at the moment I'm using ShrewSoft VPN software to establish a VPN link to the office as I need it. I'd prefer to have something always running on my home network just for convenience. My home modem/router doesn't support holding a VPN connection open. What I would like to do is set up my Linux box to hold open a VPN connection to my office and keep it open permanently, and then all applicable traffic for the office be routed through this box. I'm not sure if this is possible, or how to configure the routing on the desktop PCs (Windows 7). Would appreciate any guides, etc that could help me out.

• Very slow loading pages with router

  I bought new router - this one: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-WR841ND and the problem is, that the loading pages is so slow, even sometimes the pages aren't loaded at all. Is the same, when I have on the Mac OS or Windows. Below are the informations from the router-admin section: LAN IP Address: 192.168.2.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 WAN IP Address: 192.168.1.100 Dynamic IP Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254 DNS Server: 89.203.178.2 , 10.14.2.1 How can I fix this problem? So basically, if I have these lines: This is not a test This is a test Maybe a test Definitely not a test And I run the script with 'not', I need to entirely delete lines 1 and 4. I've been trying with: PS C:\Users\Admin> (Get-Content "D:\Logs\co2.txt") | Foreach-Object {$_ -replace "3*Program*", ""} | Set-Content "D:\Logs\co2.txt" but it only replaces the 'Program' and not the entire line.

• Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive. • ssh into my mac from my ipod

  Ok so this is what I got, but it don't look right... The set up is as follows: My Mac is on a wireless network, presumably behind a firewall over which I have no admin privileges. Further, said wireless network changes my internal IP randomly at random times, so I do not know what my ip is. Note that localhost is a variable ip I forward some port or the other to my dns: ssh -R 19999:localhost:22 sourceuser@remotehost connect to my remotehost from my machine: ssh sourceuser@remotehost and then connect to the port I forwarded: ssh localhost -p 19999 [solved] Second question, there are a bunch of ssh clients for the iphone. Which one should I use? EDIT: Since jailbreak is not illegal, simply frowned upon by the Corporation, I've decided to go with that. I have a nice shell with openssh and the works. Best of all, it's free and it does exactly what you expect.

• Best practice to create an ftp administrator account on vsftpd

  Background: My manager would like me to create an administration account for out FTP server. When logged in via ftp, it should instantly display all of the home directories of the users, and be able to modify any directory or file in any way possible. What would be the best way to go about this? I planned on chrooting this ftp admin to /home, but I don't know how to properly go about the permissions. Maybe make a group called ftp_admins, and chgrp the /home folder? But then wouldn't it affect the users accessing their folders? any help is appreciated.

• I bought a domain name at GoDaddy and hosting at Dreamhost but the first doesn't work!

  I added the Dreamhost's nameservers like 12 hours ago to: I entered to the following panel: Nameservers -> Set Nameservers (I have specific nameservers for my domains) and added Dreamhost's nameservers liek this: Nameserver 1: NS1.DREAMHOST.COM Nameserver 2: NS2.DREAMHOST.COM Nameserver 3: NS3.DREAMHOST.COM So now in the admin panel I see this: Nameservers Nameservers: (Last Update 2/10/2011) NS1.DREAMHOST.COM NS2.DREAMHOST.COM NS3.DREAMHOST.COM But I get this when I run the analysis tools: Attention Required! There are critical issues Accessing Your Web Site Accessing Your Web Site Properly configuring your domain name and hosting account ensures that visitors can access your site. Did I do something wrong or I have to wait 24 to 48 hours? (Dreamhost does display my page because I can access the other domain name I bought together with the hosting) (By the way, if everyone uses the same nameserver, how will go GoDaddy know which is the hosting space that I purchased among all others)? • What to beware of reading old Numarray tutorials and examples?

  Python currently uses Numpy for heavy duty math and image processing. The earlier Numeric and Numarray are obsolete, but still today there are many tutorials, notes, sample code and other documentation using them. Some of these cover special topics of interest, some are well written but haven't been updated or replaced, or are otherwise of use. Quite a bit is the same between Numeric, Numarray and Numpy, so I usually get good mileage out these older docs. Ocassionaly, though, I run into a line of code that results in error. Not often enough to remember how to get around it, but usually I figure it out at the cost of some time. What are the main things to watch out for when relying on such older documentation for current Numpy use? Is there a list of how to translate the differences that exist?
