• Android asking for unneeded permissions

  I have an Android widget that needs internet access, fine and coarse permissions only. However, when I install the apk file, it says it also needs access to read the phone state and identity, and access to storage. It doesn't need access to either, and the only permissions that are in the mainfest are: <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" /> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" /> Any ideas on why this is happening?   We need management 10,000 GPS devices, each GPS device upload a GPS data every 30 seconds, these data need to store in the database(MS SQL Server 2005). Each GPS device daily data quantity is: 24 * 60 * 2 = 2,880 10 000 10,000 GPS devices daily data quantity is: 10000 * 2880 = 28,800,000 Each GPS data approximately 160Byte, the amount of data per day is: 28,800,000 * 160 = 4.29GB We need hold at least 3 months of GPS data in the database, My question is: 1, whether SQL Server 2005 can support such a large amount of data store? 2, How to plan data table? (all GPS data storage in one table? Daily table? Each GPS device with a GPS data table?)   In answering this question the question arose as to whether the traditional C meaning of the keyword auto (automatic storage) is still valid in C++0x now that it means type deduction. I remember that the old meaning of auto should remain where relevant but others disagreed. auto char c = 42; // either compilation error or c = '*' Looking at compilers I see the current division. • Design best practice - best way to handle user selection

  I'm an experienced developer (WPF) moving over to Android development. My question: an app I am developing allows the user to browse their local storage (such as SDCARD) and select a file. Now, should I simply create a new Activity (after the user has made a selection) to handle what I want to have the app do with that chosen file, -or- is the better approach to pass the path/name of the selected file back to the main Activity and let IT launch the next Activity? In other words, is the better practice to have the main Activity launch other (support) activities, or is it perfectly ok and normal to have one activity chain to another and on and on? Thanks!

• In Rails, what could cause a user to have another user's session?

  I have a Rails application using with an authentication system using Restful Authentication without any modification. Users have reported finding themselves logged in as the wrong user. In at least one case it was on their very first page view, never having logged in before. Is it possible their session ids are getting mixed up? Would switching to CookieStore make it impossible for this to happen since no session data is stored on the server this way? I suspect the problem is related to Passenger but I don't know where to start debugging this. Its only happened about 4 times in several months of being live so its virtually impossible to reproduce. Environment: ActiveRecord session storage Rails 2.2.2 Passenger 2.0.1 Apache 2 Ruby 1.8.6 Many thanks

• IIS 6 Private Key certificate access

  Hi, We have a Web asp.net application running in the framework 2.0 and hosted in an IIS 6 server, and the OS is windows server 2003. The web application is suing a client certificate to be authenticated by a web service. We have impersonalized the application pool with de user “Network Service”. The problem is when we have to access to the private key of the certificate that is stored in the machine key/my storage. The user Network Service cannot access the key. We have given privileges to the Network Service user using the winhttpcertcfg.exe tool, however the result is the same. When we impersonalize the application pool with the local administrator the result is successfully. Therefore we think that the problem is the privileges of the user. If someone could give us some information about, we would be gratefully. Thanks in advance

• [PHP] MySql Proccesslist filled with "Sleep" Entries leading to "To many Connections" ?

  Hi, i'd like to ask your help on a longstanding issue with php/mysql connections. Every time i execute a "SHOW PROCESSLIST" command it shows me about 400 idle (Status: Sleep) connections to the database Server emerging from our 5 Webservers. That never was much of a problem (and i didn't find a quick solution) until recently traffic numbers increased and since then MySql reports the "to many connections" Problems repeatedly, even so 350+ of those connections are in "sleep" state. Also a server can't get a mysql connection even if there are sleeping connection to that same server. All those connections vanish when a apache server is restated. The PHP Code used to create the Database connections uses the normal "mysql" Module, the "mysqli" Module, PEAR::DB and Zend Framework Db Adapter. (Different projects). NONE of the projects uses persistent connections. Raising the connection-limit is possible but doesn't seem like a good solution since it's 450 now and there are only 20-100 "real" connections at a time anyways. My question: Why are there so many connections in sleep state and how can i prevent that. Thank you for your time, if theres anything unclear or missing please let me know

• Reason for .Net UI Element Thread-restriction

  We know that it is not possible to execute code that manipulates the properties of any UI element from any thread other than the thread the element was instantiated on... My question is why? I remember that when we used COM user interface elements, (in COM/VB6 days), that all UI elements were created using COM classes and co-classes that stored their resources using a memory model referred to as Thread-Local-Storage (TLS) , but as I recall, this was required because of something relaetd to the way COM components were constructed, and should not be relevant to .Net UI elements. Wha's the underlying reason why this restriction still exists? Is it because the underlying Operating System still uses COM-based Win32 API classes for all UI elements, even the ones manipulated in a managed .Net application ??

• Safe ASCII char to replace whitespace before storing

  My code passes a big bunch of text data to a legacy lib, which is responsible for storing it. However, it tends to remove trailing whitespace. This is a problem when I read the data back. Since I cannot change the legacy code, I thought about replacing the all spaces with some uncommon ASCII character. When I read back the text, I can replace them back. Is this a bad idea, considering that I cannot touch the legacy storage code? Which character can I use as a substitute? I was considering some char upwards of 180. There will only be spaces - no tabs or newlines - in the data. The data is alphanumeric, with special characters.

• Consolidating separate Loan, Purchase & Sales tables into one transaction table.

  INFORMIX-SE with ISQL 7.3: I have separate tables for Loan, Purchase & Sales transactions. Each tables rows are joined to their respective customer rows by: customer.id [serial] = loan.foreign_id [integer]; = purchase.foreign_id [integer]; = sale.foreign_id [integer]; I would like to consolidate the three tables into one table called "transaction", where a column "transaction.trx_type" [char(1)] {L=Loan, P=Purchase, S=Sale} identifies the transaction type. Is this a good idea or is it better to keep them in separate tables? Storage space is not a concern, I think it would be easier programming & user=wise to have all types of transactions under one table.

• Best way to run multiple queries per second on database, performance wise?

  I am currently using Java to insert and update data multiple times per second. Never having used databases with Java, I am not sure what is required, and how to get the best performance. I currently have a method for each type of query I need to do (for example, update a row in a database). I also have a method to create the database connection. • Core Data Errors vs Exceptions Part 3

  My question is similar to this one. Background I'm creating a large number of objects in a core data store using NSOperations to speed things up. I've followed all the Core Data multithreading rules - I've got a single persistent store coordinator and a managed object context per thread that on save is merging back to the main managed object context. The Problem When the number of threads running at once is more than 1, I get the exception logged on save of my core data store: NSExceptionHandler has recorded the following exception: NSInternalInconsistencyException -- optimistic locking failure What I've Tried My code that creates new entities is quite complex - it makes entities that have relationships with other entities that could be being created in a separate thread. If I replace my object creation routine with some very simple code just making non-related entries, everything works perfectly. Initially, as well as the exceptions, I was getting a save error saying core data couldn't save due to the merge failing. I read the docs and realised I needed a merge policy on the Managed Object Context I was saving to. I set this up and as this question states, the save error goes away, but the exception remains. My Question Do I need to worry about these exceptions? If I do need to get rid of the exceptions, any ideas on how I do it?

• Pickled my dictionary from ZODB but i got a less in size one?

  I use ZODB and i want to copy my 'database_1.fs' file to another 'database_2.fs', so I opened the root dictionary of that 'database_1.fs' and I (pickle.dump) it in a text file. Then I (pickle.load) it in a dictionary-variable, in the end I update the root dictionary of the other 'database_2.fs' with the dictionary-variable. It works, but I wonder why the size of the 'database_1.fs' not equal to the size of the other 'database_2.fs'.   I'm trying to port the unix utility ldd to windows, because dependency walker and cygcheck don't quite give me the usage I'm looking for. (also for the learning experience) Ive been looking all over MSDN, for a windows API that lists dll dependencies of an executable, or even the storage format in the complied exe (just to filter it out), but I've been unable to find anything. If anyone knows what API call windows uses for listing modules to load, or what patterns I can search for in an executable to find modules to load, please help me out :) thanks! -note: I'm not looking to profile for dynamic modules, just list the ones that are required at runtime

• What's the advantage of an Adobe AIR app over a traditional desktop app?

  I'm pretty familiar with using Adobe Flex & AS3, and compared with writing apps in JS/HTML I think it's very cool. However, since AIR is essentially a non-browser version of Flex with benefits like local storage, it seems to be competing as a cross-platform desktop application platform... and in that space it's much less mature than more established desktop technologies. So what's the advantage of creating a desktop application using AIR compared to something like Java (or C++ using a cross-platform GUI library like wxWidgets)? Java's equally capable of communicating with the server for instance, I'm not quite sure what AIR adds when competing head-to-head in the desktop development world?

  Hi, I live in the linux terminal all the time under my slackware GNU/linux system (an EeePC). By default, GNU Emacs won't start if It can't find several Xorg libraries. Assuming I will never use X software at all, would it make sense for me to drop all this Xorg stuff and compile emacs again ? Are you aware of anything that could get me into troubles or making GNU Emacs not working at all ? Are there any advantage for me to keep all these dependencies ? I am asking since as said, my main box is an eeepc with little storage and I am dangerously hitting the limits ;-) Regards

• Which DVCS would work best on Windows for my scenario?

  At work I use ClearCase and SourceSafe, but have found some time to do some time to code for myself enroute thanks to a disposable laptop. However, I wish I had a lightweight VCS on my system using which I would be able to make changes to my code during the commute and then push/grab them from my Linux systems. I use git on my home system, but I can't really get it working on Windows. I don't want all that cygwin hack. If it does not run natively on Windows, it just won't do. What have you guys tried on your Windows system? Something that YOU use. The big player at the moment seems to be Mercurial? What would be best for a one (or maybe two) man team? I just need to maintain : Versioned copies of source code. Checking in and out should be as less obtrusive as possible. I am looking forward to a multiple Undo kind of feature (like that in an EMacs buffer) but persistent. I really like the way git keeps track of lines moving between files in a source code set I should be able to move part(s)/sub tree(s) of the source tree (each sub tree implies a module/plugin to my the main software I am building) to an archival system either completly or partially and restore them back from the archive as and when required and the system should track any changes to this tree as well. I actually want to experiment with my code as much as possible without me manually keeping track of what I modified and what I need to undo once I try out some idea, so that I am back to where I want to continue from. • How to generate distinct random numbers per distinct threads in .NET?

  Dear ladies and sirs. I have to generate 19 bit random numbers. However, there is a constraint - two threads may not generate the same random number when running certain code. The simplest solution is lock the entire code. However, I would like to know if there is a non locking solution. I thought, I can incorporate ManagedThreadId within the produced random numbers, but the ManagedThreadId documentation on the Internet mentions that it may span the whole Int32 range. Unmanaged thread id seems to be limited to 11 bits, still this leaves me with just 8 truly random bits. Are there any other ways? Somehow to utilize the Thread Local Storage, may be? Thanks.

  Hi everybody, How do you handle replacing/adding/removing memcached nodes in your production applications? I will have a number of applications that are cloned and customized due to each customers need running on one and same webserver, so i'll guess that there will be a day when some of the nodes will be changed. Here's how memcached is populated by normal: $m = new Memcached(); $servers = array( array('mem1.domain.com', 11211, 33), array('mem2.domain.com', 11211, 67) ); $m->addServers($servers); My initial idea, is to make the $servers array to be populated from the database, also cached, but file-based, done once a day or something, with the option to force an update on next run of the function that holds the $addservers call. However, I am guessing that this might add some additional overhead since disks are quite slow storage... What do you think?

• Recommand a Perl module to persist a large object for re-use between runs?

  I've got a large XML file, which takes 40+ seconds to parse with XML::Simple. I'd like to be able to cache the resulting parsed object so that on the next run I can just retrieve the parsed object and not reparse the whole file. I've looked at using Data::Dumper but the documentation is a bit lacking on how to store and retrieve its output from disk files. Other classes I've looked at (e.g. Cache::Cache) appear designed for storage of many small objects, not a single large one. Can anyone recommend a module designed for this?

  Can we get a list of basic optimization techniques going (anything from modeling to querying, creating indexes, views to query optimization). It would be nice to have a list of these, one technique per answer. As a hobbyist I would find this to be very useful, thanks. And for the sake of not being too vague, let's say we are using a maintstream DB such as MySQL or Oracle, and that the DB will contain 500,000-1m or so records across ~10 tables, some with foreign key contraints, all using the most typical storage engines (eg: InnoDB for MySQL). And of course, the basics such as PKs are defined as well as FK contraints.

• Best way to have unique key over 500M varchar(255) records in mysql/innodb?

  I have url column with unique key over it - but its performance on updates is absolutely atrocious. I suspect that's because the index doesn't all fit in memory. So I was thinking, how about adding a column of md5(url) with 16 bytes of binary data and unique-keying that instead. What would be the best datatype for that? I'd love to be able to just see 32-character hex hash, while mysql would convert it to/from 16 binary bytes and index that, as programs using the database might have some troubles with arbitrary binary data that I'd rather avoid if possible (also I'm a bit afraid that mysql might get some strange ideas about character sets and for example overalocating storage for that by 3:1 because it thinks it might need utf8, how do I avoid that for cure?).

• JS: Storing dynamic variables across pages?

  I've been looking into local storage options and plugins like Persist.js, sessvars.js, and even sisyphus.js - but I am unsure if any are the best fit (though I'm fairly certain I need to use one). Page one is a form with input fields for data like names, phones, and email. I have a button that replicates a wrapper div (and it's inputs) as long as more inputs are needed. When the form is filled the user hits submit which takes them to a 'confirmation' type php page. I need to the give the user an 'edit' button on page 2 that takes them back to page 1 and leaves all the info alone. For the most part everything returns fine, but if the user had hit the 'replicate' button before submission, and then hits edit afterwards, all the inputs that were dynamically generated return empty and the div no longer exists. Someone suggested that my variables are not persistent (when the replicate button is hit, input with an id="name1" becomes "name2" and so on) so that's when I found out about the plugins mentioned before. Is there a way that I can implement one of those plugins (or any other method) so that when the user returns to page one the div and it's input values remain unchanged? And if I'm on the right track are there any examples?
