  • How are dll's loaded by the CLR?

    My assumption was always that the CLR loaded all of the dlls it needed on startup of the app domain. However, I've written an example that makes me question this assumption. I start up my application and check to see how many modules are loaded. Process[] ObjModulesList; ProcessModuleCollection ObjModulesOrig; //Get all modules inside the process ObjModulesList = Process.GetProcessesByName("MyProcessName"); // Populate the module collection. ObjModulesOrig = ObjModulesList[0].Modules; Console.WriteLine(ObjModulesOrig.Count.ToString()); I then repeate the exact same code and my count is different. The additional dll is C:\WINNT\system32\version.dll. I'm really confused as to why the counts would be different. Could someone please elaborate on what the clr is doing and how it's loading these thing, and by what logic it's doing so?

    Orchard has its own caching API that while built on top of ASP.NET's caching feature adds a couple of interesting twists. In addition to its usual work, the Orchard cache API must transparently separate the cache entries by tenant but beyond that, it does offer a more modern API. Seriously, how many times have you written code like this: var faviconUrl = (string)cache["Vandelay.Favicon.Url"]; if (faviconUrl == null) { faviconUrl = ...; cache.Add("Vandelay.Favicon.Url", faviconUrl, ...); } Orchard's cache API takes that control flow and internalizes it into the API so that you never have to write it again. Notice how even casting the object from the cache is no longer necessary as the type can be inferred from the return type of the Lambda. The Lambda itself is of course only hit when the cache entry is not found. In addition to fetching the object we're looking for, it also sets up the dependencies to monitor. You can monitor anything that implements IVolatileToken. Here, we are monitoring a specific signal ("Vandelay.Favicon.Changed") that can be triggered by other parts of the application like so: _signals.Trigger("Vandelay.Favicon.Changed"); In other words, you don't explicitly expire the cache entry. Instead, something happens that triggers the expiration. Other implementations of IVolatileToken include absolute expiration or monitoring of the files under a virtual path, but you can also come up with your own.

  • Java memory mapped files and swap

    I'm looking at some memory mapped files in Java. Let's say I have a heap size set to 2gb, and I memory map a file that is 50gb - far more than the physical memory on the machine. The OS will cache parts of that 50gb file in the os file cache, the java process will have 2gb of heap space. What I'm curious about is how does the OS decide how much of the 50gb file to cache? For instance, if I have another java process, also with a 2gb heap size, will that 2gb be swapped out to allow the os to cache parts of the memory mapped file? Will parts of the heap space of the first process be swapped out to allow the OS to cache? Is there any way to tell the OS not to swap heap space for OS caching? If the OS doesn't swap out main processes, how does it determine how big its file cache should be?

  • Intercept windows open file

    Hello, I'm trying to make a small program that could intercept the open process of a file. The purpose is when an user double-click on a file in a given folder, windows would inform to the software, then it process that petition and return windows the data of the file. Maybe there would be another solution like monitoring Open messages and force Windows to wait while the program prepare the contents of the file. One application of this concept, could be to manage desencryption of a file in a transparent way to the user. In this context, the encrypted file would be on the disk and when the user open it ( with double-click on it or with some application such as notepad ), the background process would intercept that open event, desencrypt the file and give the contents of that file to the asking application. It's a little bit strange concept, it could be like "Man In The Middle" network concept, but with files instead of network packets. Thanks for reading.

  • C# GridView dynamically built columns with textboxes ontextchanged

    My page is a bulk order form that has many products and various size options. I've got a gridview that has a 3 static columns with labels. There are then some dynamically built columns. Each of the dynamically built columns have a textbox in them. The textbox is for quantity. Trying to either update the server with the quantity entered each time a textbox is changed (possibly ontextchanged event) or loop though each of the rows column by column and gather all the items that have a quantity and process those items and their quantities all at once (via button onclick). If I put the process that builds the GridView behind a if(!Page.IsPostBack) then the when a textchanged event fires the gridview only gets the static fields and the dynamic ones are gone. If I remove the if(!Page.IsPostBack) the process to gather and build the page is too heavy on processing and takes too long to render the page again. Some advice would be appreciated. Thanks

    I'm developing a long-running multi-threaded Python application for Windows, and I want the process to know the CPU time that each of its threads has taken. I can get the overall times for the entire process with os.times() but I need to know the per-thread times. I know that there are external tools such as the Sysinternals Process Explorer, but my program itself needs to have this information. If I were on Linux, I look in the /proc filesystem, as described here. If I were writing C code, I'd use the GetThreadTimes call, as described here. So how can I accomplish this on Windows using Python?

  • c# multi threaded file processing

    There is a folder that contains 1000 of small text files. I aim to parse and process all of them while more files are being populated in to the folder. My intention is to multithread this operation as the single threaded prototype took 6 minutes to process 1000 files. I like to have reader and writer thread(s) as following : while the reader thread(s) are reading the files, I d like to have writer thread(s) to process them. Once the reader is started reading a file, I d like to mark it as being processed, such as by renaming it, once it s read, rename it to completed. How to approach such multithreaded application ? Is it better to use a distributed hash table or a queue? Which data structure to use that would avoid locks? Would you have a better approach to this scheme that you like to share?

  • Trying to right click on code in VS2008 causes lockup.

    Working on a Win32 DLL using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and, since yesterday, whenever I try to right click on code, to go to a variable definition for example, VS completely locks up and I have to manually kill the process. To make it even weirder, whenever this happens the devenv.exe process uses exactly 25% of the CPU. And I mean exactly, never 24%, never 26%, always 25% Also, I've run ProcMon to see if devenv is actually doing something, but it's doing absolutely nothing external of the process. No disk, network, registry access. Nothing. This is getting really aggravating because I have a large code base to deal with and the only other way of jumping to the definition is to first search for it. Has anyone run into a similar issue? And, better yet, know a fix?

    First, let’s mention what SOA is not: • SOA is not the same thing as web services. Web Services implies the use of standard such as Java/JAX-RPC, .NET or REST. Web Services also implies the use of a WSDL, SOAP, and/or J2EE Connector Architecture (J2EE CA) and HTTP. SOA architectures can be implemented using J2EE CA, XML file transfer or Remote Procedural Call (RPC) over File Transfer Protocol (FTP), TCP/IP, Remote Method Invocation (RMI) or other protocols. In other words, Web Services are a very specific set of technologies. SOA is a concept and can be implemented in many different ways. Some very rudimentary, such as transfering flat files between applications. • SOA will not solve all of your problems. It will make your business more agile, increase business visibility, reduce integration costs and provide better reuse. However, if you don’t need help in these area or expect SOA to cure all of your IT problems, you are looking in the wrong place. • The concepts behind SOA are not new, but SOA is also not mature. SOA as it stands today has really only been around for 5 years. The concepts of standards based protocol handlers, predefined communication schemas and remote method invocation have been around for decades. So, what is SOA? SOA is an architectural blueprint, a way of developing applications, and a set of best practices. SOA is not an ‘out of the box’ solution you buy, install and then have up and running in a matter of months. SOA is a journey to a better way of doing business and the technology architecture to support this better way of doing business. SOA is also a broader set of technologies including more then just web services. When i manually run application exe instnace multiple time & process my data it process successfully..(might because of each exe run with its application domain) Same thing i require to implement from C# code. for that i have created dll which can accessible by Type.GetTypeFromProgID()..but multiple dll instnace creating same problem. If yes, then isn't it a bad idea using linq to sql instead of normal SqlCommand ? Or is there any other way of doing it in linq to sql ? When I attach Console.Out, I see nothing(command prompt does not even open). But when I include following:- context.Log = new System.IO.StreamWriter("d:\\abcd.txt"); I get an error, that "The process can not access the file because it is being used by another process" and that process is "w3wp.exe". How can I see the sql commands being executed by DataContext then ?
